Mark "Guru" Garrow (2:22 PM)
Good afternoon everybody. We are going to get our little partaaayyy started a little late this afternoon. Please join me at 3:30 Eastern time. Can't wait to answer your questions. Guru out.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:32 PM)
Sorry for the delay today. Just found out I might have to have back surgery. Happy Birthday to me and let's get this partaaayyy started.
What are your thoughts on the passing of jeff byrd
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:33 PM)
That is a very big loss. He was a great ambassador for the sport but more importantly he was just a good guy and a good family man. He'll be missed at several levels because of that.
Matthew Long (NY)
What up Guru! Ok no BS, who is going to win this week?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:38 PM)
Well here's the deal Matthew, the last eight races have been won by either Jimmie Johnson or Denny Hamlin and then you throw in Jeff Gordon who has won 7 times at Martinsville and who has a single digit average finish even though he's run 35 races at Martinsville. So if I'm a betting man that's where I'd start with Hamlin a slight favorite. Two other guys off the radar screen that might be able to contend or have shown the ability to run up front at Martinsville lately are Tony Stewart who was I believe the last guy to win other than Hamlin and Johnson..Jeff Burton led 140 laps back in March and looked for a little while like he might be able to handle Hamlin but then he had a flat tire.
mike p (danbury ct)
goodafternoon mark, forget the 39 which droped from 3 to 4 188 out of first, all right listen, guru Is it going to be the 11 this weekif not who i do not have the 48,24, if not 11who else is there i need a win. I still have the 1,33,31,14,29 00twice. one question how do you see the 1 car running at homestead=honestly because remember iys triple points race originally you had helped me sort the guys to the track and we said, leave the 14 for last because of his record of 9.5 finish, but after this weekend i am really considering the mac man? I NEED A LITTLE DEEP THOGHT.THANKS LSTS GET THAT FIRST Win.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:42 PM)
Mike...this is the week to use Hamlin..his stats recently at Martinsville are off the hook..As I just pointed out his stats along with the 48 and 24..no one else is in the same zip code. 14 has won before at Martinsvile and 31 again very fast back in the spring..but I'd stick with Hamlin and I'd hang on to 14 and 1 and decide at Texas what to do...the good thing about these two and Homestead is that neither will be fighting for a championship and won't be stroking but going for it...You still have a little time to decide but if you have the 11 this is house.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win the 5-Hour Energy 250 at Gateway & the Tums Relief 500 at Martinsville?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:43 PM)
I think the Nationwide Series race will come down again to a duke out between Keselowski and Edwards..Keselowski will be driving like a demon to beat Carl because of what happened before so maybe give him a little edge..I'm going with Hamlin at Martinsville.
Nick Rolando (Orlando)
Pre-lim for M'ville of 11-33-31-83 (Almirola), Mark you think I should look at Newman or McMurray ahead of Bowyer or Burton?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:47 PM)
I've got Newman ranked just ahead of Bowyer in my pre-race top-30 so they are about a coin flip..both lately have been top-10 machines at Martinsville..After the way Burton ran in March I wouldn't put McMurray ahead of him there...as for Almirola..first time he's driven for that team and Team Red Bull not known for their short track program so I'm not sure I would go there.
advise on a pre race b driver that may make some noise @ martinsville. who do you think may be a strong b driver?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:48 PM)
Here's my pre-race top-30 rankings..you'll see that among the "B" drivers I like Newman, McMurray, Logano, Truex, and Martin..1.Jimmie Johnson2.Denny Hamlin3.Jeff Gordon4.Tony Stewart5.Jeff Burton6.Ryan Newman7.Clint Bowyer8.Kevin Harvick9.Greg Biffle10.Jamie McMurray11.Jamie Logano12.Carl Edwards13.Kyle Busch14.Martin Truex, Jr.15.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.16.David Reutimann17.MarkMartin18.Brad Keselowski19.Juan Pablo Montoya20.Matt Kenseth21.Paul Menard22.Kasey Kahne23.Kurt Busch24.Marcos Ambrose25.A.J. Allmendinger26.David Ragan27.David Gilliland28.Sam Hornish, Jr.29.Elliott Sadler30.Travis Kvapil
Since our season went up in smoke last weekend thanks to NEWMAN and Kahne, we are looking for a good sleeper this week. What are your thoughts on Aric Amirola? I hear he is going to be in the 83 and Mr. Hendrick considers him a pretty good driver. How do you see him finishing?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:50 PM)
Andy, Almirola is a good little driver and he'll also be running the truck race at Martinsville so that will give him some extra laps and that should be helpful..but Team Red Bull's short track program is good but not great...first time Almirola will be driving for them...just a lot of questions for me.
Guru! Between Kahne and Newman, I took one on the chin last week, and really need to make up some lost ground. Can Sorenson, Mears or Labonte get a top 20 at martinsville?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:51 PM)
You and me brother...I feel your pain..Sorenson isn't running Martinsville. He'll be at Gateway so Aric Almirola takes his place in the 83...Mears and Labonte I feel more comfortable looking at them as potential top-25 and not top-20..
RAY GORDON REID ( ARLINGTON VA 22011)
QUESTION TO MARK GURU GARROW AT 3.25PM WEDNESDAY GURU WHO DOES THEVIRGINIA GURU HAVEFORSUNDAY AT MARTINSVIILE
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:52 PM)
Hey everybody...welcome Ray Gordon back into the house!...Hamlin's the man with Jimmie Johnson giving him all he can handle...
