Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
Hello folks. What's on your mind this week?
Any talk of running Justin Allgaier a few Cup races this season??? You know, to prepare him to take over the 77 next year.....
Terry Blount (2:01 PM)
Tracy, I believe you just threw Sam under the bus. No plans yet on Justin, but if he continues to race well in NW I think you'll see him run a few Cup races toward the end of the season.
I've read comments about the 48 not being in 1st despite 3 wins but the way I see it he IS - 20 ahead of the 2 & 30 ahead of 10 others. being in "1st" thru 1st 26 means as much as leading a race going INTO final pit stop (ask 24 or 2 about that). the only #s that matter are pts ahead of 13th
Terry Blount (2:03 PM)
Hi Sid. The point is it's ridiculous to have a system where someone can win 60 percent of the races and not have the most points in the standings. I've said this for years and will continue to say it: NASCAR should award more points for winning.
Does any driver have better car control than Jimmie Johnson both during the race and with victory burnouts through crowds of people?
Terry Blount (2:05 PM)
Actually, I've seen JJ lose it a few times on those burnouts, but you're right. Jimmie is better than anyone else at controlling his car and getting it to do what he needs it to do without wrecking.
We are huge #18 fans and were really happy to see Kyle turn a bad race into a top 10 and 10th in points. Do you think Bristol was the jump start that Kyle needed to get #18 back to winning races?
Terry Blount (2:06 PM)
I'm not sure. Kyle always is good at Bristol, and it doesn't really tell you a lot about set-ups for big tracks. So I need to see how he does at Texas before making an assessment.
Paul (Tustin, CA)
Doesn't the #48's success only show how far superior Jimmie Johnson is to the drivers of #24, #88, #5 and even #14 and #39?
Terry Blount (2:07 PM)
No, it's shows his team, and especially his crew chief, is better. But I agree that JJ doesn't get enough credtit for his driving skills.
I know I just threw Sam under the bus, but this is his 3rd season and he hasn't really shown anything. Time to step it up or go home!
Terry Blount (2:08 PM)
I agree Tracy. Sam is one of the best guys I've even met in sports, but he's on the clock this year.
cody (richmond ky )
are they taking wings off the cars when racing at talladagea
Terry Blount (2:09 PM)
Yes sir. The wings are gone for good. It's all spoilers everywhere from here.
Frank (Kingston, Pa)
Terry, I have read how the 2 had a dominant car and that the 48 was only good on short runs. I also heard Knaus say he wanted to be in the top 10 toward the end of the race. Stats show there is a caution within 25 laps of the end at Bristol. Did Knaus once again set up his car for a win better than anybody? While the 2 led the most laps he could not pass the 14 at the end of the race when the 14 had only 2 tires
Terry Blount (2:11 PM)
This is an arguable point, but I thought the 2 should have taken two tires and stayed out front. There was only 10 laps to go and Kurt had the best car all day. I think he could have held off Jimmie. Tony proved you could stay up front with two tires.
Paul's question makes me think that Johnson's domination is a perfect excuse to bring IROC back. The world's best drivers in equally prepared cars - then we can really find out how good the drivers are.
Terry Blount (2:12 PM)
Some people would say we have that now with the COT. But the truth is no two cars are truly identical, even in IROC.
Kurt Busch taking down JJ this year. You agree?
Terry Blount (2:13 PM)
I think he has as good a chance to do it as anyone, but I'm not sure anyone can.
Since #12 is unsponsored and no sponsor seems to want to be assocaiate with Brad doesn't it make more sense for Penske to put Justin Allgaier in the #12 and let Brad focus on Nationwide?
Terry Blount (2:15 PM)
Not gonna happen Paul. Sponsors aren't afraid of Brad. It's just tough times. Brad is a very talented driver. Justin will be in Cup soon, but not at Brad's expense.
We may have that now with the COT, but at the very least IROC would leave Johnson without Knaus and that would prove at least something.
Terry Blount (2:16 PM)
Good point, but no sponsors are willing to put up the money to back a new IRC series at the moment.
Rocky (San Antonio)
When Dale said on his radio that he can't lay down at Bristol that sounds like he lays down at other tracks. When have you seen Dale lay down and quit?
