Terry Blount (3:07 PM)
Sorry guys. They had two chatrooms up for me and I clicked on thw wrong one.
Brian (Woodbridge, VA) [via mobile]
Hey Terry, how's it going? Since the beginning of the 2008 season Hendrick Motorsports has 26 victories with 19 of those belonging to Jimmie Johnson. How big of a concern is it to Rick that the only team of his winning is the 48?
Terry Blount (3:09 PM)
Obviously, they expected more victories this year. Martin's year is a disappointment, as is Junior's, of course, but Gordon has run well without going to Victory Lane. Gordon actually could win the championship without winning a race. The big concern right now is to make sure the 48 in back on track for the playoff.
What is your reaction to Monte calling out Tony Stewart for his behavior with the media? And do you think it will do any good
Terry Blount (3:10 PM)
Smoke couldn't care less what anyone in the media says about him. In fact, it probably will make him more feisty.
With no punishment coming from the Kyle/Brad incident on Friday night, why did NASCAR view it differently than the Carl/Brad incident earlier in the season? Both Carl and Kyle admitted to purposely wrecking Brad, but Kyle didn't even get the usual slap on the wrist 3 week probation.
Terry Blount (3:12 PM)
One big difference. Kyle didn't put anyone's life in danger. He bumped Brad on a short track and caused him to spin. Carl wrecked Brad twice at high speed and caused dangerous accidents.
With the NHRA's Countdown starting in Indy next week, who do you see coming out on top with the championship in the pro categories when it's all said and done in November?
Terry Blount (3:15 PM)
Dixon wil be hard to beat, but it would be foolish to count out the Sarge since he has won six consecutive titles. And Antron Brown could get hot and make a run in Top Fuel. I think defending champ Robert Hight is the man to beat in Funny Car, but it would be something to see the old man (John Force) pull it off. Mike Edwards has dominated in Pro Stock, but Greg Anderson or Jeg could make a run at it.
RAY GORDON REID ( SUMTER SC 29105)
QUESTION TO TERRY PROFESSER BLOUNT AT 3,25 HOWDY TERRY WHO WINS F1 AT SPA SUNDAY
Terry Blount (3:17 PM)
Only the great John Clayton deserves the prof moniker, but thanks. Alonso has looked good in practice, but it raining so it might not be as fast if it dries out.
Firewalker87 (Huntington Beach, CA)
Terry, have admired your work for years. I think you are dead on about Junior-He is a fish out of water at Hendrick. My question is, will history repeat itself with Kahne? Besides $$$, is he a good fit?
Terry Blount (3:19 PM)
Good question. I think Kasey is a much better firt at Hendrick than Junior. Kasey is much more of the botton-down corporate guy than Earnhardt. I expect great things from Kasey in the 5, but I think it's was a mistake not to put him in the 5 next year.
why doesn't pops want to be Jr. CC, I mean if fans want to blame anyone for his problems they should blame pops for not wanting the job
Terry Blount (3:22 PM)
He just doesn't want all those headaches at his age. And honestly, I don't know if Tony Sr. would fit in with ther way they do things at Hendrick. Pops is a old-school Bear Bryant kind of leader. The Hendrick guys are more Nick Saban kind of guys. Just a different ways of doing things.
Jenny (Elizabeth Town LA)
Is there a driver in the top 12 that will not make the chase?
Terry Blount (3:23 PM)
No. Bowyer is the only one with any remote possibility of falling out, and it probably would take two DNFs for him to blow a 100-point advantage over Jamie in 13th.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Terry, is RPM for sure a 2-car team next year? Also, since Ford wants to have around 8-10 full time cup teams, will RPM eventually in the future get back to 4 cars?
