Bruce (1:01 PM)
Greetings from Vancouver, BC... Had the best sushi I've ever had last night at Tojo. Anyhow, excited to talk some CF today.
Bruce, your thoughts on the Tide and a chance at a repeat for 2010?
Bruce (1:03 PM)
It's so hard to repeat, but Bama is my preseason #1. Lots to like on offense, great coaching and the D which has many to replace, still has talent (Barron, Hightower, Dareus, Chapman, Milliner, etc)... plus UF will take a step back this fall because it lost key leaders on both sides of the ball.
Robert Conner (Savannah GA)
Easy one for you. Arron Murray has 3500 YP, 15TD's, 4 INT's, 50% completion%, and 400 yards rushing. What would you say UGA's record would be?
Bruce (1:05 PM)
Really does depend on how much better the new def. staff can get their side of things, but if he goes 15-4 and 3500 yds, I'd guess at 10-2.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What is your favorite NFL team if you follow the NFL?
Bruce (1:06 PM)
Grew up a Steelers fan, but I like the Ravens most right now.. I really root for the players and coaches I've gotten to know from their college days.
Which matchup would you prefer to see more in the last Big XII title game: a rematch between the Cornhuskers and Longhorns, or an epic end to the Nebraska v. Oklahoma rivalry?
Bruce (1:07 PM)
Both would be great, but the backroom politics of UT-Neb would be a bit spicier, although that doesn't affect what the players do on the field.
Meat Market is a must read and now is the time to read it, during the slow sports scehdule. What is the latest news on former USC commit Seantrel Henderson? Is he coming to the U and if so, how much can he contribute immediately? Thanks.
Bruce (1:12 PM)
Thanks. I don't have any update this morning. From what I've been told by a source UM hadn't heard yet from the Henderson family a day after the announcement of the release. (Initially, USC annoucned the release, but as of that night, an official release hadn't been signed yet.)Depends on what kind of condition Henderson reports in. Is he up to 345 and ready to compete in the humidity of a training camp? Other freshmen are already working out in those college conditions. Talentwise, every coach I've asked about him said he's got great potential. Answers about his work ethic will come later.
Josh S. (Philly)
Can Penn State when the big ten this year?
Bruce (1:13 PM)
So much depends on how stable the QB play will be. My hunch is they're going to be a notch below OSU/Wisc/Iowa.
Conor (Santa Barbara)
Who is the signal caller for Oregon on September 11 in Knoxville, Darron Thomas or Nate Costa?
Bruce (1:13 PM)
Guessing it'll be Nate Costa because of his maturity. Both QBs sound like good leaders from what I've heard and both are athletic.
luke (dayton, ohio)
thoughts on notre dame football... specifically, do they have an opportunity to surprise some teams this year? where do you project them finishing this season?
Bruce (1:15 PM)
I'll say 9-3 or 10-2. The upgrade in coaching is so signficant. Running a college team is about so much more than just Xs and Os. It's having every person on the staff to be on the same page. That's what Kelly understands.
Bruce (1:16 PM)
I'll have a lot more on the ND transformation in the ESPN Mag CF preview. I spent a lot of time talking to folks inside and out about the Irish program.
Hey Bruce, do you have any thoughts on the Tennessee bar brawl?
Bruce (1:19 PM)
Sounds like a mess. I'd been following the reporting of it on Twitter. You have a lot of key players for the Vols future linked to it. You have Da'Rick Rogers, a huge recruit they beat UGA for. Darren Myles one of the best young players in the program and DT Montori Hughes who plays a position that UT desperately can't afford any attrition at. There's also been some eye-opening quotes from the bar owner talking about giving players "VIP" treatment that no doubt has the Dooley and the UT compliance people wincing. It'll be interesting to see what the fallout is.
Who are some new or unknown names from the PAC-10 that will have big year?
Bruce (1:24 PM)
I'll say RB Chris Polk at WSU; Akeem Ayers and Datone Jones at UCLA; DT Lawrence Guy at ASU (assuming that LB Vontaze Burfict is already a known guy) QB Ryan Katz at Oregon State; WR Jeff Maehl at Oregon. Not sure if people have forgot about how good USC CB Shareece Wright is, so I'd say him too.
Cole Thompson (Akron,OH)
Who do you think is going to be the best QB that can run the football? I think it will be Terrell Pryor.
Bruce (1:26 PM)
Pryor is at the top of the list with Robert Griffin, Josh Nesbitt and Colin Kaepnick I think. I'd say Griffin is the fastest and Nesbite is the toughest.
Bruce (1:26 PM)
Sorry.. Kaepernick and Nesbitt.
How about Zach Collaros for heisman? Surrounded by talent at skill positions & can run. I don't see a defense in the big east that can match up.
Bruce (1:28 PM)
He'll put up huge numbers because as you said he's got very good WRs, a good TE in Ben Guidugli and Isaiah Pead's a good RB. Plus new OC Mike Bajakian is one underrated really sharp offensive minds out there. Still, Collaros will be a huge longshot. The two best Heisman hopefuls in that league are Noel Devine and Dion Lewis.
Do you think QB Griffin will have a big year for Baylor, and how do you like their chances this year?
Bruce (1:29 PM)
If he's 100 percent, yes he will have a big year. They have a good shot to go bowling as long as he's healthy. They have more good players around him now too.
Hi Bruce, how can Lebron coming to Miami actually help swade kids to the U? Thanks!
Bruce (1:32 PM)
It's a subtle thing but whenever you're talking about the mindset of 17 year old recruits, they often get caught up in star appeal, and LeBron just made the city more attractive and even more of an event town. (Many recruits get turned off when they visit some places and say 'there's nothing to do or see there...') It's easy to be cynical about this stuff but I don't doubt it can resonate with many recruits.
