Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternnon and welcome to the latest off-season college football chat. Less than four months til the start of the college football season. Until then, I have to look into tickets for the Indians or the Nationals. If they play each other this year in interleague, it will be a sellout. If the games are in Washington, I will call the President.
Minor Hazleton, PA
Do you think Penn State will have a chance to get back into a BCS bowl game after losing their big name WR. Also, anyone to watch for in replacing them?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
Number one, Pernn tate's non-conference schedule shoiuld leave them 4-0. They only play eight conference games. They have a good chance to win the Big Ten. I am not saying they will, but they have the opportunity. Akon, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois is not exactly murderer's row. This is not like the non-conference sked USC faces, is it?
Tebow is great, no one argues that. But ESPN's love affair w/ him is somewhat scary. I think most (or all) non-FL fans are so sick of the storyline. Can't we just acknowledge him as a stellar player and person and leave it alone? Alot of people now can't stand him simply b/c of the incessant hype he receives from media types.
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
That has happened to other athletes too. This is not Florida's fault or Tim Tebow's fault. A player like this comes along very seldom. He has won the Heisman Trophy, he has played on two national championship teams and Florida is a legitimate contender to win again. Tebow is a good kid, not an egomaniac. To dislike him because of the media coverage is unfair.
Justin Behling (Boyceville, WI)
Is Sam Bradford the early Heisman Trophy favorite?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
I think the trio of Bradford, Tebow and Colt McCoy are the three early favorites. The sentimental pick will be McCoy since he doesn't have one yet. Mark down Ocober 17th as Texas and Oklahoma hook up and that game could decide the winner. Could. It has national championship implications again too.
pryor..... what is your gut telling you on how he will play this year?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Terrelle Pryor will be tested early against USC in the second game. Ohio State needs him to do well to contend int he Big Ten. You know he will face a hostile crowd when he goes to Penn State. It will not be a very happy valley.
Beano -- that's the point. People don't dislike him but every time we turn on CF Live half the show is a love fest for the guy. It's not him they can't stand... it's the nonstop talk.
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
He's earned it. I understand how the media can keep one player up. It happens in every sport. From all resports, Tebow is a good kid.
Jason (Moon Twp)
Beano, I've got these Pirates tickets waiting. On a 4 game winning streak! Wanna catch the Buccos/Nats tonight or what?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I would but I want to watch the American Idol final. I am a big Adam Lambert fan!
Do you like the things Lane Kiffin has done since arriving to Rocky Top? How about opening vs. Western Kentucky?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
First, he has gotten a few people mad and he has to play them on the road, Florida and Alabama. He faces those teams every year. I don't know what he is trying to prove with all of these remarks. This is a tough league, rougher than the AFC West. He will find that out quickly.
What game would you pay to see in person right now?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
Williams vs. Amherst and DePauw against Wabash.
Will the Tigers do OK without Chase Daniel and Jeremy Macklin?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
Two tough guys to replace. They keyed the offense and we will see if this will be a constant threat to win its division. It is the easiest of the two divisions. Or will Missouri be a passing fancy. Nebraska closed with a good bowl win so there is an enthusiasm there.
You forgot to include the Twins-Pirates interleague game as one you would pay for!
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
The Twins are in a slump. They are not that bad...or maybe they are. I like Ron Gardenhire as a manager.
Beano, do you like what Cutcliffe is doing down at Duke? 3 more years and maybe become a factor in the ACC?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
No, I don't see them as a factor. Academics will keep them from being a consistent factor. They will win a few games every once in a while. I think Cutcliffe is a good coach -- go ask the Mannings.
How important is the Notre Dame game for Rich Rodriguez?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I think it is an important game for both coaches. The fact that Michigan is playing Delaware State is a disgrace. The feeling is Charlie Weis has to win nine games this season. You have to give Rodriguez a little time to rebuild the program and recruit his own players.
rebecca (st louis)
who will be the eventual replacement for JoePa?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I am still going to say Tom Bradley. I will be surprised if they don't give him a shot. It is a toss-up who will retire first, Paterno or Queen Elizabeth.
