Chat with David Ubben
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, ESPN.com Big 12 blogger David Ubben will stop by to chat some college football.
Ubben joined ESPN.com in March 2010 after covering Big 12 football for two seasons at the Columbia Missourian and The Oklahoman. Ubben, a native of Springdale, Ark., lives in Dallas.
Send your questions now and join Ubben Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET!
David Ubben (2:02 PM)
Time to get this week's chat started. What's on your mind?
Big 12 coaches (stillwater/waco)
How can Briles and Gundy not make the coach of the year short list. Missouri and Oklahoma are great stories but they are not in the top two in the confrence none the less the nation.
David Ubben (2:03 PM)
Don't ask me. I didn't make the list. Mike Gundy and Art Briles were my top two picks for the conference coach of the year last week and they'll be on top of my list tomorrow, too.
Tyler (Tulsa )
DU- Love the blog.. Realistically, what are the chances that OSU beats both, UT and OU? Thanks
David Ubben (2:03 PM)
Pretty good. Texas would be a monumental upset at this point. Oklahoma could win, but if both teams win out, the Sooners will still probably be a clear underdog in that game.
Do you see colorado native Mike Leach taking over the cu job? he would be a good fit heading in the the pac 12.
David Ubben (2:04 PM)
I'd like to see Leach take that gig. He might not fit in a lot of ways, but in plenty of others, he's perfect. And he won't see much defense in the Pac-12. The one big disadvantage could be recruiting. He'd basically be starting from scratch in California.
Dumbo (College Station)
Dave, when was the last time you saw a game with about 20 plays inside the 10 result in 7 points, 3 goal line stands, 2 safeties, 1 kickoff return for 6, and a partridge in a pear tree?
David Ubben (2:05 PM)
Good question. It's been awhile. Seems like a problem for the play-calling birds.
Do you think the Hawkins firing came 2 years too late?
David Ubben (2:06 PM)
Maybe a year late. Two years would have probably been a little too early.
Bawn (Omaha, NE)
How do you feel about AJ Klein's missed penalty when he was trying to unscrew Rex Burkhead's helmet while Rex was still wearing it? Since Klein wasn't penalized, should he be punished somehow by the league, or is in-house punishment sufficient?
David Ubben (2:08 PM)
Yeah, that was pretty ugly. There's not much precedent for that, but I haven't heard much from either coach about it. It's a little ridiculous to lump that in with helmet-to-helmet hits, though.
Jacob (US Navy)
Tim Deruyter...great hire or greatest hire?
David Ubben (2:09 PM)
Great hire. Second to Dana Holgorsen.
Your thoughts on UT's decision to not bring Case McCoy into the picture sooner, say anytime after the 5 interceptions thrown by Gilbert?
David Ubben (2:09 PM)
I thought they should have given him a shot. They were going to in the fourth quarter, but when they told Case to get ready, Gilbert mounted a long drive, so they kept Gilbert in the game.
Thoughts on the newly proclaimed wrecking crew at A&M?
David Ubben (2:11 PM)
One game, a Wrecking Crew does not make. Nice to see the return of the hand sign though. Always liked that one. Gig 'em, though...not so much. Ambiguous verbs signified by ambigious hand signals are a bad combo.
Do you see Nebraska or any other Big12 team improving as the season has gone by?
I'm an oSu fan that was there for the game in Austin back in 2004 when we were up 35-7 on texas at half time...I think we all know the rest of the story. Do you see any chance that Garrett Gilbert will have a similar "coming out party" like Vince did? For some reason, I'm more nervous about this game than the Baylor game.
David Ubben (2:15 PM)
Technical difficulties, sorry.
David Ubben (2:16 PM)
It's pretty clear that Iowa State is getting better. I suppose Kansas, too. Oklahoma State's offense is as good as it's ever been, too.
David Ubben (2:17 PM)
I get the nervousness from Oklahoma State fans heading down to Austin, but there's not a lot of real reason to believe Texas is going to suddenly come alive. They were built well to stop Nebraska's offense, but Oklahoma State has a lot more weapons and can move the ball in a lot more ways than the Huskers can.
I think the call by Paul Rhodes was great! How about you?
David Ubben (2:18 PM)
Liked it a lot. Probably would have liked it more if he had just ran a play. Austen Arnaud is built for the run/pass option rollout play on the goal line. Put the game in your senior's hands, not your punter.
Is Texas bowl bound? If not, any firings?
David Ubben (2:19 PM)
No. And No.
