Jim McCormick (2:56 PM)
Let's get this chat started, already have a good number of questions to sift through.
What to do with Beanie Wells when you are hurting for a running game?
Jim McCormick (2:59 PM)
Own Tim Hightower? But really, you can only wait for Beanie to show and prove, both that he's healthy and not rusty from the dormant period. We shall see, but I wouldn't be starting him this week unless he's a true participant, and not just doing drills. Seems unlikely that we'll know just what kind of work we'll see from him, so I'd look elsewhere if possible. But I know that's not always the case if you don't have the depth. Maybe get Tolbert if in the unlikely case he's available?
Danny Boy (Woodbury, MN)
You buying BenJarvus as a pickup at all - and to what extent?
Jim McCormick (3:02 PM)
Yeah, I am. To the extent that he's a nice depth addition, a 4th or 5th back if the roster allows it. If Taylor were to go down he could have some increased value, I don't think we necessarily extract much from this running game this season - in terms of actually being worthy of starting on a fantasy roster each week.
Thomas (Van Dyke)
Who's this Keiland Williams kid? Any chance he breaks out in the second half of the year the way Arian Foster did late last year? Worth a roster spot with the injury history of Portis?
Jim McCormick (3:03 PM)
I stashed him in a 12-team league that a fairly deep bench, and he's certainly worthy of ownership if people are holding onto dead weight (Maroney types etc). He's the No.2 behind what seems like a slowed Portis, but his value seems dependent on Portis being out, rather than Williams playing his way into a share.
James (Atlanta, Ga)
Who are going to be IDP stars that no one knows about.
Jim McCormick (3:07 PM)
I like Cason in SD, Weatherspoon in ATL, Witherspoon in Ten, Allen in Philly. I try to unearth as many guys as possible each week in my IDP article (Fridays).
when are the idp rankings coming out?
Jim McCormick (3:08 PM)
Not trying to be too IDP-heavy here just how these came in - they come out tomorrow man, every Friday in D Up!
Jim - when the weekly rankings and projections conflict with each other, who are we to lend more credence to? For example, the Eagles' DST is ranked 5th by the experts this week but is 26th in terms of the fantasy point projections. Conversely, the Bucs' D was given a 21st place ranking but is projected to be the 2nd best fantasy D this week. Who to trust?
Jim McCormick (3:11 PM)
We also have to consider the opponents so far, but I can see what you are saying. Essentially the rankings reflect what is expected versus what has been done, not to say that the production to date isn't a serious determinant, but that it's not the sole element that goes into what is to be expected. That said, I think the Bucs are an underrated unit, but Philly will get their sacks and turnovers - with this week being a solid enough matchup against what has been a sloppy Jacksonville offense. In the end - the who to trust question is you trust a balance of research and really just your gut.
How high would you be willing to rank Arian Foster for the rest of the year? top 10?
Jim McCormick (3:13 PM)
I think Arian Foster, outside of some really great other options, should be in your lineup. Not sure if designating him top ten or not matters, what matters is that he's become a trusted source in a potent offense. He is at the time I believe just in between being a true No. 1 fantasy back and a really high-end No. 2, if that helps at all.
Your thoughts on how the Colts might use Donald Brown going forward...
Jim McCormick (3:16 PM)
I think this past Sunday Night was a little atypical of what we should expect. The Colts were in a position to run the game out, which they might well be in several other weeks, but for the games that are competitive throughout I think it will be tougher for Brown to make an impact worthy of fantasy trust given his continuing lack of blocking acumen. For now, he's a depth asset and emergency plug-in, it seems it would take Addai to be in street clothes for this kid to truly matter this season.
I have some ugly flex options this week, please help pick one out of Fred Taylor, Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant or Marshawn Lynch (assuming he gets most of the carries as rumored today).
Jim McCormick (3:18 PM)
When you said ugly and Marshawn Lynch I was like dude, give the guy a break, although his thumbnail does make me think he guards bridges and wants your first born to cross. That said, I like Dez here, as the majority of Buffalo carries is like getting the majority of dumpster to pick through, just not a good look. Thomas has promise but I'd like to see another week out of him, and Fred Taylor is theoretically nice - but that team just doesn't give a single back the ball more than 15 times, it seems.
