Jeff Dickerson (11:30 AM)
Welcome everybody. Thanks as always for the questions. Let's get this thing started live from San Francisco.
Tyler (Iowa City )
Do the Cleveland Bears or the Chicago Bears show up to play the 49ers tonight?
Jeff Dickerson (11:32 AM)
They better show up. If the Bears lose...season over. Even though it was a short week, they still got two solid practices in (TUE/WED), so they can't use the excuse about not being prepared.
James (Utica NY)
Please tell me the Bears will show a pulse tonight? I mean cmon...if the D cant get fired up after hearing Vernon Davis' comments than I dont know what will.
Jeff Dickerson (11:33 AM)
Lovie Smith uses whatver motivational ploy at his disposal, so I'm sure he made a BIG deal about Davis' comments in the team meeting. Maybe that will light a fire under some of the defensive linemen, because they have not played well since the bye...a big reason the Bears went 1-3 in the "second quarter".
Does matt forte keep averaging 5 ypc with the 5 carries he'll have tonight?
Jeff Dickerson (11:35 AM)
Ha! I hope Forte gets more than 5 carries, although SF is #5 in the NFL in rushing defense (93.3). Forte looked like he a burst last week, but when your defense can't stop anybody, the run game goes by the wayside.
andrew steele (janesville wi)
why does everyone dis credit the chicago bears? all ive heard all week on SC is how SF was off to a 3-1 start yet noone has mentioned that the bears also were off to a 3-1 start.
Jeff Dickerson (11:37 AM)
I think it's because 2 of the last 3 losses were blowouts. Historically under Lovie Smith, the Bears have always been competitive...but they failed to show up against Cincy and Ari, that's why people are pushing the panic button. Plus, you have to win 10 games to make the playoffs in the NFC. Can the Bears do that?
Would the defense be that much better if we still had urlacher and piso in their, or is the Dline and secondary too bad for those guys to make a difference?
Jeff Dickerson (11:40 AM)
Of course they would be better with Urlacher, but I think the main problems stem from a lack of consistency from the D line. Tommie Harris needs to prove his worth. Where is Marcus Harrison? Why has Ogunleye's play dropped off? Those are questions only the players can answer.
Anyword onthe bears adding Larry Johnson, last i read lovie didn't shoot it down and said they would look.
Jeff Dickerson (11:42 AM)
Larry Johnson is probably not in the cards. Lots of off-the-field troubles. The Bears aren't exactly an organization that can handle guys like Johnson. How many chances did they give Tank Johnson? Some people never change, and given Johnson's history of violence towards women, this is not a guy the Bears need.
Ronald Perez (Florida)
Will harris learn by his stupid mistake?
Jeff Dickerson (11:43 AM)
I have no idea. Tommie is totally unpredictable. He could go out there tonight and have a great game...or just as likely...finish with 1 tackle. The guy is a complete wildcard.
Nicholas Cage (Alcatraz)
Jeff, if you need help getting off The Rock, call me, I can help.
Jeff Dickerson (11:44 AM)
I've seen the movie...and packed my scuba gear. But I wouldn't ask you for help...I'd turn to Sean Connelly. He's a lot tougher!
Do you know the status on Wolfe? Is he going to be done for the season? How badly will this hurt our special teams?
Jeff Dickerson (11:45 AM)
Wolfe could miss up to a month, but thankfully, they don't think it's a season ender. Garrett will be missed tonight on special teams...he's been excellent on coverage units.
I remember the days of summer, I was more excited for this season than any other. What the hell happened JD? With the addition of Pace, Omiyale, shaffer, and Williams how is the o-line worse? Half way through the season the things that were supposed to fix the broken D, Marinelli, and Smith's playcalling have resulted in the weakest phase of our team. There's no turn around in sight
Jeff Dickerson (11:49 AM)
Pace -- too oldOmiyale -- not a guard...a tackleShaffer -- if the Bears thought he was better then Pace...he'd be playing. Think about that.Williams -- only a first year starter. The defense is the most shocking thing in my opinion. I thought the D-Line would be much better.
Can the Bears afford Brandon Marshall next year ? Could Mike Martz be a option for the offensive side of the ball?
