BEANO COOK (3:31 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am 1-0, and it is a good start. To tell the truth, in recent years, I have not done that well. I have not killed you, but I have put you in the hospital. I will make my next pick at the end of the chat.
Beano, hows it going? How good do you think Alabama is?
BEANO COOK (3:33 PM)
It is one of the best teams in the country, but they play in a tough conference. The game at Mississippi is going to be a tough game. If the Tide can win that game, there is a good chance they will play for the national championship. Of course there could be Florida in the SEC title game again; they don't meet during the regular season. I am picking Mississippi to win the SEC West. The Rebels must prove they can win a big game, and that is a big game.
Blake (Abilene, TX)
Its Obvious that people have a lot of respect for Al Groh because I have not herd any negative comments about him. I have to think that if he does not get things turned around before the game against TCU that he will be in hot water.
BEANO COOK (3:37 PM)
Losing to William and Mary was a disaster. Everyone in the state of Virginia, including Thomas Jefferaon, is still trying to figure out how that happened. Groh is under pressure and TCU is a very tough defensive team under coach Patterson. This will be a challenge for sure.
Aaron King (Memphis,TN)
Safe to say, Mike Floyd is the best sophomore reciever in college football, if not all of college football?
BEANO COOK (3:39 PM)
It's one game. He is very good, but it is one game. All of a sudden Notre Dame is back on top of the world after one win. If Texas and Florida are both undefeated, and the Irish is undefeated, Notre Dame will not play for the national title. The Irish has to root for those teams to lose. Don't be shocked if Notre Dame and Penn State play for the national title. Penn State's schedule is the easiest of any of the top-rated teams.
Better run organization, Congress or FSU time-management?
BEANO COOK (3:40 PM)
That's easy, FSU time management. That says a lot. Florida State has some good days, Congress doesn't. The best thing I can say is Congress gets a lot of days off.
Steve (Denver, CO)
Do you see Iowa bouncing back from their poor performance last week? How do you see them finishing the season if their run game continues to struggle?
BEANO COOK (3:42 PM)
They'd better. Northern Iowa had two shots at winning field goals and both were blocked, what were the odds of that. Iowa won't play teams in the state of Iowa for some games this season.
Who has a bigger game this weekend old mighty one: Tate Forcier or Matt Barkley?
BEANO COOK (3:42 PM)
It is big for both.
BEANO COOK (3:42 PM)
Barkley has the disadvantage of playing on the road.
James Morgan (The Carolinas)
Has the game offensively passed by Steve Spurrier?
BEANO COOK (3:44 PM)
I don't think so. It is a lot easier to have an offense at Florida than it is at South Carolina. Let's see what happens against Georgia, though it is a tough road game and the Gamecocks have averaged around 10 ppg. in the last eight series meetings.
Do I have to pray for 2 undefeated teams to keep PSU (and their pathetic schedule) out of the National Title game?
BEANO COOK (3:47 PM)
Yes, I think so. You could see others like BYU run the table too. Penn State will finish ahead of BYU regardless. The Big Ten doesn't want the plus-one for obvious reasons. The Big Ten is outsmarting all of the other conferences by playing just eight league games. Other big leagues play eight conference games. The Big Ten knows it is not as good as other conferences, but playing soft non-league games, plus eight league contests, it helps. Penn State would have played for the national title if it beat Iowa last year. By the way, Penn State could be worth taking with the points in a title game with Paterno having time to prepare.
Joey Harrington (Portland,OR)
Biggest surprise of the opening weekend?
BEANO COOK (3:48 PM)
BYU over Oklahoma, even with the ranking. Richmond over Duke and William and Mary over Virginia were surprising. Duke will have a difficult time competing in big-time football. Coach K and company will be ready in November.
Jeff (Ann Arbor)
Hey Beano, great FSU-Miami game the other night? Reminded me of many great games in the 80s and 90s. So what do you think? Two programs on the way back or just to evenly matched (yet mediocre) programs that put on a good show? Thanks.
BEANO COOK (3:49 PM)
It was a great game. They won't be playing in the opening game next year, but it is a great rivalry.
TJ (Vermillion, SD)
Why is Missouri getting so much love after beating a very bad Illinois team? i mean the only weapon that they have is juice williams. Why can't Nebraska get some attention. They were ranked and they are the favorites in the big 12 north.
