Chris Sheridan (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon from New York, where I covered the Board of Governors meeting Friday before heading to Boston on Saturday for Game 1 of Heat-Celtics (my preferred chat topic for today). Will be back in Boston on Tuesday, in Orlando on Wednesday for Game 2 of MJ'Cats-Magic, then on to Miami for Games 3 and 4 of Bos-Mia next weekend. Be sure to take a look at the Daily Dime each day. That baby is going 7 days a week now that the playoffs are here, with lots of terrific content from every series. Off we go ...
Due to recent developments, how far do you see the Jazz going?
Chris Sheridan (3:02 PM)
Okur is a killer loss on top of AK. I picked Denver in 6, and now it might be shorter than that.
Can Charlotte win at least two games in this series?
Chris Sheridan (3:03 PM)
That's what I have them doing (my pick was Orl in 6), and I think they need to win Wednesday to sow a seed of doubt in Orlando's collective mind. Obviously, S.Jax's availability or not for major minutes will be a major factor.
Baily, Los Altos Hills, CA [via mobile]
Chris, what do you think of Portland? Do you think they proved something without Brandon Roy and do you think they can win the series?
Chris Sheridan (3:05 PM)
They are going to need more out of Rudy F. than they got last night, and they are not going to get that kind of an output from Andre M. for seven games. But that being said, they did a fantactic job of controlling the tempo of that game to their liking last night. Best game of the weekend.
David Harris (Miami)
I am a huge heat fan and have watched all 82 games this year. Against Rondo, there is no use for Arroyo or Chalmers. Wade initiates our offense the majority of the time anyways, and we need Wade or Wright covering Rondo. He KILLS our point guards.
Chris Sheridan (3:08 PM)
Yes he does. His career FG pct against Miami in 13 games going into Game 1 was 74.4 percent. But I disagree that they need to get away from Arroyo/chalmers defending him. What they need him to do is setttle for 17 footers, which he can't make consistently. The other thing Miami MUST do is have a huge edge in second-chance points against the NBA's worst offensive rebounding team. They were doing that for the first 2 1-2 quarters of Game 1 before it got away from them.
Brodie (iowa) [via mobile]
D-rose drove he lane how many times and shot how many free throws? most lopsided officiated game ever.
Chris Sheridan (3:11 PM)
Couple back-to-back posts on this from Chicagoans, including one from a fellow named Blake that was a wee bit R-rated to be posted but made me laugh nonetheless. (The answer to the FT question is zero).
koalani (Eugene, OR)
Why can't the Blazers get that out of Andre Miller for 7 games? That Phx. D showed me nothing.
Chris Sheridan (3:12 PM)
He will be steady for seven games (he always was for Philly in the first round), but he will not be that proficient and efficient of a scorer in the fourth quarter every single night. I think you'll see Jared Dudley checking him more in Game 2.
Q (the Gaaden)
did you see that? all i got was a fine! couldn't have worked better if I planned it myself!
Chris Sheridan (3:14 PM)
Yes, Mr. Q. I took note. And it now behooves 15 other teams to have a designated agent provocateur, given the precedent.
Although they lost, Brown did a fantastic job against DHo right? Contained him and didn't care if how many shots he blocked. They were going to go after him period.
Chris Sheridan (3:15 PM)
They have 24 fouls to use, and they will use most of them. But if Orlando is hitting their 3s they are still going to win the series.
How do you see KG's suspension affecting game 2? Wade should be able to get into the lane and score at the hoop easier, while Beasley seemingly has the quickness advantage over Sheed/Big Baby. What are your thoughts?
Chris Sheridan (3:17 PM)
Curious to see whether Doc leans on Sheed or Baby. Sheed would seem the better defensive matchup againsy Beasley, but Sheed is going to have to score on the low block, too. If he stays outside too much on the offensive end, I could see Doc going quickly to Baby.
It's funny to watch Joakim run his mouth, especially after he got schooled by a 38-year old Shaq. Do you expect a different result tonight?
Chris Sheridan (3:19 PM)
No. And I also disagree with Noah's assessment of Cleveland. There are worse NBA cities to be stuck in for four days, trust me. Just need to know where to go in Cleveland. (Example: Best Vietnamese food I've ever had, except for in NY's Chinatown, was in Cleveland.)