DU, do you think it's ironic that almost a year ago the Longhorns were pounding their chests about being the "flagship" of the big12 and acting like they were the only school that could hold the big12 together, only to be currently last in the south?
David Ubben (2:21 PM)
There's certainly a little bit of that. There's not a more poorly timed year to be down than this one for the Longhorns, considering what happened over the summer.
I know before you've said that voters should not consider Blackmon's arrest when voting for awards, but do you think it will hurt his chances anyways? If so, how much?
David Ubben (2:21 PM)
I don't think it will. All it did was take away a chance for him to catch 10 more balls and add a couple touchdowns.
Mr. Gill (Kansas)
Do I stand a chance this weekend?
David Ubben (2:22 PM)
I'll go with no, but you never know.
Kevin K. (Omaha)
Are you going to be jealous of Adam next year when he gets to cover a way better conference then you? Also - what will you do when the BIG 12 folds in 2015 and Texas becomes independent?
David Ubben (2:23 PM)
Yes. Retire to my Greek villa.
Britt (Austin Texas )
How impressed were you with Taylor Potts on Saturday. Do you go back to starting him in Norman.
David Ubben (2:24 PM)
Very impressed. I'm sure he felt like he had a lot to prove, and he did it on Saturday when his team really needed it. I don't see any way he doesn't start on Saturday in Norman. I've never really understood the anti-Taylor Potts sentiment in Lubbock. He has his weaknesses, but so does Steven Sheffield. They're both pretty good, and also very different quarterbacks. Both are capable of getting the job done.
Jacob (US Navy)
The Ags just beat #8 in the country, first time to beat a ranked team since last year at Tech and we don't make the list of getting better?
David Ubben (2:26 PM)
Ha, yeah, they should have been on there. But they also made a big personnel change. The defense has been consistent all year for the most part, but Tannehill is making big plays and keeping possession, which Jerrod Johnson had trouble with this year.
Britt (Austin Texas )
Better college reciever Crabtree or Blackmon?
David Ubben (2:27 PM)
Pretty clearly looks like Blackmon right now. He's on track for two Biletnikoff awards just like Crabtree got if he keeps this up.
Britt (Austin Texas )
How did Cam Newton sneak out of Blinn and not sign with a Texas School?
David Ubben (2:29 PM)
Seems like he wanted to be back in the SEC after leaving Florida. Oklahoma recruited him and was a finalist, but Auburn and Mississippi State were the two big teams that had the best chance to get him.
Larry (Las Vegas)
Colorado fans seem certain that Bill McCartney is ready to come back as Colorado coach. Is he the best hire both for the Buffaloes and the Pac 10/whatever?
David Ubben (2:31 PM)
I don't know about that. Most of the talk was just for this year. If McCartney comes back, it's little more than a short-term solution.
Seriously David......is OU recruiting finesse lineman that can't be physical in their blocks, trying to run so many different sets that they can't get any of them right, or what? Personally, i think we need a scheme change/coordinator change.
David Ubben (2:33 PM)
No, I'm not sure what it is. They've run the ball pretty well in stretches this season. And they don't have "finesse" linemen. Trent Williams was a first-round pick and Stephen Good came to Oklahoma as one of the strongest linemen in the country, a guy everybody wanted.
Who's your current pick to emerge from the south the face my Huskers? (Of course, baring a collapse of the century...)
David Ubben (2:35 PM)
Why is there a perception that the Big XII is down this year? Is it because Texas is down or because there are no undefeated teams? Last I checked, over half the Big XII teams were already bowl eligible and the conference is as well represented in the polls as any.
David Ubben (2:36 PM)
Lack of teams in the national title hunt. The league is pretty deep, but Texas is obviously down. Oklahoma isn't what they've been at times in the recent past. Nebraska is good, but on the outside of the national championship discussion. Oklahoma State still not getting a lot of attention nationally, despite being in the top 10.
In a rematch of OSU vs NU, who has the edge the second time around?
David Ubben (2:38 PM)
Generally, you've got to like the team coming off the loss when the two teams are as close as Nebraska and Oklahoma State are, but I still think Nebraska is the better team because of its defense.
Why is Nebraska out of the national championship discussion, but Stanford, OSU, and LSU is in it? Stanford got destroyed by Oregon, OSU got destroyed by Wisconsin, and LSU needs help just to make the SEC championship game...
David Ubben (2:40 PM)
Here's the deal: None of those teams are legitimately in the conversation past anything but hypotheticals. There's still four undefeated teams on the board.
Cody (In class)
What will happen to Jerod Johnson after this season?
