Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:00 PM)
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the first ESPN.com fantasyt racing chat of 2010...so it's time to say what I normally do at a time like this..."Let's get this partaaaaayyyy started!"
Grasshopper (Tenn. Go vols..kiffin SUCKS!!!)
I am so happy to be back... Last year I didn't know about the guru and fell too far behind, not this year. Just wanted the gurus dark horses for the 500. Great to be back!!
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:02 PM)
When you're looking for a Daytona 500 darkhorse..how about first answering this question...Which driver has finished sixth or better in the last four 500s? The answer is Elliott Sadler. He's a potential darkhorse I also think Jamie McMurray is as well as Jeff Burton..Among the Group "A" drivers..my sleeper there is Kurt Busch.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that Danica Patrick will win her first NASCAR Nationwide Series race in 2010? If So Where?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:04 PM)
I try to never say never..I guess she could luck up on a win, but I don't see it. This year is all about her gaining experience. She'll try to keep doing what she did last Saturday in the ARCA race..find a comfortable place to run and soak up as much as she can learn each lap. One thing about it, she seems to have a great capacity to learn quickly and will certainly be more competitive at the end of the year than she'll be in her first few Nationwide races.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Mark, welcome back! Hope you had a good offseason! I haven't made any picks yet for fantasy but my early thoughts are 14-29-1-98, thoughts?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:07 PM)
Nick..thanks for the welcome back..Is this for Yahoo...make sure you play the new Stock Car Challenge...much like Yahoo only better..14,29, and 1 I can live with..98 not to sure about that one yet...need to see a little more practice and how he does in the 150-mile race tomorrow.
whats up guru hope you had a great off season what do you think of carl edwards stealing a victory this weekened hes been getting better and better at theses restictor plate races last few years plus ford seems to have found a good plate race program im going with him as a dark horse this weekened whats your thoughts on him pulling it out?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:08 PM)
Carl looks pretty strong, but I just think the guys up front when all is said and done Sunday will be Chevys with Hendrick horsepower under the hood..Carl should be near the front, but I don't see him winning.
tim (down south)
hows this line up guru, 2-88-29-7
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:09 PM)
2,88, and 29 I can live with that but 7? Not sure I want to go there..Again, before you go for your low pick let's eyeball the 150-mile qualifying races and see what we can learn from them.
What time is the race day chat for Daytona 500?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:10 PM)
9:30 eastern...6:30 LA time...better put on two alarms and a big pot of coffee..lol..
RAYGORDONREID ( ATLANTICBEACH FLORIDA 32266 )
QUEASTIONS TO MARK GARROW AT 3.20PM WELLGOODWEDNESDAY GURU QUESTION 1 WHOYOU HAVE TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIP QUESTION2 DAYTONA SUNDAY
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:11 PM)
Yo Ray Gordon...hope you had a good off-season my man..Championship? Still has to go through Jimmie Johnson..Martin will be right there again and Hamlin could potentially be there right down to the wire..As for Sunday, my brain and heart are pulling for Martin.
Aj (Chicago, IL)
If you had to pick between Kyle Busch and Truex who would you go with?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:12 PM)
AJ...I'd go with Kyle..He led 84 laps last year in the 500 and got taken out but clearly had the better car..not to mention he won the summer race here in 2008..That was a handling race big time and so should Sunday, especially with the bigger restrictor plates and the drivers carrying a little more speed into the corners.
Why did they chagne the format from salary SCC game to Group game where you just pick 3 drivers in Group A and 2 in Group B. The salary game made people look for those "darkhorses" every week and made the game much more fun and interesting. Thsis new format does not seem too intriguing. The only reason I am playing is because of your chats. Thanks guru.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:15 PM)
Joe, I guess they changed the game just to try and liven things up..Speaking of looking for darkhorses how about Group "B"..there are 40 some odd drivers in that group and you have to pick two each week..Don't know if you've joined a league for the ESPN game..but my group is "Jayski Junkies"...give you a chance to go up against the Guru...but be careful, very careful what you wish for...lol...
Mark: I want to see this answer from Joe's question
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:16 PM)
Well then..there you go my friend...I'd welcome you back, but you're already putting the "heat" on me...lol..
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:17 PM)
Won't post question..but love you too Ken!..lol..
