Why can shaq accept a lesser role on a good team , but iverson decides to take a lesser role on a decent team when he could have just waited and sombody like a boston could have picked him up ? I still think golden state would have been a better fit for iverson , he probually would of started
J.A. Adande (3:35 PM)
Sometimes a few years can make a huge difference. Shaq is finally in a place to accept his reduced impact. It was telling when he called himself a "high-level role player" last night. You're right, if Iverson could have gone with the program in Memphis he would have been much more attractive to a contending team around the trade deadline.
J.A. Adande (3:35 PM)
And a belated hello to everybody on this rainy, haily, (yes, hail) day in L.A.
after last night I think Lebron is the best basketball player in the world. He made crucial shot after crucial shot.....unstoppable in the paint
J.A. Adande (3:36 PM)
Impossible to argue against LeBron standing on top of the mountain at the moment. Even though he was the MVP last season, Kobe had the final say by leading his team to the championship. It wasn't just LeBron on the offensive end last night...how about blocking Pau Gasol's shot on that critical sequence?
Does China have too much inflence on All Star Voting? Does anything need to be changed to limit international fans from voting
J.A. Adande (3:38 PM)
I maintain we should just go back to balloting in the arenas. The fans who buy tickets should have a greater say...they're the ones footing the bill. Maybe if you buy the League Pass on TV or Broadband you get a vote too. Nothing wrong with giving perks to your best customers.
Mark (Los Angeles)
Maybe I'm overreacting to one loss, but after last night's game in Cleveland, I couldn't agree with you more: Kobe needs to sit and address his injuries. His FG% is plummeting, and you get the sense that he's obsessed with overcoming the injuries, which puts the whole team's focus solely on him.
J.A. Adande (3:40 PM)
It wasn't a problem in the first half, when he was on fi-yah. That third quarter-stretch too. In this case I thought Phil actually sat him a little too long then asked him to come in and microwave it in the fourth. But in general, they'd be better off monitoring his minutes right now. No need to burn out in January
OKC has already been a surprise this year, but they are still a double-team demanding big man away from really making a mark in the postseason. Do you think they can bring in an Al Jefferson or equivalent player by next year?
J.A. Adande (3:42 PM)
I think they'd rather have a guy with a better presence defensively than Jefferson. That's what they went for with Chandler. (By the way, every game that Chandler misses this season makes OKC look smarter and smarter for voiding that trade)
What is the market value of Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton? Detroit needs to trade one, but can they really get anything they would use to continue the rebuild out of it?
J.A. Adande (3:43 PM)
Tayshaun is more tradeable than Hamilton because of Hamilton's contract. And I think you could get another young guy from a team that needs a veteran presence. Detroit should go younger and younger. no need to chase a ring for the nxt couple of years
The Charlotte Bobcats (NC)
It feels great to be relevant!
J.A. Adande (3:43 PM)
Welcome to the league
Peter (Washington, DC)
With Allen Iverson's Selection to the All Star Game, The Georgetown Hoyas have had an NBA All Star every year for the last 25 years! Does any other college team even come close to this streak?
J.A. Adande (3:46 PM)
Heckuva stat. Without looking, I'm thinking UCLA and North Carolina have the best shots at matching that record. With Kareem that 15 years or so by himself, right? I wonder if MJ's first retirement knocked UNC out of contention for a 25-year run as well
I still think Kobe is the best overall player in this game. What can I answer to all these LeBron lovers ? Regular season is not the play off ?
J.A. Adande (3:48 PM)
For now, your argument is that LeBron has yet to lead his team to a championship. That's about the only thing you could cling to right now.
Dean Moll (North Royalton, Ohio)
Mr. Adande, impressive performance by the undermanned Cavs last night. What are your thoughts on Mo Williams being sideline for 4-6 weeks? I think the Cavs should be alright with the long home stand coming up.... and they got the KING.
J.A. Adande (3:50 PM)
One night in a heavily hyped matchup isn't going to set the tone. They're going to miss him because this team still lacks consistent scoring threats beyond LeBron. That was sometmes the case even with Mo. Delonte can play better than he did last night, but they're going to drop a few extra games and that could haunt them when it comes to payoff seeds.
Curtis A. (NYC)
I'm highly anticipating the first major trade. Which team will make the first trade that increases their playoff and championship chances? I am not talking about a financial relief trade, Im talking about a trade that changes a teams odds making a playoff run!
