Adam Schefter (2:29 PM)
OK, everyone, let's try to get to as many questions as possible before the 3 pm Sportscenter on ESPNNews. Look forward to it.
Chris (Myrtle Beach, SC)
Can you give me any insight into whether Austin Collie plans to play this week? Also, do you think James Jones or Jordy Nelson has a better game with D.Driver out this sunday?
Adam Schefter (2:30 PM)
Chris: Sounds like Austin Collie is on track to play. He's practiced the past couple of days and looks like he could be a go on Sunday. As for the Packers wide receivers, I think Aaron Rodgers will spread it around. I think Jones will get a bit more -- he has seemed to lately -- but as soon as I say that, and this is why I hate giving fantasy tips, Nelson will go off, have the game off his life, and I'll be the jerk that steered you towards Jones. Your call.
I am on the "Give Childress the Boot" bandwagon... when will we finally have our dream realized?
Adam Schefter (2:31 PM)
You and a lot of others, Jeff. Childress has lost support in Minnesota. What has prevented it from happening is the four-year contract he signed last year. If that contract weren't done, Childress would be. The question is whether the Wilfs will be willing to eat that money -- and how much of it. My guess is if the team doesn't turn it around this season, you'll get your wish this off-season.
Do you think the packers will activate Al Harris or Atari Bigby?
Adam Schefter (2:33 PM)
Sounds like they're getting close to doing that, Kyle. They now have one open roster spot and they could activate Harris or Bigby for Sunday. But it sounds like it won't be long before we see, either. Decision has to be made by Monday. But the truth is, Green Bay's young DBs have been impressive, especially Tramon Williams. It's not exactly like this team is clamoring for either player right now, but each will undoubtedly help.
Where will payton manning rank amoung the greateest plaers of all time. Currently he is 8th.
Adam Schefter (2:34 PM)
Hard to compare him to Jim Brown or Jerry Rice or Lawrence Taylor, Ryan. But it's fair to say that if Manning continues like this for another four or five years, he will go down as the greatest quarterback ever to play the game. And that's a lofty enough distinction.
Does Dallas finally draft a O lineman first in ths draft or maybe a safety? Do you think we can get Bill Cower?
Adam Schefter (2:35 PM)
John: It's fair to expect Dallas to go big-coach hunting. Whether that's Bill Cowher or John Fox or Jon Gruden or someone else, many people think Jerry Jones will go for the Coaching Caviar. And hard to say who the Cowboys will draft in early November. But you picked two positions in which they could certainly use help.
Adam - I read about a streak today in the NFL. It's a streak that I'm very surprised hasn't been talked about more at the college or NFL level. The exact quote from the article - "The University of Miami's impressive streak of former players scoring touchdowns in the NFL continued in Week 8 as Frank Gore scored a touchdown against Denver on Sunday. At least one former 'Cane has now scored a touchdown every NFL week since Week 15 of the 2002 season - a span of 130 straight weeks."That seems like a VERY impressive streak. Almost 8 years straight a former Hurricane has scored a TD in the NFL in every single week. Why is this not talked about more? Are there any other schools that even come close to that? Thanks, and love your work!
Adam Schefter (2:37 PM)
If that is true, that is very impressive. There are enough candidates: Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey. But still, that is impressive, Wes, and you just talked about it. I need to confirm if that is true and if it is, I will talk more about it.
Keith (Lawrence Ma)
Hi Adam-who starts at QB this week for the Raiders?
Adam Schefter (2:38 PM)
Going to be Jason Campbell, Keith. Then next week the Raiders have a bye. And it will not surprise anyone if Bruce Gradkowski is back in the starting lineup the next week.
Didn't you go on record saying that Gerald McCoy was going to be a better pro then Suh?
Adam Schefter (2:39 PM)
Don't remember being "on the record" as saying that, James, but maybe I did. I thought McCoy might be a safer pick than Suh, but so far, it looks like Suh is a wrecking machine. If I was on the record with that, I was wrong to this point. But let's let the two careers play themselves out and we'll see how they compare over time. Suh's already great and McCoy is going to be great.
Jon (Dayton, oh)
do you think Nnamdi Asomugha will be ready for sunday?
Adam Schefter (2:40 PM)
My guess is no, Jon. He practiced earlier in the week, then missed some practice time. It was touch and go with him but with an ankle sprain, the Raiders know they have a bye next week. As important as this game is, it might be prudent to rest Asomugha for one game and get two weeks of rest. That'd be my hunch as to what happens.
You're seriously picking Cleveland to beat the Patriots? I guess I understand the "trap game" mentality but in this case you really think Belichick is going to lose to Mangini?
Adam Schefter (2:41 PM)
Ted: Did you think that Cleveland would be able to beat any of the defending Super Bowl champions in each of the past three years? It's just a pick. Maybe it'll be right, maybe it'll be wrong. I just think Cleveland coming off a bye, with its crafty ways of winning, is going to be a tough out. Still think that New England right now is the best team in the league with the best record. But I think we've all seen in this league that you never know on Sunday.
How close is Sidney Rice to returning to game action? It would seem that Childress had to consider Rice's return before cutting Moss loose, or maybe he just needed to fire someone...
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
Sounds like he's a couple weeks away, at least, Turftoe. But the Vikings think he'll be able to contribute this season at some point. When and how much are two questions that even the franchise would struggle to answer. But the feeling is two, three weeks away for Rice.
Ndamukong Suh (Detroit)
Will the Jets be able to run on us this week?
Adam Schefter (2:43 PM)
First and foremost, props on your rookie season, Ndamukong. And at the risk of having you come after me, I think the Jets will be able to run on you some. But still, at some point, Mark Sanchez is going to have to make some plays to beat you. And something tells me you'll be coming after him pretty hard. Good luck in getting there.
