We've got Jalen!
Jalen Rose (12:37 PM)
Phil Jackson has elevated himself as one of hte greatest coaches of all time regardless of the sport. He's looking for rings for his toes.
Pablo (New York)
Mr. Rose, what has been the biggest surprise of the Finals? In my opinion: Pau Gasol's defense. We knew he would be super efficient on offense, as always, but his defense was stellar. I didn't see that coming, and I think is the main reason the Lakers won.
Jalen Rose (12:38 PM)
I agree. He did a great job of gaurding Howard. Bynum spent a lot of time in foul trouble. Gasol did a great job on Howard. They did a great job of team defense. He caught the ball outside of the paint and they forced the double team on him.
What does Dwight Howard need to do this off-season to be able to lead the Magic back next year, and give them a chance to win?
Jalen Rose (12:40 PM)
First, they have to re-sign Hedo and Gortat, if they can. See if Alston will be content with being a backup on a winning team or a starter on possibly not a winning team. But Howard is developing. his most glaring weakness is his shot. Maybe a 5-8 foot shot. Moves where he doesn't have to dunk the ball to be effective. What a lot of people don't realize is the Howard is huge, but he's not Shaq-huge, so he can't just get away with dunking the ball. He needs short shots every now and then.

Do you think jameer nelson hurt the team oppose to helping them, and why didn't anthony johnson get any playing time
Jalen Rose (12:41 PM)
Having your best players always help. The bottom line is their point guard play wasn't always great. Alston had a great Game 3, but the PG play was pedestrian. So, as a coach, why not see what your all star point guard returning from injury can give you?
Klajdi (new york) [via mobile]
Where do you see the Lakers next year assuming they all come back?
Jalen Rose (12:42 PM)
If the nucleus of the team comes back, I predict them to be the favorite to come out of the West and be in position to defend their title. Kobe and Fisher are the only two players over 30. For the most part, their starting lineup should be in tact.
Tim Balto., Md [via mobile]
what is your take on how the Magic use Dwight Howard? With his size and athleticism I think he could have been a lot more dominating in a better scheme.
Jalen Rose (12:43 PM)
Well, domination comes in a lot of different ways. He is dominant on the defensive end. From the offensive standpoint, he can't dunk every time. That's what we said before. He's very athletic and talented, but he doesn't have the size of Shaq, where his only move can be a slam dunk. He has to be in a position to make shots, or up and unders or hooks.
Raul (sealy TX) [via mobile]
Can we stop all the labron is better then kobe debate 4 rings to 0 isn't this league about winning
Jalen Rose (12:45 PM)
LeBron James is one of the gifted players to come into the NBA and will go down in that when he's done. THe next evolution for his team is to get to the championship level and have the same success as the players he's being compared to. Being that he's only 24, that maybe something he can achieve. If they play one on one, maybe LeBron is better, but in 2009 and who's on top of the mountain, there's no question. I've never waivered on that. Who gets the ball on the last shot? That answers that question. Today, that's still Kobe.

Which team would have been a better match up for the Lakers in the finals?
Jalen Rose (12:46 PM)
I'm disappointed how Orlando played last night, especially in the second quarter. I felt if they lost on their home floor, I thought they'd put up a better fight. Kevin Garnett healthy, I thought that was the team coming out of the East, regardless, over Orlando and Cleveland.

How can a big man like rashard lewis play so small? there was a reason why seattle let him go as a free agent. was it him not able to play odom or svg's bad coaching that had orlando play so flat in a close out game?
Jalen Rose (12:47 PM)
Stan Van Gundy did a great job coaching that team, for anybody that questions his coaching ability. I think this team was a year ahead of the curve. You talk about the development of Howard and the injury of Nelson. Stan did a phenomenal job coaching. But Rashard, is a 6-10 body and is a small forward, but in their scheme he's a power forward. But he's not a finisher around the basket and he definitely can't play an Odom or Gasol. He just doesn't have the size.
would the addition of shaq truly make the cavs the team to beat?
Jalen Rose (12:48 PM)
I think a healthy Celtics team are the team to beat. I think they have the best starting five in the NBA. But if I'm the Cavs, I 100% do the deal. If you have a chance to put LeBron James and Shaq on the court in the last year of his contract, you must do it.
Jessie (Stamford, CT)
Hey Jalen, what are your thoughts on Derek Fisher calling Phil Jackson an "under-rated" coach?
Jalen Rose (12:51 PM)
I don't think Phil's underrated. I think he's the best coach in NBA history, so there's no underrating that. He's been in the NBA finals 12 times as a coach, won 10 titles. that's unique. That's special. For all the Phil naysayers, what great teams win championships without great players? Of course he had Mike and Scottie. Of course he had Kobe and Shaq. You don't think Joe Torre had great players. You don't think John Wooden had great players. Red Auerbach had 7 Hall of Famers. Phil's had 4. And Bill Russell took over for Red and won championships 2 years in a row. I don't think anyone's taking over for Phil and winning titles.
Fab Five Freddy (Cali)
Who is the better broadcaster, you or C. Webb?
Jalen Rose (12:51 PM)
Yes, we still keep in contact. We'll be getting together this summer, probably July or August. I'm happy to see Chris into it. I think it was a good transition for him. I think he's doing a good job on TNT.
erie,pa [via mobile]
How is Bryant different now that when you played againt him in the finals?
Jalen Rose (12:53 PM)
as a younger player, you rely more on your athleticism. When Kobe scored 61 in the Garden and LeBron had 55, LeBron had more highlights. But when you get older, you use not only your talent but your brain. It's just the maturation of a superstar. He's grown as a leader, as evident with him leading the team to a championship.
NEW ORLEANS [via mobile]
Orlando has no team leader!
Jalen Rose (12:54 PM)
That's one of the things that's gotten lost in the NBA in the collective bargaining. Before a team would keep a guy with 10-12 years in the league that probably wasn't playing, but is good in the lockerroom. A lot of teams give that spot to a younger, cheaper player. A lot of teams don't have that and a lack of veterans I think keeps them from being a championship team.
Brian Rose (San Jose, CA)
Where do you place Kobe on your all time list? Also does this championship add on to the laker dynasty? Or does it start a new?
Jalen Rose (12:55 PM)
It's definitely going to move him up on the list. That's one of the thigns I'm going to do over the next few days, compile a list. I think he'll find himself in the top 12.
Chris (Philadelphia, PA)
You guys have a pretty good cast of retired players at ESPN (you, Legs, Magic, Jon Barry, etc)...Seems like it would make for pretty good pick up games...Do you guys ever get to play?
Jalen Rose (12:56 PM)
I'm the only analyst that actually practices what he preaches on all of these networks, let's get that out in the open. Jalen gets into the gym and plays with these guys. I'm going to the gym today. My media colleagues enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to just have on their blazer and their tie. I'm the most recent retiree, so I'm the most active.
Jalen Rose (12:58 PM)
Follow me on Twitter and JalenTV.com. Congrats to the Los Angeles Lakers. Tremendous season by the Orlando Magic. Watching both of these teams for me was just the evolution of the sport. There used to be specialists that had major roles for teams - guys to shoot, rebound. Now you have to have multiple players with multiple skills. Hedo, Pau, Lamar, big men running the break. Ariza is rangy and athletic. That's one fo the things I really liked about watching these teams play. I like where the NBA is going. For all of you ballers out there, who aspire to play on any level, note every 7-foot center has been a 6-2 point guard. But you must develop the skills.