Andrew (New Jersey)
Just curious of what your opinion would be on the punishment of the UT players. After reading into it i see Myles getting the boot and Rodgers getting suspension
Bruce (1:33 PM)
I think it's too see to predict until more of the facts come out.
do u think ponder has what it takes for a good run at the heisman?
Bruce (1:34 PM)
Yep, skilled triggerman behind a good, experienced O-line. He'll need more help from that D, but he's a legit candidate.
Can you explain why JRs are allowed to transfer from USC penalty free when the 2nd year of the bowl ban is stayed during appeal?
Bruce (1:35 PM)
It may be stayed but that doesn't mean overturned.
Alex (Gulf Shores Alabama)
Another question about unknown names: every year since Saban showed up at Alabama, there has been a starting true freshman to turn some heads (Donte Hightower, Julio Jones, Trent Richardson to name a few). Who should the SEC worry about this year in Ttown?
Bruce (1:37 PM)
I'll guess and say DeMarcus Milliner since he plays a need spot at CB.
Steve (Blacksburg, VA)
Bruce, I was in Vancouver for the Olympics! What are you there for?
Bruce (1:38 PM)
Vacation.. that's why this chat will be shorter than normal and there's no Friday mailbag today for the blog.
Polk goes to UW not WSU.
Bruce (1:38 PM)
Sorry, typing too fast.
After the sanctions with USC are over, and Mike Garrett retires, how long before he ends up heading an NCAA sanctions committee?
Bruce (1:39 PM)
I am thinking a bowl game for Duke in 2011...agree?
Bruce (1:40 PM)
It may sound crazy but I think it could be. I know they're really young and have some nice young players making an impact now.
What has happened to Joe Jarboe, the one-time Oklahoma recruit?
Bruce (1:40 PM)
Josh Jarboe's at Troy. I thought I read online that he had a good spring.
Since your up in the Northwest, who has the best shot from the Northwest to win the Heisman? Locker, Moore, Quizz, or James?
Bruce (1:43 PM)
I'll say Quizz or James because I think they'll be on teams that win enough. If I had to pick one of that group I'll say Quizz has the best shot.
Bruce (1:43 PM)
three more questions...
Speaking of missing recruits, what happened to Willie Downs? He had a great game at the Army event.
Bruce (1:45 PM)
Signed with FSU but didn't stay there, went to a Miss JC and played some but left and I'd heard he was at a Cali JC and impressing people as a DB prospect in spring evals.
Dan (Charlotte, NC)
Could we see a TE have a shot at the Heisman with Kyle Rudoplh at ND?
Bruce (1:46 PM)
No, very good player, but if he were to be in the discussion that'd mean Dayne Crist is getting the Heisman talk.
Was the sushi expensive? Thanks for chatting during your vacation!
Bruce (1:48 PM)
Yes, it was but it was highly recommended by both a buddy from EA and Joe Tessitore. Probably the most expensive meal without alcohol I've had in a while. The food was outstanding.
disappointed u didn't answer none my question but no hard feelings
Bruce (1:48 PM)
send it again.. I didn't see them.
Mark (Dublin, Ireland)
Bruce, with two potential first team All-Americans on defense- Adrian Clayborn and Tyler Sash, a senior quarterback, as well as all returning Running Backs and Wideouts, and an always-solid O-Line, why does no one seem to talk about Iowa as a possible NCAA title team, or even the Big Ten Champs?
Bruce (1:49 PM)
They do talk about it, plus they have the best sked of the top three preseason favs in the conference.
Josh (Laramie, WY)
2nd year in the Christensen system... do you think U of Wyo has a chance to get into the top 3 of the MWC this year? Picked up a couple of receiver transfers that have the speed to make the spread work, plus reports of the players being a lot stronger and faster this year (plus a better work ethic)... I think there is a chance they can knock off Air Force and BYU and be at least 3rd.
Bruce (1:50 PM)
Impressed by what he's done so far there. Still to get third in that league would really surprise me.
Louisville has really dropped. How will they be this year and beyond?
Bruce (1:51 PM)
Need a lot more help on the offensive skill positions. Heard Charlie Strong is recruiting well, but it's going to take some time. Am curious to see how Demar Dorsey does there.
i just want to know Bruce, what kinda of message will usc be sending if they go undefeated this season or even if they lose one game and win the pac-10..how will other big programs take it or respond...thank you
Bruce (1:53 PM)
The approach Kiffin is preaching to them is "Us against the world".. I think they have the talent to win a lot of games and keep in mind all of their toughest opponents come to LA this year. Not sure about the part about how other big programs take it... I doubt they like Lane and company, win or lose.
How much warmer did Mark Richt's seat get at UGA?
Bruce (1:54 PM)
Good question. He has to get them going again, but I think much of that pressure was there before the Evans mess.
John (Happy Valley)
Bruce, Re: the Miami being a hotbed because of LeBron comment... in the same vein maybe it's not a coincidence that one of TV's most popular shows from 1984 - 1991 was named "Miami Vice." The 'Canes won titles in '87, '89, and '91... Maybe the Hollywood factor helps USC?!...
Bruce (1:55 PM)
The Hollywood factor certainly helps USC much as what you said about Miami. There is a "cool" factor that can sway a lot of kids.
Who is the BCS buster this season?(Besides Boise)
Bruce (1:56 PM)
TCU or Utah. Longer shot: Houston.
Bruce (1:57 PM)
Thanks for all the questions, going out to do a hike. If I didn't get to your question, send it to me via Twitter at BFeldmanESPN.
