Brian (Washington, IL)
What did you think of the HUGE crash yesterday? Was it on purpose to get him air born or not?
Ed Hinton (1:30 PM)
Woops. Forgot to welcome everyone before posting. So, good afternoon all. To answer, no, it was not Carl's purpose to launch Brad K -- just to turn him.
If Keselowski's car doesn't take to the air, is everyone still calling for Edwards' head on a silver platter, or are they praising NASCAR for letting the boys race and creating some drama?
Ed Hinton (1:31 PM)
You got it, Cale. If the car doesn't launch, Carl's a tough-guy hero. Brad K had been awfully aggressive going back to last year.
Can I name drop Dale jr to appease jr nation before the flood of cousin Carl/ bk question?
Ed Hinton (1:31 PM)
Well, you can, but the flood is indeed Carl K today.
Hi Ed, the 98 had a great day yesterday again (top 5 finish), no interview? no mentioned by the FOX folks..., what a shame.
Ed Hinton (1:32 PM)
Well, they had quite a bit going on, you know. On a slower news day with a longer post race, they probably would have done a nice interview with Menard.
Did HMS ever find out what was happening to the 88?
Ed Hinton (1:34 PM)
Not sure yet, but betcha DW was right about the air pressure not matching up with the inner liner, and the inner liner flopping around. Notice the folks with tire problems were mostly Hendrick and HMS satellite teams. They seemed to be doing things with tire pressures, camber and stagger that Goodyear wouldn't have recommended.
Sherrie (North Carolina)
Ed, whats your opinion on Carl Edwards going to the Nascar trailer yesterday? I think Mr. Kesolowski should have went to the Nascar trailer right along with Edwards. Kesolowski causes more trouble on the track then anyone in the sport right now. I think he needs a talking to also.
Ed Hinton (1:36 PM)
I'm with you, Sherrie. NASCAR told them to settle matters among themselves, so Carl went out to do a little policing on behalf of several drivers K has turned in recent months. It's NASCAR's fault that the car went airborne -- those doggone wings again -- and turned the story from a simple, traditional police action into a nationally sensational story. Carl did NOT mean for K's car to go airborne.
Hi Ed,If the spoiler was back on the car, the 12 99 incident would still be a issue? I really don't think the car would have been airborne with the spoiler.
Ed Hinton (1:37 PM)
I think you're right, Ryan. Look at Newman's upside down deal at Talladega last fall, and now this one. The wing seems to be what's putting the cars on their roofs. If there'd been spoilers Sunday, K would just have spun and lost his high finish, and that would have been the end of it.
Mr. Hinton, as much as NASCAR wants to deny that the BK/Cuz feud needs some authority, behind close doors they HAVE to be ecstatic that there is some drama in the sport. With Bristol and Martinsville the next two weeks, NASCAR would be CRAZY to suspend Edwards. Thoughts?
Ed Hinton (1:39 PM)
Big Bill France, the founder, in a situation like that, in today's dollars, would have fined Edwards $50,000 in public, and then privately written him a check back for $100,000. Yes, NASCAR needs something to get worked up about. Helton is the only one who can be such a wet blanket on such matters.
Was Nascar mostly mad at Carl for driving the wrong way on pit road?
Jeremy (New York)
Not to belabor the point, but . . . . . as a fan it seems like Brad K doesn't have a whole lot of friends in the garage, and lots of drivers who don't like him. What do you think the reaction has been among the teams? Do you think there's hope that this episode might make Brad K a less dangerous driver? As a fan, I hope this means that he wrecks fewer competitors.
Ed Hinton (1:41 PM)
Oh, I'm sure they were hot about that. But that part may get lost in the hoopla. Probably, if a penalty comes down, they'll mention driving the wrong way on the pit road too.
Ed Hinton (1:42 PM)
oops a tech glitch. i was answering the one about driving the wrong way on the pit road. You're right that K hasn't endeared himself to the garage area.
Kp Kool (Indy)
Edwards in a d bag for spinning K in the straight at 185 plus, do it in the turns! No excuse for that crap!!
Ed Hinton (1:42 PM)
Giving everyone a chance to speak here.
Ed, the 2, 9 and the 42 seemed to have everyone covered yesterday, with solid runs by the 17 and some second tier cars as well. But, how crazy is it that the Hendrick cars can experiment, have issues, and Jimmie can still finish 12th? Just how far behind is everyone else?
Ed Hinton (1:43 PM)
Well, we know by now that Knaus can always salvage something if they're not knocked completely out of the race.
I hope they do not suspend Carl. Don't tell the boys to take the gloves off then punish them when they do. I'm starting a company that makes all black race gloves. I already partnered with Edwards...do you want in?
Ed Hinton (1:44 PM)
There you go, Gary. Exactly.
Doesn't Carl really owe Brad payback for 3 other times that Brad wrecked him out?
Ed Hinton (1:45 PM)
Listen, K's got a list owing him payback that's as long as your arm.
Hi Ed, good to be here. My issue is more with Brad than Carl. After the crash Brad commented that it wasn't ok what Carl did because he wasn't going for the win or a top finish. Like THEN it would be ok???I don't think Brad gets it that other people think his racing style is not too cool. They don't like getting wrecked because Brad won't play nice and give a little. Whatcha think?
Ed Hinton (1:46 PM)
Another very observant comment. You guys are speaking for yourselves today, and very well indeed.
Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)
Why are fans so down on Brad K? He's a talented driver who seems to come from the same mold as Big E. I can't wait until he actually finishes a race!
Ed Hinton (1:47 PM)
I saw Big E come in as a rookie. Brad is rougher than that. Yes, rougher.
