AJ Mass (10:57 AM)
Good morning all! Week 7 right around the corner... So You Think You Can Chat? Yep! Second cup of coffee in hand... let's get started!
Is it too soon to start Michael Crabtree?
AJ Mass (10:58 AM)
Six teams are on a bye, so it might not be too soon if you're hurting due to that. After all, I'll take my chances with Crabtree getting one deep catch rather than hoping a guy like Chris Henry shows up. But if your studs are playing, play them.
AJ, Am I nuts for starting both T. Jones and L. Washington - my other flex options are Austin, S. Rice, and Breaston. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
No, not nuts... but with Boldin possibly out I might want to roll with Breaston over Leon. Still, you may well get 20 points out of the Jets pair.
there is a pending trade in our league. Jonathan Stewart for Steve Smith (Car) Is this "vetoable?"
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
It is nowhere near legit value. I'd certainly have to ask the guy getting Stewart what he's thinking in this one.
Mark (Denver, CO)
AJ - Calvin Johnson has underperformed, some of which from being a little banged up. But last year when the Lions were awful they found a way to get him the ball. This year it seems like teams are having an easier time taking him out of the game plan. What do you see with him going forward? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I think it's a little about being banged up, along with the fact that the Lions are more competitive this year, meaning teams don't simply play prevent for the whole second half. Megatron is still a top-10 WR when healthy. I'd start him after the bye.
Uh oh 3 minutes late... YOUR FIRED!
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I was three minutes early... your computer should be fired.
better start this week p thomas at miami or choice vs atl?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Thomas. I think this might well be the most entertaining game of the year. Saints offense operating on all cylinders and the Dolphins with a week off to prepare new wrinkles to the Wildcat? Fun and high-scoring for all involved.
Austin Collie or Kevin Walter at WR2? PS - bye weeks suck
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I like bye weeks... it forces owners to use their benches and not ride their top draft picks exclusively. I like Collie over Walter, and actually think that Jacoby Jones is a better play than both... he's my sleeper of the week.
Do you think H. Nicks can keep up this production in New York? Should he be owned in a 10 team league?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Last week was a bit of a fluke - Giants were way down and Nicks got tons of late play. I think he has talent, but it still remains to be seen whether he'll rise over Mario and SS2.
Patrick (Tacoma, Wa)
Which TE this week? Celek vs WA, H. Miller vs MIN or Winslow vs CAR?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Miller's my choice here. Not that the other two are bad plays, but Vikes have lots of holes in pass D.
LT (SD, Ca.)
Will I be a usefull #2 RB the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Yep. I liked the anger when Sproles got the goal-line call on MNF. Until your next injury, I'm riding you.
AJ: Three Tappers in the top 20? Also, who would you go with the rest of the way, Rodgers or Schaub?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
My money's on the Krumper myself. I go with Schaub the rest of the way - Slaton's poor play will force them to throw 40 times a game.
ESPN SITE QUESTION: AJ, what's the deal with all these late score corrections?? No less than 4 games in my league this year have changed results on Wednesday night/Thursday morning due to score "corrections" (I'm assuming team defenses mostly). Not only is this really annoying, but since the corrections aren't made until Thursday morning it screws up the waiver order (we reset based on record each week). Why does your system have such a hard time calculating D/ST's?? And why can't these corrections be made by Tuesday morning??
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Games can be corrected up until Saturday. It's up to the NFL to rule on what the actual stats are. If they change a sack or a rushing total on Wednesday, we'll change it then. Although we play "fantasy" our stats have to live in reality. And the NFL is the final arbiter of that, not us.
Are you buying Maroney as the de-facto starter in NE? Everybody has a story about the guy letting them down, but he's got a 4.3 YPC average over 4 seasons, and he's got a great college pedigree... And don't forget, we had all but forgotten about Cedric Benson, too.. basically, we're picking him up hoping for the home run... am I right?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Coach Bill's decisions change with the wind. Right now, I'd roll with Maroney overseas, and assume he'll get the carries - and around 7 points. I also expect BJGE to shock the world with 10 fantasy points, just to annoy those who start Maroney. You start a Pats RB, you take your chances.
Greg (New York)
Hey AJQuick question -Better flex option for this week -- Michael Bush or Justin Fargas? The byes are killing me!
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Fargas. In the end, it comes down to who finds the end zone, if either do at all, but I think Fargas gets more yards.
