Chris Low (1:01 PM)
So, did the BCS get it right?
Hey Chris, thanks for the chat. How much will TCU have to beat Boise by to earn a share of the AP title? Any chance at all of it happening?
Chris Low (1:04 PM)
I don't see much of a chance at all, not with Alabama and Texas both being unbeaten. Even if Texas wins another close one at the buzzer like the Nebraska game, the Horns are going to get credit from the AP pollsters for taking down Alabama. I honestly don't think how impressive TCU is in the bowl game will make much of a difference. The truth is that these arguments are going to persist in our current system to determine a national champion.
Blake (Foley, AL)
Last week you said that we, (Alabama), could be the preseason number one team. Looking at it, we are losing 8 people on defense and a few on O. Do you still think they would rank us number 1 after losing so many? Secondly, how do you see Auburn doing next year? Lastly, I never told you happy Thanksgiving on the post you made that day. Happy Thanksgiving!
Chris Low (1:07 PM)
Yes, I think Alabama will be a strong contender to be No. 1. Even though they lose a bunch of seniors on defense, look at the young talent on defense -- Dareus, Barron, Upshaw, Nico Johnson, Dre Kirkpatrick, Jerrell Harris and remember they get Hightower back.As for Auburn, a lot of how they do in the second season under Chizik boils down to finding the right quarterback and improving on defense.
What do you think of the bowls matching up the two non-AQ teams? I almost want to yell "conspiracy." I don't think the BCS wants another Utah-Bama, or Boise-OU situation that threatens the BCS system. It bothers me that the 2 non-AQ's are playing each other, although the game will be good, it will answer no questions as to their national strength. Agree? Disagree?
Chris Low (1:11 PM)
That was the Fiesta Bowl's choice. They wanted two unbeaten teams. To me, teams like Boise State and Utah have already proven they can beat the big boys. The bowl games are a one-time deal. But that doesn't necessarily mean that a Utah or Boise State would go through the SEC or Pac-10 11-1 or 12-0 most seasons. It's the grind of playing tough teams every week that's so difficult in those conferences.
RAY GORDON REID ( BIRMINGHAM ALA 352O3)
QUESTION TO CHRIS LOW AT 1.20PM HI CHRIS HOW CAN STOP COLTMCCOY
Chris Low (1:12 PM)
Well, considering that Nebraska stopped him pretty good, I'd say Alabama has a good chance, too. Alabama's defense is better than Nebraska's.
How do you see the NC game playing out?
Chris Low (1:15 PM)
With the way Alabama played against Florida, it's hard for me not to see the Crimson Tide going on winning this game, maybe handily. I know coach Saban doesn't want to hear that. But when he's got this long to prepare and his his team focused the way this one is (and with an offense that's playing its best football of the season), I like the Tide big.
Brandon (Athens GA)
Chris any word on who is the front runner for the D-Coordinator at UGA? I'm hoping Kriby Smart is coming to town.
Chris Low (1:16 PM)
I think Kirby is certainly at the top of Georgia's list and the Bulldogs are prepared to pay some serious money. I don't know, though, that they will be able to get him away from Alabama.
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
As a Bama fan, I want Ingram to win the Heisman, but I've watched Suh in a few games and I can't deny that he is the most dominant player I have seen all year. I'm sure he won't end up winning, but Suh is outstanding and he deserves it. Who do you think will win it in the end?
Chris Low (1:18 PM)
I voted Ingram No. 1, Suh No. 2 and Toby Gerhart No. 3. I just didn't think McCoy played his best football against the best defenses he faced this year. Even so, I'd say he's still probably the favorite to win it.
What happened to my Gators? I have to give props to Alabama because this was one of the best played and cleanest games I've seen. it would have been much more difficult to swallow otherwise
Chris Low (1:19 PM)
A better question: What happened to the Florida defense? I thought Alabama would win. I didn't think the Tide would manhandle the Gators' defense like that. Even some of the Florida players admitted that Bama seemed like the hungrier football team, and it showed.
Lawrence (La Crescenta, CA)
Do you think Florida would have beaten or routed Alabama in the 2009 SEC Championship Game if they had John Brown, Torrey Davis, Andre Debose, Carlos Dunlap, and Carl Moore?
Chris Low (1:21 PM)
No. With the way Alabama played last Saturday, I don't think Florida would have won even if the Gators still had Percy Harvin. The Crimson Tide were so much more physical and played textbook football -- one penalty, one sack allowed and no turnovers.
Will (Metairie, LA)
Chris, could you breakdown the LSU/Penn State matchup in the Capital One Bowl. The Tigers have better skill players, but the Lions have solid team all around also.
Chris Low (1:25 PM)
Penn State always seems to be a pretty tough out in these bowl games. LSU's defense has been solid most of the season. The Tigers just haven't shown enough production on offense to ever make you feel real good going into a game against a quality opponent. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson didn't progress the way I thought he would this season, and it's simoly hard to win every game 17-13 or 20-17.
Will Muschamp has been in the NC before...with Nick Saban at LSU. He was with Saban at Miami. He was at Auburn. He (preceeded by Gene Chizick) has brought SEC defense to Austin. What does this bring to the table heading into the game against Bama?
Chris Low (1:26 PM)
Coaches always say those kind of things are overrated, but there's no doubt that Muschamp knows Saban as well as anybody, knows his tendencies, etc. Major Applewhite was also on the Alabama staff in 2007.
Can you explain how teams compose their out of conference schedule? I feel like Boise St, TCU and Cincy should be scheduling better games, but how much control do they really have in terms of getting multiple big programs to play them during the regular season?
Chris Low (1:31 PM)
TCU won at Clemson this year. Cincinnati won at Oregon State, and Boise State beat Oregon. All three are impressive wins by anybody's standards.