Jack (Tulsa, OK)
What do you think is the most likely scenario to play out by NASCAR after the CE/BK fiasco?
Ed Hinton (1:48 PM)
Stiff fine, maybe points. If they suspend him they'll be opening huge cans of worms with sponsors, etc., so I don't think they'll sit him down for a week. Fuel on the fire.
Ed, the problem I have with the Carl/Brad K fued is that it RUINED the end of the race yesterday. If Carl doesn't wreck him, we see Montoya chasing down Kurt Busch in a dramatic run to the checkers, who wins, who knows, but I would've rather seen that then all the Mickey Mouse GWC's Nascar has instituted, so for that I want Carl parked at Bristol.
Ed Hinton (1:48 PM)
Another excellent point here.
Good day, Mr Hinton. Hope you're doing good. Please right the NASCAR ship sailing to Byzantium. Just when the Atlanta race was about to be remembered for tire troubles and paltry attendance, Cousin Carl does something to scramble all of that away. There's no doubt about the 99's intent. How should NASCAR handle it? I say nothing more than a minor money and points fine. NASCAR has said they'll let the drivers handle on-track confrontations, now is the time to let that happen. Also. How in the hell didn't Edwards realize Bristol and Martinsville would've been better to do something like that? Take care.
Ed Hinton (1:50 PM)
Yeats points out, "This is no country for old men." Maybe NASCAR's been that way lately, but the old-time way of dealing with things has resurfaced. So maybe it is a realm for the old ways.
Mr. Hinton I think it's hillarious that Keslowski is being such a cry baby over this situation. I completely understand that getting wrecked intentionally by a lap car is uncool, but I've watched him drive through god knows how many cars in the last 2 years between nationwide and cup and am suprised more people havent' wrecked Baby Brad yet, your thoughts.
Ed Hinton (1:51 PM)
You guys are on such a great roll with your comments that I just want to post 'em == they're so complete they don't need much comment from me.
I wanna know how does Mark Martin go from being one of the quickest cars all weekend, and within 10-15 laps he was back in 31st place. And what was up with all the tire problems
Ed Hinton (1:52 PM)
the hendrick teams were messing with tire pressures and stagger bigtime. Goodyear just didn't bring a tire that fit the HMS game plan.
Roush is made up of two drivers who are more marketing tools, and two real wheelmen. Roush gives all his support to Ragan, who he thought he could turn into a poor man?s Bill Elliot, and Edwards, with his back flips, one great season where he was getting all the Roush support, and golly gee interviews. So Kenseth and Biffle don?t give good quotes, they are the best drivers on that team. I know the media and Roush desperately wants Edwards to be successful, but when do you finally call a spade a spade???
Ed Hinton (1:53 PM)
Say what you want about Carl's move yesterday. But don't say he's not a legit driver. He is. Very much so.
Tommy (Dallas, TX)
I am glad that cuzin Carl took out Brad Kesolousi. There have been many other drivers that have threatened to do it (Hamlin, Montoya). NASCAR wanted drama and here it is baby. GO ?99?
Ed Hinton (1:54 PM)
There ya go, Tommy.
Kevin (Boston, MA)
Ed,What do you think NASCAR should do to Edwards? The shot where you could see his hands turn the wheel to the right is very damning and I believe he should be parked for a week. Martinsville, Bristol...no big deal, but at Atlanta? He easily could have killed someone there.
Ed Hinton (1:54 PM)
I just don't think they'll park him. Too much problem with sponsors, etc.
Darin (St. Louis)
Good afternoon, I was a huge 99 fan but after what happened yesterday I think I may be changing my driver. I like that the 99 retaliated but I wish he had punched him in his face rather than use his car to wreck the 12. NASCAR should suspend both drivers. Carl for wrecking Brad and Brad for wrecking many other people over his career. What are your thoughts please?
Ed Hinton (1:55 PM)
Oh, man, you should be for him now more than ever.
paul menard is 9 in the points and 3 top 20 and atop 5 finish.slugger labbe is giving paul good cars. ed do you think paul can stay running this goodall season.
Ed Hinton (1:56 PM)
He might hang in. He seems to be calming down on the bad moves lately.
Do you think Mr Heinrichs will park Dale and put Skinner in the #88 until they can figure out if Dale's problems are mental, physical or both?
Ed Hinton (1:57 PM)
Just had to post that one. What a thought!! Skinner, the one-time teammate of Senior, back when Senior didn't want any teammates at all.
Ed, we all have our opinions... what is yours? I was positively giddy watching Carl take out Brad. It was such an exciting moment, that it took the pain away from watching Mark Martin crash in the final laps. It was good to see Brad get what he deserved. He wasn't hurt, the car did it's job. Perhaps he'll learn a lesson. SO... what was YOUR emotion watching the incident?
Ed Hinton (1:59 PM)
Take away the rollover, and it was exactly the sort of thing needed to get K's attention on behalf of ALL the other drivers. And as I've said, the flip wasn't Carl's fault. It was NASCAR's screwy aero package. With a spoiler rather than a wing, I don't think the car would have flipped.
It is all about how you spin it. In the interview, Brad says he was concerned about hurting fans in the stands. But he wasn't that concerned at Dega, was he? I think it is funny that suddenly -- the guy who causes more wrecks than anybody is concerned???BTW-- Study the history. Carl don't mess with anybody until they mess with him. Brad, on the other hand, goes out looking for a fight. Yet, Carl seems to be taking the beating on this. I don't understand.
Ed Hinton (1:59 PM)
There you go, Andrew. Man, you guys are all to the point today.
Ed Hinton (2:00 PM)
Gotta go get ready for TV, folks. Ryan McGee will be with you shortly. Thanks for stopping by.