Jeff Dickerson (11:52 AM)
Unless a new CBA is ratified, 2010 will be played without a salary cap. So yes, the Bears can afford Brandon Marshall.I'm not sure if Mike Martz is the answer. He didn't exactly fare well is his last stops in Detroit and SF. Plus, not sure what kind of relationship Marinelli and Martz have after the Lions debacle. I'd rather not see another "Lovie guy" added to this coaching staff.
Why can't he defense stop anyone? At all levels
Jeff Dickerson (11:53 AM)
Here's the deal...SF has two guys I'm worried about: Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. If the defense can contain that duo, Alex Smith will probably turn the ball over 5 times and Bears should win. Can the D stop Philly or Minnesota...probably not.
Why can't Urlacher man up and put a cast on and get out there? He;s being a big Sally!
Jeff Dickerson (11:54 AM)
I know you're just joking, because Urlacher almost suffered permanent damage to his writst when he got hurt in GB.
Eric (Chicago, IL)
Don't want Mike Martz. Praying for Notre Dame to tank out, let's go Charlie Weis! Also, we're you trying to say Sean Connery like how Hines Ward would say it? Sean Connely? Really?
Jeff Dickerson (11:56 AM)
Where is my spell check???? Yes, Sean Connery. It's early out here on the West Coast.
Has anyone noticed none of the top 3 picks from the draft have ever been active for a game? Doesn't that speak to Angel-oes credit when the new crappy players can't beat out the older crappy players?
Jeff Dickerson (11:57 AM)
Jarron Gilber -- Active 1 gameJuaquin Iglesias -- Inactive every gameD.J. Moore -- Inactive every gameHenry Melton -- IRSee a theme here?
The Dish (Elgin, IL)
Jeff, any word yet on if Bears/Eagles gets flexed out of Sunday night next week?
Jeff Dickerson (11:58 AM)
Bears vs. Eagles is not getting flexed. The whole country will get to see the Bears defense try and stop McNabb. Yikes!
Any chance that Jerry goes and Lovie stays? Not a huge lovie fan but pretty clear that the good teams draft well
Jeff Dickerson (11:59 AM)
If I was a betting man, I'd say both Lovie and Jerry are back in 2010.Only way that doesn't happen:(1) The Bears get blown out every game the rest of the way.(2) Angelo retires.Don't see either guy getting fired.
can the bears get some more consistency on DEFENSE???I feel that this is just the opposite than what has happened in years past. the defense has always came about for them to keep them in games whereas the offense has been the problem.
Jeff Dickerson (12:01 PM)
Amen...and how about getting off the field on third down. If I see SF converting third and longs tonight, I might jump into the Bay.
Jeff Dickerson (12:02 PM)
Thanks everybody again. Next up is Matt Williamson of Scouts, Inc. Talk to you all next week. Enjoy the game tonight.
Matt Williamson (12:02 PM)
Matt Williamson here to take it from here.
Would a first round draft picked have really helped this High School team? I don't think one rookie would have made a difference.
Matt Williamson (12:03 PM)
No prob not and I still am a fan of the Cutler trade. But, this team does have serious needs and the draft is obviously the best way to attain talent. Gotta think that their biggest need right now is at OT. Either a big mauler at RT and move Williams to LT or a pure LT.
Cullen (Evanston, IL)
If the bears lose out the rest of the season what do you think the chances are of both Lovie and Jerry Angelo losing their jobs?
Matt Williamson (12:04 PM)
Pretty sure they won't lose out! I do think they lose tonight however. Lovie should be more worried than Angelo, but both of their butts should be feeling rather toasty.
Nic (Willowbrook, IL)
So, is Tommie Harris worth anything as trade bait? 2nd Rounder maybe?
Matt Williamson (12:06 PM)
I would think so and to me, that is a very logical move. He needs out. Good for both team and player in this instance. He has to go to a 4-3 team though and there are fewer of those than in the past. But, pure upfield three techniques do not grow on trees. He is a very rare specimen. So yeah, all things considered, I think a 2nd rounder is fair-esp to a contender.
I want to be sedated for the Minnesota game. I won't even watch how badly they will be beat. With Philly they have a chance. Philly lost to the Raiders and they beat themselves a lot too.
Matt Williamson (12:07 PM)
Wow. Not a lot of positive energy coming from this room. It is game day! I am down on the Bears too and am picking SF tonight, but not all is lost! Bringing me down.
Bigskinny (my semi-palatial estate ;o))
Short of building a wall , what does the less than spectacular Bears' D- line have to do to stop Gore???
