Tom Luginbill (2:00 PM)
Welcome sports fans! We have a huge college football weekend ahead of us and recruiting will certainly start to heat up prior to the dead period as January approaches. Let's get to your questions...
who do you think deserves to be the #1 player on the espn top 150 board
Tom Luginbill (2:02 PM)
This is such a great question and I am not sure there aren't three to four legitimate contenders that have a beef. Since the 2006 class this has without a doubt been the toughest class when it comes to deciding on the top player.
Tom Luginbill (2:04 PM)
There isn't a dominate, can't miss QB and the defensive line class is extremely strong which is why we have Jeffcoat at the top. DE's do not grow on trees and are very hard to come by. We feel he is the most well-rounded player in the class at a position of critical need by all teams.
Where will Jordan Hicks and Sentrel Henderson end up?
Tom Luginbill (2:05 PM)
We feel for Hicks it will likely be Texas or Ohio State. Henderson we feel will be hard to pull away from Florida.
nate (south bend)
Is there a chance that chris martin comes back to notre dame?
Tom Luginbill (2:06 PM)
I really don't think so and in fact feel like the addition of Louis Nix leaves ND better off. The word is also that Martin really wants to play OLB and not DE which will limit his choices and while many coaches may tell him they will give him a shot at OLB, the reality is that he is a defenisve lineman.
Do you think with all the success that TCU has been having the past couple of years, including this years BCS bowl and Patterson staying for the long run that they will start to gain more attention from the top recruits?
Tom Luginbill (2:08 PM)
I believe tha no matter how much success TCU has the fact that they are not in a BCS conference will always be a challenge for them on top flight, high profile kids.
Tom Luginbill (2:09 PM)
The schedule in the minds of prospects does not always help either. What TCU does have going for them is they are one of the few non-BCS schools right smack dab in the middle of fertile recruiting ground which gives them a huge advantage in the Mountain West.
How does BYU's incoming class look? Any first year starters? Have they addressed the need for speed? Can they catch up to TCU?
Tom Luginbill (2:11 PM)
With 26 verbal commitments to date, BYU has done a great job and has more higher rated guys in this class than the pervious four had which is a reflection on their success on the field.
Tom Luginbill (2:12 PM)
Keep in mind that many of these kids may not see the field for a few years due to redshirting and LDS missions, but the developmental growth coupled with the talent level is excellent and has a high ceiling for productivity.
Why aren't there any recruits with a grade of 90 or better in the 2010 class? Is it just a down year? What's missing?
Tom Luginbill (2:16 PM)
Good question. It is one of those years where you could argue for a few guys maybe being in the 90's, but when you make that leap you need to be convinced because essentially you are stating that a guy will likley be an impact guy right off the bat and if you are not sure of that, don't put them in the 90's. Does that mean that there won't be guys playing as true freshman and being counted upon? Absolutley not, but better to be below 90 at times and have a guy prove us wrong on the right end of the spectrum by overacheiving.
Mark (Columbus, OH)
Oregon Ducks recruiting has expanded nationally over the past couple of years, will Chip continue that trend and do you think he will be successful in luring some impact atheletes in backfield and lines to Eugene?
Scouts Inc. (2:26 PM)
Some technical difficulties here. Tom will be back on shortly. Thanks.
Tom Luginbill (2:29 PM)
Okay, back on now. Got kicked off for a few minutes and I don't know why. Let's try this again.
How come Kyle Prater is rated so low according to you guys?
Tom Luginbill (2:31 PM)
We think Prater is a very good player, but he does not run great nore is he very sudden. He has great size and hands, but we worry about his ability to separate consistently against top tier cornerbacks at the next level. He'll win a ton of contested match-ups, but the problem is that he may be contested more often than not.
Baron (Large, PA)
Any thoughts on the QBs going to Pitt (Myers and Gonzales)? Thanks
Tom Luginbill (2:35 PM)
Gonzalez is not like the QB's Pitt has had in the past. He is a dual-threat with a Tebow-like style to his game. We like him both as a QB and athlete that could play another position. Myers is a guy that could be a late-bloomer, but may not be as physically gifted as Gonzalez.
Will Bowden's announcement help immediately with recruiting?
Tom Luginbill (2:37 PM)
Actually I think it will. Solidifying who is going to be in charge and who the coaches are going to be provides stability and Bowden will always be an ambassador to the program.
Maggie (Austin, Texas)
Has the commitment of Joshua Shaw to Florida factored on Lamarcus Joyner's view on the Gators and would the fact that Charlie Strong may be leaving have any effect on defensive recruits?
Tom Luginbill (2:40 PM)
Good question on both accounts. First, with Florida's corners being young and guys looking to possibly come out early, I don't think it will affect Joyner's decision. Depending on how much personal contact Strong has had with prospective defensive prospects it could be a factor only if he leaves, but for now I don't believe it will be.
How do you think Sims will work at Bama? What's his upside and downside?
Tom Luginbill (2:41 PM)
Downside: inconsistent footwork and lack of experience under center...Upside: good size, great physial tools and he really works to be good. Has also been very well coached at the HS level. Redshirting would be a huge for him.
What are the chances Texas gets Hicks, White, and Jeffcoat?
Tom Luginbill (2:43 PM)
Actually, I think they could be very good for all three which would could help them solidify a No. 1 class.
Jeffcoat is listed at 6' 5" 225 lbs. There are wide receivers as big as he is. Wouldn't it make more since to have him as a linebacker?
Tom Luginbill (2:44 PM)
He will be 260 or more in less than 15 months of being on campus.
Does Auburn's verbal from Michael Dyer hurt their chances at Lache Seastrunk (who was supposedly really high on Auburn) and Marcus Lattimore?
Tom Luginbill (2:46 PM)
To some degree yes, but realistically Auburn realizes that getting one is probably what they can hope for in the end and we feel they got the most complete package of the three.
Shawn (University Park, PA)
What do you think of Penn State's backfield recruiting this year? I think that Silas Redd, Paul Jones, and Zach Zwinak are underrated in your ratings. What say you on those prospects?
Tom Luginbill (2:48 PM)
Well Zwinak is a fullback and our No. 1 fullback at that. A fullbacks grade is only going to go so high with what he is asked to do. Redd we have as a 4-star and Jones quite honestly we feel is a project. We have seem him in games, on tape and in person working out and he has some tools, but is not college ready just yet.
Tom Luginbill (2:49 PM)
Well, time to jump off and do some radio. Hope you enjoy the weekend and we'll see you next week on the chatboard.
