Beano Cook (4:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome...glad to be back doing a chat. First let me say something about this season. Ivan Maisel of espn.com feels it is an uneventful season and I agree. An uneventful college football season is better than an eventful baseball season. The Yankees won. If I was to vote for Coach of the Year right now it would be Temple's Al Golden. If he wins the last two games...wow. Remember, it is Temple and it would be 10 straight.
alex (fontana ca)
wisconsin is the most underrated school for every sport every year do u agree?
Beano Cook (4:07 PM)
Basketball, Bo Ryan does a great job. The Badgers don't get the material in basketball and football that the big boys -- Penn State and Michigan -- get. Wisconsin gets material in hockey, men's and women's. I remember people ripping Bret Bieliema a few weeks back.
Do you think if Michigan changes coaches they would come after "a Michigan man" named Les Miles (at LSU) knowing he already makes more than $4.0Mil/yr. or do they pass for a "cheaper guy"
Beano Cook (4:07 PM)
I don't think Michigan is going to change coaches now. See me next November.
What is the best thing you have seen in all of your years in college football??????? What do you LIKE/ DISLIKE about current college footbal??
Beano Cook (4:10 PM)
The most interesting thing besides the game is the dotting on the I, the atmosphere at college games is special. In pro football, all the teams look the same. Some do it better than others...Cleveland doesn't do it well. What don't I like? It's become too commercial. Today's football player seldom leads a college life. He is in the weight room working out. When they added a 12th game, that was a disaster. College football has become a business and anyone that thinks otherwise is naive, including the NCAA.
Bruce (Gainesville FL)
Other than Urban Meyer 5 years ago, do you know of anyone else EVER turning down the Notre Dame head coaching job?
Beano Cook (4:11 PM)
Don Shula. Moose Krause tried to get him. Shula said he would hate to recruit. That was back in the 70s. If it wasn't for recruiting, the Irish might have had a shot.
Mike (West Palm Bch florida)
Beano no team stays on top for too long. Out of UG, OU, and USC, which team could will find it harder to regroup and become a top 10 team again?
Beano Cook (4:13 PM)
I would say Georgia because it is in the SEC. The Bulldogs would be better off in the NFC. I think you will see Oklahoma and USC back next season. Remember this ... in 1966, the Trojans lost their last game of the regular season, 51-0 to Notre Dame. The next season USC won the national title.
Florence,alabama [via mobile]
did u think it was smart for florida state to name jimbo fisher as coach n waiting so early n his tenure at fsu?
Beano Cook (4:14 PM)
I did not think it was smart. I think in most cases it is a bad policy to do this unless it is a one-year wait. I believe Bowden will coach next year.
Florida vs. FIU and Bama vs. Chattanooga are nothing more than late season scrimmages. Should there be a rule about playing lower division teams after the 4th week of the season? Season ticket holders shouldn't have to pay full price for these exhibitions.
Beano Cook (4:16 PM)
Number one, a lot of this is a result of the 12th game. It was added for powerful teams but it is terrible for fans that have to pay to see these games, as you stated. There will not be a rule to change that as schools can make the schedules of non-league opponents any way they want.
Beano, two weeks ago you were asked who the best team in the Big Ten was and you said Iowa, and the only other team that could be considered was Penn State. I would like to hear your thoughts now?
Beano Cook (4:17 PM)
Obviously I was wrong. I thought Penn State would win the Big Ten this year. Give Ohio State credit for winning at Penn State. All of those critics who based Jim Tressel after the Purdue game ...where are they now?
If Oklahoma St finishes of the season 10-2, and if Iowa wins their remaining games, will Boise State get denied from the BCS again? Assuming they go undefeated again this year.
Beano Cook (4:18 PM)
If Boise State is undefeated, I think they will be in a BCS bowl. I think TCU will as well, and the Horned Frogs should have no trouble in the last two games (Wyoming and New Mexico).
With how well Stanford is playing, how would they play on a neutral field against Florida today?
Beano Cook (4:19 PM)
That is a question we will not be able to answer. I think Florida will win.
will (cuse,new york)
Will Syracuse Fire Doug Marrone?
Beano Cook (4:20 PM)
It is year one...give me a break. Let the guy have a few years to try to rebuild. Syracuse is not an easy place to win in football.
Giacarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Qc.)
Are Irish fans living in the past? Who in their right mind would want to coach in South Bend? President Reagan at the time said "Get government off our back" and the same could be said of the fans around the world."Get the fans off my back" should be the mantra of the Irish coach.Other than a reincarnation of Knute Rockne, certainly not the gentleman in Cincy or the native of Ohio in the Monday night booth could coach this team. It is a new football landscape. Fans should realize this, nobody dominates like they once did.