J.A. Adande (3:52 PM)
I'd guess Houston. they have that McGrady contract sitting there. They have other movable pieces. they believe in their core enough to think they can make some noise this year even while they wait on Yao, but they know this group as-is isn't enough.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What does the NBA do if a NBA Basketball Player Tests Positive for Either HGH, PED,Or Steroids?
J.A. Adande (3:55 PM)
1st offense is a suspension, as Rashard Lewis had at the start of the season. If by "what does the NBA do" you mean how does the sport react, well, don't expect a string of "Outside the Lines" on PEDs in the NBA. Because the league isn't as obsessed with numbers as baseball, you wouldn't get the uproar. You haven't heard anyone claiming Rashard's 3-pointers in the past are tainted, have you?
Ryan (Worcester, MA)
If you argue LeBron hasn't done it in the playoffs I gotta say you're crazy... I think if you look up playoff stats LeBron gets even better, and even though they got swept, he carried a team to the finals that had less talent than the teams that Kobe was one when he was making trade requests. Just be patient, I'm sure LeBron will have plenty of championships when all is said and done, and past achievements shouldn't affect current pecking orders.
J.A. Adande (3:59 PM)
Big difference between saying he hasn't done it in the playoffs and saying he hasn't won a championship. Of course he has done it in the playoffs. I watched that Game 5 in Detroit. But I base my decisions on known vs. the unknown. We've seen Kobe get it done more than LeBron. Last night we saw LeBron do the job better than Kobe. That's the latest info we have.
Don't check your stock portfolio today, it will only make a rainy day in LA that much worse...
J.A. Adande (4:00 PM)
okay, no marketwatch for me.
Is there more of a Jekyll and Hyde case right now than Miami? Sometimes they look like they belong with the big boys, sometimes they lose to Charlotte/Memphis by ~30 points. Even if they do land one of the big'uns next summer (names withheld to avoid jinxing it), what's to say they'll be able to avoid this bug? In 2006 they had crucial role players, even with Wade and a big name they have far too many players that don't bring it every night, and a greenhorn coach who hasn't proved he can get it out of them.
J.A. Adande (4:02 PM)
That's the sign of youth, all around. but nobody stays young forever. Best-case scenario is the keep Wade, add a star and the younger players develop the consistency that we've seen Atlanta display this year. That should be the model, with Wade as an upgrade over Joe Johnson.
Jose (Princeton, NJ)
J.A., are the 76ers really shopping Iggy?
J.A. Adande (4:03 PM)
That's been the rumbling for a while. To the surprise of some other GMs, actually.
Do you think the NBA should give marquee players more incentive to want to do the slam dunk contest for the fans? Maybe more prize money?
J.A. Adande (4:05 PM)
The problem is the marquee players are also the richest players, so hard to imagine the league coming up with enough catch to grab their attention. As Barkley said, it needs to come from players understanding it's for the good of the league and will help them out with endorsements. Don't you think some of Dwight Howard's ad income is derived from the extra exposure in the dunk contest? Especially when it gives him a chance to showcase his personality
Jazz a playoff team this year, and if so where about do you see them finishing? Anything for Boozer?
J.A. Adande (4:08 PM)
They could squeak in if Boozer keeps playing as well as he did in San Antonio the other night. If anything I'd try to do something with Okur, who has really dropped off this season and almost clogs them up now. Deron Williams was barely even looking his way the other night.
Scared Boston Fan ((Mass))
with all the injuries and thier age. Isn't this basically the last year we can win it all? I have about zero hope that we will be elite this time next year...
J.A. Adande (4:09 PM)
Yeah, this is it, and I'm liking the chances less and less every day.
Quentin Seaborn (Auburn)
Is OKC really this good, or do they have a 10 games losing streak in them?
J.A. Adande (4:12 PM)
If they're going to be this committed to playing defense then the bottom won't drop out on them Defense gives you a chance every night, even if Durant is having one of his off games.
J.A. Adande (4:13 PM)
Okay, I have to deal with the rain-wrecked streets of L.A. Keep your fingers crossed for me. See you next week when I'm sure we'll be talking all-star snubs.
J.A. Adande (4:13 PM)
I can hear the bitterness already