Terry Blount (3:25 PM)
Petty said RPM will be two cars next year unless a big-time sponsor falls in their lap, not likely. But it may be a good thing because they can take the best guys from four teams and make the 2011 two-team operation much stronger. I don't see them going back to a four-car team anytime soon.
does jr. just not know what he wants out of the new car because it seems like he goes from too tight to too loose all through out practice while other driver either like it tight or loose
Terry Blount (3:27 PM)
Junior has struggled with the new car, no question. He likes to run up high on the track, but that's harder to do with this car because it gets loose so easliy and can brush the wall.
jessica (new jersey)
Should Rick Hendrick make another crew chief change for Junior?
Terry Blount (3:28 PM)
Many people think so, but they tell me that's not going to happen. If it was my decision, I would give Ron Malec a shot at it.
TerryIs their any category from your recent book that you had wished you had added to the list? Anything you regret you did include? Keep up the good work in print and TV.
Terry Blount (3:30 PM)
Thanks Jeff. Not really on the book thing. I put in what I thought were the pertinent topics at the time I was writing it three years ago. A lot of those still apply.
When will Kenny Francis decide where he wants to go to be crew chief?
Terry Blount (3:33 PM)
I think he wants to wait as long as he can. If he says he leaving, RPM officials might tell him to go ahead and go now. It's really complicated since Kasey is going to Red Bull first. Does Kenny go there or go straight to Hendrick and wait for him? Or does he stay at RPM? If I had to guess, I would say Kenny will go with Kasey to Red Bull.
Do you think adding a fourth car will hurt RCR next year?
Terry Blount (3:34 PM)
I don't think so because it's fully funded by Menard and they can put good people on that team. I think Childress learned a lot about what not to do with they had four last year.
if there any chance if Red Bull does get KF they could tie him up for more then the one year Kayne will be there so he doesn't take their knowledge and run
Terry Blount (3:36 PM)
No chance at that whatsoever. Kahne is No. 5 bound in 2011. And Jay Frye is very close to Rick Hendrick. Jay would try to undercut Rick.
What are your thoughts on Kansas Speedway getting a 2nd Cup weekend?
Terry Blount (3:38 PM)
I love the speedway and the location. I lot of cool stuff has been built around the track and the casino will make it better. Going to two Cup events it tough for any track, but at least KC only has 75,000 seats. And it's way better than having two races at Fontana. But if i was going to add a 2nd date somewhere, it would be Vegas.
in know how to make wins matter...go to an elimination-style chase. Your number of wins equals you number of mulligans. If you have 3 wins, you have three get-out-of-jail-free cards that you can play to keep from being eliminated. wins in the chase add to your available mulligans.
Terry Blount (3:40 PM)
Interesting concept. I kind of like it. I'm in favor of an elimination system, but I know many people aren't.
Will Junior win this year?
Terry Blount (3:40 PM)
Maybe, but my guess would be no.
So do you think Scott Speed is out at Red Bull or will they be a 3 car team with Kahne?
Terry Blount (3:42 PM)
I don't see Red Bull footing the bill for a third car. So things don't look good for Scott.
Which race on the chase schedule has the most impact regarding being diffrent?
Terry Blount (3:43 PM)
Talladega far and away. The only plate race in the playoff and a place where half the contenders can get caught up in a big wreck at any moment.
Rob (Colorado Springs)
Would Pops have to be a Hendrick employee just to get on the radio during a race and straighten Jr out?
Terry Blount (3:44 PM)
Don't think they would let Pops give advice as a civilian, so to speak.
Who do you think will win the nationwide race at Montreal this weekend?
Terry Blount (3:45 PM)
I'll go with Ambrose.
Will JRM field a Sprint Cup team in 2012 for Jr?
Terry Blount (3:46 PM)
That's a long way away, but Jr. is under contract with Hendrick through 2012.
Who wins the chase this year?
Terry Blount (3:47 PM)
I'd still pick JJ, but I think this could be the cloesest Chase with the most contenders ever. The top four or five guys look pretty even.
Is David Ragan's days numbered at Roush?
Terry Blount (3:47 PM)
He's back next year. After that ....
Do you think that Brad K has a lot of fans other than the Jr Nation?
Terry Blount (3:49 PM)
Brad has tons of fans. So does Kyle Busch. Typically, drivers who fans love to hate also are drivers that many people love to follow.