Beano Cook (4:21 PM)
Notre Dame is still an elite job. The school has softened the schedule and the administration lusts for a national championship and BCS bowl bids.
Do you think the human voters will ever be taken out of the equation when it comes to voting for position? The bias towards the well known teams such as Florida, Alabama, UT and others will always be voted ahead of Cincy, TCU and BSU even if they have stronger schedules and better results. (See TCUs 3 current top 25 wins over UTs 1)
Beano Cook (4:24 PM)
What can I say. Realize that people vote the way they feel, and who knows if TCU could beat Texas...it is like Governor of Illinois has a better shot of being President than the Governor of Montana. That's just the way it is. Understand that pollsters often vote based on the prior week. TCU started the season 17th in the AP poll, so they had to work their way up.
Beano it is all tied up at 17-17 with 1 quarter to go in the Bama vs Florida game. Is it Tebow> Ingram or Ingram> Tebow?
Beano Cook (4:25 PM)
Tebow over Ingram, although Ingram has an excellent chance to win the Heisman...it is still wide open. Two players who should get serious consideration are Toby Gearhart and C. J. Spiller.
Beno, Do you remember an Ohio St. vs. Michigan game meaning so little?
Beano Cook (4:26 PM)
Michigan is playing to become bowl eligible. This game will always have meaning even if both teams come in 1-10.
Is Brian Kelly the right guy for the job in South Bend? If not who is Beano?
Beano Cook (4:28 PM)
If a change is going to be made, many feel it will be Kelly, I think it will be Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern. You also have to look at Gary Patterson at TCU. Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and Al Golden of Temple. These guys can win with the mix of athletics and academics.
Jason (Junction City)
Do you think LaMichael James is a heisman contender or is Oregon simply too far away from NYC ?
Beano Cook (4:28 PM)
He should be with five straight 100+ yard games but I don't think he received enough exposure early on, plus some might consider Jeremiah Masoli too.
Isn't it ridiculous how Penn State is being considered for a BCS bowl? They have done nothing to deserve it. The only reason is because they have a big name and will sell tickets. The BCS might as well conside FSU and Michigan (if they even become bowl eigible).
Beano Cook (4:29 PM)
Penn State is not getting a BCS bowl. The Nittany Lions will get in a good game, but not a BCS bowl.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Cook: I'm interested to hear your comments on what is happening in Kansas. Might someone who was Coach of the Year just two years ago be out of work soon?
Beano Cook (4:31 PM)
It is not easy to win in Kansas...well it is in basketball but not football. Two years ago Texas and Oklahoma were not on the schedule. It feels like some Kansas people are going after Mangino and it doesn't seem right.
Hi Pope, I heard you say on the Podcast today that you thought ND would hire Fitzgerald. Why would they do that with a proven championship coach out there like Kelly who wants the job?
Beano Cook (4:32 PM)
Maybe they won't...it's just my opinion. Everyone thinks it is going to be Kelly. The schedule isn't that tough next year though I understand Western Michigan has a number of lettermen returning.
Any thoughts on the Army-Navy game being moved to December 12th?
Beano Cook (4:33 PM)
I thought that was a smart move with all the championship games on December 5th. It was smart for both schools and for CBS. A lot smarter than when the network made Walter Cronkite retire.
If Pittsburgh hadn't lost to NC St earlier this year, just how big would the upcoming Cincy-Pitt game have been assuming both teams win out to that game? Would it have been enough to push the winner above Texas and into the BCS Title game?
Beano Cook (4:35 PM)
It would have been really big. Pittsburgh has to go to Morgantown on the Friday of Thanksgiving week, and that will not be easy. As for the Texas situation, we will never know.
Beano, after the top 2-3 teams, the SEC seems to be 'average' this year....how would you rate the conference top to bottom against PAC10 and Big12?
Beano Cook (4:36 PM)
I think it is still better than the Big 12. You can make a case for the Pac-10 this season. The SEC teams play each other and you do have two dominant teams. LSU and Mississippi play this weekend and they are both pretty good. By the way, Dexter McCluster is a tremendous back.
Hey Beano, we can seal the deal on the season being uneventful! still 2 weeks left! Remember If A&M beats Texas and Bowden says he'll retire and fla st beats the gators in tebows last game in the swamp! Dec 5th will be the craziest day of the year bar none!
Beano Cook (4:38 PM)
That's true, it could happen. I am comparing it to other seasons, and it seems to be uneventful. We are all waiting for the Florida-Alabama game. Then again, Cade McNown and UCLA vs. Miami...ring a bell?
Do you have any Heisman love for McCoy? Despite the early struggles he has been the most accurate QB in the country this season - and his stats since OU are off the charts. Is it too little too late?