Also with respect to Pats, how can they get away with their tight-lipped policy on injuries? Aren't they required to at least state the nature of an injury?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
A lot harder to track down the PR department from across an ocean...
Willie Parker -- toast or worth a waiver claim? Someone just dropped him in my deep standard scoring league.
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I think he's worth a waiver claim. I wouldn't start him this week, but Mendenhall by no means has the RB1 job locked up. Parker has a good week or two left in him.
JA Samm (Bristol, Co)
Can Caddy turn into a Rolls Royce vs the Pats or will the game get out of hand too quickly?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
It's hard enough to project fantasy football on a regular basis without throwing in extra variables like super-long plane rides and extreme time shifts. But while I think this game is over early - that actually makes Caddy more appealing to me as the Pats start taking in the ambiance and forget to play D for much of the second half.
Will Santana Moss show any fantasy value for the rest of the season or has Zorn torn this football team apart.
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Zorn is awful - his time management skills were nonexistent from the get-go. But the biggest problem is still the O-line and the need to keep Cooley in to block, which throws everything else off. Moss is going to have a good week here or there, but isn't an every-week starter.
TRADE HELP - I got offerred Forte and David Garrard for Jacobs and Favre. What do I do?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
I'd take it. Favre's been terrific, but Week 12, 13? Can the old man do it? Not so sure. Jacobs, too, will likely be rested along the way if the Giants can win a few of their next games and secure a playoff berth early.
The Moon Master (New Jersey)
Flex Question! Hightower, R. Williams, or Manningham?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Williams for me. I wouldn't be surprised if he rushed, caught and threw for a score. LOL!
Do you like Carlson (easy sched. but bad O line) or Winslow (lots of targets but young QB) going forward?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
It's going to be Carlson for me. However, that doesn't mean Winslow doesn't outscore him half of the time. Still, I'd rather take my chances with Hasselbeck throwing the ball.
I think I'm going to be forced to play a TE this week as one of my starting WR/TEs. Who do you like more, Keller, Zach Miller or go pick up Finley (GB)?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
I'd go with Miller. Keller has disappeared, and Sanchez is struggling. And while Finley is playing well, I hate making a TE FA pickup to replace a TE on my roster when for the most part, you're going to get the same results.
What should we expect from Austin Collie once Gonzo returns?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
I think Collie stays in the lineup and Garcon is the one who sits.
chat etiquette question: typically, how long after you submit your question can you assume that it's no longer being considered?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Questions come fast and furious, Pete. Sometimes we don't see a Q. I'd resubmit after maybe five minutes - but we do tend to ignore the ones who cut and paste 100 times in a row simply becuase it's annoying.
Braylon or the other steve smith (CAR) going forward?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I'd go with Smith. Gotta believe they'll put it together, especially after this past week's callout.
What is the deal with Thomas Jones? He destroys the cake matchups and really struggles against strong run D's. Is that what we can expect for the rest of the season - that he's a matchup guy?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
I think that makes TJ one of my favorite running backs. It's far more frustrating to start a guy who doesn't perform against the cakes and goes off on the brick walls of the league. At least you can take him at face value.
Crabtree or MoMa?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Crabtree. It's a gamble, yes, but really with DA completing single-digit passes that doesn't bode well for MoMa, even if he gets 75 percent of them. Too many issues in Brownland- plus this week with that rampaging flu, I'd avoid all Cleveland players I can.
Steve (Portland, OR)
Hester or L. Moore this week? PPR league
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Hester. Brees spreads the love so much, and I'm just feeling a big day for Devin. It's more of a gut call, but those are the ones I refuse to ignore.
With Miles Austin being named a starter now, in your opinion how much does that elevate his fantasy status? Is he a top 20 receiver going forward?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
With WRs, I think too much is made over starting designations. Nothing has changed in my mind... this could easily be a motivational ploy to get Crayton's head back in the game. Fact is, teams rotate WRs in and out - I'd be more concerned over a drop from WR3 to WR4 than WR2 to WR3.
LEAGUE ETHICS QUESTION!!!!!! Alright AJ here we go. Yesterday I nailed an owner who has been in the league for 7 seasons with a trade. I gave: Flacco, Pierre Thomas, Lance Moore and Falcons D for Romo, Deangelo Williams, Chris Chambers and Colts D. The league is in an absolute uproar because my team has AP, Deangelo, Roddy, Jennings, Sims Walker and Gates. Is that trade able to be vetoed? I am feeling buyer's remorse because of the league's reaction, but should I? Please answer and I will copy and paste it to our league message board to decide what to do. THANKS FOR THE WEEKLY HELP!
