Jesse Rogers (2:01 PM)
Hi all. Good to be back chatting after missing last week cause I was at O'hare all day trying to get to Det. Eddie O. is with me for a while to answer some questions so we'll start with some for him and keep going after he is done. So fire away!
Patrick (Rock City, MN)
Eddie OWith the 5 ring circus starting in Vancouver soon. can you take us back and tell us what it was like for you as a young boy being named to the squad?Congrats to Keith, Seeb and Capt Serious.
Jesse Rogers (2:03 PM)
For me, following in the footsteps of the 80's team was huge. Everyone knew who we were. I was 17 playing in the Olympics and it was an unbelievable experience which helped me prepare for the next step which was playing for the Hawks.
Jesse Rogers (2:04 PM)
A lot of Huet questions after last night..I'll sum them up for Eddie. Are u worried about him sliding the other way again and where do we stand overall with our goaltending.
Jesse Rogers (2:06 PM)
You are always going to have rough patches from individuals or even teams over the course of the season. Early in the year he struggled but then he was as good as anyone for the next little while. Lately, its been back and forth a little. Im a big believer in history and guys numbers. Huet is somewhere in between where he had been when he was going good and early in the season when he was finding his game. U want consistency, he's still finding it. Still, he and Antti are a big reason why the Hawks are where they are in team defense.
Marty Lukowski (Northbrook, IL)
After last nights perfrormance from Huet, will he start on Thurdsay?
Jesse Rogers (2:09 PM)
Tough one. Knowing its a busy schedule..I think Joel is handled the situation extremely well..I think there is a good chance Niemi is in goal tomorrow night and then wait and see how the weekend plays out..could go either way..but i think it will be niemi
M Konz (J Town)
As a novice hockey fan, what is Torchetti's role on the staff?
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
He handles the power play and deals with the forwards during the game...in practice he'll run diff drills and deal with the players on various situations and things like that. just like any asst.
John S (Chicago)
Jesse and Eddie, I still think the Hawks need a better power play and defense if they're going to win the cup. The guy who is available who fills this void is Ilyia Kovalchuk. What do you guys think of this trade: Kovy and a draft pick to the Hawks for Versteeg, Buff and Barker. Rationale: Kovy's contract expires this summer meaning no future money committed. Next season, those three Hawks will make a combined $10 million. Thus, Hawks save cap space and get a prolific scorer. Also, Kovy steps in for Barker on the point on the PP, Hendry pairs w/ Sopel, and Bickell gets called up to replace Buff. On the flip side, Atlanta gets NHL-ready talent to fill its many holes.
Jesse Rogers (2:15 PM)
I'm clapping at the specific nature of that deal...Anything that would make this team and get cap relief is possible. On the surface it would make a lot of sense but there's a lot that goes into it..Take names and money out of it..what do we need and how do we go about getting it..and then we can worry about next year...any move, whatever it is, it has to make this team better now and put you over the top...it's a hard call cause you lose your depth..but obviously Kovy is a great player
Jesse Rogers (2:16 PM)
Also, if you're atl. and you dont have a contract extension for him by the time olympics come, you have to trade him so he may be out there..I see boston as the destination for Kovy..more than likely
Steve (the Park)
Eddie, First of all..appreciate your add in advice to the telecasts about "for all you young hockey players out there." As a father of a young 4 year old hockey player I appreciate it as much as the more skilled young players. gives me tips that I can share to my son. So well done...My question is this..even the best of the goaltenders go through tough stretches..so why do you think everyone is so quick to lynch Huet. Is it because of the great problem we have in having a good back up?
Jesse Rogers (2:18 PM)
First, thanks for the kind words, I think a lot of the question marks are due to the past history of a goaltender that has never won a round in the playoffs and is really the legit number 1 goaltender for the first time in his career...its probably why he doesnt have a lot of built in defenders..but we've seen teams win with just good goaltenders...i picked them to go to the finals with just above avg goaltending...if they get that, meaning no soft goals, then he and they will be fine
Eddie, love having you and Pat in the booth, you guys are great together and always provide for an entertaining and knowledgeable broadcast. Having said that, if the offer came around would you ever consider taking another coaching job?