Matt Williamson (12:08 PM)
Well, the SF OL is less than spectacular as well. Still, I do see SF having a lot of success on O tonight. Crabtree in particular could have a big game along with Gore. A lot of ways to attack this D now.
Would Tommie Harris appeal to a 3-4 team as an end? Also, if he were to be traded could he even pass a physical?
Matt Williamson (12:10 PM)
Concerning the medical, that is a great question. Who knows, but that really could hurt his appeal on the open market obviously. As for being a 3-4 end, perhaps on an attacking front like Dallas or SD, but overall, he really doesn't fit the mold. He isn't the guy that I want playing real physical at the LOS, stacking and shedding all day against the run.
Matt Williamson (12:11 PM)
Also, if you are a team interested in Harris, it would be best to have a backup plan. Maybe an older upfield guy who could mentor Harris and rotate with one another to stay fresh.
Nic (Willowbrook, IL)
I think Tommie Harris just needs a change of scenery like Cedric Benson.....Where the heck are the CBs that we heard so much about in training camp? I haven't been impressed with anything I've seen so far.
Matt Williamson (12:11 PM)
Agree with both things you said. This secondary really needs to step up, esp at CB.
Kevin (Las Vegas)
First off, I don't see the logic in picking the 49ers. I know dabears defense isn't playing that great, but I don't think the 49ers Offense is good at all. They couldn't even pass on the Titans last week. I just want to hear your logic on why SF will win.
Matt Williamson (12:14 PM)
Well, I do think Tenn's pass D is much improved from early in the year. Things I like about SF tonight: they are at home on a short week. I expect the SF front seven to dominate the Bears' OL-esp in the run game. I also think that you underestimate SF's O in general. It isn't great, but they have weapons in the pass game and an excellent RB. Cutler is capable of throwing all my logic right out the window with a monster game on a national stage, but sticking with the Niners here.
The Bears haven't won in SF since 1985...average score of the games the Bears have been in SF is 38-6...enough reason to pick SF! I dislike SF that much but the Bears almost have no shot!
Matt Williamson (12:15 PM)
Wow. Didn't know that stat. Should have added that to my list! Actually, I am not much of a fan of those historic type numbers for teams that don't meet often. Usually a totally different set of players. But..duly noted.
Matt, thank you so much for finally agreeing with the one Bears fan (ME) that the Cutler trade was not good. Anybody with a mind could have seen that. I want to give you props!
Matt Williamson (12:17 PM)
I do think the Cutler trade was a good move. Great move actually. Just look what his presence has done with the group of receivers. He has them playing over their heads. It isn't Cutler's fault that the Bears have zero running game and an average D on a good day. You can't get guys like Cutler. Rather proven commodity. Stud QBs don't change teams anymore and getting a guy in the draft is a total crapshoot. Now...Orton is looking rather terrible again, because well, he isn't very good.
Ross (LaGrange park)
if edge james is availble do you think it would be a good pick up for a number two rb?
Matt Williamson (12:18 PM)
Not so much. I think Edge is done. Seattle very well could have the worst group of RBs in the NFL (maybe KC) and he couldn't get on the field with them.
Zach (East Lansing, MI)
Is there any chance the o-line gels, Forte gets a monster game, and the running game is finally on track again or am I just another delusional bears fan?
Matt Williamson (12:19 PM)
I don't think that is incredibly far fetched, but honestly, like I said, if Chi wins this game, I bet Cutler has a Superman like effort....which is possible with him...but not with Orton.
y don't people realize that outside of the blowouts, cutler has lead the bears to a tie, or a lead in the 4th quarter of every game, aside from those two. Orton can't win a game for the broncos if they fall behind early
Matt Williamson (12:21 PM)
Agreed. Plus, what we have to always remember with Cutler is his make up. He is a big time risk taker with a crazy amount of confidence in himself. That is good and bad. This guy is going to throw INTs his entire career-no doubt in my mind. But, when everything else isn't working, Cutler is going to try to be Superman. That is when picks occur-and it is also when greatness comes out of him. If this team had one more aspect working well, many of those INTs never would have occurred.
I'm confused... Thought you said you were a fan of the Cutler trade? Eric, lock it up!
Matt Williamson (12:21 PM)
Yup. I am a fan. Think I am making that pretty clear!