Michael Bush worth holding on to? He's my 4th RB so he's not hurting me, but I don't want to eat up a bench spot (only 5 of them) for a guy who won't be productive barring injury to DMC.
Jim McCormick (3:20 PM)
I say if you can wait until we see some evidence of both of them in that backfield before you make a move, but I understand that your roster might not bear that patience. It's not absurd to cut bait, but given DMC's seeming injury woes and the fact that we really don't know how they plan to deploy Bush, waiting would at least provide some information to aid the decision.
I never get my questions answered :/. This is a huge deal; which side of this trade do you like best?Team A: M. Forte, J. Stewart, R. WayneTeam B: M. Jones-Drew, M. Austin
Jim McCormick (3:24 PM)
Wade in Tuscaloosa, I have made your day my friend. I actually prefer side A, was considering B but I think Stewart's value in this is as a throw-in, and I'm not sure that's really appropriate as these are just two weeks and let's see if Clausen can help that offense. I guess my hesitation to side with B is that MJD hasn't been great so far and that mysterious lingering knee issue looms. That, and I think while Austin is a tad more valuable than Wayne arguably, it's not by much.
Jim McCormicks Psychic (Baltimore, MD)
Do you see Kolb's benching for Vick helping or hurting D-Jax? Kolb was a short rhythm passer, so it should help... correct?
Jim McCormick (3:26 PM)
We've already seen DeSean play well with Vick, and I don't think that changes. We were already expecting relatively low-reception totals from D-Jax, so nothing really changes from me, he remains an elite big-play threat - kind of the Chris Johnson of receivers in a really bad analogy way.
You big on Cinci this week, or should I pick up Arizona vs Oak?
Jim McCormick (3:27 PM)
I like Cinci more than that Arizona defense. Oakland is a quirky offense now that the Bruce is loose, not that they are imposing, just more so than a Jimmy Clausen-led offense that has struggled in nearly every facet.
Is D. Williams and Bradshaw too much to give up for Rice?
Jim McCormick (3:28 PM)
Yep, too much. Bradshaw is a 20-carry back, not sure how many are out there.
Peanut Butter (Jelly Time)
If you could move Best for Stephen Jackson, would you?
Jim McCormick (3:30 PM)
I'd prefer Steven Jackson, but even then I might still do it. I think Best is an amazing talent, I wrote him up in our 32 questions piece and he is literally world-class fast. But at the same time, I value Jackson more, has proven to handle a considerable workload and that offense is only improving. It's not absurd to compare these guys, but I prefer Jackson by a good margin.
Announced today that Tolbert will get the start over Matthews. What do you think that means in terms of carries vs. Matthews and Sproles? Is Tolbert a better bet than Bradshaw this week?
Jim McCormick (3:33 PM)
Bradshaw will soon prove that he's a weekly starter, the scores will come. I like Tolbert a lot as a flex or in a deep league as a plug-in for Mathews. In terms of the breakdown between Tolbert and Sproles? I think they were pretty clear with their dispersal last week; Tolbert is the two-down back and Sproles is the versatile 3rd down he's always been but will see likely 3-5 more looks than if they were using Mathews as the feature back. Also,non-fantasy wise - Tolbert is just really fun to watch - reminds me of the fat point guard theory, it's just captivating stuff.
Al Davis (Raider Nation)
Jim, any chance I can acquire Braylon Edwards and Plaxico Burress in the near future?
Jim McCormick (3:34 PM)
I'm thinking its possible, I sometimes wonder if Oakland is just running the longest Weekend at Bernie's marathon ever.
Hi Jim. Thinking about sitting Celek, and picking up Mercedes Lewis or Aaron Hernandez for Nanee (I'm deep at WR). Waste of time, or go for it? Thanks.
Jim McCormick (3:36 PM)
I like Lewis just to see if this keeps up - Garrard has been looking for him very often, and all we want from any TE, or wideout for that matter, is targets/attention. I like the New England kid, but not sure the targets will be there every week, more of a function of the gameplan and what's given to Brady.
Forsett or Caddy for 2010?
Jim McCormick (3:36 PM)
Caddy, he has a legit gig, can't say that for Forsett.