Chris (Liberty City)
Calm down Gaaden, KG ain't worth the time. If the actress wasn't selling the epic hit he took, nothing would have ever happened.
Chris Sheridan (3:20 PM)
sorry about that Chris, forgot this was a public chat :-) also, I commented the same thing below, so if that needs to be removed I understand. But seriously, Rose shoots 18 shots in the paint and doesn't get a single call? It's a little ridiculous, don't ya think? I'm not saying it cost them the game, but I am saying that we outscored the Cavs 65-64 in quarters 2, 3 and 4 combined and the majority of the foul disparity was in that lopsided first quarter...
Chris Sheridan (3:22 PM)
That's better, Blake. I feel like the MPAA. You earned a G rating for that post.
I think Portland showed that they are not just the Brandon Roy show, going into PHX and pulling out a big win over the Home team. What are your predictions regarding game 2 on Tuesday?
Chris Sheridan (3:23 PM)
More production from Amare, and an earlier hook in the 4th for Dragic if it is close. Probably see Nash for the final 9 minutes instead of 6.
I saw the replay on the KG elbow and I saw Q over there near Pierce but I didnt see him make any hand gestures or display any crazy body language that says he was talking crap to Pierce. But with 40 seconds to go in the game and the game pretty much wrapped up KG should have acted like a veteran and ignored Q or got the refs to back Q up. He acted like his name was Rasheed Wallace.
Chris Sheridan (3:27 PM)
In KG's defense, the situation was very fluid, and I would say the referees were not quick enough to step in and get Q out of there. Also, when KG threw that left elbow, Magloire was holding his right arm and shoulder. I think that should mitigate in KG's favor somewhat, and I thought the suspension was overly punitive. Also, it is notable (and I tweeted this yesterday CSheridanESPN@twitter.com) that I thought Miami got a break that Magloire was not suspended under the leaving the bench rule. The way I saw it, this incident happened a seat or two beyond the boundary of the Heat's bench. Magloire was sitting all the way at the other end with Shav Randolph. He had no business being in the fray. Keep that one in mind when gauging the fairness of whatever leaving-the-bench penalties you see in the future.
What adjustments does SA make for game 2?
Chris Sheridan (3:32 PM)
I think one huge adjustment came right after the game when Pop called out R.Jefferson, saying some of his guys had played like "dogs." We'll see if RJ responds positively to that criticism in Game 2. He can be a force when he's on, but he's been playing for 2 years like a guy who signed-and-retired (Malik Rose's phrase for guys who quit working hard after they sign their big contract.)
Why are bulls fans clinging to this " We outscored them over the last 3 quarters!" stat like it's remotely relevant. Congrats bulls fans, your team was so hopelessly outmatched that the cavs rested on their laurels for the last 36 minutes. You have no hope of even making this series competetive. Go back to crying in your Bill Wennington jerseys
Chris Sheridan (3:32 PM)
Chris, Come on, KG should have gotten the suspension and maybe more than one game. That was a blatant strike to the face. He wasnt trying to free himself, he was trying to hurt someone else....
Chris Sheridan (3:35 PM)
Are you sure your name is not Stu (NY)?
Thanks Chris, for using your chance to voice the facts on the Q-KG incident. I don't mind being consistent with the rulings on one violation, but it ought to consistent as regards each and every violation. Also, to the one who said Q wasn't making any hand gestures and what not, it was blatantly clear that he was up in KG's face, face-to-face to be exact.
Chris Sheridan (3:38 PM)
Here's the thing: What Q did worked to Miami's benefit (and to the writers' benefit with his "actresses" quote afterward.), and I could see a smart coach out there doing the same thing and using a stiff to provoke a superstar.
Academy Awards (Hollywood)
The award for best actor in a sporting event goes to.. Paul Pierce!
Chris Sheridan (3:39 PM)
In that case, the Academy stiffed Anderson Varejao and Jamal Crawford.
Word is that Portland is about to extend Marcus Camby for an additional two years for upwards of 20 mil. Like this move, or is this tying even more money up in a center with a history of injury issues?
