AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Good morning one and all - it's another wet one here where I am. Here's hoping the next hour involves far less lightning... Who's up first?
Is this the new chat format? I'm no fan if it is.
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Give it some time, Grant. It's Day One. We're getting used to it too and there will be some kinks along the way... This is my way of asking all to be patient if my responses seem a bit slower than usual... new interface on my end as well.
Kuroda or Nolasco going forward?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I'm going to go with Nolasco. Neither pitcher wows me, and I'm not drinking the Nolasco Kool-aid again, even after the one good outing... but I do think he more resembles the pitcher I thought he would be all season from here on out.
john (Queens, NY)
Hey, AJ...Thanks for being here. I'm in a keeper league and out of contention for this year most likely. So for next year going forward, would you deal Adam Jone and Adam LaRoche for Hunter Pence and Lance Berkman?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
No way. I like Jones better than Pence and Berkman has far fewer seasons in the sun remaining.
Brandon Inge finishes as a top ___ hitter?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
75? The power numbers aren't going to maintain, but the average should stay.
Christian (Stony Brook - LI, NY)
Would you trade John Lackey to get Hamilton?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
I would, assuming that I had the pitching depth to fill my spots without Lackey.
Who do you want the rest of the season M. Reynolds or C. Davis
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Reynolds. The average has been a nice surprise, and I can see 30-30.
From now until the end of the season for my SS: Drew, Hardy, or Tulo?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I'm going to go with Tulo. None of the three has been particularly good so far, but Colorado has a lot more home games than road games left to play.
mccutchen! he's been good, are you giddy about him as well?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
He has been quite good. I have to admit I was expecting him to look a lot bigger... the first time I saw him, he looked like a little leaguer at the plate. But that stroke looks really nice, and the speed is welcome as well.
Is it time to deal Reyes for what I can get considering it sounds like he's not going to be the same old Reyes when he returns?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Well, you're not going to be playing him for some time, so if you can get an improvement over *Zero* for the next month or so, then do it. This way, if he does come back less than what we expect, you won't have waited a month for nothing.
Jose Guillen (KC)
I'm only owned in 10% of ESPN leagues!! That's outrageous! I'm way better than Matsui
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Got to disagree with you Jose. I think you've got more potential than Matsui, but so far you've been way worse, and with Hideki in that wind tunnel, I like his chances of keeping ahead of you in the rankings, mon amigo.
Peter Becker (FL)
Shouldnt Nick Johnson be owned in all leagues?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Owned? Absolutely. Whether or not you start him depends on your other 1B options, but as a top-100 player, yes he should be owned by someone. BTW,I don't mind you using the name since Pierre is no longer in need of it.
President Bongo (gabon)
Your thoughts on Johnny Damon and BJ Upton?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
If not for the steals, I don't think I'd look Upton's way at all in this comparison. It's not that I have a Yankees bias, but my goodness the whole team could hit 20 HR in that park. I have to lean to Johnny Caveman.
Neit (Brooklyn, NY)
Chris Tillman? Should he be stashed in deep mixed roto leagues - when do you expect he'll be called up?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I don't think the O's are in any rush... they've already got Bergeson and Hernandez up and they don't need to bring another rookie into the mix right now. September seems right for me.
Nick B (Philadelphia, PA)
Is Zach Greinke worth trading a big bat for? In a keeper league I was just offered Greinke and Berkman for Howard
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
There are only 3 pitchers currently in my top-50. Halladay, Greinke and Haren. That's worth a big bat.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Just to keep you guys in the loop, the Q's scroll for me as well, but it means that sometimes a Q I'm about to pick moves while I'm mid-sentence. It's going to take a little getting used to, so I apologize.
Atkins out of a job, and not worth holding onto if your league doesn't have a bench?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I'd hold on to him, since I think the Rockies are more than ready to move him to a team that can use him, and a change of scenery should do him some good.
Does Strasburg have fantasy relevance this year? Next?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Assuming Boras lets him sign, then yes, I think he might have an impact if you count K's as a category... No reason for the Nationals not to activate him in September to get the fans in the seats.
AJ MassThere are only 3 pitchers currently in my top-50. Halladay, Greinke and Haren. That's worth a big bat.Johans not in your top 50? what about the fact Haren slows down post all-star break?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Santana is my
Justin (The Beach)
AJ, which DL guy would you rather have - Smoltz or Harden? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Smoltz. The Red Sox aren't likely to pull a Glavine here, and I think John has some left in the tank.
Ok Hold on here a minute AJ. First you tell Christian to trade Lackey to get Hamilton even though he's not going to play for 4-6 weeks......then you tell Tom if he can get more than "Zero" for Reyes to trade him. Why are you telling one person to trade an injured player and then tell another to to trade for an injured player?? How do you keep your job?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
King, I said if Lackey isn't in your starting rotation anyway (and since I have him ranked that way right now) I have no problem trading for a guy who may help you later in the season. That's how I keep my job, by analyzing each question individually, rather than blanket assessments "Always stash injured players. Always trade them." As Miley might say, Duh!"