How much will the loss of Wilson & Gran hurt UT's recruiting class this year?
Chris Low (1:33 PM)
It certainly won't help. The loss of Gran really hurts because he had been so successful in the state of Florida, an area Lane Kiffin wants to continue hitting hard.
Percy Harvin (Minneapolis, MN)
Are you kidding me?!?!?!? Why do you have to disrespect me like that?!?!?!? The Gators would have routed the Crimson Tide if Carlos and I played in the game!!!!!!! No doubt!!!!!!! They got pass-happy because Carlos was gone and what makes you think they can contain me if some NFL teams can't contain. Don't be ridiculous, Chris!!!!!!!
Chris Low (1:35 PM)
Hey, Percy, what's that old saying about ifs and buts? Simply, Alabama wasn't going to lose last Saturday. The Tide played a near perfect game and could have possibly had 40 there at the end before shutting it down.
JBKYGA (Cumming, GA)
Not a bowl question but could you give any insight on who you think Louisville should hire and will hire as the new football coach? Thank you very much.
Chris Low (1:36 PM)
I think it's going to be Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. I think something could go down this week. Strong has been an excellent coach everywhere he's been. He's a great guy and relates so well to the players.
Jared (St. George, UT)
I am so sick of hearing about teams like Utah not being able to compete in "power conferences." We will never know, unless this BCS garbage goes away. Can you tell me Chris if S. Florida, Louisville, Rutgers, Baylor, Vanderbilt, UCONN, etc, all have much more solid programs like BYU and Utah, and that they deserve their spots, or that the "new" Big East is really SOOOO dominant!
Chris Low (1:38 PM)
I've got news for you. This BCS "garbage" isn't going away anytime soon. And I definitely think that some of the top non-BCS teams could hold their own in some of the conferences. I just don't think you're going to see them go through 10-2, 11-1 and 12-0 on a routine basis.
With so many seniors and key juniors leaving the Gators next year, plus a new quaterback in Brantley, how do you see the Gators stacking up in the SEC East? Do they get back to Atlanta next year?
Chris Low (1:41 PM)
I would still have the Gators No. 1 in the East, in part, because I think Brantley will have a big year throwing the ball. He needs some of those receivers to step up, but Debose will be back from his injury. I'd say a lot of the juniors will leave for the NFL -- Haden, Dunlap, Hernandez and maybe Maurkice Pouncey. We'll find out how well the Gators have recruited the last couple of years. There's still a lot of talent in that program, and Meyer is one of the best coaches in the country.
It is pretty disgusting that the BCS won't allow for these small schools who are undefeated to take on the big teams. When do you think that a system will be in place that will clear up all of this mess that continues to happen year after year?
Chris Low (1:43 PM)
Again, the Fiesta Bowl wanted the battle of the unbeaten teams. But, yes, it would have been a lot of fun to see a Boise State take on Florida or a TCU take on Georgia Tech.
Alan (Tampa FL)
Enough of the B(c)S for now. Im a huge Tennessee fan, always have been and always will. So what do you think of the job Lane Kiffin is doing, and when do you see the Big Orange back in the BCS?
Chris Low (1:46 PM)
I'd give Kiffin a B-/C+ so far. Looks like he's recruiting very well. A lot of the players improved. The Vols didn't have very many quality wins this year, though, and lost two games at home (UCLA and Auburn) they should have won. The third year is key for Kiffin. He needs to either have the Vols in Atlanta playing for the SEC title or at least knocking on the door.
Chris- What your thoughts on Les Miles putting Cincy 8th? Clearly something needs to be done when Les Miles is allowed to vote like that.
Chris Low (1:48 PM)
Listen, as long as we have this system with media dnd coaches voting in the human polls, we're going to have controversy. I don't understand how you could put the Bearcats that low, but the subjectivity of the process makes it imperfect.
Chris,With Urban potentially losing Strong to Louisville and not playing for a National Title. Does he entertain an offer from Notre Dame now?
Chris Low (1:49 PM)
No, I don't see any scenario that Urban Meyer leaves Florida for Notre Dame.
Which Bama coach is gonna be the new FSU d-coordinator, Kirby or Sal?
Chris Low (1:50 PM)
I would say Sal is much more likely.
This just shows how badly college football needs a playoff system. with that many unbeaten teams is there really a true national champion this year? i dont think so, not inless they have a playoff
Chris Low (1:54 PM)
There's never really been a "true" national champion in college football. Before the advent of the BCS, the final wire service polls determined the national champion.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Which SEC teams do you see on the upswing for 2010 and which do you see on a potential drop off?
Chris Low (1:57 PM)
On the way up, I'd put South Carolina, Mississippi State and Arkansas in that category. I think Tennessee's schedule will keep the Vols from winning a lot more games next year than they did this year.Ole Miss loses a lot of key seniors and could be on its way down. It will be interesting to see how Georgia responds.
When do the power rankings come out? And where did you put Florida?
Chris Low (1:58 PM)
I had Florida fifth this week behind Alabama, Texas, TCU and Cincinnati.
People really love Joe Haden. But I see Patrick Peterson of LSU ending up better than him. What do you think of Peterson?
Chris Low (2:01 PM)
I thought Peterson was the most complete cornerback in the SEC this season. He can cover, tackle and is big enough and physical enough to take on anybody.
Is the Big 12 now a better conf. than the SEC? I think so!!
Chris Low (2:02 PM)
I'd say we'll get a few answers on Jan. 7 in Pasadena.
Chris Low (2:03 PM)
Thanks for the questions. I know everybody's frustrated by the BCS. But you might as well get used to it. I don't see a playoff anytime in the near future. I guess it makes too much sense.
