bruce (2:43 PM)
Sorry I'm late.. On someone else's PC and struggled to get online. Thanks for stopping by.
Bruce, TCU returns 18 starters, Boise returns 21 of 22 starters. We all know that voters will not put either of them in the preseason top 5 or 10 for that matter. Yet if Texas, Bama, UF etc. boasted the same they would be #1. Due to this fact how can almost everyone at ESPN defend the Fiesta Bowl saying they made the matchup out of respect and that is #3 vs. #6 not non bcs vs non bcs?
bruce (2:46 PM)
Personally, I would've preferred to see either face a Florida. Heck, I'd rather see TCU play Penn State or USC because I think it's too easy for skeptics to dismiss either non-BCS team's win in the Fiesta as saying they didn't beat a true elite team... even if these aren't great Penn State or USC teams, at least it's a brand name of sorts.. And in that case, there'd be some springboard effect for 2010 bc as you say both, especially Boise come back loaded.
Jason (New Prague, MN)
Bruce, Care to give your Heisman picks? Thanks.
bruce (2:49 PM)
Sure.. #1: Suh; #2 Ingram; 3 McCoy.. I explained my ballot in the blog yesterday.
David (Chicago, IL)
Is this the year OSU final gets back to winning bowl games?
bruce (2:49 PM)
I don't think so. I feel like Oregon will be too explosive for them.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
JoePa should get to 400 wins next year. Is there anyway to put that in the proper perspective?
bruce (2:51 PM)
No, there really isnt although I read that profile on him a few weeks back about all of the historical figures he's older than.. it was jaw-dropping stuff.. "Betsy Ross didn't know how to sew when JoePa was playing DB at Brown..."The guy is a real treasure. Am glad he's still around and it's good that PSU staff has been set up well to keep things together right.
Bruce, Crystal Ball questions, what next years Heisman finalist list look like.
bruce (2:53 PM)
ugh..I got a long list of candidates depending on who stays in college.. Keenum, Ingram, K. Moore, Ponder, Dion Lewis, Quizz, Dwyer/Nesbitt, Jacory Harris and the Oregon duo.
Bruce, on Heisman talk b/w Ingram and Gerhart everyone is looking at just the numbers. Well Ingram played against 5 top 25 defenses....Gerhart...only 2. Gerhart's toughest team was a #12 defense and Ingram's was a #4, if you look at those game Ingram did better. Why isn't how tough your opponent is a consideration?
bruce (2:54 PM)
I think it will be for a lot of voters.. Then again Stanford folk could say at least Gerhart is the best player on his team whereas Rolando McClain might be that guy for Bama... lots of gray area with this stuff.
Mike (NE Ohio)
Bruce, your thoughts on Cameron Heyward? Does he return to OSU next season? If so, is OSU a top-5 team?
bruce (2:55 PM)
Great player...Lots of stud from 7 talent in this draft.. might be best for him to come back for one more year.
Thoughts on Kevin Sumlin as a head coach??? I feel he could be a very good one.
bruce (2:56 PM)
I think he already is a good one. Players like him. Other coaches really respect him and he's put together a good staff. He is a rising star. Big fan.
Richard (Greensboro, NC)
No Ryan Williams for Heisman next year? What will it take?
bruce (2:57 PM)
I thought about him but what aboue Darren Evans?
Mike W (Chicago)
Fill in the blank: Brian Kelly will be the coach of ________ next week.
bruce (3:00 PM)
My hunch is ND. I honestly haven't talked to people plugged into him..so it's a hunch. The only thing I've reported on ND was from someone I really trust who said the Edsall talk was really overblown and there had been no talk with ND and him... I don't doubt that Edsall would be intrigued by ND but apparently ND isn't focused on him. I think Kelly makes a lot of sense, but we'll see.
The next coach at Kansas is?
bruce (3:01 PM)
Not sure.. Turner Gill or Skip Holtz?
