Pierre LeBrun (4:01 PM)
Greetings from Detroit, where Hockeytown is low on morale today.Wow, lots of questions in the queue already. Will do my best people ! let's go !
Patrick (SF, CA)
Hi Pierre, watching Game 2 and 3 of the Sharks-Wings series, I've noticed that the refs have thrown more guys out of the face-off circle, and had more false-starts on dropped pucks than normal. Has the league directed the officials to look for specific things on face-offs? Any other reason for this?
Pierre LeBrun (4:03 PM)
I don't think there's been a league directive per say but I think come playoff time the linesmen know how important faceoffs are, especially with two teams like the Sharks and Wings where puck possession is the name of the game.
Pierre LeBrun (4:05 PM)
By the way, listening to Canadian rock legend Neil Young's greatest hits while I do this chat.''There is a town in Nothern Ontario ..."
Mike T. Chicago IL [via mobile]
Have any teams ever come back from being down 3-0 in a series?
Pierre LeBrun (4:06 PM)
1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 New York Islanders.Interestingly, Wings senior vice-president Jimmy Devellano was reminding me today that he was the assistant GM on that '75 Islanders team that erases a 3-0 deficit vs. the Pitt Penguins...
Pierre, if you were a betting man, how upset do you think Bettman would be to see a Montreal/Vancouver final, that result would just destroy his whole expand the game state side train of thought over the past 20 years since no one Americans t.v viewing wise (outside of maybe 1-2 million diehard hockey fans) would care about the finals.
Pierre LeBrun (4:09 PM)
Honestly Travis, I think a lot of fans have bizarre notions about what Bettman or the NHL wants or doesn't want... While I don't agree with everything Bettman has ever done, I can tell you for a fact he honestly doesn't care which teams end up in the Cup finals. I know we're sensitive souls in Canada, but fans in the Great White North have to stop thinking the league doesn't want them in the Cup finals.
Kris Letang (Pittsburgh, PA)
Bonjour Pierre. Now the Flyers are complaining about a biting incident!?! GIVE ME A BREAK. Doesn't anybody remember the Hartnell "La-Fang on Letang" incident from October?
Pierre LeBrun (4:09 PM)
I remember you were missing some flesh from it ! hahaha
Miroslav Satan (Boston, MA)
Pierre, I guess all that early season practice in a Long Island men's league really paid off!!! I get a Stanley Cup, a spot in the Olympics, a double OT playoff goal, a series clinching goal and now a top six spot for the Bruins in the second round. I guess the hockey gods believe in good karma after I did the classy thing and accepted a trip to the minors last year so the Pens could acquire Bill Guerin.
Pierre LeBrun (4:10 PM)
playing in the Olympics certainly didn't hurt help you get up to speed, either
Who do you think will coach the blue jackets
Pierre LeBrun (4:12 PM)
Ryan, I'm sure you've seen all the guys on their short list so I wont' bother listing them all. Some good choices all around. I think Kevin Dineen should be considered a contender, as well as Scott Arniel. Wings assistant coach Paul Maclean should also get a look and I'm real high on him. He'd be a great hiren in my opinion.
Charles (Sunny in California)
Hasn't this postseason been one of the better in recent memories? Great long and hard fought first round series that had two game 7's with one turning into a huge first round upset. The second round has been jsut as good with all of the games being decided late in the 3rd or OT. The ratings are up and the play has been awesome. Is it time for hockey to finally get back on ESPN so coverage can expland?
Pierre LeBrun (4:13 PM)
Rivetting playoffs. Nothing to complain about. And hey, there's lots of hockey coverage on ESPN.com !!!!
Aman (San Jose, CA)
How about them Sharks? After the Sharks found out they would be playing the Red Wings, I watched all of the 'haters' say Detroit was going to handle San Jose in 5 or 6 games. I don't blame them based on San Jose's playoff history, but this is a totally different team out there. And who knows, maybe this is THE year they win it all?
Pierre LeBrun (4:15 PM)
Guess me picking the Sharks every September for 3 straight years might finally make me look smart? LOL.It's been fun to watch. I know a lot of the people in and around the organization and they've gone through a lot. But it's not over yet with Detroit :)
David B (Chicago, IL)
Through eight postseason games this year, I think Patrick Sharp has to be team MVP for the Blackhawks (just edging Brent Sopel). He scores in the clutch, seems to find areas behind defensemen on the attack, and can switch easily between center and wing. Do you believe he will still be in Chicago next fall, or will the team's cap issues force Bowman to deal him away?
Pierre LeBrun (4:17 PM)
agreed on Sharp, he's been tremendous. Tough to say what will happen this summer. Obviously some bodies have to be dumped to make room. The big thing is if they can dump Huet's $5.625-million cap hit. Either in the AHL or trade him to a team like Toronto and throw in a valuable asset like Versteeg in exchange for the Leafs taking on that kind of $$$$ in Huet... Just a theory on my part, not something that I believe is in the works whatsoever
Timmy G. (Fresno, CA)
What is the deal with the Sharks coverage on ESPN? It seems like Barnaby is the only guy who predicted they win this series, and I'm not seeing guys like E.J. Hradek saying anything about the Sharks performance since he predicted Detroit wins in five games while Barry is telling him he has no respect for the Sharks. I hope some people go to the Joe and bring brooms on Thursday. Maybe E.J. Should have to wave a broom if the Sharks sweep Detroit. What do you think?