Jesse Rogers (2:20 PM)
Im laughing a bit. I get that all the time. I would never say never but working for the Hawks and the other gigs I have, I would defnitely have to get permission from my wife and daughter first. I do miss it but Im very fulfilled with what Im doing right now.
Eddie, which Hawk player do you watch on the ice and think, man I wish I had his ability to do _______when I played.
Jesse Rogers (2:21 PM)
I wish I could skate like Duncan. I felt like I had good hands and good anticipation but if I had those wheels...and contract!
Eddie all of a sudden it seems like our D has been very sloppy in our own end. In the last 3 games or so it seems like we are turning the puck over more and giving the other team prime chances. Have you noticed anything breakout wise that seems different or is just a rough patch?
Jesse Rogers (2:23 PM)
Very good question..probably a combination of just a little fatigue...and teams are not going to just sit back and let those d-men breakout...they will see mroe pressure now that teams know what the hawks are all about...little less time and space to make the better decisions
Eddie, the other night you mentioned that you thought Patrick Kane is one of the top 5 passers (forwards) in NHL. I completely agree, who do you put in that list of five with Kaner in terms of vision, hands, playmaking ability, etc?
Jesse Rogers (2:24 PM)
Crosby, Thorton, Backstrom, Datsuk
Alex (Highland Park)
With five players already named to olympic teams and at least one more (Kane) to be named, is it going to hurt the Hawks at the end of the year to have this many players in the olympics? The rest of the league is getting a two week rest while it seems most of the Hawks team is going to be playin' hard.
Jesse Rogers (2:27 PM)
This is where depth plays a part. The other stars in the league will be playing too so it evens out..It will affect some teams harder than others...thats why having a cushion is a good thing in case of a rough stretch in march or whatever..if i was coaching i would be worried about one of my guys goes down in the olympics and then have to replace him..but everybody (except maybe calgary!) is in the same boat
Eddie I was listening to the broadcast last night on Versus and they said that you don't really know your team until you look at games 40-60, as we're about to get into this stretch, how do you see the Hawks faring with teams pushing us and Detroit having guys come back from injury as we're making this playoff push?
Jesse Rogers (2:29 PM)
Its interesting. Sometimes you dont have a feel until you get guys back from injury..I think the Hawks know exactly what they have and what they would like...We've seen enough
SteveFitz (Cicero, IL)
Eddie, do you get goosebumps like the rest of us during the pregame anthem every home game?
Jesse Rogers (2:30 PM)
Always, and for me it takes me back to being out there at the Old Stadium and Wayne Messmer and all that..as well as taking me back to a kid and being a fan..so on a lot of levels, the answer is yes
Jesse Rogers (2:31 PM)
One more than I have to go to the Winter Classic..off to Boston where Im hoping I dont need an umbrella
Guys... One Big Question... Make a Trade to try and improve, or stay the course with the current roster?
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
From where I sit, the chemistry is great and that's important. They know what their needs are but what would they have to give up to get that. Having said that, I would be surprised if they stood pat...Its tough with little flexibility i money but they do have assests...and depth and draft picks..it would definitely be a rent a player...whaever that need is you are going to do whatever it takes to fill that hole..not sure which way they will go but again I dont see them standing pat
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
Happy New Year to all. Thanks for all your support and go Hawks!
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
Ok, we will continue..tons of questions...we'll go for a while cause who doesnt love talking hawks!
K Rock and Bruce (Devinstone Dr, Ft Worth)
We were at the game last night here in the Big D. Do you foresee Niemi getting upwards of 60% of the starts anytime soon with Huet's penchant for letting the easy ones in and do you find Brendan Morrow as handsome as we do?
Jesse Rogers (2:37 PM)
I dont see a lot changing unless there is a BIG stretch of games where he is bad...I mean hes been pretty good for 2 months..plenty of goalies have bad games...i dont see a major change right now
Josh Martin (Freeport, IL)
Jesse I think Hammer has played himself into being part of the core of this team to build around. If he were to get to the open market this summer as an RFA what kind of offers could we be looking at having to match if it got that far? I was hoping to sign him to a cap friendly deal but his play this year might be making him a target for many teams this offseason.