Matt Williamson (12:22 PM)
This is a QB driven league and there are two types of teams in the NFL: Those with a QB and Those without. Your Bears are now in the first category...which is the category you want to be in! The other aspects of the team are much easier to correct.
Realistically what do you think Da Bears record will be at seasons end? and do you think they will make the playoffs?
Matt Williamson (12:23 PM)
I don't think they are a playoff team. Seven wins.
Completely agree scooter, Cutler has been very impressive so far. It's not his fault that this defense is useless. Guess we don't have as much depth on the D as we intially thought
Matt Williamson (12:23 PM)
You also need to remember that coming to a new team/offensive system/group of receivers is a difficult thing to do. Next year will be much easier on Cutler...assuming they don't scrap the entire O and start over with new coaches.
Orton has 4 comeback wins (NE, DAL, SD, CIN) this year in the first 6 games. Yes, he has to pass the ball and the receivers catch it....and Matt, you lock it up!
Matt Williamson (12:26 PM)
Orton can't go vertical. That was glaringly exposed against the Ravens and then once again by the Steelers. You don't have to defend the entire field with Orton behind center. I do think that Orton played very well (for him) early on and that McDaniels did a terrific job of limiting what was asked of Orton. But now, there is film clearly showing how to beat him. Denver is still a quality team with Orton going forward, but he is no where near the QB that Cutler is. Imagine Denver with Cutler...
Rick Walrath (Lake in the Hills)
Do the Bears have a set with Olsen in the slot
Matt Williamson (12:27 PM)
No question, especially tonight if they can get Olsen matched up against the Niners' heavier 3-4 OLBs. Very dangerous player and his role needs to continue to develop. But...here is the kicker...Chicago needs TE help to protect because their OTs (esp Pace) are terrible. Can't get around that.
hahahaha.....that game against cinci was a joke. lucky pass at the end of the game
Matt Williamson (12:28 PM)
True. But Cincy has proven to be for real and that was a very evenly matched game. Sorry to say it, but either team kills the Bears right now.
How can it be possible Cutler has a worse defense than he did in Denver?
Matt Williamson (12:29 PM)
Denver's 2008 D was worse than the Bears' 2009 D. But, the Broncos' 2009 D is far better than either and it isn't like the guys that the Broncos got in the Cutler deal are the reason why.
Matt Williamson (12:30 PM)
Folks, this was fun. Enjoy the game tonight. Get yourselves a Cutler jersey. I filled in last week and today-but that will be it for me. Enjoyed it. Take care.
As a Bears fan from London, what would you think if the Bears played a home game at Wembley next year?
Jon (12:31 PM)
I think if I were a Bears fan in London, or a Werewolf in London, I'd be psyched if that were to happen. If I were a Bears fan in Chicago, I'd be super angry. Taking a home game from any team, outside of Jacksonville or another blackout market, is borderline criminal.
What are the plans for gaines adams? Is he going to take ogunlewya's(spell check) spot next year?
Jon (12:33 PM)
Adams' addition has been almost invisible with all the other problems the Bears have had since the trade. He certainly hasn't done much to aid a whimpering pass rush.On the positive side, Bears fans won't have to watch the draft until the third round now, because Angelo traded a second rounder for him.
dave wannstadt (da burgh)
am i going to have the final last laugh at charlie weis saturday night?
Jon (12:34 PM)
Wanny, yes, you will. Pitt's been beating bad opponents all year, so this will be a nice test for them with Cincy on the horizon. I think Pitt's offense will smoke the Irish, but it will be a fairly close (under 14 points) game.
dion lewis (da burgh)
if i run for 2 bills against nd sat, will i get into heisman contention??
Jon (12:36 PM)
No, because the Irish defense is already giving up 148.8 rushing yards per game, one yard more than my alma mater, Ohio University. That's good for 68th in the country.
Is Ron Turner to Norv as Roger Clinton was to Bill?
Jon (12:38 PM)
I think they're both Roger.
Kevin (Iowa City)
Are we going to have anything good come of next years draft seeing as we have basically no picks
Jon (12:39 PM)
Well, check out the Bears' recent drafts. It's not like they've been dominating the draft, aside from some nice sneaky picks, like plundering Abilene Christian athletes.
Brandon (Southern Illinois)
Why is it that Ron Turner seems to be off limits when it comes to alot of criticism? Granted the defense looks terrible but the offensive play calling has been terrible for several years now.