Pierre LeBrun (4:18 PM)
Timmy, honestly are you asking ME that? Sure I picked Detroit in seven games, but I'm the guy that's picked the Sharks to win the Cup in three consecutive Septembers !!!!!!!!!
Dave (North Carolina)
Are the Bruins setting me up for a huge let down or is the team everyone thought they would be before the season started?
Pierre LeBrun (4:20 PM)
Really tough for me to answer because I've been doing Western Conference playoffs exclusively since the start of the playoffs... Tough tohave a deep rooted opinion from watching a few time zones away on TV but I think overall their defensive game under Julien and Rask's play are huge components right now
As it stands now it looks like San Jose will make it to the conference finals this year. Do you see either Chicago or Vancouver as a threat to them?
Pierre LeBrun (4:25 PM)
Definitely a threat. Vancouver and Chicago are serious Cup contenders just like San Jose. Flip a coin !
Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)
Pierre, which is the better NHL commercial campaign....this year's "History Will Be Made" with all the classic highlights in reverse or last year's "Cup Raise" with the mosaic of all the still shots of the cup being raised over history? Have you seen any of the "History Will Be Made" parodies on youtube, some of them are hilarious such "what if Fraser wasn't blind" on the Gretzky-Gilmour high stick in '93.
Pierre LeBrun (4:27 PM)
Those adds have been tremendous, Jesse. Love watching 'em. Would love to see a Leafs Stanley Cup one but there's none available in color, only black and white TV film :)
Kenny (New Jersey)
Pierre, after giving up that 3rd goal last night against SJ, wouldn't you say it's time for everyone on the Jimmy Howard Hype Train to come back down to Earth?
Pierre LeBrun (4:28 PM)
I thought he struggled last night, no question, but he was darn good late in the Phoenix series. Like any other young player, the playoffs are a learning ground. Just ask pavel datsyuk about his early playoff years
Josh (Lake Nashville)
Do you think the Wings look to get younger next year, or do you see them staying pat and signing an aging veteran a la Bertuzzi? Do they have the depth in their farm system to go young?
Pierre LeBrun (4:29 PM)
I think the return of Hudler from Russia means Bertuzzi (UFA) is gone
Steve Yzerman (Detroit, MI)
Now does everyone see why I didn't even consider Mike Green for team Canada? Hey Greener, good penalty on the first goal and good defensive effort on the Moore goal in Game 7; maybe you should stick to car insurance commercials..
Pierre LeBrun (4:30 PM)
Don'tthink there's much for me to add to that :)
hey pierre huge fan, I wish the other sports had writers as good as you, Scott, and Bucci; could you please rank the remaining teams left in terms of chances they have to win the Stanley Cup as of today?
Pierre LeBrun (4:32 PM)
Thanks lexie.My rankings:1. three-way tie SJ, Van and Chi4. Detroit5. Pitt6. Boston7. Philly8. MontrealOh wait, am I showing my Western Conference bias ! :)
Who wins the Hart?
Pierre LeBrun (4:34 PM)
my first-place vote on the official NHL ballott went to Henrik Sedin.my second-place vote went to Sidney Crosby
Todd (San Jose)
Pierre, do you want to rethink your pick on how many games Detroit is going to win in their series?
Pierre LeBrun (4:35 PM)
Well I said 7 games so that's the right number of games if Detroit wins, right? :)
Pierre---care to redo your final four
Pierre LeBrun (4:35 PM)
I. Kovalchuk (Newark, NJ)
OK be straight with me...no one is going to offer me even half what Atlanta did during the season are they? Man I really messed this up.
Pierre LeBrun (4:36 PM)
some sucker probably will
Boom Boom (Boston, MA)
Pierre, why do you hate the Bruins?
Pierre LeBrun (4:38 PM)
LOL... I think I'm going to use this as a chance to vent:People in my job don't ''hate" teams. We are paid to give opinions. Some fans are hilarious. One fan after the first round demanded ''an apology" for picking against his team. Say what ???????It's our job to pick winners, to have an opinion. We don't cheer for teams, we have no vested interest either way. So calm down !
If the B's win tonight, is this series over?
Pierre LeBrun (4:38 PM)
Sharks Faithful (Silicon Valley)
Should we start planning the parade route? Seriously impressed with the backbone and persistence the boys are showing this year. No way last year's team wins that game last night. And props to Nabby. He's outplayed both Anderson and Howard to this point. Hope he has 9 more in the tank.
Pierre LeBrun (4:39 PM)
You should be impressed. The Sharks are shedding their image right now. These are exciting times for Sharks fans.
Pierre LeBrun (4:40 PM)
ok cool cats, have to jump on a phone interview with Quebec French sports network.Until next week !
