We've got Donny!
Mark (Los Angeles, CA)
Do a player's off-the-field activities ever come into the rating equations?
Donny Moore (4:03 PM)
I would say slightly, but it's nothing that's ever played a predominant role. For example, Michael Vick a couple of years ago, because he was out of football, we deteriortated his skills, because he wasn't working out to play football.
when will there be a full roster update for online franchise?
Donny Moore (4:04 PM)
The updates for online are separate processes. The Devs need to look at it. Right now, they're having some issues with it. We're working hard on it and we hope to have it within the week. We know that people want to start playing with the latest and greatest.
Scott (Gainesville, FL)
Brett Favre's Decision Making Rating(DMR) has to be low right?
Donny Moore (4:05 PM)
I've had to take him off a roster and back on the very next day, because of his decision making skills. He drives me personally crazy. His Wishy-Washy rating would be 99.
How big of a hit will the Jets take to their team rating if Revis does indeed sit out the season?
Donny Moore (4:06 PM)
That's going to be significant. I've even seen him rumored in trade. He's 99 overall, best corner in the game. The Jets do have Cromartie and Wilson from the draft. I would say they go from 90 overall to an 88.
Hey donny I noticed a new rating category this season and was wondering what's the swagger rating do for a player in the game this year? Thanks!
Donny Moore (4:07 PM)
The swagger rating, a lot of people speculated that it has wide ranging impact on game play, but it just works with celebrations. Do guys high step into the end zone? Do they rile up the crowd? Or do they just hand the ball to the ref? It's funny, it's one of the more talked about ratings we've had. Ochocinco is a 99.
Ever been confronted by a player regarding his rating?
Donny Moore (4:08 PM)
Face to face? I can't think of a time. Certainly via Twitter and e-mail and social media. It's always done tongue in check, I think.
Donny Moore (4:09 PM)
Edgerrin James a few years ago, I e-mailed him back and forth, he wanted to know about all of the other The U running backs. They were all super competitive about who was the highest Miami RBs. He wanted his pass blocking to be higher.
When rating players on certain attributes, do you have benchmark players? Example, Do you start with CJ2K and say he is the fastest at 99 SPD and everyone goes down, or do you start with someone in the middle? How does that all work?
Donny Moore (4:11 PM)
We try to have 99s at every rating to simulate that this is the top player in the game. It all starts when we create the guys as a rookie. For CJ Spiller, we'll take a template and tweak him from there. We'll take Chris Johnson and change the attributes. But we have guys that are benchmarks, the fastest, etc. For a guy like Tom Brady, we weren't going to make him the top guy as a 6th round pick, but when he starts throwing the deep ball the best, we reflect that in the ratings.

How hard is the process for rating rookies that have not even played a down in the pros?
Donny Moore (4:13 PM)
It's not hard in the sense that there's a lot of info out there. I'm using 8-12 different types of football metrics sites. We're using all of that. What they did in college. CJ Spiller, let's find a guy similar to him. Jon Skelton was a later pick, but a lot of people said he had Joe Flacco arm strength, so he has, I think 95 arm strength, but everything else was reflective of being a late round pick. Perception and where they slot in plays a big role in where these guys rank until we have actual date to back it up.
Pete B (ATL)
Why is Aaron Rodgers so slow when he was 2nd in rushing yards last year to Vince Young?
Donny Moore (4:15 PM)
Looks like he's 24th in QB speed, but among starters, he's fifth. To my knowledge, he's 73 speed. He'll be outrunning DEs and almost every DT. He would have to show some burst of speed. It's not just based on rushing yards. I think he's pretty well suited as is.
Ness (Apopka, FL)
What's your favorite team? How do we know you don't favor their stats at all?
Donny Moore (4:16 PM)
I always tell people that I'm a Florida boy and Tampa Bay fan. They're the 3rd worst team in the game. Doing this, it's made me less of a Bucs fan and more of a fan overall. I treat it more serious. I'm more concerned about getting it right than on what team they play on. It's super important in the job I do here.
How often will you update the ratings during the season?
Donny Moore (4:17 PM)
The goal is to provide up to date rosters whenever they're needed. Any significant move, we try to be on top of it. We've tried to provide weekly updates until about halfway through the season.
why is eli manning rated lower this year then last year he had better numbers in almost all statistical catagories
Donny Moore (4:19 PM)
I know he's pretty close. He did have a good season. He's the ninth best QB in the game. I know some of his metrics went up. He's right on the cusp of being elite, just not there yet. It's not just what he did stat wise, it's a broad compilation of data. He's good, I wouldn't be too sad throwing the ball around with him.