Any chance we get a surprise ND coach or is it definitely going to be Kelly or Edsall?
bruce (3:01 PM)
Sure, always that chance.
Continuing on with Kevin Sumlin, when do you think he will be able to make a leap to a big time program? Maybe Minnesota if things don't turn around there soon (the ties are there...used to be an asst)?????
bruce (3:02 PM)
That could be an option especially since the way that place has upgraded its facilities.
What does LSU need to do to be in the title hunt next year?
bruce (3:03 PM)
Stay healthy and run the football a lot better. They have plenty of athletes.
Patrick Peterson, Javier Arenas, Joe Haden. Who do you like best?
bruce (3:04 PM)
Tough call.. I like all three.. five years from now I feel like PatPete might be the best of the bunch.
Kelli's defense stats are misleading. Ingram may have faced teams with better overall defenses, but Gerhart faced teams with much better rush defenses according to NCAA stats.
Mike (Fairfax, VA)
Hey Bruce love the blog... We know that FSU will have a good offense next year, but with signing of 2 solid defensive recruits, do you see this team being a major player in the ACC and maybe the nation?
bruce (3:05 PM)
I dont think FSU is that far away.. staff chemistry and leadership have been the big culprit. Am curious to see who Jimbo hires to be his new DC. I loved the Eddie Gran hire, now build on it.
Preseason top 5 ?
bruce (3:07 PM)
Hard to say depending on which juniors leave... Bama, Boise, Oregon, VT?, maybe UF, maybe Miami, maybe TCU.
If Jake Locker comes out where do you see him being drafted? Do you think he should stay another year?
bruce (3:10 PM)
Top 15.. He's got a strong arm, terrific athleticm, and great character.. Pete Carroll told me he's the best pro QB prospect he's faced in all his time in college.Having said that, he still hasn't played that much college football so would more time help him develop in Sarkisian's system? Yeah, probably so.
explain to me how spiller doesnt even get invited to the heisman ceremony? this man is an athlete. best in the country in my opinion. your thoughts??
bruce (3:11 PM)
I think he's the guy who get omitted because Tim Tebow is going but I think that supposedly reflects the voting pull. Would've loved to have seen them send six.
No love for Ohio State in the top 5? The bring back almost entire offense and most of the defense.
bruce (3:12 PM)
I'm not sold yet on the offense and want to see how Pryor does in this bowl game.. top 10 probably.. top five? Not so sure.
Zach (San Diego)
Why would Sumlin go to Minnesota? He can recruit better athletes at UH. I think too many coaches make the mistake of leaving recruiting rich mid level schools to go to bottom level BCS schools.
bruce (3:13 PM)
Facilities are better and there is the natural BCS tie-in although can you win 10 every year at Minny? Maybe not. Sumlin might be better served to wait and see what happens at A&M.
Back to Bob in CA, I think you aren't reading the numbers right either if you are just looking at rushing defenses. That being said if you look at what the rush defense was ranked at the time of the game then your argument holds no merit.
Is this movie about Miami on ESPN Saturday night basically an on-screen adaptation of Cane Mutiny?
bruce (3:17 PM)
I think so, although I honestly won't know for sure till I see it. About 18 months ago I was invited to Bristol to sit down with the producers of it and some execs to talk about the project, and the scope was what I set out to explore in my book about how the local climate of that time down there spurred what became UM football, which had been pretty much on its deathbed. And, of course, what bubbled over from that program was a lot of colorful stuff. The documentary makers are Miami guys and big fans of the book so it was/is flattering. I tried to help set them up with interview subjects and I hear they did a great job.
so who do you want to see the heisman??
bruce (3:18 PM)
I voted Suh #1 and I would love to see a DL win it, but all of those guys are deserving and great reps for the sport.
