beano cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. This is our July chat and the next one will be in late August, probably the 25th, which is just before my 79th birthday. A lot going on as of late. We welcome Pat Haden from the broadcast booth to a nice desk job as AD at USC...he also inherits a big mess. As for who will replace Haden in the booth, it will be either Tim Brown or Joe Theismann. It doesn't matter who does the ND games on NBC, they are nothing more than s four-hour infomercial. When the band plays the victory march, I want complete silence. Ready for your questions.
Is there a way for the NCAA to do a better job policing these kids breaking rules and getting stuff from agents?
beano cook (3:07 PM)
In my opinion, getting $100,000 in late December is no great sin. What can Florida do and what can the NCAA do? The agent probably convinced Pouncey would put him in the 28 percent tax bracket. Now he is in a higher bracket. Plus Florida has no state income tax.
beano cook (3:09 PM)
By the way, the NCAA has bigger problems than this. Nick Saban wants to shut off the NFL from coming to the colleges. That is pure nonsense. Let's face it, Saban is still mad that he was 15-17 in the NFL and took the easy way out. By the way, I am a Nick Saban fan.
Benny (Somewhere over the rainbow)
Do you forsee any possible sanctions resulting from NCAA investigations at UNC, USC, Florida? Also, is any of those schools already under probation at this time?
beano cook (3:10 PM)
The situations at South Carolina and North Carolina are different, that was a party and we have to see if rules were broken. As for Florida, nothing should be done as of now. Let's wait and see what happens before rushing to judgment.
Beanoooooo! Hey man, welcome to the almost college football season party. Looks like a 2007 year for the Gators, very fast offense with quick strike ability but young defense with a lot to learn. How far do you think Brantley and Demps can carry this team? SEC Champs?
beano cook (3:12 PM)
If I had to pick a team from the SEC East to play for the title, I would pick the Gators. Florida is the favorite in that division and anything can happen in a conference title game. A rematch of Alabama-Florida would be entertaining. The Gators also play only three conference road games this season.
Beano, getting to be that exciting time of the year when optimism is at it's all-time high. Some buddies of mine are planning annual weekend trips to various college football sites. What places would you say are must see?
beano cook (3:13 PM)
Army on the third weekend in October. A night game at LSU. Any game at Ohio State. The Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville. If you like the victory march, go to South Bend.
Hi Beano - do you think UTAH and COLORADO have rough seasons in this "lame duck" year?
beano cook (3:15 PM)
It is hard to say. I don't think so. I know when they go on the road, they will get a hostile reception, though not as bad as Nebraska.
Alex (Happy Valley)
How many more years for Joe Pa, Mr. Cook?
beano cook (3:17 PM)
I get that question every year. As long as his health is OK he will coach. We all know Penn State wanted Rutgers in the Big Ten instead of Nebraska because of obvious reasons. I will make a prediction: Nebraska's first Big Ten game will be at night in Lincoln against Ohio State. Another prediction, Lakers vs. Heat in LA on Christmas Day.
Don (Houston, Texas)
How about some love for QB Case Keenum of the Cougars?
beano cook (3:17 PM)
I would take him to a Broadway play if I could get tickets to South Pacific. He is a legit Heisman candidate based on his performance last year.
ND FAN (Illinois)
HEY BEANO:Worst/Best case scenarios for the irish record wise? THANKS
beano cook (3:19 PM)
I think their worst case scenario would be 7-5. I feel they will win nine games, but I said that the last three seasons. However, if Notre Dame doesn't have a good season, I don't want to hear anything about lack of material or tough academics.
Hi Beano;I've been a fan of College Football all my life, but since I've retired I read more and pay closer attention to off the field stuff. It seems to me that no team is immune to recruiting thugs these days. Players are arrested for some violent crime on a daily basis. My question; has it always been this way? or is it a new generational/societal phenomenon?
beano cook (3:21 PM)
It hasn't always been this way. Players have always gotten into trouble, but not like it has been the last 15 years. Part of it is the media exposure... you have more people reporting on players getting into trouble. More players get into trouble today than they used to, and that is a fact.
