AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Welcome back to the Tuesday AM chat. Did you miss me? I've got that second cup of coffee in hand and I'm ready to get to your questions for the next hour, so as always, we'll ask that most important question: Who's up first?
Hey AJ, I have the 6th pick in a dynasty league. Format is 2 qb, 2 rb, 3wr...who would you be looking to grab with the 6th pick? Thanks
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
I think if he's there, you have to take Drew Brees. I'd do it in a 1 QB league, and in a 2 QB league, it's even more pressing to get a solid No. 1 starter at that position.
TJ (Los Angeles)
Is Jorge de la Rosa a viable option for the rest of this season? He's been great the last two August/Septembers, but 2010 looks like a lost season. Would you drop him for Jake Westbrook? Thanks for the help!
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I don't think you can look at splits like "by month" and ever truly rely on them. If it looks like a lost season, it most likely is, and I'd easily prefer Westbrook.
AJ, I enjoyed your 10 rules article and incorporated into my football league this year. However, one person already complained because they knew I was going to incorporate it into baseball because the same 2 players have been traded over and over between the two players. Not everyone will be happy about everything in a league, but just want to say thanks for broadening my horizons on extra rules to incorporate.
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Thanks for the comment. Indeed, no league will ever please every owner, but as long as you are upfront about rules changes and allow for input, you'll be better off int he long run.
In a PPR league where i pick 9 of 12, am I crazy to consider going Wr, Wr, Rb, Rb?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I think there are so many RB "platoons" in the NFL these days that you can afford to wait on RBs a bit... however, see what happens before you in the first round. Far too often because it is PPR, people go nuts pulling WR off the board way too early, and some solid RBs can fall to you.
AJ, been trying all week and need to make a decision. Keeper league that is TD heavy. I got offered ADP and Jennings for Turner and Andre Johnson. Which side would you prefer?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Both are extremely even, and it comes down to who you trust more... I think I'd lean towards the first duo simply because I expect a far better season from Jennings than last year.
Battle of the DL: who is more likely to help my team down the stretch; Bay or Manny Ramirez?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Assuming he goes somewhere other than LA, it's Manny. If he stays in Dodgertown and doesn't hit the waiver wire, I fear he may "mail it in".
Best fantasy back-up QB; Palmer, Sanchez, Orton or Garrard?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Are you looking for safety or upside? Sanchez is likely going to be the most consistent in terms of production, but Palmer and Garrard will have some top 5 days to go along with some atrocious ones. Since I'm likely only starting the back-up once or twice, I go with Carson.
Scott (Boston, MA)
Hey AJ, I'm used to drafting in a 10-team league but am trying a 14-team league for the first time. Do you approach the draft any differently in a 14-team league? Should I reach for the top QB's and TE's since there's a much wider disparity after the top 8-9?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I think like any other league, you set up a draft list with defined tiers where you feel the value drops off significantly. Whenever your turn comes along, if there's a position that has only one or two names left in a given tier, that's where you grab your guy. However, it's easier to draft a balanced team in the middle of the snake than from the ends - you may want to reach a bit with 20+ selections going before you go again.
which 3b rest of the way, Pedro A, Cantu, C Johnson, WiggyAll of Valverde's walks are scaring me, trade him before they turn into BS's?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
I actually just picked up Wiggy for Neil Walker in my ESPN H2H league... I think he'll be fairly consistent going forward. And as for pitching - as long as you don't need saves, err on the side of caution.
You think Fitzgerald's value changes any since Warner is no longer the signal-caller? I don't trust Matt Leinart any farther than I can throw him.
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
It certainly doesn't go up any, but the injury concerns me more than the QB.
Better fringe WR: Collie, Henderson or Royal?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Collie would be my choice given the Colts penchant for working multiple receivers into the gameplan each week.
Where do you stand on Matt Forte? On the bandwagon for a 4th round pick or off?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
I think the problem is that most defenders are going to be standing on Forte. In the 4th round, he might well be the best man standing, but I am not high on him at all.
matt P [via mobile]
Jays young pitchers have had numerous starts of 6+ innings of not hit ball. Fluke or sign of future? Which of them do you like best over the next 5 years?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Sign of the future. This organization preaches throwing strikes and letting the defense handle the rest. I'm a huge fan of Marcum, but I think Romero has the best "ace" potential.
AJ, I pick third in a 12 teamer. Who would you target out of MJD, Rice, Gore, someone else? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Can't really go wrong with any of the three... personally I think MJD is the best of this trio, but ultimately it depends on your league's scoring system.
What do you think of the idea of having fantasy football break down to AFC and NFC leagues much like baseball does AL and NL leagues?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Different strokes for different folks... it certainly makes you have to have deeper rosters, but certain bye weeks may leave you struggling to field full lineups.
Hey AJ, 16 team league, have the #5 pick...passing td's are worth 6 point. if the td pass is between 10-39 yards you get 9 points, and anything over that is worth 12 points. Same applies to RB's and WR's. Who would you take at 5 assuming the top 4 RB's are gone? Andre? or a QB such as Rodgers or Brees?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Geez, I think TDs at 6 points are too much, now you're adding even more to the disparity? Yuck. If you're turning this into essentially a TD-only league, I go Brees.
I've got the 2 pick in a 14 team teague, 16 round draft. I've got to take Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson, right?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Hey, nobody thought CJ was the pick last season, and you saw what he did... I think there are few RBs who will get enough carries to potentially be worth the first few picks, and certainly CJ and AP are the best of that bunch...
I very well may be over reacting but when does Beckett become droppable in a 14 team mixed?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
I'd at least give him a start at Fenway before cutting him, but you're right - he's a very risky play right now.