Kiper's got Clausen going in the top 5. McShay said on Sportscenter today that he's not even a first round pick. Where do you have him going? Aren't there way too many teams looking for a QB for him to slip that far?
bruce (3:19 PM)
I saw that segment and thought it was entertaining. I like Clausen and expect he'll be a top 15 pick. He's tough and he's accurate. Can't fault him for the shaky D and playing behind some bad O-lines. Gotta give it to him: he was no bust.
tebow a good pro ?
bruce (3:21 PM)
Can't wait to find out. Talked to one of my colleagues who is a former QB who thinks Tebow's arm isn't ideal (too long of a delivery) but you never know.
if notre dame gets kelly what will there season be like next year?
bruce (3:22 PM)
Probably around 7-5ish.. I really like Mike Floyd and Kyle Rudolph at TW but they lost at least 3 OL. You have a very promising young QB who I think can be a star but he's coming off a major surgery and the D is average at best.
BRUCE.. Alabama blocks 2 kick against tenn and scores late and they are great, and show alot of poise, Texas kicks a last second fg to win big 12 and we are the worse team ever what gives
bruce (3:24 PM)
I don't know.. but I'm not touting any BCS game blowout. I think it'll be a great match up. Colt McCoy and that offense will be prepared and UT's D is good. They ran into a smoking hot QB in Jerrod Johnson with some firepower that night.
Looking at defenses only at the time they played doesn't give a fair assessment of the true quality of the defense. So if you play a team at the beginning of the season when it's only played terrible non-conference teams, and so their defensive stats are great, you look great when you run over them? No. Also, see http://espn.go.com/blog/pac10/post/_/id/6119/myth-vs-reality-defense-in-the-pac-10
bruce (3:24 PM)
Anything to link a story of my pal, Ted Miller, the Atlanta-born Pac-10 blogger.
Bruce, what do you think about Sumlin as a possible replacement for BK at Cincy if he bolts for ND?
bruce (3:26 PM)
I wondered if Fulmer could get that job and would they take him? I doubt Tuberville would pursue it but I think Fulmer has less leverage because of his age and the way things finished at UT.
chuck (north carolina)
Pat Forde did a good article on new minority hirings today-who has the quickest results and why?
bruce (3:27 PM)
Pat did a great job turning that story around... I'll say Charlie Strong although UVA has some potential and needed some new energy there.
Will Golden Tate win the Biletnikoff?
bruce (3:27 PM)
He got my vote so I think so.
DCDuck (Bethesda, MD)
Kelli in Denver must realize the quality of offenses in the Pac vs. SEC. Gerhart had better numbers than Ingram against tougher overall competition (see SOS and 5 Pac teams in final BCS). No comparison. But I still would vote for Suh. Haven't seen a player like him in forever.
Georgia Tech has only 6 scholarship seniors on the roster, and have officially overtaken VT in the ACC. You don't see Georgia Tech as pre-season Top 5 if coming off a big Orange Bowl win?
bruce (3:29 PM)
Depends.. they have a crew of bigtime juniors that could leave.. Does Derrick Morgan go? what about Dwyer and Bebe Thomas or Burnett? Keep them all and they're dangerous. Lose three of the four and I think they slide back.
bruce (3:30 PM)
three more questions...
Does the MWC deserve a automatic bid, each year
bruce (3:30 PM)
Yes.. They have three very good programs.
what will happen to the gators without tebow?
bruce (3:31 PM)
They may stepback a little but Meyer's recruiting so well, they should remain top 10/15. the challenge now is what old Miami amd old FSU and to some extent USC had to deal with when you're getting a lot of three-and-outs of elite players.
What do you think about Boise States WRs Pettis and Young?
bruce (3:33 PM)
Aside from Tate-Floyd, I'm not sure there's a more dangerous duo... Big credit to Boise staff finding Pettis. He was a prep teammate of Aaron Corp and was slowed by a leg injury for much of his career so no one knew how good he was.. He was like 4.95 guy or something but look at all the plays he makes now.
bruce (3:34 PM)
Thanks for all of the questions.. If I didn't get to yours send it to me via my blog on ESPN Insider or via Twitter at BFeldmanESPN.
