James Quintong (2:59 PM)
Good afternoon everyone. Lots of questions already, so away we go.
Have Ibanez coming back off the DL, so I need to drop either Marquis or Millwood. Who do you trust more for the 2nd half?
James Quintong (3:00 PM)
I think I like Millwood a little bit better than Marquis, but it's close. I might even try to deal off one of them if you've got the chance.
Why won't anyone talk about Chris Ianetta? He was super hyped as a sleeper going into the season, but has disappointed and is being outperformed by free agents like Suzuki, Pierzynski, Napoli...
James Quintong (3:02 PM)
Injuries got to him a bit, and he's still got 10 homers although a terrible average. There's still room for improvement, but it also shows that you probably could wait a bit on catchers, especially in ESPN standard leagues.
In a dynasty league would you trade Nathan for Porcello? I could use young pitching help for the future but since Porcello is not a power pitcher I have a tough time gauging his future. THoughts?
James Quintong (3:04 PM)
It's a close call, but I think the Tigers are trying to make Porcello pitch to contact early on and not pile up the strikeouts (and run up high pitch counts in the process). He does have good stuff, and in due time will pile up the K's.
What's with the one chat a day?
James Quintong (3:04 PM)
Just a brief hiccup with things, thanks to people being on vacation and whatnot. Should be back to normal next week.
A guy in my league just dropped Scott Rolen and I am HURTING at 3B playing with Cantu and McGehee. Should I pick him up?
James Quintong (3:06 PM)
Why would someone drop Rolen at this point? Go ahead and get him, he's playing at a level close to his prime, and is probably a better bet than what you've got.
Sean (New Haven)
What's Pablo Sandoval's value if he's C eligible? What kind of OF should one trade for him or can he hold his own at the Corner Infield slot in a 10 man mixed league?
James Quintong (3:07 PM)
He's among the top guys at catcher, and right now he's hitting enough to be a solid corner infielder as well. I'm not exactly sure what you need, category-wise, but you could a top 30ish OF for him.
thoughts on Morrow in 2nd half?
James Quintong (3:08 PM)
I'm a bit down on him right now, as Morrow tries to figure out what to do with him. He'll have some good games (some high-K games, for instance), but right now he's a bit too inconsistent for my tastes.
Please rank em: Scherzer, Volstad, Kuroda.
James Quintong (3:09 PM)
Scherzer, Kuroda, Volstad -- although Volstad did look good in the shutout the other day.
James, are you a believer in Smoltz? I'm not sure if I should try to unload him now while he still has 'some' value or take the bumps now and wait for better #'s in August/September. Him or Kuroda from here on out?
James Quintong (3:11 PM)
I think I'd take Kuroda right now. While I think Smoltz will still have a few good outings in him, I'm not sold on him the rest of the way. Let's hope the name value nets you something useful.
Quick question- if you owned Hanrahan when the suspended game started but dropped him before it ended, do you still get his stats for that game? Or does the current (if any) owner of Hanrahan vulture that win?
James Quintong (3:14 PM)
Good question, although I can only give you an incomplete answer. I think in a head-to-head league, you'll get his win because he would've been on your roster/lineup at the time the game started (and stats from that game get applied to that original week). Beyond that, I think the stats earned Thursday get applied now, so it's possible the current Hanrahan owner could get the victory.
When do you see Beltran coming back? And do you see him returning to the same level he was at before the injury?
James Quintong (3:15 PM)
It sounds like Beltran likely won't be back until sometime next month. While I think he can still play up to his level when he returns, it's a matter of when. If you've got bench space, you might as well hold on to him, but I'd temper expectations of how much playing time he'll have.
Actually, in yesterday's chat they said that the stats get applied retroactively in ESPN leagues - so whomever had Hanrahan on May 5 gets credit for the win.
James Quintong (3:16 PM)
Thanks for the clarification.
Carlos Quentin (Chicago)
What's your thoughts on me for the 2nd half? .300 /15/50?
James Quintong (3:16 PM)
Seems a bit optimistic. How about .280/12/40 -- I like him, but maybe not as much as others.
Jeff (York, PA)
JQ, Name game for the rest of this season: Corey Hart or Luke Scott?
James Quintong (3:17 PM)
I'll go with Scott.
Ty. New jersey [via mobile]
What do you think of jayson werth's worth?
James Quintong (3:18 PM)
The average could use a little help, but he's got legit power and solid speed. The 20 HR/12 SB combination is very nice. That's one heck of an outfield the Phillies have; they're all going to the All-Star Game, as Werth got the call to replace Carlos Beltran.