Jon (12:40 PM)
Maybe the folks in Southern Ill. aren't criticizing Turner, but in Chicago, he's barely getting more love than John Shoop.
Do you get a dollar every time you mention that Ohio is your alma mater?
Jon (12:40 PM)
Ohio? Yes it is. That'll be one dollar please.
MR Englwood (chicago,il englwood)
Tell the Bears to stop running that dam cover 2 it dont work.
Jon (12:41 PM)
Will do. (dials phone)Secretary: Jerry Angelo's office.Jon: Tell Jerry that MR Englewood requests that he tell Lovie Smith that the "dam cover 2 don't work."Secretary: You're the 300th person to call with that request today.
What are your thoughts on people who still wear Livestrong bracelets? Is it still the 'cool' thing to do?
Jon (12:43 PM)
If it were 2003, I'd say, yes it is. We get it, you like yellow rubber bracelets and hate the Big C. Also you're looking at your wrist, wondering what Jesus would do.
It appears to me like we are not taking enough shots down field. It looks like Cutlers targets are either Hester or Olsen, when do you think they will capitalize on Knox's speed and let him loose?
Jon (12:44 PM)
Cutler took a few last week, because he had more time. Knox is gifted, but he's facing different coverages as teams are game-planning him more. It's all about adjustments. I'd like to see more quick slants to utilize the speed.
will Bears win today?
Jon (12:45 PM)
Yes, 23-20. The 49ers, like the Ukraine in Kramer and Newman's epic game of Risk, is a road apple. It's weak.
John McDonough (United Center)
Did you notice that Blackhawks attendance is down from 111% capacity last year to 103% capacity this year? Do you think I should triple ticket prices again to boost demand?
Jon (12:47 PM)
Yes, and then dazzle Chicago reporters some more with your quotability and offers of free food and giveaway replica sweaters. I think the Hawks cut capacity with the new 300-level clubs.
Mr. Old Town (Old Town)
How embarrassing would it be if Vernon Davis actually is able to destroy the Bears' D line tonight?
Jon (12:48 PM)
Very, very embarrassing. The d-line is on notice. They got a bit of a free ride after a good start, but they've been a major letdown since the bye.
Who would win the Chicago Bears or the lingerie team the Chicago Bliss?
Jon (12:49 PM)
i have some Urlacher/Briggs jokes here that I can't use. I would like to see the Bliss take on the Hawks' Ice Girls.
Jon (12:49 PM)
In football, I mean.
Brandon (Southern Illinois)
What's your thoughts on running more of a spread offense to take some pressure off of our pathetic O line?
Jon (12:50 PM)
I'm all for it. They do spread it out a decent amount, putting four and five receiver packages together. I'd like to see the Bears start out passing like they did last week.
pat fitzgerald (evanston)
why is no one talking about our win over 4th ranked iowa on here?
Jon (12:52 PM)
Fitz, thanks for bringing the purple pride to the chat. Big win for the Wildcats. In related news, someone just made a Buff Joe's run at my office.
Tom Ricketts (Chicago)
I don't really have a question. I just wanted to encourage everyone to buy a bike from my brother's bike shop in Highland Park. That is all. If you need me, I'll be inside a scale model of the Triangle Building arm-wrestling my sister.
Jon (12:53 PM)
Make sure I can eat off those bathroom floors come Opening Day!
People who think the cover-2 is the problem have no idea what they're talking about. Roughly, about 25% of the time they're in the base cover-2 defense. It doesn't matter what kind of scheme their in, they get burned either way.
Jon (12:55 PM)
very true. this gets simplified a lot because few people can break down a game while it's happening, or have the patience to do it after the fact. Plus, it's not like the Cover 2 is some gimmick scheme. Heck I learned some principles of it playing junior high football (i was as skilled as kevin payne in coverage as a 4-9 safety). Read Kevin Seifert's story about the Bears' defensive drafts the last five years. Embarrassing. Then check out the Steelers' defensive draft picks. Different schemes, sure, but man, what a difference in playmakers.
c-los (arlington heights)
I've noticed that ever since Juan Rivera left the bears, their D is not the same.
Jon (12:55 PM)
I think you mean Ron Rivera.
Do you see Chicago will start straying away from its defensive mindset now that we have a franchise QB and start loading up on offensive weapons over the next couple of years? When the trade was announced I was very excited because I thought we had an above average D but not any more... I guess my question is what do you see the Bears fixing first?
