Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. It is time for college football to be back in the spotlight. This is the first of our weekly chats during the 2010 college football season. For the record this is the 142nd season of college football. No, I was not at the first one.
Doug Ellingson (Minneapolis)
Beano, what is your gut feeling about how the Big Ten will split into divisions for football?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
I think that is the obvious way to go. I presume that the Ohio State-Michigan game will still be the last game of the season for both teams despite the rumors. To play this game in October is stupid.
Yellow Fever (Jersey City, NJ)
The SEC rules, right, Beano? Do we even need to watch any other conferences this year? Do you even know anything about any other teams?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Number one, all I am saying is the SEC is the strongest conference. Nobody can really dispute that. I happen to watch all conferences. The addition of Nebraska to the Big Ten will make that the second-toughest conference.
Which coach is on the hot seat?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
Rich Rodriguez of Michigan is number one, which is probably why you asked. It is incrdible to note that in the AP poll, Central Michigan got more points that Michigan. My advice to Michigan is win the first game at home against Connecticut. If not, it could be a long season.
Andrew (San Antonio, TX)
If OSU beats TCU in the Cowboy Classic on September 4th, how do you see that affecting the Beavers ranking in the polls and Jacquizz Rodgers' heisman campaign? And if they follow up with a win at Boise State?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
I don't know about the Heisman campaign. Oregon State is a contender for the Pac-10. If the Beavers beat TCU and Boise State, then we can talk about Heisman contention. That is a pretty tough assignment to beat those two.
Hello Pope Beano, How are you feeling? Besides ND and Florida State in 1993, has there ever been a team voted number 1 over a team that they lost to when both teams had the same amount of losses?
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Yes, in 1936, Northwestern beat Minnesota. The game was played in early October and then later in the year Notre Dame beat Northwestern and Minnesota won the national title.
Baron (Large, PA)
Who are the greatest Defensive College Players you've seen? Where does Hugh Green rank? Thank you
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
That is tough to say. I have seen a lot and I agree that Hugh Green is one of the best. The late Jack Tatum was unbelievable. There have been so many great defensive players over the years.
Dev (Monkey's Eyebrow, Ky)
Why so much hate for Big ten? Iowa is winning the national title this year ...Nuff Said.........
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
The fact is I don't hate the Big Ten. What I do resent is the arrogance. Iowa could win the national title, but let's play the season first before we give them the trophy. Ohio State is still the favorite to win the Big Ten championship.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who is going to be the starting Quarterback for Florida since Tim Tebow is playing for the Denver Broncos?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
John Brantley will be the starter. All reports are he is a solid passing quarterback. I don't think you have to shed too many tears for Urban Meyer, though Tebow will be missed. He was a great college player.
Charles Mitchell (Las Vegas, NM)
If Texas pursued independence as BYU did announcing that it would play a BS Univ schedule of one or two high profile games and a predominantly WAC schedule there would be howls of laughter. Why does the press give BYU a free ride?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
Who says they are? I don't know if BYU is getting a free ride. I think they will be able to get a schedule but it won't be able to get it as easy as Notre Dame can. Quickly, not an easy schedule, just to clarify.
Library Cop (NYC Public Library)
What opening weekend game are you looking forward to the most? PS- Don't forget to return Tropic of Cancer
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I gave the book to Jerry last week. I am looking forward to Boise State-Virginia Tech and Purdue-Notre Dame.
Beano, VT or Boise? I like Boise 24-17, GO BOISE ST!!
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I will make my first pick of the season next Wednesday.
Beano Lilly (annapolis, md)
Beano, How come WVU isn't getting top 10 respect this year. They have their whole Defense back, an experienced o line, Noel Devine, Jock Sanders, Tavon austin, and some talented young qbs. To me I think they are a 10 to 11 win team this season. What do you think about that?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
It is hard to say. If they win at LSU, they will get respect and probably be in the top 10. Noel Devine is a great back.
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Bill Stewart is on the hot seat a bit but I don't think that is fair. i think West Virginia fans are unrealistic.
Who has a higher approval rating right now in SEC country, Lane Kiffin or Congress?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
I love that one. That is a toss-up. Flip a coin.
carson (gadsden, AL)
Beano, Do you see BK putting the "Fight" Back in the Fighting Irish? If so, how long do you think it will take him?
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
I thought Charlie Weis was going to do the job and I was wrong. Give Kelly some time but I feel the Irish could win 10 games. They have a few easy games for a change and they have material. Floyd is one of the best receivers in the nation. It will depend on the improvement on defense.
Lynn (Monticello, FL)
Hi Mr. Cook, the question that I have will Florida and Miami continue to play each other after the 2013 season which is the last game of the contract.
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
From time to time. Florida doesn't want to play them every year. Florida has to play Florida State every year.
Shouldn't the NCAA make a decision the eligibility of the players it has been investigating (for months) before the season starts?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Yes. Marvin Austin and the others should know their situation. That is the only fair thing to do.
Beano, love your chats and podcasts. What happens to the WAC and the remaining teams in it?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I feel sorry for them. They will continue for now and I hope they can add some teams. It is all about greed in college athletics these days.
Your thoughts on the Athletic Director at Boise State asking the NCAA to mandate home-and-home games between non conference match-ups?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Ridiculous. It is a ridiculous request and it won't happen.
Neal (SW FL)
with you still alive,,,we must have the best health care in the world...LOl..love you beano...how are my canes going to fair this year...
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
See me after the Ohio State game.
