Red Bull X Fighters Egypt
On Thursday, ESPN FMX editor Ryan Leyba is answering your questions about this weekend's Red Bull X Fighters Egypt. There's no shortage of stories going into the second stop of freestyle motocross's most important tour: Can Andre Villa maintain or extend his lead? Can Maddison finally contend for an overall victory? Where's Bilko?
You have questions, Leyba has answers. Chat begins at 2 p.m. ET Thursday.
Ryan Leyba (2:00 PM)
Alright, it's go time. 2 p.m. on the dot. Thanks for tuning in. Let's talk moto, bro!
Stuart (Madison, WI)
Why doesn't Pastrana do X Fighters anymore???
Ryan Leyba (2:03 PM)
Yo Stuart. Honestly, if Travis Pastrana started hitting the ramps again and focusing on FMX, he could undoubtedly have a good chance at winning an X-Fighters. But, he's on to bigger and better things -- Rally car racing being one of those -- and of course his new Nitro Circus Live tour that just kicked off in Australia. Plus he's got a lot of dating to catch up on...
greg hartman (by an old jukebox)
Do you think there will be tricks at the X Games?
Ryan Leyba (2:05 PM)
Hello Mr. Greg, Long time no talk doggy! You know, I think that FMX is coming full circle. Tricks are so 2009. I'm predicting FMX at X Games will be full of whips, visor grinds and sticker kickers (weak nac nacs.)
Yuri (Barcelona, Spain)
Can Danny Torres win this one?
Ryan Leyba (2:08 PM)
YURI!That's a rad name. Of course Dany Torres can win in Egypt. While everyone's been training in So Cal, Dany's been in the cut in Spain, just killing his foam pit. We also know that Dany's got huge tricks, and if a rider is comfortable on landing ramps (not too sure if Dany is), then they can be the perfect place to throw the banger tricks.
does this work?
Ryan Leyba (2:09 PM)
Yes Amy, it does work. Just grab a drink and chill and it should start autoupdating. Don't manually refresh it.
Why aren't they doing a X Fighters in Dallas Ft. Worth anymore? those were sick!
Ryan Leyba (2:12 PM)
Yo Frankdeezle, I honestly don't know why Texas has been taken from the schedule. I went last year and it was an amazing even with Sinclair pulling the dub flip and Thomas Pages going for the front flip. Not to mention it was a sold out crowd. Maybe the local cows ate the dirt after the event and got poisoned from all the toxins left by the dirt bikes. But, probably not.
Moto Chick (In the Dirt)
When are we gonna see you backflip??????
Ryan Leyba (2:14 PM)
Gretchen,Yes, I did claim the backflip during my "comeback," but I've got to tell you ... if there's one thing I regret it's that. No, but honestly, I finally have health insurance and I've been hitting the diet hard, so it's very possible that you could see me get upside down in 2010. I HAVE to do it before Destin Cantrell.. hahha
Jill Kettner (Kansas City)
I heard that the course is made up of two portable ramp setups. Is that true?
Ryan Leyba (2:17 PM)
Jilly Jilly McJillster! Yeah, actually the course is made of two standard take-off ramps and two make-shift landing ramps. Supposedly the Egyptian government wouldn't let Red Bull move any dirt due to the site being protected. Could you imagine if they were building a landing and dug up a mummy? Actually, that would be pretty sick. Give that thing a Red Bull and it'd probably come to life. Sugar Free of course...
Big fan of ESPN FMX. What's up with Bilko?
Ryan Leyba (2:21 PM)
Ursula, thanks for being a fan of ESPN FMX. As for Bilko, he's back in Australia riding the new Nitro Circus Live tour. The first show went down this past weekend in Brisbane and it was absolutely sick. It's too bad that Bilko's not riding Egypt because we all know that out of all the riders, he's the gnarliest when it comes to not caring about crashing. I can guarantee you that he'd pull off a top three finish if he were there. But he's probably making mad loot in Australia.
Davie (Bakersfield CA)
how come Nate Adams hasn't won one of these things in so long? he used to dominate that stuff.
Ryan Leyba (2:23 PM)
Davie! Representing Bako! Nate did win the last round of the 2009 series in London, England, so really he's still killing it. He got second at the first round in Mexico City and I know that's he's been hitting the ramps hard in between events, so he could win in Egypt, but honestly, I'm picking Levi Sherwood for the win ... hands down.
CB Buckner (Home)
What's the craziest thing you've seen done in midair? I'm not talkin' double backflips, I wanna hear about a naked Cordova or something.
Ryan Leyba (2:26 PM)
CB in the place to be. I actually keep things pretty mellow on the bike, but our boy Todd Potter has been a bit out of control lately. We're talking full-on backflips without a helmet. Come to think of it, if you saw "The Body Issue" of ESPN the Magazine, you may've seen Nixey Danielson pulling a flip in nothing but a pair of whitey tighties. Dudes nuts and NO, we do not condone flipping in whitey tighties ... or wearing them for that matter.
