Ted Miller (2:59 PM)
Howdy and que pasa?Chat time. Fire away.
Ted, what's your gut feeling about Masoli's injury? I love Costa, but not sure he would get it done at Washington. For some reason the Fuskies don't like us much.
Ted Miller (3:01 PM)
I don't know, but if it were a serious deal I think Oregon would have made an announcement -- just as they did with WT III and Gasper. I've heard the rumors, too, but Masoli was throwing at practice Wednesday so that sounds like a sprain, not an ACL...does that mean he plays at UW at Oct. 24. No.
How good is Oregon State? Would you consider that a legit non-conference win for the Bearcats of Cincinnati. Most people here in the east don't think so. I think otherwise. Rodgers brothers are good!
Ted Miller (3:03 PM)
Well... Oregon State has finished ranked in the top 25 the previous three seasons... how many teams back east can claim that? IT was a quality win. The degree of quality will be based on what the Beavers do going forward. This is typically when Oregon State asserts itself.
terrylee vaughn (ware shoals,sc)
wht u think bout south carolina chances at beatin alabama
Ted Miller (3:04 PM)
Not great... Alabama has been the most complete team thus far. But Spurrier still has his tricks and the Gamecocks are solid... nothing shocks me any more, but I'd have a hard time picking against the tide.
Rj (Pasadena Ducks = heaven)
hey ted, who has the best defense in the pac 10? i think you could make a strong case for oregon, especially now that they're getting t.j ward back, my opinion hes the best hitting safety in the conference.. and what are the chances two pac 10 teams make a bcs bowl berth? thanks.
Ted Miller (3:06 PM)
I think USC has the best D in the Pac-10. Oregon's is very good but its toughest work probably lies ahead. As for two BCS, if the Ducks and Trojans win all their games -- other than their Oct. 31 meeting -- there's a decent shot for two teams. Might need some help though. SEC likely gets an at-large. And Boise, too.
If USC wins Saturday how much cred. does it hold with most people thinking ND is overrated
Ted Miller (3:08 PM)
It's a quality win. An elite, national-championship statement win? No. But how many teams play as tough a nonconference schedule as USC -- at Ohio State, at ND?
Preston (State of Jefferson)
Did Boise States game last night help or hurt the Broncos chances for a BCS bid?
Ted Miller (3:10 PM)
IF Boise wins out, it will get invited to a BCS bowl game... now, are you talking about the title game? If so, last night hurt. Kept thinking the Broncos were about to assert themselves. They didn't. It's hard to win on the road, period, and Tulsa is respectable, but voters probably will nick Boise on that one. For example, I'd say if USC wins at ND, it might jump the Broncos.
Does Ndamukong Suh have a real shot at the Heisman, and who is your frontrunner?
Ted Miller (3:11 PM)
Probably not but Suh is a bad man... He'd have to post some outrageous numbers.. like 15 sacks coming from an interior guy...as for the frontrunner, it's still probably Tebow, but if Clausen beats USC, he may jump to the fore.
Florida has punted only 11 times all year, which is by far the lowest total in the FBS. Are the concerns about Florida's offense overblown?
Ted Miller (3:12 PM)
Well... College football fans need to worry about something, right? Feel free to worry about top-ranked, defending national champion Florida's .... er what was it... offense.
If Bama Wins out, and beats Fla in the Sec championship, And sitting at number 2 and 3 is Usc, and Va tech. Who do you put in the National Championship to play them? Since Va tech has already lost to them?
Ted Miller (3:14 PM)
USC. Folks would love a USC-Alabama national title game, as good as Va Tech has looked. The hype potential would be extraordinary... gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
Mike (Oakland, CA)
Ted, I'm fully prepared the Rose Bowl to treat Cal poorly yet again. Chances I'll be pleasantly surprised?
Ted Miller (3:15 PM)
Picked Cal today and wrote about how the Bears are like that girlfriend who does you wrong but you just can't shake... my belief, often proved wrong, is that the Bears will get off the canvas in the Rose Bowl
Noah (Burbank, CA)
Did you watch Chip Kelly's interview on PTI, specifically, his explanation of his decision to suspended Blount for the whole season (so Blount can work his way back for the right reason). He seems to have the capability to rehab anyone (Amy Winehouse next?) Coach of the Year frontrunner?
Ted Miller (3:16 PM)
If Kelly wins the Pac-10 in his first season, he's not only Pac-10 CoY he'd likely get big national consideration... particularly after how things started.