JQ: Adam Lind thoughts on his .300/19/57?
James Quintong (3:20 PM)
I think it's legit. He was a hyped prospect to begin with, it just took a little bit for him to round into shape. Might be much to expect 40 homers total, but getting something in the mid-30s would be great.
James, I play in a 16 team deep league, but with shallow bench space. I have Chris Davis on my team right now, is he worth holding onto for the rest of the season, or should I cut my loss now.
James Quintong (3:22 PM)
Tough call in a 16-team league, but right now it's not even assured he'd be the first guy to get called up from the minors when the Rangers need another bat, since Smoak is there ready to pounce. If you've got shallow bench space, I'd say cut him.
Should I sell Vazquez high? This injury plus the fact that his second halfs are usually not great?
James Quintong (3:24 PM)
I kinda like Vazquez and think he'll be fine, so I don't know if I'd sell high. For those wondering, Vazquez will miss Sunday's start with an abdominal injury. However, it's possible that he could start the Braves' first game after the All-Star break, so the team may just be giving him a little extra rest.
With Soto going on the DL, should i replace him with K. Suzuki or Doumit? Thoughts on Doumit coming off the DL? Thank you good sir!
James Quintong (3:25 PM)
I've got Doumit in a couple of leagues (and stashed him away when he was on the DL), so I'd say go with him. I think he'll be a pretty solid hitter the rest of the way. It looks like good timing on your part that Doumit is coming back when Soto is going down.
Joliet Jake (IL)
YO YO YO James!! Any value out of Tim Hudson when he gets off the DL?
James Quintong (3:27 PM)
I don't see a whole lot just yet. I don't think the Braves will want to throw him into the rotation right way, but possibly as a reliever and then maybe some starts later on. Minimal value in mixed leagues, but an intriguing guy in NL-only leagues.
Trade Utley for Lincecum if I need the pitching? I know I'm giving up the better player, but I have more room to move up in the pitching categories. Thanks JQ!
James Quintong (3:29 PM)
Well, that'd be about the level of player I'd see in a deal like this. I think I'd rather keep Utley over Lincecum, but it's close, and it would depend on your standings in the particular categories (as well as who would be replacing Utley).
Hi James, I love your chats. Who do you replace Torii Hunter with of the following: Juan Rivera, Milton Bradley, or Michael Cuddyer? Also any word on the seriousness of Damon's injury?
James Quintong (3:29 PM)
I'd jump on Rivera in a second.
JQ, rest of the way...Aramis or Sandoval? JP Howell or Jenks?...and why?
James Quintong (3:31 PM)
I think I'd take Aramis for the power, although I'm a big Sandoval fan. I think I'd still go with Jenks over Howell, mainly because I believe Jenks will get all the save chances while Howell may still lose a couple here and there.
Nelson Cruz has been in a slump lately, and now has seen some bench time. How long is this guy going to be on the bench, how do you see him playing when he comes back?
James Quintong (3:33 PM)
Somehow Andruw Jones' hot bat has gotten him back in to the lineup. Cruz seems to be in only against lefties lately, so that's not good for his value. I wasn't as high on him as others were, even with his hot start, so I'm not really buying him either.
Soriano the man now in Atlanta? Have Gonzo but it's not looking too promising lately.
James Quintong (3:35 PM)
I think Bobby Cox likes playing the hot hand, and that's what Soriano is. He also will play matchups when necessary, which is why Gonzalez will be in there in eighth inning when necessary. I think both guys will split saves the rest of the way, so each guy has value, just not as much as you hope for.
Edgar (Wauwatosa, WI)
Cliff Lee has been killing me! Would you roll the dice him today vs Detroit if you were on a season start limit? Those Tigers feast on struggling lefties...
James Quintong (3:35 PM)
I'm still buying Lee, even with his struggles, so I'd take the risk on him.
Chris (Lynchburg, VA)
Spot start Blanton tonight against Pittsburgh?
James Quintong (3:36 PM)
He's been pitching well of late, and against the Pirates lineup, I'd be sure to get him in there.
Tommy Hanson's Coors outing, bump in the road or sign of things to come?
James Quintong (3:37 PM)
Just a bump in the road. It is Coors, after all.
Is Everth Cabrera worht a pickup if I need steals? Or do I give up too much in other categories?