Mark: does Jr. have his head screwed on right....YET?
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Where do you think will be the best finish for Danica Patrick in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:21 PM)
I'm thinking she'll have seven races under her belt when she returns to Fontana for a second time in October..She'll have some stock car experience under her belt and will have run competitive laps there..a place she already has some experience..So, I'm thinking second visit to California.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:22 PM)
Miss hit the button...I do think Junior has his head on right ...quietly confident..Mark Martin is really working on pumping up Junior's confidence too and that will be a big help.
Chris (Charlotte, NC)
5,29,19,55 What do you think?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:24 PM)
Chris, 5 and 29 can live with big time..19 is one of my top dark horse picks..as for the 55..he's got to make the race first..
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Thanks Mark! It's for Yahoo, but I'll give fantasy stock car on ESPN a try to. Also, does RPM get their chassis from Roush or build it themselves? Sorry if the typing's bad I got a splint on my right ring finger from basketball.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:26 PM)
Yes RPM is getting cars, chassis and engines from Roush Fenway and Roush Yates..Then RPM will fine tune what the get from the "Cat in the Hat"...sorry about the ring finger..did you use the middle one to signal the player that did that to you?..lol..
Mark, true you have to look for the darkhorses in these groups, but once I find it, I pick that driver up. With the slary game even if you found the darkhorse, you still had no idea if you could afford that driver or not. So if you could not afford the driver, then you might have to rethink your strategy. Thsi group thing is pick and play.
Why the step down on prizes for winners in this new fantasy game, SC?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:28 PM)
Don't know the answer to that one Joe..All I know is that I "race" for the fame and glory..not the cash.....
It's cold as hell in Hendersonville (24) and the wind is blowing 40 so we need a little heat to warm things up and a little heat goes with your job...and, you not I'm not going to give you a break.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:29 PM)
Just for that I hope it goes from Jeff Gordon "degree" to Jamie McMurray..lol..
Norm (Palm Springs CA)
Hi Mark, Hope you enjoyed your NASCAR time off. Are the Fords running the new engines at Daytona?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:30 PM)
Norm, a bunch of them will run them in the 150-mile qualifying races and then switch back to the old Ford motor for the 500 because they feel better about its durability..That's the plan Biffle will definitely use and probably all of the other Roush drivers.
Kevin Harvick has motovation for the Daytona 500 sunday but, who do you think will come and possibly win or do you think Harvick will win? I predict Kyle Busch wins on Sunday.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:31 PM)
Grant, I think Harvick will be very competitive, but I like Kyle Busch a little bit better. So, like you, I could see him winning Sunday.
Larry (Olympia, WA)
Have you heard any more rumors on a NASCAR track, much more importantly, a race in the Northwest?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:35 PM)
Larry I haven't heard anything lately..NASCAR has definitely put a potential track in the Northwest on the back burner..given the state officials reluctance to help I don't see a track up there any time soon.
Norm (Palm Springs CA)
What do you think of the format this year? The Cup Sponsor lets you pick 6 drivers; 2 from 1-10, 2 from 11-20 and 2 from the remainder.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:36 PM)
Well that sounds like it might be fun to play..but I'm a Stock Car Challenge guy myself.
Mark: Denny is beginning to get a lot of attention. After his performance during the Chase, I like Hamlin a LOT at Daytona and the rest of the year. If 3 equipment failures had not haunted him during the Chase he would have won the Championship,
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:37 PM)
Ken, I'm a big fan of Hamlin too, but I'm not sure about that for Daytona..I feel better about him from California on.
Just on ESPN: Four-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson has crashed during practice for the Daytona 500.Johnson was among several cars caught up in the accident during Wednesday's second practice at Daytona International Speedway.Mike Bliss seemed to trigger it when he lost control of his car coming out of a turn. Bliss turned sideways, then shot up the track and rammed into Joey Logano.Kyle Busch also was involved.Johnson and Logano switched to backup cars for Sunday's season opener.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:38 PM)
If you have twitter..I put that up awhile ago..name: GuruGarrow..Johnson's car is being sent back to Charlotte and they'll bring it back in a couple of days to the be the Daytona 500 bac-up.
By the way Allen probably won't like what I wrote...is he still in FedEx Memorial?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:39 PM)
Yeah...where is Alan in PA?
