Giant Fan NJ
Do you think the NY Giants made a mistake of going through the draft for a receiver rather than trading for a veteran?
Matt Mosley (12:01 PM)
Greetings from a dreary Lake Highlands, Texas, today. You guys have shown up in full force and I really appreciate it. I'll try to get to a lot of the folks who showed up early. I don't think the Giants were in position to give Boldin the $9 or $10 million per year that he wants. We won't know if it's a mistake until December rolls around. I think the Giants will have to be a different offense this season. But at least you can prepare for it. Last year, the Plaxico thing was such a shock that it sort of jolted them. This year, Coughlin won't let that happen.
Chris Stafford Virginia
Did the 'skins lay down an elaborate smokescreen or did dumb luck allow them to get Orakpo and avoid a QB controversy?
Matt Mosley (12:03 PM)
I think the Redskins wanted to be in the Sanchez derby, but they were never extended an invitation. Eric Mangini wanted players -- and he was very familiar with those Jets players. That gave the Jets the inside track. The Redskins loved Sanchez, but they didn't have that second-round choice (because of the Taylor fiasco).
Colin Easton, PA
What on earth is dallas thinking? 12 rookies? since when do NFL teams organize their draft around special teams? Not one player in their armada of choices is going to make an impact. Why would you draft special teams guys, then get a kicker who is going to give you touchbacks every other kick anyway?? PLEASE tell me Jerry and Co. know something we dont.
Matt Mosley (12:05 PM)
They sort of drafted like a team that didn't have any holes to fill. And Jerry came out and said the team was doing some "cost-cutting." There's nothing that fires up a fan base that some solid cost-cutting moves. I'm beyond baffled. But some national draft experts think the Cowboys had a fantastic second day. I'm not so sure.
Has sinorice moss played his last game for the Giants?
Matt Mosley (12:06 PM)
Too early to tell, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he gets cut.
While I think Maclin can be a great WR in time, isn't he just too similar to DeSean? Wouldn't the Eagles have been better off taking an over-the-middle threat like Pettigrew?
Matt Mosley (12:08 PM)
Yatin: I've been on the Pettigrew bandwagon for months (perhaps years), but I don't have a big problem with the Maclin pick. They saw some unbelievable value at No. 19 so they moved up and took him. Maclin was only there because Al Davis is infatuated with speed, and that bumped Micahel Crabtree and Maclin down. Maclin's the second best receiver in this draft behind Crabtree. I don't care if he has the exact same dimensions as Jackson. If you have two excellent young speedsters, you can find a way to deploy them.
Did the Eagles bring in Hobbs for depth, just because they got him cheaply, or because they are really thinking about trading Sheldon? What could they get for him now?
Matt Mosley (12:10 PM)
Some team will have an injury at corner and get desperate during training camp. At that point, maybe the Eagles could get a third or fourth-round pick for Brown. But yes, they'll want to get Hobbs on the field. And I think they're very frustrated with Brown's comments. Getting Hobbs for a couple of fifth rounders seemed like a coup to me. But I'm partial to Hobbs because I used to cover his high school team -- years and years ago.
Bryce (Rogers, AR)
Matt, who's more likely to get some playing time? Brennan or Daniel?
Matt Mosley (12:12 PM)
I think Jim Zorn will let them battle each other. The club's not sold on Todd Collins as the backup. If Brennan's made a ton of progress by training camp next season, you could go with Campbell, Brennan and Daniel...But that looks pretty thin. Maybe you just stick Daniel on the practice squad. That's probably what happens.
the Eagles' pick of Ingram (TE, Florida) in the 5th seems to be a boom or bust pick because of his talent but injury plagued 08 season. Do you think he'll pan out or be a practice squad guy before fizzling out?
Matt Mosley (12:13 PM)
I don't think there's such thing as a boom or bust pick in the pick. If you hit on the pick, great. If you don't, who cares? It's a fifth rounder. At one point, the Eagles had six fifth rounders Sunday. That was before they traded for Hobbs.
Your telling me the Eagles can't get at least a Second for Sheldon Brown?
Matt Mosley (12:14 PM)
If people think Samuel and Hobbs are the starters, why are they going to give up a second for Brown? Nice player, but he's not an elite corner by any stretch of the imagination.
follow up to Yatins question: Now they have Maclin, DeSean Jackson, and Kevin Curtis as short little speedsters. those seem like their top 3 WRs right now. why not get Pettigrew and get a tall reciver like Burress who has burned us so many times in the past?
Matt Mosley (12:15 PM)
Maclin's a little taller than Jackson. And you have a pretty nice third-down receiver in Avant and a decent red zone target with Hank Baskett. I think the team has confidence in Celek. And the Ingram kid has a ton of upside.