David Ubben (2:41 PM)
Good question. My guess is he'll get invited to a camp somewhere. Some NFL team will give him a shot. He was already a late-round pick when the season began, and there's no way he gets drafted now.
Are you flipping kidding me David? "It's a little ridiculous to lump that in with helmet-to-helmet hits, though."Yea its different. ITS WAY WORSE! A helmet to helmet hit is instant event. Grabbing and twisting someone's face mask FOR 7 SECONDS shows premeditation.Come on Ubben. Seriously?
David Ubben (2:43 PM)
I'm not going to defend the action. There's no place for that in the game. He was trying to keep him from the end zone, but that's not the way to do it. As for premeditation, I don't know about that. If he's at the two-yard line, I doubt he gets the facemask pulled. But again, a pretty classless move.
Hypothetical: Iowa State ends 6-6. Texas and Texas Tech both finish 7-5. Only two can make a bowl game. Who is the odd man out? And, do you think ISU has a chance at beating Mizzou at home to finish 7-5 and render the situation moot anyway?
David Ubben (2:44 PM)
Not true. Nobody has to get left out. The MWC, Big Ten and Pac-10 won't be able to fill their bowl responsibilities. There'll be plenty of space for Big 12 teams. Little Caesar's Bowl, New Mexico Bowl are both options.
Tyler (Los Angeles)
What are the chances of Turner Gill (and the Jayhawk faithful) being put out his misery after this season? Also, who's the leader in the clubhouse for the new KU AD? Thanks and keep up the good work.
David Ubben (2:47 PM)
No way, no way, no way. It's a possibility with the uncertainty at the top, but any coach--barring scandal--deserves at least three years, no matter what. A lot of names being tossed around for the KU search, but it doesn't seem like there's been a consensus as to the leader.
Mike (San Diego)
The Little Caesar's bowl sounds like a menu item, not a football game.
David Ubben (2:48 PM)
Can't it be both?
Blackmon over Crab...? Blackmon is on pace for 108 rec, 1800 yrds, and 22td's. Crab's rs Fresh stats were: 134 rec, almost 2000 yrds, and 22 td's.Explain your logic.
David Ubben (2:49 PM)
How often was Texas Tech running the ball that year? Without time to look up the numbers, my guess is significantly less than Oklahoma State.
You're right it wasn't premeditated, but it was intention to injure, and seriously at that. That is borderline assault, as it was still going on after the play. Anyways, why do you think a flagrant act like that isn't given much attention compared to helmet to helmet hits? At least most helmet to helmet are most likely not with intent to injure.
David Ubben (2:51 PM)
Honestly, there'd be a lot more national outrage if Burkhead had been seriously hurt, but he wasn't. I'm not saying that's necessarily right, but it's the truth. Helmet to helmet hits--especially hard ones--almost always get guys hurt and can produce serious, long-term injuries.
David Ubben (2:52 PM)
I wouldn't have a problem with Klein being suspended for it, but without a precedent, it's hard to make a definitive call either way. Clearly, he was way, way in the wrong. And like I said, there's no place for that.
Some of my UT friends are saying Mack Brown is in the hot seat and I told them they were crazy. They are, right?
David Ubben (2:54 PM)
Yes. Dumb. Fans have pretty short memories. With that long, long string of losing seasons, Mack Brown's been begging to be fired, right?
Uhm Eric Martin's suspension was without precedent.
David Ubben (2:55 PM)
Which is why there was so much controversy over it. I'm not the one who suspended him.
Do you think if the refs see, via instant replay,a player trying to harm another player they should be able to call a penalty after the fact?
David Ubben (2:56 PM)
I'm in favor of that.
Tech- 246 att, 771 yards in '07Ok State- 337 att, 1761 yards '10
David Ubben (2:56 PM)
Thanks. That's almost 100 snaps that could have gone Crabtree's way. More targets = More catches. Blackmon is getting it done.
Nobody is gonna let you live this klein thing down huh?
No Ubben, your just the guy defending the player's action
David Ubben (2:58 PM)
So, my defense of Klein is this, to summarize what I've said so far today. A) No place for that in the game. B) Wouldn't have a problem with him being suspended. C) Way over the line. D) Classless. I don't think saying it wouldn't happen if it wasn't at the goal line or that it wasn't premeditated warrants being called a "defense" of Klein.
He only stabbed him to stop him from scoring. NU Fans are such winers
David Ubben (3:00 PM)
Yeah, now if people are getting stabbed on the field, certainly, suspensions should start being handed out.
David Ubben (3:01 PM)
Alright, that's all for today. Pretty good chat. See you all again next week.