Id imagine TO will be on the first roster update. my question is when do you guys set the roster that is shipped with the game. is there a cut off date for moves to be made for them to be included with the team
Donny Moore (4:20 PM)
Great question. The roster that ships Day 1 on the disc, we finalize that the last week of May. A lot of the key free agency moves have been made, the draft has happened. But now you download the roster online and that roster is good from 8/5 or 8/6.
Sam Bradford was described as deceptively mobile by analysts, yet he has a poor agility rating. why doesn't he get a nice lil boost to go with his throw on the run?
Donny Moore (4:22 PM)
Good point. It's definitely something we can take a deeper look at once he gets on the field. But it's one of those things where we could have looked at the film and done that, but we err on the side of caution. Last year our ratings stretched out. We really tried hard to stress the strengths and weaknesses. We'll wait and see what happens on the field and we'll be happy to bump him up when he does.
david (st. paul)
Who do I call to get your job? You stink and I would do it for 3/4 of what you make because I care!
Donny Moore (4:23 PM)
I would be happy to hear any feedback you have. It's a challenging job. I welcome anybody who can give me information. It's definitely not the type of thing where I say I am the expert and I don't want to hear from anyone. If you have valid feedback, you'll see it in the game.
Sam Walsh (Seattle)
Does T.O.'s move affect Carson Palmer's Ranking and/or his own?
Donny Moore (4:25 PM)
To be honest, I didn't change anything in regards to their individual skill sets. TO is a veteran who's proven that he's a good talent in the league. Getting a guy like TO will help Palmer's short passing game. As a team, we decided not to bump up the team as a whole, after adding 83 rating TO.
what type of rating you would give your self ?
Donny Moore (4:26 PM)
I'd put myself as a little 5-11, 160 WR. I'd have really good hands. I'd be sitting about 74 speed. I could be a low 80s route runner in one offseason.
What player had the biggest jump in rating from one roster update to the next last year?
Donny Moore (4:27 PM)
Miles Austin after his 250-yard game and Jerome Harrison had the 280-yard rating. Their ratings had to go up after that. It was as much as 5-8 points, if I remember it right.
how do you determine a player's potential?
Donny Moore (4:29 PM)
That's one of the hidden secrets about Madden that no one knows about. It's me predicting how a player will do in his career. Not just what I think, but looking at the information out there. JaMarcus Russell came in with a lot of hype and a lot of potential, but every year we had to take about 10 points off because he wasn't just showing he could do it.
How would you compare this years running game to the last few years? I feel like I can rarely establish the run like some teams do in the NFL.
Donny Moore (4:30 PM)
This year, if anything, it's a running game in Madden. We've done so much that you can really get the feeling with Chris Johnson with top speed versus the Mendenhalls with the power. I love the running game this year.
Why does a 300 lb offensive lineman like Bryan Bulaga have a better acceleration rating than all of the Packer running backs?
Donny Moore (4:32 PM)
Something like that is not necessarily is not relative to all the other backs. He shows elite acceleration for an OL. For game play, we need those guys to burst out there. It's easy to have Chris Johnson be effective in the game, but it's harder for OLs like that to show their impact.
Nick(Santa Maria, Ca) [via mobile]
Did Tim Tebow get a boost because he's our savior?
Donny Moore (4:32 PM)
No, but he might be getting a boost now because he has less hair and is aerodynamic....just kidding.
Nathan Walsh (Seattle)
whos better in ur opinion chris johnson or adrian peterson?
Donny Moore (4:33 PM)
I would go with Chris Johnson, because Adrian just doesn't have the receiving ability and he has a pretty big negative with his fumbling. I would go CJ 1, Peterson 2 and MJD 3.
Donny Moore (4:33 PM)
Peterson does bring the power that Johnson just doesn't have, though.
Mark (Los Angeles, CA)
What is the most difficult position to handicap?
Donny Moore (4:34 PM)
It's offensive line. It's a tough position to grade. A lot of it depends on how they work as a unit. There just aren't many metrics out there compared to the other positions. 1,200 yards for a running back, 4,000 yards for a passer are good marks. For a guard? We'll try to note individual notes for players, like Ryan Clady didn't give up a sack. He's an elite pass blocker.
Donny Moore (4:37 PM)
The game comes out today. Go get it. Go grab it. We have a brand new Madden website where fans can rankt he players that will be launching when the season starts. Keep an eye out for it. Madden for the people. We want you to contribute.