Would you trade SIMS-WALKER for BRADSHAW?
Jim McCormick (3:37 PM)
Immediately, not sure why a Bradshaw owner would, though.
Mike Tolbert (SD)
For this week only, do you start me over Best? How can Best possibly continue this scoring streak against the Vickings? I appear to have the better match up. What do you think?
Jim McCormick (3:37 PM)
Put your keyboard down, and slowly walk away. AKA, please just start Best.
Should I start Dez Bryant or Santana Moss?
Jim McCormick (3:38 PM)
Jeremy is breaking posting records here - I'd go with Moss, both more consistent and McNabb has been looking his way often, a deep score is on the way.
What do you suggest I do with R. Bush now?
Jim McCormick (3:40 PM)
I have him in two leagues - one, a ten-team with shallow bench, I cut him. The other, a deeper 12-team, he's still on my team. So it's contextual. I think if you can wait say 3 weeks or so some news should start to trickle out that's more specific. It seems very possible he returns in 6-7 weeks, TO did it like 4-5 with Philly's SB run.
Hey Jim, Do I drop Pierre Garcon if he has another no-show game Sunday, and pickup Santonio Holmes?Thoughts on Holmes impact on NYJ upon return?Thoughts on Garcon?
Jim McCormick (3:42 PM)
Man, Garcon isn't doing much to earn his keep. I think PG still gets some shots but Peyton won't hesitate to look elsewhere if Garcon continues to drop the well-placed passes. Holmes enters a somewhat enigmatic Jets' passing game in a few weeks, but on talent alone is worth owning. I think he has a boom/bust type of impact, when he does assimilate.
HENRY (Tampa, FL)
Crabtree ready to break out, or closer to being benched permanently?
Jim McCormick (3:43 PM)
I think he's the third, possibly fourth option out there at time for Smith, and we need to see some really strong, high-target outings for this to change. Not sure of the explanation, honestly, but if the QB isn't looking your way then the numbers won't be there, obviously.
Jabar Gaffney (DEN)
Has the rookie stolen my fantasy value?
Jim McCormick (3:44 PM)
I think the parity of that passing offense has, for sure. And somehow, Gaffney is the lowest on the totem pole at the time. He has become cut-worthy in most format, sadly, as I was expecting a solid season.
Jordan (East Lansing)
I really want to acquire Ray Rice before he starts to get going...what should I expect to have to give in order to get him?
Jim McCormick (3:46 PM)
You still have to pay top-dollar, more than MJD it seems but considerably less obviously than the AP/CJ prices. It's gonna take a solid haul, start offering and see what the Rice offer wants, it's better to know what they want then to blindly offer in most cases.
Daily Show (Cancelled?)
Love Jonathan Stewart on Comedy Central, scared of him in the NFL. I'm facing my league nemesis this week (can't stand the guy), so please help me beat him.Who should I use in my flex slot this week:Jonathan Stewart, Fred Taylor, Mike Williams (TB), or gamble on Mike Thomas (Jac)? Thanks for any advice.
Jim McCormick (3:47 PM)
I'd stick with Stewart if only because none of these other options are compelling. If the aim to beat this nemesis down, use the guy with the most upside, and that is Stewart even with the tough matchup.
I play in a deep league, 300 players rostered..and someone dropped Seahawk Mike Williams. Am I missing something or should I be running over my grandmother to go claim him?
Jim McCormick (3:48 PM)
Can't you swerve and spare her on the way?
What is going on with T.Gonz?
Jim McCormick (3:51 PM)
Man-o-pause? Not sure, just made that up, probably offensive somehow. Either way, he's getting up there, and I think that there might just me room for one major target in this offense with how much they aim to lean of the run. White is getting tons of looks, and while Gonzo will have some solid games, I'm not sure he's much different than Jason Witten for example -some nice reception games but no longer a major fantasy threat.
I would just like to continue my lobbying efforts for ESPN to have a Dynasty League chat. I play in a 16 team league where we each keep 22 players from year to year and most of the advice I see in ESPN chats doesnt translate to this type of league (which are becoming much more popular)
Jim McCormick (3:53 PM)
I hear you - and of course the advice doesn't translate because it's not specific to that format. But I'd answer them, I just honestly don't get many, Corey. I do agree there could be some space for it in our content somehow, we are certainly always willing to consider offering more content if it serves the interests of the reader - or at least I assume we are.
