Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon Sports Nation. Already developing a slight case of carpal tunnel from writing about injuries all morning and into the afternoon...but I'm gonna tough it out here at the computer so that we can chat for the next hour. Glad to see so many of you have already joined us...
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Puddles came early to the chat. No need to say more than the name - everyone wondering the same thing.Lengthy explanation in the blog - but for chat purposes suffice it to say that cartilage injuries can be worse than rib fractures. Very painful and slower to heal. Will hurt with every breath. The key is resting enough early on to try to allow enough healing to get back. As a running QB this presents more probs than if he were a stay-in-the-pocket kind of guy b/c when you run, you breathe harder, therefore more pain. Can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks out, and then q will be effectiveness on return - and how he responds to first big hit.
Kweku Hayford (Buffalo, NY)
Fractures ribs sounds really bad for a running back...How long will Leseaon McCoy be out?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Kweku: And in the I-know-it-sounds-weird category, the fracture of a rib may not be as bad as a cartilage injury. McCoy also injured a lower rib so may be able to get extra padding to help protect. Can likely get injection pre-game. Would not be surprised for him to miss this week, might not be more.
hey stephania! whats the news on dmc? are we gonna see more of a split in carries even if he is healthy for sunday?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Jonathan: I think you will see more Bush, less DMC this week. Bush now feeling much better with thumb. DMC still sore Monday from HS. This is not the same HS he injured in camp, which in some ways is good, others not so much. Either way do not expect him full speed for Sunday.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Will Jay Cutler be back as the Quarterback for the Chicago Bears this week against Carolina?
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Chris: Unknown at this point. IT was an encouraging sign that he was at the practice facility on Monday, although it's unclear exactly what he was feeling. The first clue will be if he returns to practice b/c has to pass tests and be cleared just to get to practice.
mike (portland, oregon)
Hello Stephania, its 6:45 am and I need to get this Question in now due to the power being shut off due to new monitor work, I have Andre Johnson and Pierre Garcon in most of my lineups, do you see these injusrys being more than one week injuries?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Mike: Thanks for posting early. Garcon has now missed two weeks and with no practice at all in the last 2 weeks, it's hard to be optimistic. Johnson reportedly feels better after resting in Week 4 but won't practice until Thursday this week so we won't have much clue until later in the week- and he could be another gtd.
George (Alpharetta, GA)
With Vick down and Brady on a bye I need a QB. I am looking at Shaun Hill - do you think Stafford will be back this week from his shoulder injury?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
George: Don't think you have to worry about Stafford returning yet. Despite reports he was going to begin throwing last week, he did not and is just starting to do so this week. Lots of hurdles before can get back to game so don't expect it anytime soon.
Patrick (Bay Arreeaaaaa!!!)
Stephie Bad News....another tough loss for our beloved Niners :-/ I just sent away Ahmad Bradshaw in a trade because I have Pierre Thomas/D-McFadden as my Rbs...are either of them good to go this week..or should I start to panic?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Hey Patrick from the Bay Area: Well, you unloaded one of your 3 injured backs...tough spot. Thomas is too soon to say b/c they haven't really done much yet. Weds practice will be first report but Payton says he's "hopeful" to have him this week. They tested him before Sunday but he couldn't cut with running so did not play. At least encouraging that he could do straight ahead work. (We touched on DMC earlier). If I'm you though I'd be looking around for insurance.
whats the word on texans Jacoby jones
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
John: Calf strain which initially was referred to as "mild" by Gary Kubiak but later sounded like it might be a little worse than that. He's another one that you need to see if he can run in practice. Calf strains tend to be a little hard to tell how they're doing until a guy goes full speed so you may not get that hint until very late in the week. I would get a backup plan.
Michael (OP, KS)
Reports are saying Sidney Rice is still on crutches... can you offer any insight into when you'd expect a return from his injury given that piece of info? Still looking like Week 9? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Michael: It's a fair question - but without knowing specifically what the limitations are (since they haven't indicated specifically what he had done), it's hard to project until he's at least running. I've been concerned all along that he would not be back until later than expected b/c he was not scheduled to be cleared for football activities until at LEAST 8 weeks post-op. Has to get in game shape, etc and even doing cardio exercise won't prep him the same as running, hitting, etc.
0-4 (and Hurting )
Hey Stephania, SJax put up pretty good numbers. How healthy do you think he is? I was offered Jackson and Tomlinson for Chris Johnson, should I pull the trigger?
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
You have the same record as my poor Niners...yet for some reason I still have hope, for both of you.You bring up a good question about SJax - and for those who are upset about benching Jackson last week, all I can tell you is that he was not himself (by his own admission - go see Mike Sando's NFC West blog for the very revealing quotes from Jackson himself) and you could see it when he was running. That said, Jackson at 75% is still pretty good - but there was no way of knowing when he went into the game, how he was going to perform. Given that he did not feel 100% and that both he and his coach expressed concern about re-injury, I was surprised at how well he was able to do. But that's how it is with injuries. It's not a precise science - the team didn't even know how much they'd get from him until it was happening in the game. And I think he's better next week - but probably still not 100%.That said, I have a hard time trading away Chris Johnson - but it has to do with depth. If you've got no one behind him, then I do the trade. If you have another solid RB2, then I don't.
Starphania!I have a question that combines your FFB AND Injury knowledge! What is the maximum number of starters with injury concerns that you feel comfortable having on your team? Last week we saw (With Rice and Best to name a couple) that even owning a handcuff doesn't mean that ANY of them (starters or subs) are going to be decent starts!
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
David: Great follow to the last post. If I really like a guy and think he's coming back in a few weeks, I keep him. But I rarely, unless desperate, start an injured player. It's worth leaving points on the bench to me if I'm concerned about the injury b/c if he starts and doesn't do well, then I should have known it in advance (like Best). If he starts and does do well, well then I know I feel a whole lot better about him the following week.