How's Chris Wilson looking at the SAM position and # of sacks for the "RAK"?
Matt Mosley (12:16 PM)
I have no clue how Chris Wilson's looking at the SAM, but I'm happy to ask next time I talk to my people. Put Orakpo down for 10 sacks in his rookie year.
Raider Fan (Tucson, AZ)
After witnessing the debacle with the Raiders with weekend, I was ready to go postal on any Broncos fan I came across. Now, after hearing Ron Jaworski this morning, I am much more optimistic about the potential of D.H-Bay. Do you see him elevating the Raiders' tired offense this year?
Matt Mosley (12:17 PM)
I go on college production. He never had the breakout season at Maryland. Ron Jaworski's one of the most optimistic guys I've ever met.
Matt, thanks in advance for the answer in your opinion, who has the best WR corops in the NFC and the NFC east?
Matt Mosley (12:20 PM)
In the NFC East: 1. Eagles 2. Giants 3. Redskins 4. Cowboys best in the NFC: 1. Cardinals 2. Eagles 3. Panthers 4. Packers
Redskin Fan, DC
no redskin questions. how about year 2 in the zorn era? do they make the playoffs or is he just warming the seat for cowher/shanahan?
Matt Mosley (12:21 PM)
Way too early for a playoff prediction. In this brutal division, the Redskins could be vastly improved -- and still go 8-8. Right now, though, I see them at 9-7 and barely missing the playoffs.
Do you expect McCoy to see a lot of playing time this year in order to keep some of the wear and tear off Westbrook?
Matt Mosley (12:21 PM)
You're not taking guys in the second round to sit around and watch. I think McCoy needs to have about 10 touches per game via run or pass.
Matt- Why does the Sports Guy refer to you as Matt Dankley in his NFL picks columns?
Matt Mosley (12:22 PM)
No clue. Feel free to ask him.
Isn't calling it "cost-cutting" a bit misleading? Jerry said he wanted to "keep ahead of the hounds." Didn't he mean that he wanted to start replenishing the roster with talented young players with potential instead of littering the back end of the roster with career backups who demand exorbitant deals far exceeding their production? Sure, it lacked a certain "wow" factor but there was a definite strategy beyond a "smug" confidence that every hole was already filled. Shouldn't we give them the benefit of doubt on this until proven otherwise?
Matt Mosley (12:24 PM)
You're everywhere man! I was told he used the phrase "cost cutting." I was in New York for the draft so I didn't hear it in person. But why would I give Jerry Jones the "benefit of the doubt" when his team hasn't been to the playoffs since the Clinton Administration?
Sanjay (Da Iladel, PA)
Who is your favorite player chosen by a Beast team?
Matt Mosley (12:25 PM)
I like the Rhett Bomar pick by the Giants. I think the guy can play a little bit.
Mike O., Los Angeles
How is Robert Griffin going to fare in Waco without Jason Smith protecting him?
Matt Mosley (12:27 PM)
It's a valid question. Fortunately, Jason "Big Smooth" Smith has remained in Waco and tutored his probable replacement Danny Watkins. I think Watkins is about 6-7, so the only trouble might be throwing over him. But Robert doesn't need much time in the pocket. And by the way, it was great seeing Coach Briles in New York. Sort of looked like a crime-fighting Dennis Weaver in that outfit.
So who returns kicks/punts for the Birds? DeSean? Maclin? Hobbs? Mix and match?
Matt Mosley (12:28 PM)
Don't forget about Demps back there. I think Hobbs will definitely get his chance, too. I think the Eagles cringe when Jackson's back there on punts, but he is a HUGE threat. Maclin won't see much time back there.
More likely to be cut: Sinorice Moss or Tyree?
Matt Mosley (12:29 PM)
I think Tyree's time in NYC has run its course.
What Giant's receivers better than Redskin's receivers? Santana Moss is vastly better than anyone they have on their roster - just look at their numbers.
Matt Mosley (12:30 PM)
I love Santana Moss. But I'm looking at the entire group. Haven't seen anything out of Thomas and Kelly yet. And Randle El is more like a No. 3 at this point in his career. I like Steve Smith quite a bit and Hakeem Nicks is going to be excellent. I also think Domenik Hixon can be a big-play threat when put in the right situations. Manningham's apparently on the way. So no, I'm not changing my mind.