In those media sessions, Does Rowdy treat the media with the same level of respect that Stewart does?
Terry Blount (3:49 PM)
They are pretty much neck and neck for hatred of reporters.
Ever since the chase went to 12 its been less exciting for the race to the chase. what are your thoughts?
Terry Blount (3:52 PM)
No matter where you draw the line, it's always a luck of the draw as to whether the bubble spot will be close. But I liked it better with 10 drivers. However, I would like to see a win and your in rule, assuming a driver finishes in the top 20 in the standings. Otherwise, he could win early and skip the rest of the regular season.
Terry, which drivers are the best with the media? (always give a legit answer, no sarcasm, never gets angry, etc...)
Terry Blount (3:54 PM)
Jeff Burton easily is No. 1 on tbe list, but Jeff Gordon would be No. 2. Very intelligent guys who give well thought out answers to every question. Mark it down, Burton will run for office when his racing days are done.
Great article today Terry. I love to read about McMurray but he doesn't get the most media coverage. Do you feel that EGR has the resources to get Jr. after his Hendrick contract's up? Imagine the superteam of Montoya, McMurray, and the namesake!
Terry Blount (3:55 PM)
Thanks Jolt. That's too far ahead to speculate, but I don't see Junior going to EGR unless the E part of it goes away, as in Teresa E.
Tommy (Houston, )
Burton for office? Dog catcher? Traffic manager?
Terry Blount (3:56 PM)
Try senator or governor.
Tommy (Houston, )
How come Reuitman got so bent out of shape about Rowdy's comments after Bristol? I read the transcript and it sounded to me like Rowdy was complimenting Reuitman?
Terry Blount (3:57 PM)
They have a long history of dislike. And it was fun to see Reuti snap back.
Why is nascar so reluctant to have more than two road courses in the cup series, since a lot of the ovals they are nearly identical and every road course is unique?
Terry Blount (3:59 PM)
NASCAR always has accepted road courses a bit begrudingly because stock cars aren't really built for it. But I think the road races have been great in the new cars with double-file restarts. They won't go to three road courses, but I would like to see Sonoma in the Chase and it wouldn't hurt my feeling to see Montreal in Cup instead of The Glen.
Awesome article today Terry! I always love your work. How many more years do you see Jeff Gordon racing before he slips into retirement or does that hinge on sponsorship? Will he go all out with a "Victory Lap/Last Call" situation or will it be a quiet farewell?
Terry Blount (4:01 PM)
Jeff said recently he plans to stick around for another four or five years. That's a change for a couple of years ago when he thought his back problems might lead him to quit sooner, but his back is much better now.
I read in my Nascar history book that way, back in the day Nascar had 3 road course races at Riverside in California.
Terry Blount (4:02 PM)
Yes they did, but those days are gone. They also used to race on dirt and on the beach at Daytona, but that won't happen again.
With Gordon now backing down from his earlier comments about not racing into his 40's and Mark struggling this year...who retires first, Gordon or Martin?
Terry Blount (4:03 PM)
Good question. I'm starting to think Mark wants to drive forever. But I can tell you which one leaves Hendrick first. Martin.
Cory (Montgomery, AL)
In your mind, is Bobby Labonte a Hall of Famer? Could you explain why or why not?
Terry Blount (4:05 PM)
I would say Bobby is border line on that one, unless you think every Cup champion is a Hall of Famer. He still may make it, but Bobby's way down the list for now.
I keep hearing how much of a disappointment Montoya has been this year....... but really? looking at the overall line of work.... was this a dissapointing year or not?
Terry Blount (4:06 PM)
It's disappointing to everyone on the 42 team that they won't make the Chase. They really expected to make it and contend for the title this year after the way they finished last year.
Terry Blount (4:08 PM)
Gotta run folks. Good questions today. Have a great weekend and a great Labor Day holiday next week. I'm going on vacation for a week to recharge my batteries before they Chase. Take care. Peace.