My head is saying start Sam Bradford but (for some reason) my gut keeps telling me... Charlie Batch Is it crazy to even think of starting Batch? Thanks!
Jim McCormick (3:55 PM)
JKay's body talks to him, like full on conversations, which is pretty interesting. I would say that it's kind of crazy that these are your options, but there are all kinds of leagues out there - so who knows? I'd play Bradford, kid has a big arm and has been proficient in getting the ball down field, a rarity for a rook.
I agree with Corey!!! Trying to figure out how much Dynasty cap money to spend on a guy like Vick gave me a headache!!!
Jim McCormick (3:56 PM)
We can look into it, Steve and Corey, thanks for the insight.
Arian Forster or J.Charles... Who ya got?
Jim McCormick (3:56 PM)
I would say Foster, many others on this staff might say Charles. I prefer the workhorse.
Mike (San Diego)
Is it stupid that I feel better having Frank Gore on my team after I look at his avatar on ESPN? He looks straight ticked like he wants to go out and punish somebody.
Jim McCormick (3:57 PM)
He really does, I think the variety of expressions on thumbnails is pretty entertaining. Check out David Harris from New York, angry looking cat.
Better value the rest of the year -Vick or Roethlisberger (after Roethlisbergers suspension, of course)?
Jim McCormick (3:58 PM)
I bet they end up pretty close from that point forward - especially since Vick's schedule gets really tough. No glaring difference to be expected.
Who is your top buy low candidate by position?
Jim McCormick (4:01 PM)
Knowing that it's early, these can change with a single performance - but I'd rather go after the players with simply devastated credit - like Shonn Greene, J. Stewart, Brandon Marshall, Brent Celek, even Favre, to an extent. I think there's discounts with these types, particularly if their owners are 0-2. But in general, I just hunt around my leagues for the vulnerable team's first, then I pick at their rosters. Fun times.
Hey Jim - last week you suggested I start D. Bowe over T. Hightower. It didn't turn out too well - you win some, lose some. Hightower or Tolbert this week?
Jim McCormick (4:03 PM)
Jeff from Texas crushing the vibes in here, but you are right man. Who are you to hold me accountable? But really, my bad man, I also was answering I believe before Beanie was a certain sit - that said, Bowe is sitting in most cases for me. So in this case- let's say that I'll give you a Yes-Beanie (is playing) and No-Beanie ranking: NB= go Timmy vs. Oak, YB= Go with Khalid El-Amin, I mean Tolbert. I made that way more complicated than it needed to be.
Do you think Greene still has top-20 RB value going forward?
Jim McCormick (4:05 PM)
I do, I really do. I think this is such a fluid season at the position and there are many shares etc, I think the volume of carries in New York will be abundant to get Greene back on track with some big outings.
buzzer beater - which Defense holds better against the run this week - Pittsburgh (against Caddy and co.) or Baltimore (against Hillis/Harrison)?
Jim McCormick (4:06 PM)
Great options here, but I like Baltimore's interior line a lot against the Browns in what could a very ugly drubbing.
Johnny Knox (Chicago)
I just got dropped for Keiland Williams in a 10 team league on a team that is very deep at WR. Was this a good move?
Jim McCormick (4:07 PM)
Knox should be owned, he's not to different than say a Malcolm Floyd - maybe a tad weaker as a weekly play - but in that he's good for a deep ball and 3-5 catches per.
Danny (Los Angeles)
How do people get their questions answered???? Thousands of messages??? I need to add WR depth to my team. Who has the most upside??? Jeremy Maclin, Louis Murphy or Jacoby Jones???
Jim McCormick (4:09 PM)
An incredible overuse of ?????? helps. I really just sift through, they move really fast (refresh fast really) and I queue some that seem to tackle common issues and dilemmas that owners seem to have. Maclin has the most upside and current production clip, stick with him - best situation of these three. The Jones breakout campaign is limited by Walter, who remains a viable asset to that passing game.
I must be asking the wrong questions! Pick 2 Felix Driver Clayton.