James Quintong (3:38 PM)
Depends on how deep your league is. I wouldn't be keeping him in there all the time in ESPN standard leagues, but in an NL-only or a really deep mixed league, I might take the risk on him if you're low on options.
Francisco Leery-ano (MIN)
At what point does "upside" become "just not getting it done"?
James Quintong (3:40 PM)
We're getting dangerously close in this case. Liriano had been getting it done, somewhat, in recent outings, so the "upside" is that there's the potential for good things. I'm not terribly sold he'll have a huge turnaround in the second half, but I don't think he'll be really awful either.
Brett (Raleigh, NC)
Hi James, what's your take on Matt Kemp hitting eighth? He was hitting eighth against Oliver Perez and he's raking lefties. I understand that Mark Loretta is MVP material but what is Joe Torre thinking?
James Quintong (3:43 PM)
I still can't figure it out, to be honest, but Kemp is still putting up great stats from that spot, so I suppose why mess with a good thing. I did wonder why Casey Blake and Mark Loretta were hitting ahead of Russell Martin, Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp in the Dodgers lineup the other day.
Give a Cardinal not named Albert some love - Is Ludwick starting to come around? What are your thoughts on him for the second half?
James Quintong (3:44 PM)
I think he's starting to find his swing a little. The numbers will bump up in the second half.
Thanks for helping us out w/ your chats!Deep roto league - who do you think has more value the rest of the season: Andruw Jones or Franklin Gutierrez?
James Quintong (3:46 PM)
The rest of the way, I think I'm going with Gutierrez. Jones has been great lately but I think it's a bit of a hot streak. Long-term, I'd say Gutierrez.
David (San Diego)
With such a strong lineup wouldnt you argue that the only real thing kemp is missing out on in batting so far in the lineup is RBI's? and thats only cause Blake, Martin, Loney and until late Ethier are slumping?
James Quintong (3:46 PM)
The run total is a little lower, too. But the other numbers are great.
Chip (Portland, Maine)
I'm trying to decide between 2 very inconsistent starters: David Price or Wandy Rodriguez. Who would you take?
James Quintong (3:47 PM)
I'd take Wandy at this point, although Price did show me something against Halladay on Thursday. I supposed Wandy is less inconsistent at this point.
Do you trust Grady Sizemore and his elbow enough to trade for him?
James Quintong (3:49 PM)
Depends on what you'd give up. I'd take a small risk on him, but I wouldn't deal away one of your main building blocks to get him either. Sizemore is hitting a little bit again, so there is some hope.
Doug (Durham, NC)
What are your thoughts on Alex Gordon who looks to be back after the All-Star break. He's been doing well in the minors during his rehab. What kind of line can we expect for the 2nd half?
James Quintong (3:51 PM)
I'm still waiting for him to really turn the corner, so let's be a bit conservative in his potential stats: .260/8 HR/30 RBIs
Verlander or Lester going forward? Verlander has been more consistent so far, but Lester has looked filthy his past 4 or 5 starts
James Quintong (3:53 PM)
I like Verlander a lot and would go with him, but Lester closed the gap on him very quickly.
Hitters are figuring not to chase a lot of Greinke's go to pitches. He a good sell high right now?
James Quintong (3:54 PM)
I think we're close to the peak of Greinke's trade value right now. It's hard for him to be as amazingly dominant as he was early on, and he's looking a bit more human now. He'll be good in the second half, but those numbers are ticking slightly in the wrong direction.
We enter the 'Name Game' segment yet? If so: Fransisco or Aardsma?
James Quintong (3:56 PM)
I don't necessarily have a lightning round, but to answer your question -- Aardsma
On the A Gordon note, any steals??
James Quintong (3:57 PM)
Maybe like 4 or 5 at best. I don't think he's going to be running a whole lot.
Joe (Bx, NY)
What do you think of Josh Johnson in a long term keeper league? Does his innings increase worry you or can we be confident about next year? Thanks.
James Quintong (3:59 PM)
I think I'd be confident in him going forward. The innings increase is a bit of a concern, but at the same time, he's getting past that level where you have to worry about huge jumps in innings.
Lets's give Alex Gordon some more love. Gordon, Encarnacion, or Doumit, with Sandoval moved from C to 3rd
James Quintong (4:00 PM)
Let's go with the Doumit/Sandoval mix.
The Clock Guy (New York)
It's time for this chat to end.
James Quintong (4:01 PM)
Well, I suppose it is. Sorry I couldn't get to all of your questions. Good luck, have a great weekend and enjoy the All-Star Game festivities.
