Chat with Scott Van Pelt
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, ESPN Radio, and SportsCenter, host Scott Van Pelt will be stopping by to chat.
So, join the chat to ask Scott about anything you like, whether it's sports, radio, TV, his golf handicap, anything! It all begins at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday!
ESPN Radio (12:59 PM)
Started the computer up extra early this week just to be safe. Scott will be by in the next couple of minutes so keep the questions coming.
How did your mom like having her age broadcast over the air? Is that going to cost you a pie?
Scott Van Pelt (1:05 PM)
Funny that you ask. Mom called the minute the show ended laughing hysterically. The message was essentially the same line over and over: "I'm an old woman?" The truth is, if you saw my mom you would never in 100 years guess her age. She looks young, dresses young, acts young (but she's not out at happy hour trying to hit on dudes). She was not thrilled about all of the story. It was just funny.
Peezy, between Tiger, Henry's handball, and Federer struggling, are you done using Gillette products?
Scott Van Pelt (1:07 PM)
What is Federer struggling with? Finding shelf space for all of his trophies? It's a rough patch of road for my guy T. Woods.
Steve (Dallas, TX)
SVP, a non-Tiger golf question: Do you think Adam Scott will bounce back in 2010? 2009 was a disaster.
Scott Van Pelt (1:09 PM)
He had a bunch of issues away from the course that impact all of us at one time or another in terms of relationships. He's too good to be this bad for long. Having said that, he has never done anything in a major in terms of contention yet, and that's hard to believe given what we thought he was capable of.
7 Seconds (words): Who wins Alabama/Florida, and why?
Scott Van Pelt (1:10 PM)
Whoever wins the turnover battle wins the game. I like Alabama better but #15 plays for Florida. I'll take them.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
If you had to get a back-tattoo of a fellow ESPN personality, who would it be of? (And don't say 'Henna' Storm)
Scott Van Pelt (1:11 PM)
John Clayton. Shoulder blade to shoulder blade, lifesize Johnny good times. I may do this now.
Touch times here in DC, Scott. We don't have any winners, college or pro. Who is our best shot in the future? Caps?
Scott Van Pelt (1:12 PM)
Yes. Ovechkin needs to stop playing like the Tasmanian Devil, so says his coach. How fun would it be to hang out with that dude for a weekend? I hear stories. I'll leave it at that.
Adam (Portland, OR)
You excited for the Civil War 2nite? Any chance the Beavs pull the upset?
Scott Van Pelt (1:13 PM)
Ryen and I are going to talk about this game because we're fired up. The funny thing is last thing the table was set for your Beavers and Oregon went in and smashed them. So payback would be sweet, but I don't see it.
SVP, do you make the homies say HO! and the girlies wanna scream?
Scott Van Pelt (1:13 PM)
John (San Luis Obispo)
Do you think Texas is facing a trap game this week in the Big 12 Championship?
Scott Van Pelt (1:14 PM)
It's only a trap if you're not paying attention, and I think Nebraska's defense is good enough that Mack's boys will be paying attention.
KD and the Zombie Sonics -- any chance they finish above .500 this season, and would that make KD the MVP of the league ?
Scott Van Pelt (1:15 PM)
If you've watched SC, you've heard me say this guy is going to be an MVP every time I have his highlight. I don't think over .500 is enough to get him the award, but they're 10-8 and when I watch them, I like them. I have a feeling they fade under .500 as the season progresses, but they're trending in the right direction.
Scott, do you ever drink during commercial breaks?
Scott Van Pelt (1:17 PM)
Yes, Diet Coke. Ohhhhhh, you mean like my man Artest? All the time. Our best shows happen when we're blind on 'yac.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Who do the Nets beat for their first win? Any truth to the rumor that they are trying to get the Washington Generals admitted to the NBA?
Scott Van Pelt (1:18 PM)
We're going to talk about this today. They're honestly not this bad. I assume they beat the Bobcats in their next game, which coincidentally is their last win.