Jon (12:57 PM)
I hope not. I think they need to start drafting playmakers on defense immediately, even before O-linemen. The Bears can get a vet WR on the open market or through a trade.
One of the big problems I see with the bears D is their unwillingness to play press coverage. If they would play press coverage it would give their d-line more time to get to the Qb. I just cant tolerate watching their DB's giving the receiver a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 5. Their scheme is embarrassing.
Jon (12:58 PM)
I saw some press coverage in the last game. Their safeties aren't good enough to rely on if the CBs are pressing all the time, and no Urlacher roaming the middle. It's a lose-lose right now if there's no pressure up front. Watch tonight and see if they press.
Who will win Michigan or Ohio State?
Jon (12:58 PM)
Ohio State. Michigan's defense is unseemly at best.
mariano rievera (chicago)
ok guys can someone answer my question, is there a chance that we go to the playoffs and do you think jay cutler is a better qb than aaron rodgers??
Jon (12:59 PM)
(Enter Sandman plays)Mariano, there is a chance but I wouldn't stake my life, or my Honda Civic on it. No, I don't think Cutler is better than Rodgers. Better runner though.
Myron Rolle will be the answer for the Bears next year at the safety position with Afalava. Rolle is at Oxford right now on the Rhodes Scholarship but you can't take away his brains on the football field. Watch and see whoever takes him, how far they go.
Jon (1:00 PM)
Can you imagine the kissing-up Rolle will get in whatever market he goes to? Wow.
Instead of saying get off the bus running does lovie need to say "curling into the fetal position in the corner"?
Jon (1:00 PM)
Ok, that's it for me, folks. Enjoy the game and chat with us (again) tonight on ESPNChicago.com.
Jurko (1:01 PM)
What's up guys?! Sorry about last week. Let's get going.
If the bears win tonight do you think they will make the playoffs? If Oakland can beat the eagles, the bears can right?
Jurko (1:03 PM)
You'd think so. With the way the Bears are playing defense and with the safeties being banged up, I really don't see them beating SF. The Niners have a solid running game and the'll be attacking the middle of the field with Vernon Davis -- it might be too much for the Bears.
John (San Diego)
What's up with Marcus Harrison? Is he another lazy bum?? Also, how would you compare Ari d-line to SF's ? cuz the bears actually controlled them pretty well...
Jurko (1:06 PM)
He came into camp out of shape, and the season is no time to get into shape. So he's been disappointing this year. There aren't many big names on the Frisco line, but they're an effective group -- the sum of their parts is greater than the whole.
Bears should cut Tommie Harris...the guy is nowhere near what he was in 2006, has a terrible attitude, and costs too much money.
Jurko (1:07 PM)
Well you've already paid him most of that money for this year, so you may as well keep him. While he's not the player he once was, you hope to get two or three good plays out of him each week. He's not worth what he's making, but he's better than what they have.
Ryan (Evergreen Park)
Jurk,When will Gaines Adams see some serious playing time?
Jurko (1:09 PM)
I saw him play last weekend and guys, let's not rush this guy in. He looks like a toothpick. The happiest guy in the league has to be Raheem Morris. They're laughing all the way to April's draft with the second-round pick they got for Adams. Early on, it looks like this guy's lost.
Jurk, loved your grades. Did you get grief for being too soft on Lovie?
Jurko (1:10 PM)
Again, I think what Angelo's given Lovie is the real problem. You can't expect Lovie to build a dragster when he's only been given a 4-cylinder engine.
Where is Jarron Gilbert?
Jurko (1:11 PM)
He's in the midst of his Earl Bennett year, the red-shirt year that most pros aren't afforded, but the Bears hand out like business cards. If he's any type of player he'd be in there making a contribution.
How come the Bears didn't come out in the 3rd quarter last week and run some no-huddle offense? If you're down by 4 scores shouldn't you try something different to score quickly? It might've helped
Jurko (1:13 PM)
Yeah, I think any change of pace would have helped the Bears. It looked like when Arizona took it's foot off the gas, that's when the Bears decided they wanted to play. Too little, too late. I take no solace in two fourth quarter TDs. It was not as close as it looked.
Hotter seat: Lovie or Weis?
Jurko (1:14 PM)
Weis, because Notre Dame has already stated that they will eat contract if they made a mistake at head coach. They're more than willing to replace a coach, where as the McCaskeys, as Ditka once said, "throw nickels around like manhole covers."