BEANO COOK (3:50 PM)
Number one, Missouri has more sportswriters as graduates in the country, across sportspages all over the nation. It is one game, everybody should relax. Illinois will have problems, it is not a good team. Nebraska beat Florida Atlantic, that is one game as well. Let's not go overboard.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Cook: I'd be surprised if Penn State ran the table this season. The O-Line struggled with its run blocking Saturday and I'm a bit concerned that the kicking game won't be there when needed. The secondary is also suspect (gave up a long TD pass Saturday). I see them winning nine or ten games but someone will beat them.
BEANO COOK (3:52 PM)
They play in the Big Ten, not the SEC, Big 12 or Pac-10. The non-conference schedule is a breeze. If the Nittany Lions played in the SEC, it would be 3-4 losses. Remember that Paterno is still involved and he makes the tough calls.
The ACC looked awful in week 1 and the Big East didn't look much better. Shouldn't the BYU's, TCU's and Boise St's have a chance at taking BCS spots away from these conferences when they are not worthy of a bid?
BEANO COOK (3:52 PM)
I disagree with that. The Mountain West should definitely have a spot. There should be seven spots and three wild cards.
Pete (Cupertino, CA)
Are both Michigan and Notre Dame in a no-win scenario this weekend? It seems that a win by either team could be put down to playing an over rated opponent.
BEANO COOK (3:54 PM)
There is some truth to the observation. Michigan beat Western Michigan ad Notre Dame beat Nevada last week. The winner will have a big victory under its belt. If the Wolverines win, watch out.
Pop Risley (Pittsburgh,PA)
What will it take for Ohio State to beat USC this weekend?
BEANO COOK (3:56 PM)
This is put up or shut up for the Buckeyes. Lose this and the team will lose two others. This is the only tough non-conference game, it is in Columbus and this is a Big Ten team, not an SEC squad. I feel they will lose to Penn State no matter what they do this weekend. Ohio State has to run the football better. The offensive line was a big disappointment last week. The players on Ohio State are not walk-ons. USC has tremendous depth in its backfield.
Ryan Williams averaged 5.5 yards per carry against Alabama, arguably one of the best Defenses in the country. Do you see him having a breakout season this year much like Darren Evans last year?
BEANO COOK (3:58 PM)
It's one game, but it was impressive. Let's get a few games under the belt. I am sure Frank Beamer was happy with that effort. Evans ran for over 1200 yards and scored a ton of TDs...let's see if that comparison is fair.
hey beano - thoughts on Obama wanting to place a 'sin tax' on pop and other 'sugary' treats? also, do you think the punishment on the Oregon player was too harsh or about right?
BEANO COOK (4:01 PM)
I am not the coach. No matter what you say, someone will disagree. Coach Kelly gets respect for that decision. I felt Michael Vick should have been allowed to play the whole year or sit the whole year, but that is NFL. I am a fan of diet soda, so I don't think I will get the sin tax. Congress may tax diet soda anyway because they are greedy when it comes to other people's money.
Jake (Dallas TX)
If Florida, Texas, and USC run the table this year, does Texas play Florida with the sympathy vote, or does USC play with a better SOS?
BEANO COOK (4:02 PM)
That is a great question...we will ahve to see how some of these games play out. Starting in 1954, I think it is 3-4 times that 3 teams finish unbeaten and rank 1-2-3 in AP poll. It is pretty unlikely, especially with 12-13 games.
happy belated birthday beano! you are truly the best!
BEANO COOK (4:02 PM)
Matt (San Diego)
Beano...UCLA-Tennessee? Homefield is the edge or do my Bruins have a shot?
BEANO COOK (4:05 PM)
Good game, hope it lives up to last year, when they went overtime and the Bruins pulled off the upset. Give UCLA credit for playing good non-conference games, just like USC does. This is a real toss-up. Lane Kiffin can help make a name for himself with a win here, but a bigger name the following week if he wins.
Hi Beano, love the Pod-Cast with Ivan and a big fan. But why the Penn State/Joe Paterno hate? Granted this year PSU out of conference schedule, which was made years ago, is not great. But PSU has Alabama next year, and have played Nebraska, ND and other top programs. Look at Florida's out of conference schedule? As Ivan has pointed out, Florida has not played an opponent from outside of Florida since 1991. You always defend them by saying that they play in the SEC, but the Big 10-SEC bowl game record is more even than you think. Again, why the hate on PSU and not more skepticism of the mighty Gators?
BEANO COOK (4:06 PM)
There is no hate for Paterno or Penn State. I disagree with some of the policies. I disagreed with my parents, but I still loved them. It was no fun being grounded on weekends.