Rafael Septien (Las Cabos)
Huge fan Mark. This is the year Romo gets the monkey off his back. Without TO mucking up the waters, he can get the ball to the open man instead of forcing it to TO, only to see him quit on a route or not fight for a ball. Sure, there will be less production from WRs, but Witten already functions as a 2, and the combination of Roy, Stone Hands Crayton and Austin, plus the 3 headed monster at RB, will offset TO. Dallas to 13-3 and the Super Bowl!!
Matt Mosley (12:32 PM)
Rafael, it's been too long. The Cowboys are now drafting kickoff specialists in the fifth round. You would've loved this era. I think 13-3 seems a bit optimistic. 10-6 sounds better to me. Not ready to guarantee a playoff win yet.
bob...new jersey [via mobile]
da eagles dont have they second best recievein core in nfc.... u need an drug test my packers are way beta then them.. come on
Matt Mosley (12:32 PM)
Jeremy, I thought we had the firewall up to keep Packers fans out of the Beast chat!!
Matt - LA
Good Morning Matt, great name... What can you tell us about the Giants seemingly talking more about Ramses Barden than their other 8 picks combined. As a NYG's fan, I love the pick. Is this guy going to be the steal of the draft in three years? Looks like the Giants thinks so.
Matt Mosley (12:35 PM)
Barden is the most mysterious guy in that group. We know Nicks is a good player. Barden's got the unbelievable size, but we don't know that much about him. He'll get talked about quite a bit. But I'm worried about him getting off the line of scrimmage. He's played against inferior competition. Let's see what he does when Aaron Ross or someone jams him at the line in practice. I'll keep my eye on this situation for you.
tom nj [via mobile]
What do you think of Cowboys taking USC K Dave Beuhler? Isnt he more of a novelty?
Matt Mosley (12:37 PM)
Buehler? Buehler? Every time I hear the kid's name, I see Matthew Broderick. I think Jerry just got bored in the draft room and needed a good laugh. Buehler would be the kickoff specialist. Someone who could hopefully give you 20 touchbacks a season. It's a luxury draft pick -- and not a smart one. Meanwhile, the Eagles take Cornelius Ingram in the fifth. Great value. Guy might be a starter in a couple of seasons.
Any chance Terrell Thomas replaces Aaron Ross in the starting lineup?
Matt Mosley (12:37 PM)
I haven't heard anyone from the Giants indicate that, no.
How can Dallas have a kickoff specialist and a third QB? Even bigger question, why did they REACH on both???
Matt Mosley (12:38 PM)
I wondered the same thing, but personnel experts have assured me that Stephen McGee would've gone off the board in the next five picks or so if the Cowboys hadn't taken him.
I take it that you meant "has not won in the playoffs..." rather than "has not been to the playoffs..." Also, the benefit of doubt comes from that fact that in Cisnowski's first draft he found some gems like Scandrick and Choice. There's more continuity in Cisknowski's selections than Jerry's previous playoff record simply because Cisnowski is only in his second year. Just something to consider. Regardless, how about this: Do you think our local boy Daniels will beat out Brennan? Daniels has made a living out of bucking the odds and coming up big when it matters.
Matt Mosley (12:39 PM)
I'm pulling for Daniel big time. Great, great college player who didn't wow the scouts for whatever reason. I think he'll be a practice squad candidate in Washington. I had one expert tell me that Daniel should've gone to the CFL.
Rob (Lake Worth, FL)
Did you hear Vinny Cerrato saying they worked out Mike Williams the Friday before the draft to help them decide whether or not to take an offensive tackle? Is it possible that Joe Bugel can turn this guy into a dominant right tackle or is Vinny giving us a lame excuse for ignoring the right side of the offensive line?
Matt Mosley (12:41 PM)
If you're depending on Mike Williams to start at RT, you're in a world of hurt. This sounds like some sort of favor to Derrick Dockery, another former Longhorn. Williams is up there living with Dockery. I'm sure Dockery wants the guy out of his house! :)
Matt Dallas, tx [via mobile]
Matt do you think our recievers here in big D will put up the numbers this year for us to make a playoff run. I will be listening on GAC today as well.
Matt Mosley (12:43 PM)
This will be a different looking offense. At least, it better be. Lot more emphasis on the running game -- and Miles Austin will have a chance to shine as a downfield threat. And everyone should go to their computers immediately and Google 103.3 ESPN Radio. Listen this afternoon at 6 p.m. ET and you'll hear me discussing the winners and losers in the NFC Beast.
Apparently the Skins think they're fine at RT with Jansen, Heyer and a 410 lb Mike Williams. I'm not sold, especially with Randy Thomas coming back from injury (again). Thoughts on the Redskins right side of the OL?