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
No, and he screamed right after that he never lays down.
With the amount of races Johnson is winning do you think he or J.Gordon will get to 100 wins first?
Terry Blount (2:20 PM)
Interesting question. Right now I'd have to say JJ, even though Jeff is 32 wins ahead of him.
Honestly I think Kurt Busch is a better driver than Jimmie Johnson.
Terry Blount (2:22 PM)
It's subjective, of course, but I don't think anyone is better than JJ right now. In my book, I did least Kurt as underrated because I feel his driving skills are outstanding. Others with great driving skills or Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Edwards, to name a few.
12 fan (Michigan)
It says on the espn drivers page that the 12 is sponsored by verizon. Is that current?
Terry Blount (2:24 PM)
Yes, sort of, but they can't put their name on the car because of exclusivity rights for Sprint.
Josh (Conn. )
Do you buy Bifflle's line about his radio becoming upplugged so he couldn't hear his spotter or was that payback for some old score to settle with Martin?
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
No payback. Just a mistake. Greg has the utmost respect for Mark, his former teammate. But I wonder how people would have reacted had that situation been Brad K instead of Biff.
Have you heard any updates on the condition of Larry Pearson or Charlie Glotzbach? Do you think that the severity of the crash was due to the construction of the cars that they were driving, or would the same injuries have happened in a Cup car? I hope the incident doesn't end Legends racing at Bristol. These guys deserve the chance to race, have fun, and showcase their talents for a generation of fans who have never seen them race.
Terry Blount (2:29 PM)
Pearson was moved to a different hospital yesterday. Both will get throught this. The injuries probably wouldn't have been as severe in a COT car, but I don't think 70 year old men should race cars at high speeds. It's nice for the fans but way too dangerous for these guys. They just don't have the reactions to do it, especially when they have driven at those speeds in many years.
Dee (Las Vegas)
I can't believe I'm asking this, but is Paul Menard or someone else from the RPM stable not named Kasey Kahne a threat to win a race this season? If so, who wins first, Menard, Sadler, or Allmendinger?
Terry Blount (2:30 PM)
At the start of the season I would have said AJ. Something has clicked this year for Paul. He's the biggest surprise of the season so far. But winning? I'm not so sure about that.
Terry,Enjoyed your article on Penske and Dodge I think Dodge looks great and really has a shot at the championship with Kurt. Also they are tied with Ford for second in Manufact. point with just three entries. All in all the only thing they lost by dropping RPM was Kahne but BK sure looks good for the future of Dodge along with Allgaier. by the way I saw a post, BK is sponsored by Verizon just cant run the logo and by having one team Dodge can advertise there brand like Mopar ETC..like at Bristol and Atlanta.Your thoughts?
Terry Blount (2:33 PM)
Penske looks better than ever, showing Dodge can get it done with one major team. As as said earlier, Verizon can't put its name on the car because of Sprint exclusivity, but I wonder how much Verizon is spending since it has limitations.
Cory (Geneva, IL)
Does Jr have a valid point about pit speeding and the way the zone system works? I didn't see him anything different than any other driver, in fact, I thought if anything they might get him coming out of that stop.
Terry Blount (2:35 PM)
The pit road speeding issue is out of control. The cars need speedometers. A tach isn't accurate enough. As I wrote today; NASCAR is measuring speed. The drivers are measuring RPMs. Shouldn't the enforcer and the accused culprit be looking at the same thing?
Afternoon Terry, do you think that Smoke's 2nd place run this weekend could be the sign of the end of his traditional Spring slumber?
Terry Blount (2:36 PM)
I don't think you can read too much is what happened at Bristol. It's doesn't mean a thing about what the team will do on 1.5-mile ovals.
Tanner Bergh (SD)
Hey Terry! After the first couple races it seems as though Jamie McMurray has started to get out of all the talk about "good drivers," why do you think that everyone is now counting him out?
Terry Blount (2:39 PM)
I don't know everyone is counting him out, but he hasn't set the world on fire since Daytona. His 8th-place showing at Bristol was his first top 15 since Daytona.
Terry, any news coming in yet from the spoiler test today?
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
The cars are slower, but that's not a bad thing. Kurt Busch said the car has more drag, but that could lead to more side-by-side racing.