Why would Penn State get in over BYU if they were both undefeated? BYU would have wins over OU, Florida State, TCU and Utah!
BEANO COOK (4:07 PM)
That is a good point. You might be right. It would depend on the pollsters.
Can Indiana University football ever be good? They have a beautiful stadium and upgraded facilities and it's the same story every year.
BEANO COOK (4:09 PM)
Coach Hoeppner did a good job before the tragedy. It is very difficult there. It is like trying to win a war with the Swedish army. In today's world it could happen, but you need a perfect storm. However, Indiana is not going to become big-time if it moves any home games to the Virginia-Maryland area (next year vs. Penn State).
Erica Parker (Shelbyville,TN)
How good can Miami's Jacory Harris be?
BEANO COOK (4:11 PM)
Very good after the other night. It was one game, but I was really impressed with his poise. Harris can really make plays. Miami has such a rough four-game start to the season, but that was a huge win for Randy Shannon.
Hey Beano, do you think there is any shot of Oklahoma State running the table and bringing home a Big 12 title?
BEANO COOK (4:12 PM)
It is unlikely but they do get Texas in Stillwater at Boone Pickens Stadium. That is going to be a huge game. Oklahoma State has so many weapons with Robinson at QB, Hunter at RB and Bryant at WR.
dave (st paul minnesota)
going to the gopher game sat eve in the new stadium . have had a 27 year dry spell . can t wait. can the new stadium help the program. ? ps./ will have my headphones on and listen to you as always on espn radio sat eve at 730 central time thanks
BEANO COOK (4:13 PM)
I think it is great playing outdoors there. Bring a sweater or two in November. For the record, that is the way it should be played.
After seeing LSU struggle against Washington Saturday night, do you think the SEC West comes down to Ole Miss/Alabama?
BEANO COOK (4:14 PM)
I like Mississippi to win the SEC West over Alabama. For those LSU fans, remember it was a road game and Washington was fired up having a new coach and a new beginning. It was week one of the season.
Marc (Malden, MA)
What happens if Notre Dame goes undefeated and is left out of the BCS Title Game?
BEANO COOK (4:15 PM)
The earth will still revolve around its axis.
Do you expect to see FSU v. Miami rematch in the ACC title game?
BEANO COOK (4:17 PM)
No, but not impossible.
Impressive pick last week. I hope this week you pick UM / ND. My question is this: If UM were to beat ND do you think they will go on to win 8 games this year?
BEANO COOK (4:19 PM)
Yes, I think so. They will win the other two non-league games, therefore 4-0 into the Indiana game. Count that as a win, so 5-0 with seven to play means they would need just three more to get to eight. They still would have Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State, and only the Spartans are on the road. The answer is yes.
thank you byu
BEANO COOK (4:20 PM)
Yeah, I understand that you are thanking him. I assume you mean thanks for the win, and not the Bradford injury. Then again a lot of fans root for things like injuries.
I'm no physicist, but I think the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun. Now how about a little Georgia Bulldog talk... any positives that you think we can take away from the Oklahoma State game?
BEANO COOK (4:21 PM)
didn't I say rotate on its axis? Georgia can take the fact the game was on the road into consideration. This could be a rough season for Mark Richt's etam, though Georgia should beat South Carolina this week.
What are the odds that Dan Hawkins gets fired after this season?
BEANO COOK (4:23 PM)
I don't know. They were pretty good last year. The loss to Colorado State certainly doesn't help.
BEANO COOK (4:24 PM)
Nick Saban got a three-year extension today. College coaches have to realize the NFL has a lot of wacky owners. Nick Saban had complete control with the Dolphins and went 15-17.
can i please get my ? answered Beano.....What do you think of Tim Tebow? Do you think that he will make a chance to play Quarterback in the NFL? Where do you think he is drafted?
BEANO COOK (4:26 PM)
Ask Mel Kiper, and he thinks he will be an H-back. Someone will give him a shot. No matter what happens, he is one of the greatest players in college football history.
BEANO COOK (4:27 PM)
Time for the pick. I am sitting at 1-0, which is better than 0-1. I have hovered around the .500 mark in recent years. This week I am going for an upset, Ohio State 27, USC 21. The easy way would have been USC 27-24, but I think Ohio State will win. This is the time for Terrelle Pryor to step up.
BEANO COOK (4:27 PM)
See you same time next week, 3:30 pm ET. Enjoy the week of college football.