Jim McCormick (4:09 PM)
Clearly! Sit Felix!
Over Under 2 sacks for Clay Matthews this week?
Jim McCormick (4:10 PM)
Wow, I love that this is a completely realistic question. More on "CM3" in this week's D Up! I say it's a push, he gets two. I'm not sure people really get what this kid is about to do this season.
Frank A (TN)
Clay Matthews...next Patrick Willis? Close?
Jim McCormick (4:12 PM)
This is for Jimbo in Jim City, who is just hating on us defensive nerds, and making up cities. These players are so different it would be like saying that Dez Bryant is the next Steve Hutchinson. Maybe not that off, but he's more like the next DeMarcus Ware, or just the third Clay Matthews.
Many mock drafts suggested waiting on a TE bc there was a lot of "depth" at this position...Miller is not helping me...should I bail and pick up Keller? Thanks for ANY advice...
Jim McCormick (4:14 PM)
I think the depth was also considered to be parity at some point. I assume you mean Zach Miller, maybe Heath, not sure it matters, but I do like Keller, but I like Zach Miller more, but would cut bait on Heath for him. Zach and Dustin are similar to me, matchups would determine my play each week.
I know, I know... only week 3, but Megatron is making me nervous. What caliber RB can I expect in return if I trade him? Anybody you think I should target?
Jim McCormick (4:15 PM)
I can't suggest specific targets if only because it comes down to your league, dude - what I suggest is going through the league and search for that team that has the need for a Mega type talent at the position while also having a back that you would be comfortable getting back. I would say that you should aim high and see what's out there - work the phones/texts too, that helps.
Nathan (San Jose, CA)
Lightening Round! Would you start Manningham over Jonathan Stewart or Louis Murphy this week in a PPR?
Jim McCormick (4:16 PM)
Mario is nice but that Giants' passing game is hard to call, almost like a bizaro far-less potent New Orleans scheme - just never know who will get it, with Nicks playing the Colston role currently. I like Stewart still, despite the obvious concerns.
Would you drop Beanie the Weenie for Tolbert??
Jim McCormick (4:16 PM)
Jim McCormick (4:17 PM)
A few more here, then I'm out, if you have more questions or just want to insult me hit me up @JMcCormickESPN on Twitter. Lightning round...
Dwayne Bowe or Thomas Jones this week?
Jim McCormick (4:17 PM)
TJ - make Bowe earn his way back to your roster.
Vick or Brady this week?
Jim McCormick (4:18 PM)
You be everywhere Mr. Exclamation Point - go with Brady, even though that Bills secondary is competent, it's an angry New England team.
Nick N. (NJ)
0.5 ppr league, Jennings or Foster?
Jim McCormick (4:18 PM)
I prefer the feature back in most every case - Foster.
Hillis or Harrison?
Jim McCormick (4:21 PM)
I blame LeBron for this fractured running game - I saw that James Davis is expected to add to this awesome situation. Can I say I don't know? If only because I don't think they know, if anyone, I'd play Harrison since he has wheels, Hillis would be a short-TD play only it seems.
cutler or vick????
Jim McCormick (4:22 PM)
I'd go with Vick, Cutler has been amazing, don't get me wrong, but this Green Bay team did very well against him last season when they put 5-DBs in coverage, which they'll do again. This is close, but Vick is a nice bet to slash through this Jacksonville patchwork of a defense.
Trust Mendy as a #1 rb?
Jim McCormick (4:23 PM)
I think the idea of No.1 backs is dissipating - in that there are really only a few these days. He's close, we'll get a better feel when Ben returns, also remember that the opponents haven't been great so far.
Last Question!!! Least upside: Mike Thomas, Laurent Robinson, Mike Williams (Sea) or Lee Evans. Thanks Jim!
Jim McCormick (4:25 PM)
Bill is right, last question - went really long here - had a good time, thousands of questions poured in- I answered like an amazing 1.2 percent of them. For this one - I'd say Evans has the least, but it's very close with Robinson - I just think Buffalo is void of fantasy value as of now.
Jim McCormick (4:26 PM)
Good luck everyone, hit me up @JMcCormickESPN and I'll do my best to get back to you. Check out D Up! tomorrow and Go Pitt tonight!