Maxwell (Ocala, Fl)
Hey Beano what do you expect from Jimbo Fisher and my beloved Noles this season? I can see 9-10 wins and a shot to win the ACC. also CP7 Heisman?
beano cook (3:23 PM)
Let's start the season before we start talking about the Heisman. Years ago, people didn't start talking about the Heisman until October. This year, after the November elections, we will start hearing about the next New Hampshire primary! As for Florida State, there will be an adjustment from Bowden to Fisher, as well as Mickey Andrews. Let's see what happens. I think the Seminoles should win at least eight games.
Chad (Chicago, IL)
Beano -- thoughts on the job Pat Fitzgerald is doing at Northwestern/prediction for the season? And don't try to claim he'd ever leave Evanston -- Fitz BLEEDS Purple!
beano cook (3:25 PM)
If you say he is never going to leave there, then you must be right. He will never win a national championship there and I can't believe he doesn'r care at all about winning a title. He has done a solid job there and loyalty is nice, but never say never.
Daniel (Sherman Oaks, CA)
Hi King Beano. I have some tickets for you to the Indians/Royals game if you answer my question. How many wins does Rich Rod need this year to survive at Michigan? What's your prediction on Michigan's record this fall?
beano cook (3:27 PM)
I would say that he needs at least eight. If he goes 6-6 he will be done. 7-5 will be interesting. He will definitely lose at Notre Dame and Ohio State. I predict 3-1 in non-league, so he will have to win five Big Ten games to survive. As for Indians-Royals, I was actually hoping to the Orioles.
beano cook (3:27 PM)
It is too bad I couldn't see an Orioles-Pirates game in September...that would be compelling drama.
Billy Goat (Chicago)
If a middle tier team from Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12, ACC (eg Michigan St, Northwestern, Oregon St, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, etc) were to pull off an amazing run and go undefeated this season, will they be ranked ahead of undefeated Boise St at the end of the regular season? Thanks Beano!
beano cook (3:30 PM)
I am assuming that you are saying Boise State beats Va. Tech and Oregon State to be in the national championship picture. I have to think if a Big Ten team goes undefeated and has a couple of good non-league wins, they would probably be past Boise State. I guess an example would be if Michigan State went undefeated, they probably would be ahead of Boise State. I am not saying that they should be, but I would guess that they would be.
Jean P. (Jay) Bodet,sr. (Metairie, Louisiana)
Was watching your SEC program and Feel that the "agents" who break the rules should be banned from representing any athlete. The athlete , if they are awarded a professional contract and has broken the rule( Reggie Bush) should be liable for the harm that they have done. That should be a clause in their scolarship given them by the school they attend. They walk away from it and the school take it in the neck.
beano cook (3:31 PM)
Your observation is noted.
Chad (Chicago, IL)
Never win a national championship at Northwestern? Isn't that a big presumptuous? They entered the 1996 Rose Bowl ranked #3 in the nation (meaning it isn't unprecedented), they play in the Big Ten (where if you were to go undefeated, you're almost guaranteed a BCS shot), are near Chicago (meaning plenty of media attention)....plus, Coach K at Duke has shown that you can win national titles at a school with academic standards.
beano cook (3:33 PM)
That's basketball. It is different than football and I stand by my statement. I am not going to say it could never be done, but I would bet anybody any amount of money that it would not be done at Northwestern in the next 30 years. By the way, Northwestern did lose in the Rose Bowl to USC.
Rick (Los Angeles)
How do you feel Rick Neuheisel will do at UCLA this season?
beano cook (3:34 PM)
You have to think they will be better. It is only a matter of time before they have a big year. The Bruins certainly have athletes. You know USC should slip a little, which would help UCLA.
Beano so who will be Michigan's coach next year?
beano cook (3:36 PM)
If there is a change, I would hire Al Golden from Temple. I don't know if the Big Ten has an unwritten rule about hiring a coach from within the league, but Pat Fitzgerald would be a good choice.
why does bush get his heisman back?
beano cook (3:36 PM)
That is not up to me. The Heisman Trust hasn't made a final decision yet anyway.