Matt Mosley (12:44 PM)
They are nowhere close to fine at RT. I'd be looking under rocks for guys right now. In fact, I'd try to trade for Winston Justice and see if he has ANYTHING.
Cerrato is an abomination. We got Orakpo and a collection of has-beens and never-will-bes. Cerrato has set this franchise back another 10 years with another wasted draft.
Matt Mosley (12:46 PM)
Now that's not quite fair. Orakpo was a great pick and the Maryland kid's wiry and quick. I could see him making some plays in the secondary. If I'm not mistaken, the Redskins also got a kid from TCU named Robert Henson. Really nice player. Cerrato deserves some criticism, but he didn't have a lot to work with in this draft (thanks to the Taylor deal!!) And by the way, most of you thought that was a good deal at the time.
Matt, you the man. What do you think about the skins chance of picking up another big name OL this offseason, since they ignored this hole in the draft?
Matt Mosley (12:47 PM)
Aren't a lot of big names walking around. Maybe you see how Jon Runyan's knee heals up. The guy's an absolute warrior -- and the 'Skins love signing former rivals.
Al (Las Vegas)
Following up your best WR in the NFC and NFC East Question, who has the best group of Running Backs in your opinion?
Matt Mosley (12:48 PM)
Beast's best RBs: 1. Giants 2. Cowboys 3. Eagles 4. Redskins
bob...new jersey [via mobile]
hey matt why would eagles draft macklin in first rd when they could of traded for boldin who is proven...the eagles never like to pay guys.. thx
Matt Mosley (12:52 PM)
Bob: I'm rewarding you since you were one of the first guys in line today. But to say the Eagles "never like to pay" guys seems a little curious when they just dropped off about $25 mil guaranteed at Jason Peters' house. You could've traded your No. 28 pick and maybe a third-round pick for Boldin or you can have an elite left tackle and guy who's six or seven years younger than Boldin...And faster than Boldin. And hasn't taken nearly the shots that Boldin's taken. I think I'll stick with the Eagles on this one.
As soon as Crabtree fell to eight the giants should have made the move up to get him because they had so many picks and we can't have all of them on the team anyway! What would you have done?
Matt Mosley (12:53 PM)
To go from No. 29 to No. 8 would've probably meant not landing the LB Sintim, obviously Nicks and maybe even Barden. Are we convinced that Crabtree's that much better than Hakeem Nicks? I know I'm not.
Kraig (Anaheim CA)
I know the Broncos did not address a lot of Front Seven needs. However what do you think of their draft? They got the best RB by far in Moreno and a very versatile player in Robert Ayers. I also love the Alphonso Smith pick even though they gave up a 1st next year to get him. They guy had 20+ Career INT, you can not argue with production.
Matt Mosley (12:55 PM)
I know they were in love with Smith, but giving up a first-rounder in 2010 seemed a bit rich for me. Robert Ayers was a one-year wonder in college and I wouldn't have taken Moreno that early. Other than that, pretty solid draft!
shaun broadway va
hey matt, what grade would you give the giants draft, and why?
Matt Mosley (12:57 PM)
Maybe I'll hand out some grades later. I'm not as sold on Ramses the Great as some of you guys are. Think Nicks will be solid and Sintim's a total Jerry Reese guy. LOVE the Bomar pick. I'd give the draft a solid B +
Clint: (Tyler, Texas)
Aren't the two cornerback picks Dallas made solid? And isn't Michael Hamlin good value for a 5th round pick?
Matt Mosley (12:58 PM)
I do like Michael Hamlin. Productive player who can probably come in an help you a little bit -- especially on special teams. I have no clue on the Mickens kid. Hearing some good things, but my draft board doesn't go that far down.
Are we related? You can work a speed bag, right?
Matt Mosley (12:58 PM)
I was an amateur boxer in graduate school
PFT is reporting that Levi Jones is on the trading block or might even be cut. Do u think the Redskins will have interest in him as a RT?
Matt Mosley (12:59 PM)
I think they should have an interest in anyone who can stay upright.
mosley, you do a great job keep up the good work. i'm an eagles fan but have a question about the redskins. what are they doing this offseason? why focus on defense? they gave up 24 or more points only 3 times last year. they have a problem SCORING. Can you tell me why they aren't addressing their weaker side of the ball? It makes no sense...
Matt Mosley (1:02 PM)
You guys have been awesome today. I think the Redskins felt like they had to surround Albert Haynesworth with some talent. If you decided to guarantee a guy $41 mil, you better make sure he's successful. They addressed offense last season with the two receivers and the tight end in the second round. You need to start seeing something from those guys this year. Really enjoyed it folks. We finished with more than 350 questions. I'll see ya next Tuesday.