More hatred this year: The Iron Bowl, Texas-Nebraska or LeBron James' return to Cleveland?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Wow. I think LeBron's return to Cleveland will call for the third armour division for protection. Always hatred for Alabama-Auburn.
What is your opinion on teams "selling out" their home games to play elsewhere. Indiana fans are missing a "home game" against PSU for some cash and will play what amounts to an away game in front of 90,000 fans at Fedex field in DC.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
First, I think it is wrong, but that is the way it is today. As far the the gate in concerned, the money will go to Indiana. I don't like it, but greed is the word of the day in college athletics.
Care to comment on the report that the Pirates made $20 million last year?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
They made mor elike $5 million. I have no opinion, though playoff tickets will not be available.
Did Ohio State schedule a Thursday night game with Marshall for the extra time to prepare for Miami? OSU doesn't need the exposure of a Thursday night game which should go to lesser schools.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Number one, I don't think this is about extra time for Miami. As for exposure, a lot of good teams play a Thursday night contest. Just look at the schedule. Hotels often bitch about those Thursday night games because they lose an extra night of fans flying in.
JOE (ALBANY NY)
If the Big Ten is arrogant than what is the SEC? Besides cheaters!
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
When I say the Big Ten is arrogant, it is my perception. Others may not feel that way and that is fine. Your comment about the SEC is pure nonsense.
Steve (San Diego)
After reading the story on Tom Osborne today, it seems like Mr. Conservative shocked everyone by making the move to the Big 10. Do you think in the long run this will be a good move for the Big Red?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
I didn't think it was going to happen. I feel it is a perfect fit for Nebraska. They were unhappy with the division of the TV money and the probability of the Big 12 championship game being mainly in Dallas. I think Nebraska will have a problem competing in basketball in the Big Ten, not that they were great in the Big 12.
Beano - am i the only one seeing struggles for Alabama this year? They lost 13 of their top 16 defensive players. Their offense is loaded, which is good because they will be in a lot of shootouts with that inexperienced defense.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
It is very difficult to repeat in college football. If Alabama is 11-1 and doesn't win the SEC title, is that an unsuccessful season. Alabama has to go to Arkansas and LASU and could play Florida for the SEC title. The Florida-Alabama game in October may be the most interesting game of the regular season.
Hey Beano, listening to you and Ivan right now. On the question of international following: I was in London over the summer and wore my Auburn t-shirt to the British Museum and got a big War Eagle from a British woman. I later got a "Roll Tide" from a Brit in a pub. Even in London the Iron Bowl is 24/7.
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
I was asked if college football would be a global sport and I said no. There will always be some fans. If you went to the arctic circle and wore a Penn State shirt, someone would understand it.
Beano Baker (Des Moines)
Do you type your responses for chat or do you dictate your words to a typist?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
I am on the phone giving the reponses to a typist.
Now that the dust has settled, how do you think Chip Kelly has handled the Ducks both on and off the field?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
I think he has. It is not easy to make some of these deciaions.
How do you feel about PAC 10 fans feeling like we dont enough respect for our Out of conference schedules and our 9 conference game schedules? Please tell me you know that the PAC 10 plays the toughest OOC schedules, Beano.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
I keep hearing that and it is nonsense, pure nonsense. Give me a break.
Billy (South Bend)
Beano, over/under for ND wins this 8.5; which side are you on?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
I think they will win 10, so draw your own conclusion.
What's more plausible, Iowa 12-0 or Iowa 7-5?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I would never say 12-0 but probably better than 7-5.
Jon (Little Rock, AR)
Beano, with the positive reviews about Arkansas's Defense coming from practice, how improved do you think the Razorbacks will be?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
My early season upset special is Arkansas over Alabama. Last year I thought Mississippi would beat Alabama, so don't book your trip to Las Vegas quite yet.
Last year I asked you if Matt Barkley was regretting his decision to attend USC. You said that he was still in good shape. Do you still have that opinion after the crushing decision by the NCAA.
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
In retrospect, he didn't know USC would get his this hard. I still think USC will be decent this year.
Davebo (Catonsville (HomeoftheComets))
Will Friedgen be back at Maryland next year? Any prediction on the Navy/Maryland Game
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
Number one, there is a new athletic director so he is obviously on the hot seat. Navy-Maryland is a very good game.
Sean (South Bend)
Beano, which of these teams would you pick to go undefeated this year if you had to choose one: Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Iowa, Oregon, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Good quuestion. Ohio State would be first. Texas would be my second choice.
Lou (Rockville, MD)
Not sure if you caught Ron Cook's latest diatribe in the Post-Gazette, but he seems to think JoePa should retire as he apparently won't be with us much longer. What is your gut telling you - will JoePa ride his 400+ wins into the sunset this year, or keep on keepin' on?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Everything depends on his health. If he feels like he can do it next year, he will be back.
Coincidence or conspiracy, ND hasn't won anything since it started running the infomercial on NBC!
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
There is no conspiracy. It will be interesting to see how Kelly's offense and NBC's commercials work out. NBC is going to get all the commercials in that it has to -- that is a sure bet.
Bob (Washington, DC)
Beano, love your podcast with Ivan. Are you going to be at the Alabama vs. PSU game?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I am not planning on it as of now.
Ja-Jimmy (Mount Lebanon )
Best college team in Pennsylvania is??
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
Beano Cook (3:57 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I will be back next week at the same time with my national championship prediction and my week one pick. See you then.