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
If you have league veto vote, then it is able to be vetoed. The fact of the matter is, that when you make a deal, teams can choose to veto it simply because they don't like you. Now, would I ever veto a deal because of how strong it makes your team as a result? No. The deal could go either way, which makes it fair.
Dan (Ann Arbor)
Earlier you said you might roll with Breaston over Leon Washington. Can you give me some more detail as to why you'd do that?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Boldin's injury status and his possibly not playing boosts Breaston (and Jerheme Urban as well) and the Jets with Sanchez at Oakland? Could be a long day for them, and if the Jets don't move the ball, Leon might not get his.
LEAGUE ETHICS QUESTION: We currently use "Commish Approval" to decide trades (NOT league vote, because of the reasons you just stated). The Commish has a rule that if a trade gets accepted, one of the parties is allowed to ask him to veto it because he changed his mind/found a better deal/whatever. Do you like this? Or should it be: once both parties click the buttons required to put the trade through, that it is final? Pleas answer and I will copy and paste it to our league message board to decide what to do. Thx!
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
If you phrase the rule as "the Commish as a rule, simply approves all deals, but that there is a bulit-in 48-hour cooling off period which allows either owner to back out" then I have no issue with it. If it's simply, "Hey dude, can you veto it, I got a better offer" then it is BS.
AJ MASS and the ETHICS POLICE! What a great name for a band. I am gonna run with it
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
I get 10 percent of all ticket sales and 30 percent of merchandise.
JB (New York)
Don't want to pile on the commisioner conversation, but I've been commish of a keeper league for 4 years. Basically, I have complete autonomy when it comes to trades and ethical questions. It works best this way. The league voted me in and can vote me out. But until then, they roll with whatever I decide. Obviously, people can state their cases.
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Sounds good to me. They can always take their ball and go home if they don't like it.
WHAT?! What's the difference in those two scenarios? And our Commish doesn't blindly approve ALL deals. The commish decides if he wants to approve it or veto it. But if someone calls him before he has a chance to make a decision, then that rule is in place. Just like your "48 hour" idea...only we don't have a set time period.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
The difference is one is available as an option to all owners. You ask, and the Commish does it. Without a written cooling off period, it's up to the Commish to decide, which lends itself to favoritism.
Mike (Arlington, VA)
I consider myself a pretty attentive football fan, but I think it's ridiculous when chatters and hosts here use so many nicknames. You see it on these chats all the time. Some are obvious, but others are clearly not -- I have no idea who MoMa is. Come on AJ, you either shouldn't take these questions or you should recognize that not everyone knows every players nickname and spell it out for us.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Mike, all you have to do is say pretty please, but this one is fairly easy. We said MoMa, we said Cleveland, we said receptions. Mo-hamed Ma-ssaquoi isn't too much of a stretch to figure out. It's not like we called him The Barking Seqouia.
AJ, who would you start this weekend: Farve or McNabb?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
I'm riding the old gray mare til she ain't what she used to be.
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
Can someone get Mike (Arlington, VA) the whammmbulance? Man that's a lot of complaining.
Would you drop CC for the Shank?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
I might give CC one week with the new man calling the shots in DC. After that, we roll with Shank. (And for Mike, if the "nickname" confuses you, DC means Washington, DC.)
Speaking of all this ethics business, what ever happened to your Commish's Court column? That was my favorite each week and a great reference as a Commish.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
I appreciate it. Loved writing it, but right now, we're busy doing other things for the website, like these chats... but we'll always be happy to answer some Q's on those subjects. Find me on Twitter.
Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)
AJ who do I start this week, The Barking Sequoia, The Redwood Terror, or the Hungry Vegetarian?
Jason (Ellicott City, MD)
I would like to display my displeasure in your 1 chat a week. You better be writing a book or something important.
AJ Mass (12:02 PM)
Appreciate the support, Jason, and if I get a book deal, you'll be the first to know. That's sadly, all the time we have for today, though. An hour goes far too quickly. We'll be back next week at this same time. Check out the Mass Confusion blog and we'll see you the next time on Villa Alegre!