Chris Sheridan (3:41 PM)
No, it is a sound move given Oden's injury history and the possibility that Joel P.'s career is done. Portland is capped out, so keeping Camby with the D.Miles money that is still on their cap for this season makes perfect sense. Now, if they can just get him to work on his breakaway dunks ...
Jennings. Stud. That's it.
Chris Sheridan (3:43 PM)
They need two guys to play the way he did in Game 1 to stay in that one, but they are a better 3-point shooting team than people realize, and Skiles is a wizard. Don't count them out.
John (Los Angeles)
Hey Chris, why is it that having a superstar pointguard hardly produces a ring? Nash, Kidd, Williams, Paul
Chris Sheridan (3:44 PM)
Tony Parker begs to differ. Remember, he was the Finals MVP against the Cavs.
I watched at least 1/2 of every game this weekend. The games out West are interesting, but can someone wake me up when Cleveland and Orlando are in the Eastern Conference finals. These first round Eastern Conference games are BORING....
Chris Sheridan (3:45 PM)
Gotta get through the Game 2s before you can make a blanket statement like that. The Bos-Mia game was excellent. The Celtics came back from 14 down in the third and won going away thanks to one bench player (Tony Allen) who had never contributed to a NBA playoff win in his life.
You picked LA in 7. After watching their first game yesterday, are you still liking your prediction? For me, the Lakers showed this series will be short and settled in 5 games.
Chris Sheridan (3:46 PM)
Kobe's shooting woes at home are too much of a concern for me. I still think OKC will push them to 7.
Sam (Russellville, AR)
The Lakers looked great yesterday! How far do you think they will get this year, and who is the X-factor? Personally, I think Artest stepping up and playing lock-down defense like he did last year for the Rockets will be necessary to contain Lebron and the Cavs. An outside mention would be Bynum being able to stay healthy.
Chris Sheridan (3:48 PM)
Both those things, and Fisher being able to hit open shots. But Artest on KD is the true MIF - Most Important Factor.
Brian (Logan Utah)
Who won between the clipplers and new york(utah) for the eight slot in the draft?
Chris Sheridan (3:49 PM)
Knicks won that one. Utah has one less ping-pong ball combination.
Zoey (Duarte, CA)
What do you think about the rumor that Mark Jackson wants to coach the Clippers?
Chris Sheridan (3:50 PM)
I know Mark wants to coach, but I prefer he stays with ESPN because he has really grown into his broadcasting job and ain't afraid to tell it like it is.
Albert (New York, NY)
Does this instance of instigating a fight (feat. Q rich and KG) have a greater implication than the one a few years ago when Robert Horry intentionally crashed into Nash, causing Amare to be suspended the next game for leaving the bench?
Chris Sheridan (3:52 PM)
That one happened much deeper in the playoffs and had a huge impact on the series. This one is a blip by comparison.
Matt (Puyallup, WA)
Chris...NBA in SEATTLE...talk to me.
Chris Sheridan (3:54 PM)
Your best hope right now is for the Nets sale to fall through, but Stern said Friday he expects the deal to close before the draft even if Ratner hasn't taken possession of all the land he needs for the Atlantic Yards project.
I went to the Lakers game yesterday and am not nearly as confident as some others in this chat....Westbrook can take our PGs all day and Durant seemed off on his shot more than anything else....
Chris Sheridan (3:56 PM)
Agreed. But I think it is imperative that OKC wins Game 2, cuz Phil Jackson's teams have a ridiculously high success rate (blv is it above 90 pct) when they play a game 3 after going up 2-0 in a series.
If you're Larry Brown, do you try to do what you did in game 1 and limit Dwight while being vulnerable from the three-point line, or do you let Dwight score 30 and contest all of the threes? Can Orlando really hit that high a percentage from outside all series?
Chris Sheridan (4:00 PM)
Gotta keep fouling Dwight and do a better job contesting 3s. LB's strategy is to make someone other than Dwight beat them.
Chris Sheridan (4:00 PM)
That's a wrap for today folks. Enjoy the games this week. Chatatcha again next Monday.
