Matthew will be here soon!
Matthew Barnaby (4:01 PM)
Pans-Caps: Tense series; one of the best series I've seen in a long time. A lot of surprises thus far. Let's get to the questions.
Eric (East Lansing MIchigan)
Does Detroit need Rafalski back in order to get passed the Ducks in this series?
Matthew Barnaby (4:02 PM)
I think they are a good enough team to beat the Ducks either way. But having a guy like Rafalski out of the lineup is a big deal.
Matthew (Raleigh NC)
Why isn't anyone talking about the Hurricanes? We won the Stanley Cup in 06. It's not like we are an unknown team.
Matthew Barnaby (4:03 PM)
No, but when you miss the playoffs, teams seem to forget about you. I will give them some props. Canes played great last night and should be up in the series.
Brittany (Durham, NC)
What do you think the Hurricanes chances are at winning the series against the Bruins and then possibly making it to the Stanley Cup? Do you think it is possible for them?
Matthew Barnaby (4:05 PM)
Anything is possible when you have a great goalie. I picked Boston to win the series and I will stick with them. If they do great through Boston, Pittsburgh or Washington lays ahead. That would be pretty remarkable to get through NJ, Boston and then either Washington or Pittsburgh.
The Ducks look good. Do you think they will beat the Wings in seven?
Matthew Barnaby (4:07 PM)
This is a great series. The way Hiller is playing, I do not know how you can bet against the Ducks. But every time you count the Wings out, they respond. Flip a coin, cause I think this one is going seven.
what do u think about the situation in Phoenix?
Matthew Barnaby (4:09 PM)
This is a tough situation. Obviously with the economy and the Phoenix owner financial situation, he would like to get as much money as possible. It looks like the NHL will block the sale and try to keep them in Phoenix. I do not see Hamilton as being a viable move as they would have to clear it with Toronto and Buffalo, since it is so close to both cities. I still hope they can find and owner to keep it in Phoenix.
Stu Myers Pittsburgh
Hey Matt...We miss you in Pittsburgh...If not for Varlamov the pens would be up 2-1 in this series. Do you think that first loss puts doubts in his head and the flood gates will start to open as the series goes on. Crashing the net seems to be the sole way on beating him.
Matthew Barnaby (4:11 PM)
I do not think he will lack confidence because the goals that beat him were good ones and he did not have much of a chance on them. But if the Pens play with the same passion they exhibited in Game 3, I think they will win the series. Malkin was unbelievable.
Dave - Irvine, CA
How does Holmstrom get away with the elbow to Wizniewski. Everyone knows if it was Pronger people would be saying he should be banned for at least 6 games. Holstrom has never been an angel. Is it because he wears a Red Wings sweater?
Matthew Barnaby (4:12 PM)
Hahaha. Kinda wondering the same thing. The guy he hit could not even stand up and he gives him another elbow to the chin. I am not sure if the refs saw it or if it was a play where he is expecting a battle in front and did not receive one because the other guy was hurt...but it looked pretty bad on the video.
what do u think about the officals blowing the whistle and not allowing Hossia's goal?
Matthew Barnaby (4:14 PM)
First of all, he made the right call in the sense in that he was in the intent of blowing the whistle and he made the wrong call because he blew the whistle too early. I do not know how he had the time to blow the whistle because it was so fast. I think it should have been a goal.
Come on Bam Bam, you know the American sports market does not truly care about the southern states having hockey or not, where as Canada could use three more NHL clubs easily.
Matthew Barnaby (4:15 PM)
I think you are probably right. But I think the NHL will end up going back to Canada at some point with another team. Canada could handle it and Southern Ontario would be the first place of choice.
During your playing career, how personal did you get in battling other players? Was there anything considered "over the line"?
Matthew Barnaby (4:17 PM)
Yeah there are things that were over the line and I unfortunately did not play by those rules. I said some nasty, nasty, nasty stuff. The only thing I considered off limits was death of a family member and kids. Wives and dogs...fair game.
What do you expect in the upcoming match ups between Staal and Chara and whose had the upper hand so far?
Matthew Barnaby (4:19 PM)
Well except for Game 1, I do not think Chara has played great. So I will go with Staal. I would not have thought that going into the series. I thought Chara would have had the upper hand. Chara had some terrible giveaways that both led to goals. Staal has had an incredible playoffs and with his performances really put him on the map for team Canada next year.
Hook (Southern Maryland)
If the Coyotes move, why not bring back the Jets or the Nordiques?
Matthew Barnaby (4:20 PM)
I'm sure a lot of people would love their teams back. We've seen hot successful a return has been in Minnesota. I would love to see a team back in Canada as we know how passionate the fans are.
Jean-Sébastien "Jiggy" Giguère
That Hiller guy is awesome, but this isn't much fun.
Matthew Barnaby (4:22 PM)
You have a Cup and a Conn Smythe. You are doing OK, buddy.
Ross (Pittsburgh, PA)
You rate it! Who's been playing better: Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin?
Matthew Barnaby (4:23 PM)
Wow! Both of them have been absolutely amazing. I honestly have to go with a draw. After Game 2 I would have gone with Ovie. But Sid was awesome in Game 3, Alex was average. Unbelievable series between these two superstars.
More likely to win tonight: Wings or Hawks?
Matthew Barnaby (4:26 PM)
I would say Blackhawks. If there is one team that can come back from 3-1 it would be Detroit. But if either goes down 3-1, they are dead.
Matthew Barnaby (4:27 PM)
Everyone keep enjoying what to me has been the best round and a half I have ever seen to open up playoff hockey. Talk next week. And hopefully all your teams win and not Barry's.