Jesse Rogers (2:39 PM)
I still think he can sign a relatively cap friendly deal. I mean he didnt make the olympics and he's a number 3 or 4 guy back there. RFA's like that dont get huge offers..I think the hawks can have him for 2-3 mil...maybe Im off but thats what i think
Josh Martin (Freeport, IL)
I have really been impressed with Troy Brouwer thus far in the year. Everyone knew he had the ability but he just couldn't quite find his scoring touch in the NHL. Well he seems to have found his role and really makes the Kane & Toews line really click. With his emergance as the guy we all thought Buff could develop in to does this make Buff expendable and a huge trade token during the offseason to try and clear some cap space and restock the minors?
Jesse Rogers (2:40 PM)
Its a good question but it doesnt hurt to have buff AND brouwer going well..the hawks have been notoriously small and both these guys make them "bigger". u are right though..if he emerges as THE power forward on the team, it absolutely makes buff, lets just say, more expendable
Mark (Burr ridge)
With the team playing so well, what type of player would you target for a cup run. What would be that one missing piece.
Jesse Rogers (2:42 PM)
The type of player I would target is a rugged D man. As eddie said you'll need some depth, especially with seabs and keith in the olympics...that 5 and 6 for the hawks is a bit scary...the good news is you're not nervous when soupy and hammer are out there..thats the story of the season for my money..that pairing has been very, very good..
When does the olympic break begin and will that time help Hossa to regain the form he is slightly missing?
Jesse Rogers (2:43 PM)
I really do. High level competition leading to the stretch run should up his game..only thing missing, like last night, is scoring touch but I still think 70% of him is better than most!
CM (Tinley Park)
When can we expect to see a trade to reduce our salary cap number. and who can we expect to see leave and enter Chicago? Is there any new word about dealing Sopel to Toronto?
Jesse Rogers (2:44 PM)
Cant answer that completely. Its not a known thing. If they can do it in-season to BETTER the club and reduce the cap they will...if the right deal doesnt come along, it will happen in the off-season..nothing new on sopel
Steve Grant (Northbrook)
Hi Jesse, While Brent Sopel has played somewhat better lately. I continue to ask myself why he is on the ice for almost every penalty kill. Aside from getting walked around last night for the game winning goal I think Sopel overall is a liability on this team. A trade needs to be made or possibly someone from Rockford needs to be brought up. Also, is there any chance the Hawks could trade Kopecky? He has been horrible since coming over here, and I think Bickell is twice the player he is. Let me know what you think.
Jesse Rogers (2:47 PM)
Good points. Im starting to think Hendry might be a better answer..maybe they rotate a little. or swicth off in back to backs. Sopel has had some good moments on the penalty kill but its like playing him cause you have nothing better. maybe with campbell's improved play you might give him a shot on the PK. in theory he should be out there...i doubt you can move kopecky unless its part of a bigger deal..with draft picks or something..point is, who is clamoring for him? i do like bickell as well.
Dave L. (Chicago)
Despite playing well last night the power play is still struggling. What changes should be made? (2 defensemen on the point hopefully)
Jesse Rogers (2:50 PM)
Great question. They've tried everyone but Eddie O. on the point. Buff has been ok there. Probably the best of the forwards. Hated bolland and sharp there...I have no prob with Seabs and keith, and campbell and barker being the D-men back there..i just think they need to work harder...move their feet, take advantage of their quickness, etc. easier said than done but something is missing...its getting better the more and more kane enters the zone with the puck
Dave L. (Chicago)
What effects (both good and bad) will the olympics have on the hawks?
Jesse Rogers (2:53 PM)
The only question (besides health) is will seabs and keith be worn down come may or even june? I just done know...i mean if they are worn down so will 35 year old pronger..but we dont care about that. i guess the bad news is calgary will have a totally rested D so it is a question..would be just our luck if we get screwed cause our d-men are good enough to make the olympics. its legit to wonder.and when i talk to thsoe guys i will ask how they plan on staying fres, if its possible
Ted Klein (Villa Park, IL)
Hey Jesse and Eddie, with the Winter Olympics around the corner, how worried should fans and the team be with possiblites of injuries and/or losing momentum because of the layoff?