Hi Beano,How well do you think Lane and Haden will work together at USC?
beano cook (3:37 PM)
Pat Haden will make it clear who is charge. USC picked a good man. That was the right decision.
beano, does it bother you that a one loss sec champ could be left out of a bcs title game if boise st and one other bcs program goes unbeaten considering the sec is the best conference?
beano cook (3:39 PM)
Number one, that is why you have to have a plus-one game. I think that will happen after the 2014 season. I originally thought we would have it after 2010, but I was wrong. The scenario you established is very possible. Alabama and Florida could have one loss and be out of the title game. There would be some screaming in SEC country if that happens.
beano cook (3:40 PM)
It is ridiculous that the BCS doesn't already have a plus-one game.
Which is more awkward - Boise State's visit to WAC venues this fall or Lebron's visit to his slighted cities this winter?
beano cook (3:41 PM)
I would say LeBron's reception in Cleveland will be a lot more hostile. I know a lot of people in WAC country are unhappy about Boise leaving, but burning jersies in Cleveland...wow.
In your lifetime, has Vandy ever had more players than Tennesseeon the ALL SEC 1st team like they do this year? I don't the Vols getting more than 4 wins this year, do you?
beano cook (3:44 PM)
Tennessee will have more than four wins this season. They will lose to Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Thinking about the schedule, maybe you are right...Tough situation at Vandy with coach Johnson resigning so late. It is nearly impossible to win consistently in football at Vandy.
Beano, in all your years what was the single greatest memory you have of a college football game you attended?
beano cook (3:45 PM)
Oh boy. I have to think about that. My first Army-Navy game in 1948 comes to mind right away. Going to Ohio State in 1952. There are so many great memories...Michigan State-Notre Dame famous 10-10 tie ranks up there.
Beano--while I usually enjoy your comments, it amazes me that people consider you a "homer" for Notre Dame...evidence is the shot that you took in the introduction today (NBC being a 4 hour infomercial, etc.)...I am surprised that you didn't throw in your usual comment that you are shocked that they haven't won a championship since 1989...on the other hand, I think Pat Haden is a great hire for USC...your thoughts and thanks.
beano cook (3:48 PM)
Number one, they won a national championship in 1988. I like to stick the needle into Notre Dame and NBC's coverage of it. I like to have some fun. I respect the Notre Dame tradition. I resent the sanctimonious attitude that they have. They never fail to point out a player who could not get into Notre Dame, who plays well against them.
HERB (ANN ARBOR)
Why do you think Michigan has fallen so far so fast?
beano cook (3:49 PM)
Things happen. Michigan is a great program capable of bouncing back. Others have had a few bad years and responded.
ND FAN (illinois)
BEANO: Who is/was the best game day coach you ever saw?
beano cook (3:50 PM)
John McKay at USC.
Why do none of the CF analysts speak about how Missy Conboy of Notre Dame was on the infractions committee against USC? It seems that she was a major player in laying the hammer down. Inept reporting or just favortism to Notre Dame?
beano cook (3:50 PM)
I have no comment on that.
What do you think about the claims/investigation that UNC players were at an agents party in Miami? A NC State blog has pictures:http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2010/07/21/greg-little-update-aquagirl-weekend/Thanks!
beano cook (3:52 PM)
I was disappointed that I was not invited.
do you think texas will get to the rose bowl?
beano cook (3:52 PM)
You mean to the Fiesta Bowl, don't you?
corey schoonover (at the bar)
Who wins the Big 10 this year?
beano cook (3:53 PM)
where will mike leach end up?
beano cook (3:54 PM)
I have no idea but he would be great on TV. Perhaps American Idol. Could be replace Simon as a judge?
Who will win the Miami at Ohio State game?
beano cook (3:55 PM)
Ask me at the next chat. Should be one of the best games of the upcoming season.
Why no comment? I feel like such things should be reported by the media.
beano cook (3:56 PM)
You are entitled to your opinion.
beano cook (3:57 PM)
Thanks everyone for joining in this afternoon. That hour really went by fast. I will see you for the next chat on August 25th. I will make my prediction for the national championship on the date. See you then.