Adam (Cairo )
hey! whats up? cant wait ot come tomorrow night and check you guys out! sounds like a lot of fun!
Ryan Leyba (2:28 PM)
Yo Adam, unfortunately I won't be there, but I do know that the guys put in a solid practice session last night and everything is going smooth. We'll be posting up a few photos in a few minutes and you'll trip the heck out. You're in for a treat Adam!
Sheckler Heckler (L.A.)
Who the baddest boy in FMX? How about the nicest guy?
Ryan Leyba (2:32 PM)
Yo Sheckler Heckler, nice name. Currently, I'd have to say the baddest boy in FMX is Todd Potter. Without a doubt. From the stories I hear, I'm going to have to award that to him. The nicest guy? Man, I've got to tell you, the Japanese dudes are nice beyond belief. Both Taka Higashino and Eigo Sato. Very cool dudes.
would travis p still contend with the top guys if he came back for the tour
Ryan Leyba (2:35 PM)
Yo Bert, where's Ernie? No, but seriously, as much as people hate on Pastrana, I really do think that he could come back and dominate the sport if he put 110% of his effort into it. I mean, the judges love him and his tall, lanky frame makes his tricks look sick. But he'll never come back, he's making too much loot with his Nitro Circus dealyo.
Do the old school Mulisha dudes look back on the days of spiked shoulder pads and get embarrassed?
Ryan Leyba (2:37 PM)
Honestly, I can't speak for them, but I'd guess not. I mean, back then you can't tell me that you weren't pumped on what those dudes were doing. They're probably more embarrassed about saying they'd never sell out and then do the opposite. But let's face it, they're still the dopest FMX team around.
you're my absolute favorite rider. i loved your performance in the winter x-games. do you think you will ever ride again? i'd love to see the kiss of death make a come back!!
Ryan Leyba (2:40 PM)
Killerkitty23!!! Thanks for the props. Unfortunately I'm old, fat and washed up now, but hey ... it happens, right? Will I ever ride again? Well, if my mom and girlfriend have their way, i'll never make eye contact with a dirt bike again, but they'll probably be disappointed because I'm sure I'll be hitting the ramps again some time soon ... shhhhh!
Belky Ramirez (Austin, Texas)
I love the kiss of death! Are your kisses really deadly? ;)
Ryan Leyba (2:43 PM)
I'm glad you like the kiss of death, but i'm sorry to burst your bubble, my kisses are in fact not deadly. It was actually Mad Mike Jones who named that trick and I'm going to guess that his kisses are indeed deadly.
El Dedo (NYC, Baby!)
What do you think about Eigo Sato's new "Airplane" air? It's cool to see a new trick that doesn't involve a flip, twist, or body varial ...
Ryan Leyba (2:46 PM)
Ed Dedo burrito con cheetoh! Wow, are there really FMX fans in NYC? Let's hook up, rent some scooters and go shred the streets of Manhattan! And as for Eigo's new trick, I think it's insanely sick. I swear that guy keeps getting better with age. And the thing I love about all his tricks is that he puts his own twist on them and has crazy extension. I'm actually surprised nobody's ever came up with the idea for the Aeroplane before, but I bet you'll be seeing a lot of riders pulling it soon. Aeroplane backflip? You never know!
Do you think Villa has it in him to win all X Fighters stops?
Ryan Leyba (2:51 PM)
Hisssssssy fit!I really really want to believe that Andre will win every stop because if anyone deserves it, it's him. But with the talent running so deep in the field of riders, it's going to be really hard for him. And yeah, I'm not scared to admit it ... I have a bit of a man crush on Mr. Villa. You DO know that he was voted Norway's sexiest man by GQ magazine, right?
Level with me: Will anybody ever pull of a triple backflip on a dirt bike?
Ryan Leyba (2:52 PM)
Yes Dale, you WILL see a triple backflip on a dirtbike and I wouldn't be surprised if it was Cam Sinclair who took it there. He's gnarlier than Todd Potter's chest hair.
leyba how did you get such a cool job like this?
Ryan Leyba (2:54 PM)
Well Mark, I went to two community colleges for .75 years, learned how to use my homerow keys, I had my mom make me a resume and BAM!
Ryan Leyba (2:57 PM)
Ite ite, five minutes left until I have to go back to blogging in my deluxe cubical. Any more questions?
Ryan Leyba (3:01 PM)
Thanks for dropping in on this chatty mc chatster. It's been fun. Be sure to stay logged onto ESPN.com/Action tomorrow and all weekend as we'll be bringing you all the latest from Egypt. PEACE!
