Adam Schefter (2:25 PM)
Hello, everyone. Thank you for paricipating in another Friday chat. Hoping to get to as many of your questions as possible in the next 30 minutes. Let's have some fun.
Jon (Des Moines, IA)
Adam, I see you were the only one to pick the Panthers this weekend. With word that Williams is probably out, do you feel like Stewart will finally break out of his season-long slumber and help his team (and countless fantasy teams)?? Is he someone who should be played over the likes of Felix Jones, etc?
Adam Schefter (2:29 PM)
Jon: We're already starting in with fantasy questions? Can't say whether Stewart will outperform Jones or Jones outperform Stewart. But I will say this: DeAngelo Williams didn't practice again today. It's not looking promising for him for Sunday. And so for the Panthers to win on the road, without Williams, Stewart will have to have a big day. and it feels like he is due for one being that he has yet to explode this season. Doesn't mean Jones won't have a good day, also -- who knows how Dallas' offense will evolve with Jon Kitna in charge. But I like Stewart to finally post some good numbers (and not just because he changed the avatar on his Twitter account this week).
Who starts in the slot for the Colts on Monday? White or Gonzo
Adam Schefter (2:30 PM)
Todd: I'm guessing that Blair White starts in the slot, and Gonzo gets playing time, too. And everybody's waiting to see whether White, Gonzo and Jacob Tamme can help Austin Collie and Dallas Clark. But remember this: outside of Peyton Manning, Clark was the Colts second most valuable player. They're going to really miss him. Time for some other players to step up.
Who are the rising young off/def coordinators that could become head coaches next year?
Adam Schefter (2:33 PM)
Matt: The first name that comes to mind is Leslie Frazier with the Vikings. He'll get his chance soon enough. So will Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Rob Ryan of the Browns is making some noise this year, and his brother Rex's success has to help him. And I'm a fan of Patriots linebackers coach Matt Patricia, though he probably will have to serve as a coordinator first.
Hey Shefty - any chance the 49ers have Jon Gruden patrolling the sidelines next year? I know he's your colleague, and I think he does a great job on MNF. I think he'd be HUGE for that organization.
Adam Schefter (2:34 PM)
Scott: Jon Gruden has coaching in his soul. As good as he is in the booth, I'm fully expecting teams to make a run at him this off-season and give him a very difficult decision. But for the right situation, with the right organization, I think Gruden bolts the Monday Night booth and heads back to the sideline. And San Francisco would have to make a run at him -- whether he would be interested is another matter. But if he wanted, he can stay behind and be this decade's John Madden. Good spot to be in.
Golly, it sure seems like Jeff Fischer is leading his own investigation team into Kenny Britt's situation? Any idea on whether Britt plays Sunday?
Adam Schefter (2:37 PM)
John: If he played last Sunday, it is fully expected that he will play last Sunday. Last week the Titans held him out for four series -- and all Britt did was have the best game any receiver has had this season. My understanding was that Britt was assisting others and he might be able to avoid trouble here -- but keep in mind, I didn't do any detective work like Coach Fisher. If Britt doesn't avoid trouble, he then will have a price to pay with the NFL and Detective Fisher.
Jeff (Los Angeles)
Chances of Cowboys going after Gruden? V. Jackson back to the chargers?
Adam Schefter (2:38 PM)
Vincent Jackson has to be back by tomorrow, Jeff, so at some point in the next 24 hours, Jackson will report. As for Gruden, I see where this chat -- and other future chats -- will be going. Gruden heavy. The funny part is, the Buccaneers and many fans in Tampa Bay didn't want him around anymore. And now there are fans clamoring for him to come to their city. Funny stuff.
What about Brian Billick? He has made no secret of the fact that he wants to return to coaching.
Adam Schefter (2:39 PM)
He does want to return to coaching, Dave. The question is whether someone will hire him. I think he'd be an attractive coaching candidate to some organizations. There usually are six, seven teams on average that make coaching changes during the off-season. This off-season could be slightly skewed because of the lack of a collective bargaining agreement. But some teams will look at Billick.
ADAM, IF THE COWBOYS LOOSE THIS WEEKAND TO THE JAGUARS DO YOU THING THE COWBOYS PLAYOFFS CHANGES WILL SLIP AWAY AND MAYBE START LOOKING FOR A NEW COACH CAUSE QUIET FRANKLLY I AM GETTING TIRED OF WADE PHILLIPS FACE EVERY TIME THEY MAKE A MISTAKE WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY WE NEED A NEW COACH I DON'T CARE WANT JERRY SAYS ABOUT IT.