What are your thoughts on Trading Hanson for a second half performer like a Konerko, Laroche or Ethier?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Go ahead and trade Hanson if you need a bat. You win in fantasy by having the most points at the end of the season, not by having the most-hyped rookies.
Joel McHale (SOUP)
I love MILEY HEEEEELLLOOOOO!!!!! What do I do with Derrek Lee and Magglio Ordonez? I can't give them away. They have no value to any one in my league and eat up spots on my bench. But I don't want to be burned by a sudden turn around... This sucks.
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
This is the point most people fail to grasp in fantasy leagues. It doesn't matter where YOU think a player's value lies. If you think that Derrek Lee will do nothing the rest of the season, that's fine, but you're not going to get me to take him from you for any more than what "I" think he's worth. And if you can't give them away, you do have to stash them or cut them.
Santans is my" ........?" I think the new format cut you off where was that one going
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Did it? New format makes it hard for me to see my previous responses... said he was my No. 5 pitcher and that worries of Mets offense keep him out of top 50 overall.
ok, so now we have to ask - who is your number 4?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Knew that was coming... Verlander is right now. It was all there in my first answer - darn it all.
Is there an updated end of the season ranking like you did in May?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
We'll definitely be doing another one. If I had to guess, I'd say it would be at the All-Star Break.
Why can't I trade Jay Bruce? Is his BA that bad?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
It probably is what is scaring folks away. But the HR, runs scored and RBIs certainly make him a top-80 hitter, and I don't think the average stays that low.
Mass And Momentum: top 10's in each? don't get scared that you'd be doing 2 lists of 10, it's not like Matthew Berry has a copywrite on top 10 lists...
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Suzuki, Guzman, Tejada, V-Mart, Butler, Pierzynski Overbay, M. Young... don't have a top-10 ready, but those names all jump out at me for my Momentum leaders. Thanks for asking!
Guy Im playing this week punts Saves I got 1 out of bell last night sit my closers (wood, bell, capps) incase of a blow up or start them for Ks and possible Ws
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Well, you need to win more than the one category, so assuming you have means to do that, then you can certainly sit them. But, personally, I would not play in a league where you can start fewer than the minimum number of spots allowed. If you are supposed to start nine pitchers, I don't play in leagues where you can only field four and get away with it.
Jason (San Diego)
you know in that last post if you were talking about Ichiro Suzuki then you called him by his first name ...
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Actually I was talking about Kurt and typing quickly.. but sometimes even in snarkiness, there is value to be found. Thanks, Jason.
What will it take for Chris Carpenter to be up there with Greinke, Doc
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
More IP. It's not that I don't love what he's done, it's just that he needs to keep doing it. Once a pitcher misses time in a season, I need to dock him a few points in my book, no matter how good he's looked otherwise.
Is it time to trade high on Adrian Gonzalez? I feel like he's not gonna see any pitches for the rest of the season.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
I don't know, it seems the Padres don't score much anyway, that's why the RBI/HR rate for Ad-Gon is less than 2. I don't really see teams needing to "avoid" pitching to him, except when Peavy is on the hill, since I don't think too many games will be all that close.
Mike (Columbus )
What summer TV Series are you going to be watching???? I am becoming a big fan of Burn Notice......
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Slim pickings this summer... I like SYTYCD and Big Brother but the only show I'm looking forward to amongst any of the new stuff is Flash Forward, and I don't think that debuts til fall.
Refresh Button (Internet Browser)
They've taken away my power, A.J.! I no longer matter. Oh well. What do you think of Luke Scott? Will his power continue, unlike mine?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Cute. I'm selling Scott right now if I can get value. I do see a slide for the second half
Brett (Polk City IA)
I just claimed Vernon Wells. What can I expect from here on out?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
I think Wells has a slightly worse second half, and finishes just outside of the top-40 hitters, but that's by no means horrible for a guy you just claimed off waivers, is it?
Peter (West Orange, NJ)
McCutchen or Morgan from here on out? Does Morga's value increase or decrease batting 2nd now?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
I liked Morgan a lot early on, and I had him in several of my leagues. After watching McCutchen for the limited time I've seen him, I swapped them out in all those leagues.
you any idea why we don't use TB or slugging as a category in fantasy normally? they seem much more telling of a person's value to their team than some other categories?
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Simple answer is that it's the way it was done at the beginning, and people are used to it. Plus, IMO, it's easier to look at a boxscore and see how your player did when you see 1-for-3 as opposed to figuring out a more complex formula.
Will Juan Pierre get traded? If so, to whom?
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
I don't think so... if anyone goes, and I don't think they will, it will be Ethier.
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
Folks that's all the time we have for today... I appreciate all the Q's and the patience with the new format... We'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