Kevin (Warrenton, VA)
Who should be the best value of the bunch, Gore, D. Williams, S. Greene?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Gore is going to post the best stats, IMO, but in terms of "value" it all depends on where you draft them, no? Probably Greene will be the best "value"
8th pick in an 8 team league. I know for a fact someone else will be drafting Brees with his pick. I was going to go WR-WR, but I kind of want to go WR-QB and take something like Andre/Rodgers. Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
In an 8-team league, I can take RB-RB-RB-RB and there will still be one, if not two Top 10 QBs ready for the taking.
With all the depth chart info about Thomas Jones being the starter for the Chiefs do you think now is a good time to try and pry Jamal Charles from the owner in my league- for say Sidney Rice (12 team standard league- no PPR)
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
That's a grand idea, Todd. I don't think Rice and Harvin are going to be able to play more than 12 games together this season, if that much.
Can you rank the Mets closers now and do they all have some value for saves down the road?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
None of the options really seems all that good. I guess Parnell would be the "best" choice, with Feliciano second. It's not pretty.
Title says baseball, I'm sensing a lot of football questions... what gives?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Can only answer what is asked, and with the preseason in full swing and rosters needing to be set, NFL Q's dominate the chats...
AJ, who do you like down the stretch A. Huff or A. McCutchen? I can,t keep both, thanks.
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I'd keep Huff. Always better to stick with the players with something to play for.
In a dynasty keeper league. Which 3 do I keep out of Felix, Wainwright, Strasburg, and Hamilton?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
If you're cutting one, I'd toss Felix to the curb. Strasburg has way too much upside and Felix may never get wins if he stays in Seattle.
Jonathan (Roanoke, VA)
If you could pick your snake draft pick, 1-10, what would it be?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Five or 6. I much prefer having a consistent number of slots between my selections. It's far easier to gauge who'll be left when my turn comes next and whether or not to reach.
Nellie Cruz goes down again, who should the unprepared target in 12-team mixed?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
You can't really replace him... and you should have been prepared, given the DL trips this season... if you can swing a Damon or Kubel, they're the types who can keep you afloat until he returns.
I thought I heard Manuel say that he would stick with Takahashi?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
He very well might. I think Parnell is more suited for the role, but hey, Takahashi IS 1-for-1.
keepers for next year are mig cabrera, dwright, mccutchen, strasbrug and prince. should i try to trade one for more pitching?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Not now. Keep your keepers until the spring. Make sure any pitcher you decide to trade for gets through the off-season without needing arm surgery.
Do I do this trade: I send Cano and Carlos Santana, I receive King Felix. Keeper League. I'm playing for next year. thanks
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I wouldn't. Santana will be healthy and Cano could well lead the league in hitting.
Jonathan (New York City)
If the Commish of a league announces to the league that he surrenders for the season, shouldn't he then be prevented from making a trade that drastically alters the competitive landscape of the league?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Now, if it's a keeper league, of course he can trade to improve for next season, which isn't the same as "surrendering" but if he's just choosing not to play anymore, he should be removed from Commish position permanently.
AJ:Not now. Keep your keepers until the spring. Make sure any pitcher you decide to trade for gets through the off-season without needing arm surgery.thats the first smart thing ive ever heard you write in a column or chat, must have ate your wheaties this morning
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Oh, Fernando... "must have eaten" and Wheaties is capitalized as a brand name.
Do you write any articles anymore? Thoughts on V-Mart for the reast of the year?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I think V-Mart hits around .275 the rest of the way with a few HRs. Nothing special, nothing horrific. And fear not, I was on vacation last week - more columns are coming soon.
Any news on Swisher's injury last night, I didn't see it?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Swisher seemed to have aggravated an elbow... probably will be fine after a day off.
Jonathan (Roanoke, VA)
Considering the lack of talent at 2B, couldn't you make the argument that Cano is the fantasy MVP?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Absolutely could make that argument. I think it's hard to pass Miggy for sheer numbers, but for overall value and relative value at his position, there's no question how well Cano has performed.
How does the Westbrook signing effect Gore's value?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Not much. He'll get some carries and certainly should get some third down reps, but in the end, if he stays healthy, he should actually increase Gore's value as the season goes on due to less wear and tear, similar to how Tomlinson will help Greene in NY.
Patrick (Green Bay)
Philosophical question AJ. Been playing fantasy sports for years. The thing I can't get past any longer is that in most leagues you can't stop how many points are scored against you. Every year I see good teams miss the playoffs for something out of their control, points scored against. I prefer to take as much "luck" out of these games as possible. Am I the only one who thinks this way? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Then you should not be playing head-to-head. If you went to some form of rotisserie-style scoring, all that would matter is you selecting the best possible players.
AJ -What's a good category to replace Wins in a 10 or 12 team roto league? We're tired of wins being impossible to relate to how good or bad a pitcher really is. It's pure luck often and RP's and team offenses often blow it for good starters.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Quality starts is a good step up, but I'd prefer something like Game Score, though it's nearly impossible to find on websites.
What is the long-term diagnosis for KRod? Even if he is dropped by the Mets (good luck getting that by the union), he is closing somewhere in 2011 right?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
No doubt he closes somewhere in 2011 as long as the injury heals properly. If this incident hadn't occurred, there'd be no doubt he'd still be the Mets closer -- and he probably will be anyway.
Chris (out here)
AJ, Game Score is readily available at Baseball Reference. Not hard to find at all.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Not hard to find... just hard to find a site that will use it as a category for you.
Scutaro, Drew, or Tejada rest of the way
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Marco, so help me. I can't seem to quit him.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
That's the final whistle! Thanks to all who took part and we'll Be Seeing You!