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
Scott: NEWS FLASH. THE COWBOYS PLAYOFF HOPES ALREADY HAVE SLIPPER AWAY. (LET'S GET BACK TO REALITY AND LOWER-CASE LETTER NOW). It's hard to imagine losing a starting quarterback while your team has a 1-5 record and still making the playoffs. It's not out of the question, but I wouldn't have my hopes up. As for the coach, Jerry Jones has said he is not making a move in season. So it sounds like you'll have to wait until late December, early January before hearing any Cowboys coaching news. And yes, Jerry has to make a run at Gruden.
Ryan (Germantown, MD)
Hey Adam, do you think the Giants can clean up their turnover issues during the bye?
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
Ryan: They're 5-2. They're in first place. They're having a better season than many thought. It's all good. Clean it up? Sure, they'll try. They've already been working with Ahmad Bradshaw on holding the football and it's not like Eli Manning doesn't know that he has to make some better decisions. But let's cut this team some slack and salute it for its 5-2 start.
Will John Gruden coach either the Cowboys or the 49ers next year?
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Bring on more Gruden questions! Love it.Again, it's up to a good organization to lure him back to the sideline. You tell me whether you think the Cowboys or Niners can do that?
Nick (Middletown, NJ) [via mobile]
Are we going to see another great performance from Stevie Johnson and Lee Evans?
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
An admission, Nick. Twice I've picked up Steve Johnson on my fantasy team and twice I've cut him. I'm so angry at myself. This week I lost him on waivers in our ESPN.com fantasy league to Mark Schlereth. Fire me as a coach. And my fantasy team needs to look to hire someone else -- maybe Jon Gruden? And yes, I think Johnson and Evans will keep going. And don't forget Ryan Fitzpatrick, another QB I had on my roster and foolishly cut. Guy is a total fantasy stud this season. And I cut him. GRUDEN!!!!!
David Harms (Troy, MI)
Does Tony Romo just need a new change of scenery?
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
No, David. Tony Romo gets criticized as much or more than any other quality quarterback in the league. If he needed a change of scenery, Dallas' slump would be prolonged. Romo isn't going anywhere. Some other changes can help that franchise. Changing quarterbacks is not one.
The more Brad Childress opens his mouth, the less I like him. If you were coaching the Vikes, does Favre start this weekend?
Adam Schefter (2:50 PM)
J.B. -- Yes. Done. As much as drama follows him, Favre still gives the Vikings the best chance to win. And I'm not going down in history as the QB that benched him. Dohn't want that on my resume.
David Harms (Troy, MI)
Will all hell break lose if Brett Favre does not start this sunday?
Adam Schefter (2:51 PM)
Oh yeah, David. The relationship between Favre and Childress is strained now. Can you imagine what would happen if Childress started TJax on Sunday? We'd have material for every Sportscenter next week -- and maybe the rest of the season. I still think, ultimately, Favre starts. But I also think Childress is tempted to go with Jackson.
How do you think Miami's run game will do. Will they finally have a 100 yards?
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
Micah: The Dolphins running game has been a disappointment this season. I'm a fan of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Two tough guys, two old pros. But that team's running game has not been as stellar as in other seasons for whatever reason. I guess Miami got what it wanted -- a big-name receiver. But it seems to have lost its running game.
Wing Ho (NYC)
my overrated Cowboys shuld go back and get jimmy johnson :)
Adam Schefter (2:53 PM)
wait, what about Gruden, Wing Ho? Actually like the Jimmy Johnson idea. But Jimmy Johnson doesn't, which is the problem.
I'd take Gruden in Minnesota. The guy they have now may be a good chauffeur but as a head coach, not so much.
Adam Schefter (2:53 PM)
GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN! GRU-DEN!
THIS GUY! (Grudenville)
Any info on Logan Mankins? Will he come back and be willing to play?
Adam Schefter (2:54 PM)
He'll be back next month, THIS GUY in Grudenville. He has to take the uncertainty out of the collective bargaining agreement and make it a certainty that he'll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. He'll be back in a couple of weeks.
Who is the best team in the AFC in your opinion? I say the injured colts. As long as you have 18, you can beat anybody in this league. Thanks for your time.
Adam Schefter (2:56 PM)
18 is the great equalizer, Tyler. And there's no player in the league that I'd rather have. But Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New England and the Jets are better teams than the Colts right now. Indianapolis just has too many injuries at too many key spots. But I hear your point loud and clear. Any team with 18 always has a chance. All right everyone, have to go do the 3 p.m. Sportscenter, where Favre is as popular there as Gruden is here. Have a great weekend, thanks for participating and enjoy this weekend's games --Adam