Mark: Dont you agree that if the 24 is going to win this year, this weekend offers his best opportunity
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:53 PM)
I think this weekend is potentially a place he can get it done, but I also see Phoenix as a potential track to get back to victory lane too. Remember earlier this year he gave the race away at Phoenix to Ryan Newman.
Guru, what "B" drivers are you looking at to fill out your lineup for Martinsville? Does the 39 and 20 seem good to you or should I be looking somewhere else?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:55 PM)
Ed..I'm looking at the 39 first because of what he's done lately at Martinsville and then almost a toss-up between McMurray and Logano..Logano was second there in March..it will be interesting to see if he can match that...one thing about Martinsville..flat track where you have way more motor and not enough tire...that's basically how Logano trained for Cup when he was racing Legends cars, which are all motor and no tire..
Guru,Sorry to hear about the back problem, hopefully a good core therapy program will work for you, as it did for me, and the need for surgery can be avoided. It seemed as though the 43 team was on their game of late, but do you see the upheaval this past week effecting both teams negatively? Thanks as always.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:57 PM)
Thanks for the thought Richard...it's a pretty bad rupture/tear...they're going to try a couple of steroid shots to see if that can give me any long term relief along with excercise program...if not soon as season ends under the knife I go so I can be ready for Daytona..I think the 43 team has been coming on pretty strong and I really don't see that changing because of the recent issues..
Big T (TN)
Happy birthday, My sons birthday is tomorrow he will be eleven.Use 1 start left for JJ, Use him this week or save him for another track,(such as Phoenix? 2 starts left for Denny, Use him this week and what other track should I use him ?
Mark "Guru" Garrow (3:59 PM)
Well tell your son "The Guru" sends out some B-day props and hopes for many more....I'd save Jimmie and go with Hamlin..as for what other race for Hamlin..would have to be one coming up soon because the deeper he goes into the Chase the more careful first - pass second he'll have to be..Maybe Texas..but you have time to figure that out..take care Big T.
Guru, Your thoughts on the fact that in the spring, 8 of the top ten qualified outside the top ten. and last fall 8 of top ten qualified tenth or worse. Would think that qualifying would be more a factor here. Thanks
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:00 PM)
It usually is Richard but teams have been working hard at using track position tricks early and often at Martinsville and that has changed the competition there quite a bit.
Big T (wyoming)
Guru, I need a pick between Mears and Almirola also who would be your prerace pick between Gillilland, LaBonte, and Kvapil? Also thinking of going with Brad K. over Ambrose but not sure on this one.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:03 PM)
Are you sure Mears and Almirola...I guess I'd go with Almirola...Vickers ran sixth in the 83 back in March..Almirola isn't in his category and it will be first race with the team and they have changed crew chiefs since then..but I guess I'd lean there..Gilliland is a good little flat tracker so I'd give him the edge in that group...Ambrose was 11th, BradK 12 in March..I like Ambrose a little better because you charge the corner and using heavy breaking at Martinsville..much like a road racer and we all know what kind of road racer Ambrose is.
Joe (Red Bank NJ)
Guru, caught the 30 for 30 on Tim Richmond last night. Have you had a chance to check it out? Interesting stuff.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:05 PM)
No I didn't Joe and I'm mad I didn't set my VCR. I hear ESPN 2 is airing it again tonight. He came along about the time I was starting in this business so I lived some of the deal with Richmond..The boy was half crazy and could really drive a race car..I hated what happened to him because if he had lived he would have taken us to Hollywood..he was that much of a character.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:07 PM)
For those who might have joined late..here again is my pre-race top-30 rankings.............1.Jimmie Johnson2.Denny Hamlin3.Jeff Gordon4.Tony Stewart5.Jeff Burton6.Ryan Newman7.Clint Bowyer8.Kevin Harvick9.Greg Biffle10.Jamie McMurray11.Jamie Logano12.Carl Edwards13.Kyle Busch14.Martin Truex, Jr.15.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.16.David Reutimann17.MarkMartin18.Brad Keselowski19.Juan Pablo Montoya20.Matt Kenseth21.Paul Menard22.Kasey Kahne23.Kurt Busch24.Marcos Ambrose25.A.J. Allmendinger26.David Ragan27.David Gilliland28.Sam Hornish, Jr.29.Elliott Sadler30.Travis Kvapil
Big T (TN)
2 starts left for Jeff Gordon and 2 starts left for Kevin Harvick, 1 left for Ryan newman. Your thoughts on wher to use these drivers to gain maximum points. Thanks
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:14 PM)
Well Gordon is going to be good at Martinsville and Phoenix...and always has the potential to jump up and do something in a plate race..but that is a wild card..Harvick is plate race material..he has a real knack for it..Newman will be top-10 material at Martinsville and perhaps top-5 at Phoenix...
Big T (TN)
In your top 30,(Jamie Logano) ? lol
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:14 PM)
Big T (wyoming)
Mark would you pick Lagano over JPM? I am leaning that way.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:17 PM)
I would probably lean Logano over JPM like you too..
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:18 PM)
Folks...got to run...don't forget our race day chat will begin Sunday morning at 9:30 from Martinsville..until then have a great week and may the force be with you...Don't want to say it but got to "The Guru has left the building!"
Mark (Richlandtown PA)
Mark, good day, Happy Bday. If you think you took a beating last week, I had 3 drivers go down and ended at 447, I need a BIG week...... Take care of the back.
Mark "Guru" Garrow (4:20 PM)
Oops..saw one last post...by the way B-day was just a joke in reference to my back surgery...real one is 9/13.....I didn't get hit that bad Mark but got hurt real bad again..and like you I need a BIG week too..