Jesse Rogers (2:54 PM)
Not too worried about momentum. Again, every team in the same boat..by the team april rolls around..should be fine. plus more time for bolland and burish to get healthy..of course u worry about injuries. but what can u do.
Lee (NY, NY)
Are the Blackhawks planning to lock up Seabrook any soon? Do they have cap room to do it?
Jesse Rogers (2:55 PM)
He has another year...I would not expect anything till sometime next year or even after that seaosn is over..their cap space will change between now and then so who knows what it will look like
What's the likelihood our Team Canada boys end up rooming together in the Olympic Village?
Jesse Rogers (2:56 PM)
Not sure. for team chemistry they might mix and match
I know it's not going to happen for a while still...but how do you envision the lines looking when Bolland and Burish return...assuming no other moves and/or injuries?
Jesse Rogers (2:59 PM)
Get asked this a lot. Bolland will center Hossa almost for sure.. prob sharp on other wing. ..i think the top line stays the same...then its madden, ladd, and buff...burish..with whoever is playing well at time between kopecky, eager, and fraser..that leaves steeg..could be anywhere...if everyone is healthy will be surprised so lets see but thats how i feel
Russell Knoebel (Woodridge, IL)
Considering the skill of Niemi, should the hawks look into working with Niemi as a full time goaltender, and should the hawks look into a trade deal for Huet, before the cutoff, perhaps to free-up space for the salery cap for when Burrish and Bolland come back?
Jesse Rogers (3:01 PM)
Still getting tons of goalie questions...i would advocate doing exactly what q has been doing..no one can tell me if Niemi is number 1 he keeps it up and they are near the top with the way it has been..BUT if you can move Huet i would def look into that..since neither goalie has a record in the playoffs, whats the difference...if you can open cap space and still be a contender..why not..but lets not put niemi in the hall of fame just yet..he did just give up 4 himself on sunday
I have always seen Kris Versteeg as the "X-Factor" on the 'Hawks. How important, do you believe, his role on the squad is, and how good do you think he can become?
Jesse Rogers (3:04 PM)
He is a little bit of an ex-factor..him and buff in a way..cause they can play anywehre from top line minutes to 4th line depending on how things are going..i like steeg when hes going up and down and i love him behind the net..great vision and passing skill..like last night..it might all depend on who he plays with..tough to answer..that line with madden and buff has been pretty good.
Jesse Rogers (3:05 PM)
couple more..we have a conference call with Keith, toes, and seabs soon...so check my blog for quotes soon
Jake (Newport Beach, CA)
So, obviously the number one goal for all these guys is the Cup, however what do you think Kane and Toews best stat line for a season will be? Either ever get to the 50 goal mark. And add in Hossa, could we see a Hawk win the Art Ross, Maurice Rocket Richard, or a Hart Memorial?
Jesse Rogers (3:06 PM)
50 on the way this team is constructed could be tough. they pas around the wealth...after the bloodletting fot cap maybe it will be diff when they load up on one line, etc. i could see toews winning something like selke or maybe MVP someday..not sure any of thse guys are scoring champions but kane should be in the team photo as he gets better
Nick (Cocoa Beach FL)
when do you think burish will make it back?
Jesse Rogers (3:07 PM)
hes doing some skating now...but still, after olympics
I think hockey OT point system should be different. Instead of 1 pt each for getting to OT why not award 1 pt for getting to the shootout and the extra for winning shootout? That would cut down on some 3 pt games. Thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (3:08 PM)
everyoine has an opinion on this. problem with yours is OT would be boring..everyone would play for the shootout so they can get at least a point..its why they eliminated ties so there was no "playing not to lose". i would go 4 on 4 for 10 minutes then a shootout but thats not perfect either..not sure what the right answer is
Jesse Rogers (3:11 PM)