Jeff (Chi Town)
Who do you like this weekend at Martinsville?
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
This will shock you Jeff, but I like Jimmie Johnson.
Maxine (Tyler, Texas)
Do you expect Nascar to penalize or put Harvick on probation for intentionally dumping Joey Logano on the last lap of the Nationwide race?
Terry Blount (2:42 PM)
Nope. It's have at it boys.
Wayne (St. Pete, Fl. )
Do you consider Bobby Labonte to be a start & parker like Blaney, Nemechek, Waltrip etc.?
Terry Blount (2:44 PM)
Not even close. Bobby is racing the entire event time. He's doing everything he can with what he has.
Nancy (St. Louis)
Do you thing #48 success is more frustrating to the other Henricks #24, #88, #14, #39 and #5 or the Gibbs, Roush and Penske drivers?
Terry Blount (2:45 PM)
It's frustrating to everybody. But probably moreso to Jeff than anyone else since his cars are made by the same guys in the same shop.
Terry, You said earlier that you thought JJ would hit 100 before JG. But is it really realistic to think anyone will hit 100 wins again. And if so wouldnt you say Kyle has a better shot than anyone at this point. I mean he has more wins than anyone before age 25 and still has his best racing ahead of him.
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
We're only talking about Cup wins. Kyle has 16 of those. But you're right. It won't be easy for anyone in this era to get to 100 wins. It never has been, for that matter. Only two people have done it. But I think JJ has the best shot at it right now with the3 way he's piling up Cup wins.
robert (ky )
is there a fav at martinsville this week
Terry Blount (2:49 PM)
JJ is the fave at Martinsville and the fave everywhere except the road courses.
norm (palm springs ca)
JPM has been pretty unlucky so far this year, he has been fast most races, do you see them getting better luck, you Ganasi wants to win bad now the Penske is looking good, do you them winning another race this year?
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
I see Kurt winning several times this year. I think JPM will get back near the top and may win at an oval this season.
Issn't the point of racing to see who has the fastest car? If i wanted to watch cars side by side i'd watch the pace laps more often! Quit killing these cars and let them go the drivers aren't going to drive the car faster than the track will allow!
Terry Blount (2:52 PM)
If they let them go at Daytona and Talladega they would exceed 230 mph. No one is going to allow that. If the cars are going 210 but running single file all day, no one wants to see that.
Dont you see that as a problem that JJ is the favorite everywhere?
Terry Blount (2:53 PM)
Yes, but it's a fact for the moment.
How possible is it for Hendricks to take up the top 4 this weekend? They have done the top 3 before and they all seem to run really good here.
Terry Blount (2:54 PM)
It's possible, but not likely. Everything would have to work ot perfectly for all four cars. I don't see that happening.
How come during the 2 seasons that Addington crew chiefed the #18 for JJ Yeley they didn't do anything and then when Kyle took over he won 12 races?
Terry Blount (2:55 PM)
Isn't it obvious? One is a great stock car driver. One isn't.
norm (palm springs)
Do you think Penske told Brad to let the 12 win in the NW race, he has a history of that in Indy cars?
Terry Blount (2:56 PM)
Absolutely not. All he told them was not to wreck each other.
If JJ is the favorite everywhere, how is that JJ's fault? It isn't. Everyone else should step it up.
Terry Blount (2:56 PM)
Couldn't have said it better myself Elaine.
Do you think too much was made earlier this year about Childress being back to the front?
Terry Blount (2:58 PM)
No. RCR has made major improvements. Harvick still leads the standings. But everything pales in comparison to JJ winning most of the time.
Where were the fans at Bristol? Do you think NASCAR has changed so much the cars (not stock), the tracks (gas mileage tracks), and no real bumping that it has finally lost contact with what the sport used to be about? When the Southern 500 in Darlington was a big deal, I am sure we would all agree the racing was a lot better....
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
I don't agree with that Michael. People tend to look back through rose colored glasses. Many races years ago had only one driver finish on the lead lap. It was rare to see more than five or six on the lead lap. The economy has hurt attendance. And prices for hotels and tickets need to continue to come down.
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
Gotta run folks. Some excellent questions today. Have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