Mike (San Diego)
Why is the Panthers ground game so terrible compared to last year?
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
Great question, Mike. My guess is it has to do with the subpar play that the team has gotten from the QB position. Teams can stack the line against Carolina and force them to throw, which they've done. And because the Panthers have had such little success in the air this season, it has hurt the running game some.
Adam, What do you think about the bit after, where Sabol pointed out that more than half of the players on the list were from 5 teams, and only 4 players were on teams that remained under .500 for their career?
Adam Schefter (2:45 PM)
Not surprised, RJ. That's how it is in football and probably any sport. We remember winners. Not so much the losers.
Adam!!! Whats up man..iv'e been at work all day with ESPN open..I LOVE IT. Help me this week man I know you know all things football. In my fantasy team, should I feel comfortable playing Mike Williams or Collie this week? Peace
Adam Schefter (2:46 PM)
Hate giving fantasy tips, Chris. Too much guilt if I'm wrong. My job is to provide information and then you can make the decision. I got enough stress in my life to worry about someone else's fantasy team, which I would. Saying that, I have Mike Williams on one of my two fantasy teams, and the guy has been lights out all season. But I love Collie, too. You have a tough, but good, call there.
Give Childress the Boot (Bandwagon)
Adam Schefter (2:47 PM)
Consider your voice heard, GCTB.
Adam, am I the only one that thinks there is a chance that the Vikes could rally in the face of all this adversity? That which does not kill me only makes me stronger right? Arizona seems like a great game for both the Offense and Defense to gain a ton of confidence.
Adam Schefter (2:48 PM)
I'm with you, Pete. I still think the Vikings might just be the most dangerous team in that division, though the Packers are tough and the Lions are up and coming. But I still think the Vikings will have a run in them to make this season interesting for Minnesota. It's a dangerous team (which would have been more dangerous with Randy Moss).
Hey Adam, thanks for being the hardest working guy at ESPN. Do you think Jahvid Best will have a bigger second half than Ray Rice?
Adam Schefter (2:49 PM)
Thanks for kind words, Steve. My guess would be that Rice will get better as the season goes on and Best will wear down as the season goes on, as some rookies do. Not too many people know this, but Best was battling turf toe on both feet, not just one, as was reported. Since he came down with turf toe on both feet, he has not scored a touchdown. But the guy is an electric playmaker, and the most dynamic running back in Detroit since Barry Sanders. But think I'd ride Rice for this season's second half.
Why was Myron Pryor from the Pats fined so late for the hit on old man Favre? Was it an illegal hit in your eyes?
Adam Schefter (2:50 PM)
Perfectly legal hit, Ed. Nothing illegal about it. But I think there is an unspoken rule in the NFL: Bust open Brett Favre's chin, expect to get hit back. The league hit back today -- to the tune of $7,500.
SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)
Lions over Jets / Bengals over Steelers. Which is more likely to happen?
Adam Schefter (2:50 PM)
Lions over Jets, SteveFitz. I like the Lions. This has not seemed like the Bengals season.
Mark (St Louis)
Adam, who do you like for a survivor pool pick this week: Atlanta, Minnesota, or NYG (or the Jets but I dont trust it)?
Adam Schefter (2:51 PM)
You sound like my brother in law, Mark, asking for me for survivor pool tips. Being that I've helped him get to this point, and he would have been out by now, I can't feel guilty steering him to a tam only to see it lose. The team I steered hi to this week was Minnesota (which almost assures a Cardinals victory).
rob cagley (shreveport, la)
Jon Gruden for the Cowboys? He took a team that just played in the Superbowl and turned them into a loser. I love Gruden in the booth, that's where he should stay. I say talk Jimmy Johnson out of retirement...that would be Caviar.
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
Rob: Don't see Jerry eating that caviar, Rob. But I think he'd like a bite of the Gruden caviar.
When do you see Jerry Jones making some coaching moves?
Adam Schefter (2:52 PM)
We have to take him at his word, Matt. He said he would not do it in season.
Adam, how do you do it? I check espn.com all day, you put out videos in the morning, chats in the afternoon and articles all the time. Got alot of respect for you friend! Do you think P Harvin is going to continue to produce at such a high rate with the loss? Your deep down opinion? Thanks
Adam Schefter (2:54 PM)
It's the job, James, and I'm fortunate enough to love what I do. Anway, sounds like Harvin is very shaky this week (won't play him on my team, sounds too problematic). As I'm typing this, I just saw that Mort and Trent Dilfer made a fantasy trade in our league -- Mort traded Jon Kitna to Dilfer for Jordy Nelson. That tells me that Mort knows something about Jordy Nelson, and I might need to revise the statement I made earlier about James Jones. Mort doesn't make these deals willy-nilly.
LeGarrette Blount (Tampa Bay)
Will i be a force to be reckoned with in the second half of the season?
Adam Schefter (2:55 PM)
You kidding, LeGarrette? Picked you up on my fantasy team two weeks ago and am mighty happy I did. You've become the featured back in Tampa, on a team that likes to run the football. You were a force the past two weeks and I believe you will continue to be the second half -- which is why I've turned down trade offers for you.
Do the Bills get their first tally in the 'W' column this week?
Adam Schefter (2:57 PM)
Think this could be the week, Bryan. I picked the Bills in my weekly picks, for whatever that's worth. But my picks have not been good this season, so that probably means Chicago is safe.Anyway, have to go to do Sportscenter and get ready for Sunday NFL Countdown, 11 am EST. Please tune in, and have a great weekend.--Adam