When did you feel like you had made it? The anchor desk at SC, radio job, the bobblehead?
Scott Van Pelt (1:19 PM)
That's a great question because SC (even though it sucks - I know because the internet says so) is SC. Having your name on a show is an interesting thing to deal with, but the fact that a team would make a bobblehead of my dumb@$$ and use it to promote a game was beyond explaining. I have a box of them if anyone wants some.
Any thoughts on the struggles of Greivis Vasquez this year? As he goes, so go the Terps.
Scott Van Pelt (1:21 PM)
I think Greivis needs to just relax and not try to prove before the first TV timeout that he's a first round pick. He'll be fine, so will the Terps.
Katelyn (Syracuse, NY)
You guys have some great commercials on ESPN. Is there something you'd like to see done for one in the future?
Scott Van Pelt (1:22 PM)
The ideas continue. The guys continue to come up with great ideas. It's amazing that it's still fresh. I just shot one yesterday and I'm in pain today because I was diving on the floor repeatedly. Look for the new spot with Landon Donovan sometime before the World Cup. I don't need to do anything like that again.
Does the restraining order on Russillo from the Oregon Cheerleaders even permit him to watch the game?
Scott Van Pelt (1:23 PM)
He's allowed to watch. I think his picture is up in the post office in Eugene now, though.
Megan (Iowa City, IA)
Heisman? Who you got?
Scott Van Pelt (1:24 PM)
I like Gerhart. Look at his year and compare it to the others. I feel like he's separated himself in the last month. He'll never win, but that's who I'd pick if I had a vote.
If you were to play pro sports, what sport would it be, what team, and what position?
Scott Van Pelt (1:26 PM)
Soccer, D.C. United, and middie. That's from Ryen. I would be a mop-up man for the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitch every fifth day, play a ton of golf, a go-to soundbyte for the media. Life would be good.
Russillo can wear babyGap polos, but SVP can't rock a party shirt once in a while? What gives?
Scott Van Pelt (1:27 PM)
SVP approves of this question.
Wilson (Tulsa, OK)
Who should be more disappointed with their season this year, The Irish or the Pats?
Scott Van Pelt (1:28 PM)
New England is still a playoff team, and as such could still matter this year in theory. Notre Dame is voting on whether to play a bowl game in Detroit, Boise or Mobile. I'm pretty sure it's not the Patriots.
Tom (Boston, MA)
Tiger's 2010: More likely to be a monster year or a disaster (for him anyways) year given recent events?
Scott Van Pelt (1:29 PM)
He didn't win a major in '09. I don't expect a repeat in 2010. Just because he's not going to win husband of the year in 2009 doesn't mean he can't be player of the year in 2010 (again).
I am hyped up for Mayweather vs. Pacman. And surprise, surprise, Mayweather already agreed to terms. C'mon Pacman, forget politics, make the fight. You excited Scott?
Scott Van Pelt (1:30 PM)
I will go. It's the fight of the last five years. Can't wait.
Adam (Washington DC)
ESPN has been giving soccer a lot more exposure this year, do you think this trend will continue?
Scott Van Pelt (1:30 PM)
Through the World Cup, absolutely. It's a big deal. We're going to treat it like that.
Matt (South Bend, IN)
Yes, a "non Notre Dame" question from South Bend: how much will the groove changes in golf clubs affect play at the PGA level next year? Will the ridiculous scores of -17, -20 winning tournaments be things of the past?
Scott Van Pelt (1:31 PM)
I played golf with Andy North in Hawaii and he changed his grooves, and he explained how it will impact players. It'll be more subtle than scores dramatically increasing, but certain shots will be much tougher to hit. So in a sense it will be harder.
ESPN Radio (1:32 PM)
The guys have to get ready for the show. Thanks for stopping by. We'll be back next week. Same time, same channel. Have a good one.