Heck, if they keep wrecking cars they are going to be running go carts for the race.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:40 PM)
I hear that...temperature here could be a problem it's pretty cold and wind is blowing pretty good..you never know?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:47 PM)
Oh by the way...my prelim team for the new Stock Car Challenge..from Group A...5,14, and 18...from Group B..29 and 88..but seriously considering 1 and 31 too..instead of 88..
FYI...there's a new team in group "Jayski Junkies" by the name of Mark's Memesis...guess who...double or nothing on the lunch you owe me?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:48 PM)
I hope by Memisis..you mean "Nemesis"..but bring it on dude..I'll be glad to take you down...what's you league's name?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:49 PM)
Cool...I'll take your lunch money...I did it when I was the bully in first grade and I'll be glad to do it again..lol..
Norm (Palm Springs CA)
Mark, (Well that sounds like it might be fun to play..but I'm a Stock Car Challenge guy myself) I just happen to work there, winner gets a trip to where you are now, plus other stuff weekly.I am also 3 time local champ, with of course your help. I too am a SCC guy now. Have you been to steak and shake yet.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:51 PM)
Haven't been to Steak and Shake yet...I'm still waiting for the lunch someone owes me from last season...but I'm not naming names....
Guru!!! Glad to have you back for another season. Give me 2 out of these for the 500... 29, 39, 33, 88, 17, 83, and 1?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:53 PM)
Thanks and I'm glad to be back...My pre-Thursday ranking for those guys...29,39,88,33,1,17, and 83...no real bow-wow in the bunch...
Better start; Mears, Hornish, Sorenson, Dinger, Labonte, or Elliot?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:54 PM)
I like Allmendinger the best in that group followed by Elliott.
Take my money...you have to beat me to break even already or has that Yankee brain gone dead again
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:55 PM)
I believe your pain medication has got your brain mixed up as to who whooped who...lol..
Big T (Mark)
Great to have you back for another great year. Your help and crew chief notes are vefy much appreciated. In our NASCAR contest the top 36 drivers are put into groups of 6 based on points and and all the remaining drivers are placed in the 7th group. We pick one driver from each group each week. In the 7th group I am looking at either Regan Smith, Bill Elliott, Brad Keslowski, which one is looking good to you at this point?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:56 PM)
I think it will come down to Elliott and Keselowski...Elliott is the safer pick for a nice top-20..but Keselowski has more upside..he'll push it to the front if he can and he's got two teammates in the race too and that will be a big help..just depends on how brave you are and if your nerves can stand having agressive guy like Keselowski on your team.
Do you have you top 20 ranking for hte 500 ready yet?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:57 PM)
Ryan, You know what ESPN won't be asking me to do that this year..but maybe for Wednesday's chat I need to go and do it anyway..I'll try to remember that for California.
The last time I checked Ambrose finished ahead of the 88 for 2009. Your brain has turned to mush.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:58 PM)
There you go again..the fever and drugs have you talking out of your head..Please get help...
Mark, I'm a little surprised and dissapointed at the system change for SCC as well. With no cap or start limit, most people will start the 48, 5, and 24 pretty much every race. It seems like there needs to be some sort of challenge there preventing you from starting Jimmie every single race. Why would somebody ever start Clint Bowyer over Jimmie or Mark Martin? I'm interested to see how it turns out.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:59 PM)
I don't think you'll want those three every week..and Group B will be a "bear" to deal with every week...there will be lots of options I can tell you that.
Norm (Palm Springs CA)
Mark, Do you think JPM will continue to improve, his new teammate looked pretty good in the shoot-out. He does have some extra track time from the Rolex. JPM was even bumping there.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:00 PM)
I think JPM still has room to get better yet and should be fun to watch this year. As long as he's got enough horsepower under the hood, he'll be nosing around the front a lot in my opinion.
Do you think Hamlin's injury will catch up to him this season? 10 months is a looong time to have an injury like that.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:01 PM)
He should be okay in the car..he'll just have to be careful outside of it so it's not injured anymore than it is right now.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:02 PM)
Got to run folks..don't forget to join me Sunday morning at 9:30 eastern..for the race day chat..until then..the one..the only .."The Guru has left the building!"
