Chris Sheridan (1:59 PM)
Good afternoon from New York, half a world away from Besiktas Turka Cola Arena, where I spent half my summer (covering Team USA, which practiced at their gym) and where Allen Iverson will spend his winter, now that he has arrived in Istanbul to a hero's welcome. Then again, would anyone be surprised if AI lasted less than a month there? Go ahead and include an over/under prediction for how many days Iverson lasts with Besiktas along with your question(s) on any other NBA topics, and you will receive preferential treatment in getting your question posted.
Gabe (Brooklyn, NY)
Hi Chris, wodnering what you think Rip Hamilton's chances of being traded are. No way he's not disgruntled, and I think he's got some quality playoff basketball left in the tank, if only he could be moved to provide some veteran shooting guard clutch to a team with a quality point guards but lacking great 2s like the Bulls, Jazz, Hornets, or Thunder. What do you think?
Chris Sheridan (2:01 PM)
Of all those teams you mentioned, I think he would be a perfect fit for the Thunder -- but making the salaries match to make it work cap-wise (if you are Detroit, you start by asking for Jeff Green, and add on from there) would be a problem unless Detroit only wants expirings of Collison and Peterson. But if Okla Cty learned anything from their beatdown last night at the hands of the Celtics, it is that they are still a full level below the NBA's elite. And you are correct, they do have a hole at the 2.
matt (lansing, mi)
Will kyle lowry play this week, or more ish smith?
Chris Sheridan (2:02 PM)
Haven't seen a medical update on Lowry, but Rockets released a statement today saying Brooks out a MINIMUM of four weeks. So there will be some level of Ish every night for a month for the Southwest Division's biggest disappointment this far.
Chris, how do I temper my expectations as a Jazz fan? I think we can be really good when Okur is back. Am I wrong?
Chris Sheridan (2:07 PM)
They really do need Okur to space the floor, specially with Korver gone, too, and you should temper your enthusiasm over the way things have gone thus far. Had to struggle to beat Clips. AK has been running very hot and cold, but Millsap has been terrific. But in the long run, once they acclimate themselves to Al Jefferson a little more, they should emerge as a top 4 West team.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Do you think the Thunder should go looking for a SG or a PG? Westbrook is really good, but I think he's more of a 2.
Chris Sheridan (2:09 PM)
He played 2 at UCLA, and he played some 2 for Team USA over the summer, but his explosiveness with the ball and his ability to get to the rim and finish are point guard characteristics that make him what he is.
Kyle (A LeBron-less Cleveland)
Any idea what to make of this team? Other than the Toronto game, they've been entertaining to watch.
Chris Sheridan (2:11 PM)
I don't like the new font on their jerseys, and they were more fun to watch over the past 5 years. That being said, it is interesting to see D.Gibson emerge as a go-to guy now that someone has to take over that role.
I give A.I. a month in Turkey. Now that we have a more organized D-League can we relagate the T-Wolves there? And make them surrender Kevin Love to a team that will play him more?
Chris Sheridan (2:12 PM)
Funny post, to which I reply with a question: Which happens first: Iverson bails on Turkey, or Pekovic replaces Milicic as the starting center in Minny?
Over/Under Iverson is 6 weeks - Explain Evan Turner to me, a few weeks ago it seemed he was gonna struggle for minutes and was labeled a bust, now he is starting and playing well. Thanks.
Chris Sheridan (2:16 PM)
Saw him at MSG yesterday when he got extended minutes with Iggy sidelined. Anybody labeling him a bust is speaking a little too soon, wouldn't you say? They've played seven games. The thing to watch with him this year is how they figure ways to get him shots, because Iguodala and Lou Williams dominate the ball so much when they have it, and you have to keep feeding Elton Brand with the way they've been playing. If they did not lose that heartbreaker against Washington in OT, we'd be talking them up a little more as a team that may surprise a few people. Give D.Collins a little time and see how he works this thing.
Is this the best Lakers team since show time?
Chris Sheridan (2:17 PM)
They were my pick to win the title (over Boston), and suffice to say I am confident in that pick. They are 70-win material.
Doug Collins said Jrue Holiday will be a top 10 PG in this league. Thoughts?
Chris Sheridan (2:19 PM)
Maybe in 2-3 years. Not now. He's top 30 material. Need to get in on a Hollinger chat to get more Jrue love than I am prepared to dispense.
So are the Rockets the best 1-5 team ever? I still wouldnt want to play them in the first round (Yes they will get into the playoffs)
Chris Sheridan (2:23 PM)
Dallas started 0-4 five years ago and made the finals, so you can't get too down on them for their 0-5 start. But the Yao restrictions make them a very different team on a night-to-night basis, and that is tough on both the players and the coaching staff. That being said, if they can have Yao at something near 90 percent by April, they will be a tough playoff opponent for anyone -- and that includes L.A. At full strength, I still believe they match up better with the Lakers than any other team in the West.
Nicholas (Hattiesburg, MS)
So tell me that you're not impressed with the Hornets start especially with the competition they've beaten. Can you give me a top 4 in the West prediction for the playoffs if Paul stays healthy?
Chris Sheridan (2:27 PM)
The Hornets' start is certainly the biggest positive surprise through the first two weeks of the season, even bigger than Atlanta's start. I'm not ready to anoint them Top 4 status yet, though. Too many good teams out there, and too little of a body of work for us to base broad judgments on. I will concede that E.Okafor has really impressed me so far, probably as much as any player in the West (and yes, Warriors fans, that includes Dorell Wright).