Marcus (Washington DC)
I bow before the lovely Stephania...with McFadden and Portis banged up, who do you like most off the waiver wire? Bush or Torain? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Marcus: Sweet, not necessary. Look, I like Torain -was saying it before this week. Now with the injury to Portis - and him already saying he does not expect to play this week, I like Torain more. Portis could miss a couple weeks or more, he's already been struggling with the wrist.
Casey (Upper St. Clair)
Hi Stephania. Do you think Best's toe caused him any problems this past weekend, and do you think it will cause him any problems down the road? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Casey: Yes, despite Best's denials, I watched the game and I don't think his struggles with his footing were a coincidence. He slipped, fell, fumbled...it was not his greatest performance. I want to see what he does this week - but a typical Grade 2 turf toe would be problematic for more than a week. If he's still guarded in practice then I'm more concerned.
Byron (College Park, MD)
Hey Stephania, love your work! Any update on Moreno and his hamstring injury? Do you think he'll play this week?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Byron: Thanks so much - Moreno is on McDaniels "hopeful" list for practicing and returning this week, but it's early in Denver and we don't know what he's going to be able to do this week. Might not get a good clue on him until Friday.
30 minutes in...are you going to touch on Bradshaw's injury. Surely I'm not the first one to ask and this is an injury chat, not a "who should I pick up on the waiver" chat.
Stephania Bell (3:39 PM)
Matt - It's a chat for everyone -and the waiver questions have revolved around injury issues. And the reason for not hitting Bradshaw yet is I was hoping that results of his tests would come in while we were doing the chat...so that instead of saying "I don't know" which is what I have to say right now, the hope was that the newswire would have an update...I see that I needed to explain this - but for everyone else who's wondering, there's no update yet. Hopefully we get one before 4.
Andy (Charlotte, NC)
Hey Stephania, Owen Daniel's going foward...are the Texan's hyping up how great they think he is week by week coming off his injury just to keep defenses honest? Do you think he can return back to stardom?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Andy: Actually hearing some grumblings about how the Texans feel about Daniels right now. May not be altogether true - certainly not totally fair - often takes a while to get back to form after ACL surgery. Then there's the hamstring issue (also not uncommon post-ACL). I think he can get back to stardom but I wasn't expecting much until the second half. Now if it goes beyond the second half of the season...
Did the bye week help old man Favre any???
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Fred: Only if it helped Shiancoe. And all we know for sure is that Shiancoe didn't practice Monday but was running...so here's hoping.
How long do you expect Steve Smith's ankle sprain to keep him out for? Will he return after the bye in week 7?
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Dudo: Very good question. High ankle - and it looked bad based on Smith's reaction right away. His agent already saying he's likely to sit, then bye the next week as you mentioned, still iffy to me to get back in Week 7 but as you know, need to see how he's progressing. As a matter of course I would plan on a backup for 4 weeks.
Do you think Louis Murphy will play, and be effective this week... he would be my Wes Welker bye-week fill in. Thanks
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Daniel: I think it's risky. We saw what happened when he tried to play this week. He took another hit and got worse and then just became ineffective. Don't think that happens twice. Meaning - if he doesn't look quite a bit better by Thursday practice, I would not be surprised if he sits. I'd try to find another backup just in case.
If I ask her, she will answer...Baltimore held back Rice a lot last week. Caution or something more serious?
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Chris: Clever is good...I have to think it was just caution. Everything about what he did leading up to the game suggested he was ready to go. Now he said later that he knew he wouldn't start - but certainly no one made that statement up front. I think McGahee was playing well enough so the Ravens decided to go with it..and then when he took a hit to the head they had Rice doing more. I would expect Rice back to his usual carries this week.
MJD looking alright for this week (I realize it's early).
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Austin: Considering that MJD was limping big in the game but then went on to have a monster performance, it's awfully hard to tell with him. I still suspect he's fighting through some stuff but he insists he's not "injured" As long as he can show up on Sundays, I think you have to assume healthy.
Beanie held back because of knee, atrocious offense or both?
Stephania Bell (3:54 PM)
Chris: Apparently he's asking out loud about that as well. Complaining about his role. Never thought public complaining did much good - and quite frankly, when you're coming off surgery, I think you need to keep a lid on it. That said, I think the plan all along has been to push him into a heavier workload and I think that will be the case going forward.
Any news on Garcon? what exactly is keeping him out of games.......Any reason to keep him??
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
TC: It's a hamstring. And the Colts just don't talk about injuries. At all. But the suspicion is that the undisclosed injury from the preseason may have been the hamstring - and that this is now an exacerbation of it. If it's any help, I dropped him from my team b/c I'd rather get the help from elsewhere than wait on a very indefinite problem.
Whats up with Mathews and his elbow Is he safe start this week or should i use Tolbert
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
bamamarg: I don't think the elbow was ever a serious deal. Apparently he fell on it during practice, they padded it up- and the concern was that after being out with the ankle, and then the padding of the elbow, that if he got in the game and fumbled it would be bad for him. So since Tolbert was doing OK, ease him back into the game. Not what fantasy owners wanted. Now Turner says they do plan to lean heavily on Mathews going forward so hopefully that's the plan and they're sticking to it.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
Sorry gang. There is no update yet on Bradshaw's "further tests." Remember he had offseason surgery on both feet and played through foot fractures and a bad ankle last year. He's known for playing through pain and injury, but it's unclear how serious this particular one is. Once we know...we'll update you.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
Time for me to go. Check out my blog today on ESPN.com and another will come your way Thursday. We'll be chatting again on Friday at 3 pm EST. See you then!