Troy (Montrose, CA)
Can a 1-loss USC team jump over an undefeated MWC, WAC, and/or Big East team(s) into the BCS National Championship Game?
Ted Miller (3:19 PM)
Probably... but strength of schedule will matter... USC needs the Pac-10 to climb into the rankings and it needs Washington to post a winning record... IF the Trojans have wins of ranked teams: Ohio State, Cal (big late-season comeback!), Oregon, ND and maybe one other Pac-10 team, then it would be hard for the computers and pollsters not to elevate USC.
Are you seriously giving ND a chance this weekend? they can't even win the games they are supposed to by much.. and they lost to Michigan who hasn't played anyone either and almost loses all of their games.
Ted Miller (3:20 PM)
I once wrote that Stanford had no chance against USC. Guess which year? Said the same about an Oregon State and Washington teams against the Trojans. Do I think ND wins? No. Am I ready to bet my house on it? No.
Is the Big East a major conference or isn't it? How does an undefeated Boise State, limping through the WAC, rank so consistently above Cinci and USF?
Ted Miller (3:22 PM)
Tonight might help the Big East... Boise has a fairly good track record that has earned it respect.
If Cincinnati wins tonight and runs the table, what are the chances that Cincy will play in the national title game?
Ted Miller (3:25 PM)
That's a hard one... The SEC will be in one spot, almost for sure. Texas would have to lose -- maybe this weekend. The Big East would need to post some nice numbers to bolster the Bearcats SOS rating. So would Oregon State. And even then if pollsters were choosing between, say, USC or Texas to face Alabama or Florida, not sure they wouldn't prefer UT or USC. Fair or unfair. Of course, the interesting angle on that is that's a BCS conference team getting the shaft.
What's with the espn fanvote that has Suh winning the Heisman in a landslide? Are Husker fans that strong? In your opinion, who has the greatest fans in college football?
Ted Miller (3:25 PM)
Is that true... funny. Nebraska fans are great.
Ken (Scottsdale, AZ)
Why do you think Dennis Erickson is so reluctant to replace Danny Sullivan? Is this thing ever gonna get on the right track in Tempe?
Ted Miller (3:27 PM)
With Sullivan, my guess is he still believes Sullivan gives the Sun Devils their best chance to win. But that belief is wavering and may end this weekend against Washington. I think ASU is on the right track... 2010 should be a good season with things trending up thereafter...
yes, as of right now, Suh has 33% of the vote(46946), next is Tebow with 10%(14683)
Ted Miller (3:27 PM)
that amuses me.
Why does USC keep getting mentioned for the BCS!!!! THey aren't the USC of OLD!!!! They lost to WASHINGTON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please Explain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ted Miller (3:30 PM)
Because usc is usc... Everybody knows the Trojans are the nation's best big game team.
Leeland (Glendale, CA)
Can you think of a better match-up than USC vs. Florida?
Ted Miller (3:31 PM)
No. But USC-Alabama would be pretty good too.
Paul Wulff (Pullman, WA)
Want my job?
Ted Miller (3:31 PM)
No... but hang in there Paul.
Bob (Fairbanks, Alaska)
Do you think Nebraska football will ever be back to what it was in the 90s?
Ted Miller (3:32 PM)
Probably not... but it can win the Big 12 and play in BCS games. No reason it can't return to the elite. Not sure if a run like that will happen again...
Why does USC consistently lose the "trap games"?
Ted Miller (3:36 PM)
Pac-10 is tough... the round-robin, 9-game conference schedule plus the rugged nonconference schedule makes things hard for USC. USC doesn't schedule multiple off-weeks against patsies during the season.
Desmond Trufant looks like a future All American, thoughts on him being as good as his brother some day?
Ted Miller (3:37 PM)
That might be a little premature... he's brother is a quality, long-time NFL starter... but he's certainly gotten off to a good start.
Robb Akey (Moscow, ID)
Is there a better story this half of the season than my Idaho Vandals?
Ted Miller (3:38 PM)
Not if you beat Boise State on the blue turf
B-COAK (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)
Who has a better chance at pulling the final week upset? UCLA over USC or Oregon state over UO?
Ted Miller (3:40 PM)
OSU over Oregon
given the proximity (not next door, but same region), do you think the rise of boise st. and the major fall of WSU can be linked? pullman will always be a tougher recruiting place than others, but they still got big time talent, or overlooked talent at key spots. do you think some of those guys are ending up in boise now?