Beano Cook (4:40 PM)
Yes. Right now I don't know who I am going to vote for. If I had to send my ballot in today, I would pick Ingram. McCoy is in the hunt. I am rooting for McCoy to win it.
Beano! Kellen Moore does he get to NYC this year?
Beano Cook (4:40 PM)
I don't know. As I said earlier, the race is wide open. There is no dominant candidate.
Does the fact that the MWC doesn't have a TV deal with ESPN hurt TCU? Could it backfire if it comes down to them and Cincinnati for #2 in the polls?
Beano Cook (4:42 PM)
Number one, it helps to be on ESPN and anyone who thinks otherwise is naive. Look at the Pac-10 in basketball for a few years. I think TCU based on merits would beat out Cincinnati, but it is hard to believe Alabama, Florida and Texas, two of the three losing.
No dominant Heisman candidate? Really? Actually there is, and his name is C.J. Spiller. What the media can't stand is that it's not Tebow or McCoy so they complain about how there's no dominant candidate so they can justify voting for someone they are "rooting for" instead of someone that deserves it.
Beano Cook (4:44 PM)
Spiller is in the hunt and he did not hurt his cause against NC State. Has he stopped scoring yet?
Could Meyer get the players in ND if he left Florida?
Beano Cook (4:44 PM)
He would get the players, no question.
Will ND win a title in the next 5 years?
Beano Cook (4:46 PM)
I think Notre Dame should be in the hunt quite often. They have to do it in the next couple of years because in 2012 they have Oklahoma, Michigan and USC, plus Michigan State in there somewhere too. Next season is tailor made with just three real road games. Navy is listed as a road game--three admirals and an ensign root for the Middies while everyone else roots for the Irish. BC, Michigan State and USC are road games.
Thoughts on the Jackets. If they finish strong, will they have enough clout with the voters to make a run next year?
Beano Cook (4:48 PM)
Georgia Tech has really been overlooked. Excellent team, one of the top five coaches in America in Paul Johnson. This is a team that is still in the BCS bowl picture. That Georgia Tech-Clemson potential ACC title game would be pretty good.
Eric Berry, Safety(Tenn) 70 tackles, 2 Ints, 6 passes broken up, 8 passes defended.Mak Barron, Safety(Ala) 60 tackles, 6 Ints, 9 passes broken up, 15 passes defended.Which should be All- SEC?
Beano Cook (4:49 PM)
Berry will be first team All-America and should be a finalist for the Thorpe Award...end of discussion.
Alex (Houston, Tx)
Do you think our beloved HOUSTON Coogs will be a BCS buster next year?
Beano Cook (4:50 PM)
Let's make it through this season first. The loss to Central Florida was surprising.
Does the fact that Utah manhandled Bama last year, followed by Kyle Wittingham saying that this years TCU team is the best he has faced in his headcoaching career mean nothing? Why is the SEC given credit each year while conferences like the MWC have to continually earn it?
Beano Cook (4:51 PM)
You have your opinion and you are entitled to it.
Steve (Monterey, CA)
Toby Gerhart has been getting most of the for Stanford, and deservedly so (he's got my vote for heisman). But the best player, and best NFL prospect, on that team is Andrew Luck. He was 8-11 on third down last week. That was the real game changer. Your thoughts on Mr. Luck?
Beano Cook (4:52 PM)
Luck is certainly having a great season as is Gerhart. Which is the better pro prospect, that doesn't concern me...I leave that to Mel Kiper.
what will be the final score for Texas and Kansas? i feel like this will be more of a test for Texas then A&M.
Beano Cook (4:53 PM)
The A&M game is on the road, which is the only thing Texas has to worry about. Kansas seems deflated right now after a two-touchdown loss to Nebraska.
Steve (San Diego)
Do you think a quality, blue collar guy like Bo Pelini would be a good fit at ND? Would he ever leave Nebraska?
Beano Cook (4:54 PM)
Pellini is emotional, but I don't think he will be on the short list.
OSU vs. Michigan score this weekend . . . Does OSU go for two (see Woody Hayes in 1968 and Jim Harbaugh last week) on the final touchdown because he couldn't go for three?
Beano Cook (4:55 PM)
Yeah, that was great. I give Harbaugh credit, it takes a lot of guts because Stanford plays USC every year...unless he is planning to leave. I think he is the perfect coach in Palo Alto, so why go to the pros? How much money do you need?
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Bo wouldn't leave for Notre Dame anyway. He has no ties there. I'm more worried about when Tressel hangs em up.
Beano Cook (4:56 PM)
Maybe...Tressel will be coaching for a number of years.
Beano Cook (4:57 PM)
Time for the prediction. The Wildcats have not lost at home this season. Arizona 38, Oregon 33.
Beano Cook (4:58 PM)
See you next week...4 pm ET...