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Tom Bradley knows how Prince Charles feels...
brett (the ville) [via mobile]
With this being a down year for the big east, any chance of louisville winning the league? thanks
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
The Big East is the weakest conference in the BCS, and I don't see that changing in the next 10 years. The Cardinals have to go to Kentucky and Utah early
when will the big ten get with the program and add a 12th team and have a conference championship like the real conferences? also, how long is notre dame going to get away with being an independent while every other major program battles a gruling conference schedule. maybe they should focus on joining a conference instead of protesting the president.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
They are waiting for Notre Dame and forget it. The obvious team to go after is Missouri. It makes more sense to have the Tigers in the Big Ten instead of the Big 12.
Urban Meyer's comments about Shane Matthews. Fair or foul?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Urban Meyer should have thicker skin. Matthews was making a point. He loves the Gators, played there for Steve Spurrier. Relax Urban, you have won two national titles and before your career is over you will win at least two more, maybe three.
Tom (River North)
How long before Urban Meyer goes to Notre Dame?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
I think he will be head coach at Notre Dame someday, but not in the near future. Sometime in the next 10 years. People in Florida believe he will leave after the 2013 season.
Do you think Colt Mccoy will be as effective this as last year?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I don't know. They lost Quan Cosby at receiver. If Texas is as good as last year they could play for the national title. They get Texas Tech a lot earlier this season.
Butch Davis get's the Tar Heels to an ACC Title game within 3 years. True or False?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I would think that is true. Butch has to realize basketball will always be king at Chapel Hill.
Rick, St. Louis
What do you think of Greg Paulus going to Syracuse?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I did not know that rule existed, so I am out of touch in some ways. It came down to Michigan or Syracuse and he is from upstate New York so it makes sense in some ways. Wonder if Jim Boeheim is trying to get a rule change so he can play hoops. If not, intramurals? His team should be favored.
Speaking of Lane Kiffin, what do you think Meyer has in store for Kiffin? Some more last minute timeouts?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Kiffin is not exactly going to get roses when he lands in Gainesville. Obviously you remember what Meyer did to Georgia last season. Meyer is not the kind fo coach who will forget things easily.
Terry, New Haven, Ct.
How will Randy Edsall do now that Connecticut lost so many players to the draft?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
He has recruited pretty well and there is some talent returning. It will not be easy to replace Donald Brown at running back though there are a few returning players with some potential. UConn plays North Carolina early in a very interesting game.
Steve (Las Vegas)
Beano, what are your thoughts on the plus-one concept? I don't see how it solves much. The year a 3 or 4 seed wins it, the 5 and 6 seeds will say that should've been us.
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Plus one solves a lot. It doesn't solve everything. I have been for a plus one. If President Obama can get a plus-one game, Texas will become a blue state.
What do you think about MSU Spartans' coach Dantonio -- is he too old school to compete for a Big Ten title?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
The Big Ten isn't that tough. The Spartans play Penn State and Michigan every year. He does have a couple of probable wins early before facing Notre Dame.
Although Notre Dame wont join the Big 10, I feel they should play these Big 10 teams EVERY year-Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Northwestern. Agree or disagree?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
That is not a good observation.
BULLDAWG.MIKE (NORTH AUGUSTA,SC)
Are people under estmating UGA in the fact that Joe Cox has experince and was supposed to the next big QB until Stafford came in..Even with Knowshon gone UGA will have a experencied O-Line with an assortment of RBs when Summer Camp gets here...The only weakness on D would be the CB oppisite side of Prince Miller..
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Back to Notre Dame for a second. There are eight games a year where Notre Dame gives them a check. They are not going to split money in the Big Ten ...no way. As For Georgia, there is potential to have a big season, but the league is so tough that there are always stumbling blocks. Playing Florida every year is tough. Same for meeting Auburn. Opening at Oklahoma State this year is not a cakewalk and Georgia Tech is tough these days.
Make or break year for Charlie Weis?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
Again, he must win nine games and the schedule is not a Lou Holtz type schedule. Nevada is not horrible for the opener.
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
If Notre Dame loses that opener, Charlie should get his resume out the next day.
Matt (Dallas, Texas)
why doesnt espn respect the Big 12 other than Texas and Oklahoma?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
What do you think of Virginia Tech this season? ACC Champs, again?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Virginia Tech and Alabama on Labor Day weekend will be a great game. Nebraska goes to Virginia Tech this season too. Give Frank Beamer credit for playing a rugged non-league schedule. That should prepare the team for the ACC. Will the Hokies win it...seems like the ACC has been pretty wild in recent years.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Thanks for your questions. I will see you sometime again in June. I appreciate the questions.