Ted Miller (3:42 PM)
Not really... Boise has been tough for a while. I just think WSU lost its way when it had its run of three consecutive top-10 finishes... it started to try to be bigger than it was, lost some recruiting battles and didn't have a fall-back plan. They signed some inferior athletes and some guys with dubious character and it ruined the team culture. Trust me when I say this: Paul Wulff inherited a mess. No one -- not even Urban Meyer -- could clean this thing up overnight.
We really need a college football playoff . . . to often the best teams don't play because of politics . . . do you think they will go to a college playoff?
Ted Miller (3:43 PM)
Robin... most agree. But I see no sign of that happening anytime soon. Sorry
Nate (Los Angeles, CA)
With Masoli, what do you think Oregon's final record is? How about without Masoli... What do the Ducks finish?
Ted Miller (3:45 PM)
With Masoli 3.0 (2.0 being the first three games)? If the Ducks -- and Masoli -- remain healthy, they will win between 9 and 11 games. Without him, 8 or 9.
what's your predition for the ND v/s USC game?
Ted Miller (3:45 PM)
USC by double-digits.... but not another 35-zip, 38-3 deal.
can auburn beat LSU
Ted Miller (3:47 PM)
Yes. That will be an interesting game... but LSU is at home and has a bye to get over the florida loss this weekend.
J (Denver, CO)
Do you think Rodriguez was hard on Forcier during the game. It seems like every time he threw an interception he was all up in his face. Wouldn't that deflate any QB's confidence in a game, having your coach yank on your face mask everytime you make a mistake? That's one thing i miss about Lloyd Carr he knew how coach everything right.
Ted Miller (3:48 PM)
Probably not Rich-Rod's best moment, but you'd think Forcier can take it. This is football you know.
What do you think about LaMichael James? do you believe he has the ability to perform well against defenses like USC?
Ted Miller (3:49 PM)
Heard a lot about James in the preseason and he's lived up to his advanced billing... James can do well against USC if his line can do well against USC... even Jahvid Best couldn't do it on his own. Got to block.
do u think it may b true that the defence coordinator 4 auburn teaches them to hit hard not tackle
Ted Miller (3:51 PM)
No... I've got a hunch that he doesn't do that.
Ted--I read you comment about UF being the national champion, strong and not to worry about much right now. This reminds me of a strong USC team back in 2006 that lost to a thin UCLA team in a major upset that opened the door to UF beating OSU for Meyer's 1st championship. Who do you see on the UF schedule (except Bama) that could topple their season?
Ted Miller (3:54 PM)
Well... rivalry games are often a different bird.Which means that Florida, no matter how mediocre Georgia appears right now, might not want to take the Bulldogs lightly. At South Carolina is an obvious one. And what if Bobby Bowden announces his retirement before the season-finale? Might the Gators be looking ahead to Alabama? Oh, and the Tide are fairly salty, too.
Saam (Los Angeles, CA)
Is Pete Carroll still bitter about Florida poaching Moody away from USC?
Ted Miller (3:55 PM)
Oh sure... USC doesn't have any good running backs.
Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)
The PAC-10 will become the PAC-12 in the year ____???
Ted Miller (3:57 PM)
Of Aquarius...oh, that's the age... hmm... 2015
Who's invited to the PAC-12?
Ted Miller (3:57 PM)
Utah and Colorado.
who is the better coach in your opinion? Urban Meyer or Pete Carroll?
Ted Miller (3:59 PM)
Haven't played for either... In 2008, Carroll was No. 1. In 2009, Meyer is No. 1. Might toss Saban up there after the national title game, though. Those guys are the big three.
Will UA te Gonk come back to AZ next season
Ted Miller (4:01 PM)
I don't think Gronk will be rated a No. 1 draft choice this spring after his back problems. If that's truly his threshold, then he returns. But I'm not sure he won't go any way because, if he can prove he's healthy, he's certain to go on the first day. He'll still get paid pretty well and he can start eyeballing his first free agent contract.
Grover (Columbus, OHIO)
Ted.... I am still at a loss on why Tebow is the forerunner for the Heisman, there are at least a dozen better quarterbacks that have stats that make his look silly, please enlighten me.
Ted Miller (4:01 PM)
He's Tebow... and he's going for his second-consecutive national title... it's not just about numbers.
Ted Miller (4:02 PM)
Ah... the time has come... Thanks as always for your questions. Have a great college football weekend and see you next week.