James (Los Angeles)
Chris, Miami has only played 7 games and I think that when they start to gel you will see a team that will play with LA in the end? Your thoughts?
Chris Sheridan (2:29 PM)
I think Boston, at full strength, is a better constructed team, and I would pick Celtics over Heat in 6 or 7 if they played in the East playoffs.
How long do you think until the Heat start shopping around for a new PG?
Chris Sheridan (2:30 PM)
Better question: How long until Carlos Arroyo, who slows them down, is replaced in the starting five by a shooter such James Jones? D.Wade and L.James play like points anyway, and Arroyo can't shoot.
Jacob Engel (Gainesville, Fl)
Chris, its obvious the Heat need a big, physical center to help match up with Orlando, Boston, and the L.A. Why isn't Pat Riley putting more consideration towards acquiring Erik Dampier? He wants to come and he would help the Heat in their weakest area immediately. Your thoughts?
Chris Sheridan (2:32 PM)
Now that the Dampier-Houston deal is dead, I could see the Heat revisiting that. Damp/Magloire would give them more off the bench to match up with Bos/Orl than Juwan Howard is ever going to give them.
Who would the Thunder be willing to shop to get a SG like Hamilton? Are they really giving up on Green/Harden?
Chris Sheridan (2:36 PM)
They'd start with the expiring contracts of Collison and MoP, which adds up to $13.4 million. Then it becomes a matter of what else it would take to get a player like Rip. Pistons would want Green/Ibaka, and Thunder would probably prefer to add on Sefolosha and a No. 1 pick.
Steven G (Phx)
Over Under Two Months For AI. What benches look good so far this year?
Chris Sheridan (2:40 PM)
I've been spending a lot of time with the Knicks, whose bench has been very good with Chandler and Douglas and Turiaf all making solid contributions. They are getting a lot more balance than I thought they would. If they had shown up for the 4th quarters of yesterday's game vs. Philly and their home opener vs. Portland, they could have been 5-1 by now (or 5-2 if the asbestos scare hadn't postponed their game against the Magic.).
David M (Miami)
Who is the best power forward in the Eastern Conference?
Chris Sheridan (2:42 PM)
I see u r from Miami, David. Are you trying to bait me into bashing Chris Bosh? I will say this: Elton Brand has looked like the best PF so far. Best I've seen him play in 4 yrs.
Ignacio (Puerto Rico)
Dwight Howard looks like a different person this year. I think he's right there with Durant for MVP this year. Thoughts?
Chris Sheridan (2:44 PM)
I have a rule. No MVP discussion in chatland until January at the earliest. Which is why I am refusing to post a bunch of questions from LA asking me if I think Pau Gasol is playing like the MVP.
Chris, I know its very very early to determine but do you see the heat trading Bosh at some point in the next year for a couple good bigs, there paying him the same as wade and bron and getting 14 and 5 out fo him, I dont see his numbers improving enough to justify that money
Chris Sheridan (2:47 PM)
No way, Ryan. LBJ/DWade/Bosh formed a friendship in their years together with Team USA that helped make this whole Miami Thrice (sorry, Stein) thing happen, and they are together for better or worse for four full years. Trading Bosh would infuriate the other two, unless there is a falling out amongst them sometime in the next couple years.
Is Gasol the best Laker now? With Kobe's mileage, the offense is best when run through him.
Chris Sheridan (2:50 PM)
I cannot make that statement. But I can say that Gasol was their best player, by far, in the final 6 minutes of Game 7 of the NBA Finals, when the title was won. It's part of what cost Kobe (6-for-24 that night) a Finals MVP vote last June.
How do you see the return of Andrew Bynum affecting the Lakers chemistry? How will Phil get him back in effectively?
Chris Sheridan (2:52 PM)
Well done with affect/effect Jake. It changes their chemistry, certainly, because it eventually sends Odom back to the bench. Let's see what their record is when Bynum is finally ready, and then let's see whether that impacts Phil Jax's decision on whether to alter the starting five.
Chris Sheridan (2:54 PM)
More Iverson over/unders plz as we head into the final few minutes of this chat.
What is the latest with Carmelo? Can't see the Nuggets holding him much longer. AI spends Christmas at home.
Chris Sheridan (2:57 PM)
From what I am hearing, everything is in a holding pattern until Dec. 15 when players who signed over the summer can be dealt. I still see the Knicks as the favorites, because I think Melo wants to be here and can effectively veto any fair-value trade by refusing to sign the extnsion that is sitting on the table.
Craig (Oklahoma City)
Was James Harden a BIG MISS? Steph Curry looks alot better as a 2 guard!!! Any thoughts? AI = Home before Thanksgiving!!!
Chris Sheridan (3:01 PM)
For where he was picked, Harden should be producing more by now. There weren't a lot of pure 2 guards in that draft, but Curry (No. 7) and Toney Douglas (No. 29) have certainly panned out better. Let's see where the Thunder stand with Harden by mid-January or so before we make any blanket statements on him. But there is definitely a job and a role there for him to seize.
Ben (Gainesville, Florida)
Over/Under=AI never plays a game. How many wins for the Celtics barring any injuries? Also, their bench HAS to be on your list of best in the league, no?
Chris Sheridan (3:03 PM)
61 wins, but there is no such phrase a "barring any injuries" when you have the two O'Neals on your team. Bench is scary better than it was a year ago. Semih The Turk and Delonte will bring even more as the season progresses.
Chris Sheridan (3:04 PM)
That's a wrap for this week. Thanks for all the good questions, folks.