The guy earlier in this chat, Matt Williamson, said the Bears will get 7 wins. That's too low, right?
Jurko (1:15 PM)
I'd like to think so, but they're not going to get to the 11 wins that I predicted. I think 8-8. They're an average team at best. They'll get one win that we don't expect, which will give the fans hope, but we're looking at a very average team.
What happened with Orlando Pace and that Offensive line? Poor Cutler has been sacked so much, he might need plastic surgery in his face by the time the season is up? You guys think they show up tonite against the niners??? Cutler needs more time back there..
Jurko (1:19 PM)
The O-line got old in front of our eyes. Omiyale was brought into help, but has been a disaster at guard. The hope there is they can salvage something by moving him to right tackle after the year. They'll be there for kickff, but who knows after that. That's what I'm afraid of. I've got a small number on SF to win the game because they're at home, have a good running game and some passing threats. Not a great QB, but maybe just good enough to beat a bad Bears team.
Who wins these fights? Lovie vs Jerry, Silvy vs Tiny, Jurko vs Waddle?
Jurko (1:19 PM)
Lovie - I think he boxed in Wisconsin as grad assistant.
Jurko (1:20 PM)
Silvy would pummel Tiny into submission -- think fetal position.
Jurko (1:20 PM)
And the distinct weight advantage would settle the Jurko-Waddle matchup.
I saw press coverage once or twice too. it consisted of them playing close to the receiver, but not even laying a hand on him when he ran at them. I think Lovie's soft mentality has rubbed off on the players. BUT what I want to know is how can any team give a 10 yard cushion when the other team only has 5 yards to go for a first down? also I've seen several times this year where the other team was around the 5-yard line and the DB's where playing behind the goal line. That seems like giving up to me.
Jurko (1:22 PM)
That, or they start on the goal line and get more depth -- it doesn't make any sense. The lack of awareness of this team (down and distance) is suyrprising and it looks to me like every time they're in press coverage, they're in press just to look like they're in press, because they're actually in a bail technique.
Whats' up with Tillman these days? Looks a shadow of his former self, getting murdered by Chad and Fitz like that
Jurko (1:23 PM)
Age and injuries have made him a shadow of his former self.
The blowout against the Bengals was blamed on gap control. Is that the biggest problem with the defense?
Jurko (1:24 PM)
Technique of the D-line, and the core understanding of what a defense is all about. Those are my two culprits. They just don't seem to have a clear understanding of what to do on individual plays.
Have you noticed the bears have drafted 2 olineman the last five years before the 6th round?
Jurko (1:26 PM)
I've noticed that. Columbo and Williams, right? I think it's an organizational philosophy... Jerry Angleo's philosophy. I believe he thinks O-lineman develop in the league and you can get them via fgree agency.
So the Bears hate being close to the salary cap...any chance they spend money next year if it is an uncapped season ?
Jurko (1:28 PM)
No. I think the cold reality is that most teams will pay their ten core guys, but then they'll pay the minimum to 30-40 other. You see, when you don't have a cap, you also don't have a minimum. Some teams will spend thinking they can buy a championship, but teams like the Bears will be especially frugal.
We heard a bunch of praise for Rod when he was brought in to help the D-Line? What happened from the first 4 games (14 sacks) to the last four games (2 Sacks)?
Jurko (1:32 PM)
As much as it might reflect on Marinelli, it might be more a reflection of what they have. I love Alex Brown, but what you see is what you get. He's a great value for what they pay him, but he's only going to give you 7 sacks and about 14-15 TFL, etc. Even at those numbers, he's the best bang for the buck. But a guy like Ogunleye will be great when he has a big mismatch, but then he'll pull a houdini and disappear for a few games.
Jurko (1:32 PM)
Okay, one more...
Tony (San Diego)
I think Hester should be traded because he still has value...he is not a true 1.....we need a bigger target.
Jurko (1:34 PM)
That ship has sailed. You should have traded him after that fantastic year, or that second year -- before he decided he wanted to be a WR. Someone might have taken a chance on him seeing what he did in the return game and thinking that he may be a good reciever. But now the world knows he's not a #1.
Jurko (1:34 PM)
Thanks everyone. Great questions, as always. Good luck to the Bears tonight. They'll need it. See you next Thursday.
