Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am now 6-5 after getting a win with Notre Dame over Utah last weekend. Now I try to win eight games and the pressure is on. Last year I went 9-5. One observation from last week's games. The action of Wisconsin in trying to roll up the score against Indiana was an absolute disgrace. Every Badger fans should hang their head. Fire away.
What NC match up would you most like to see? And which NC match up would you least like to see?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
I would like to see Auburn and Oregon. It is hard to say the least because any game has the potential to be a great matchup. I am not going to go out and knock any team that can compete for the national championship.
Oregon has beaten opponents this season by scores of 72-0 and 69-0. They often go for 2 points and they run a no huddle offense that leaves defenders exhausted. Where's the outrage? Wisconsin outscores an opponent by 63 points and they are considered bullies. I have not seen or heard anything from a person who actually saw the game who felt Wisconsin did anything wrong. Only those who saw the score and a few highlights have criticized the Badgers. The real story of the game, as someone who was there, was the Hossiers quit competing. Your thoughts?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
Wisconsin is wong, period, So is any team that rolls it up for any reason. What makes me upset about Wisconsin is the opponent was Indiana. If it was Ohio State or Michigan, I would not have said a word.
Madison Slim (Madison, WI)
There goes that east coast bias against Wisconsin. Last week?s game against Purdue, ESPN never showed highlights of the highly ranked Badgers, 7th in the BCS. This week Mike and Mike reported and now Pat Forde becomes judge and jury against Coach Beliama that for supposedly running up the score, 83-20 against Indiana. The truth was, in the fourth quarter, the third string quarterback threw a deep pass to a walk-on receiver, a slow white kid from northern Wisconsin. The quarterback had so much time that he could have ate a burger and drank a brewski before he threw a 40 yard pass that should have been intercepted, but the defender fell down and the receiver ran the last 36 yards untouched. The Badgers last touchdown was a 30 yard run by walk-on quarterback Nate Tice (Bears Coach Mike Tice?s son), who is the 5th string QB. Tice, who runs a 5.6 forty yard dash and is slower than all our offensive linemen. The game was almost over by the time he got into the end zone. Six guys had a shot to tackle him and didn?t. The truth is Indiana Coach Lynch?s team quit on him with 5 minutes to go in the first half and Wisconsin scored three TD?s in that time. Wisconsin could have scored a 100 in that game. Again today, Coach Bill Lynch said it was Indiana?s fault they lost the game because of six turnovers and poor tackling. Wisconsin only started one drive on their side of the 50 yard line because of the turnovers and long special teams returns. I always thought Forde is an idiot but to say reason Brewster got fired at Minnesota was because Wisconsin ran a two point play proves my case. Indiana isn?t going to fire Bill Lynch either and only an idiot would say that.
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Look, I rest my case.
Do you think california faked injuries vs. Oregon to slow the pace of the offense? Isn't that cheating?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Did they get penalized? No. It is a good strategy and I agree it is unsportsmanlike conduct, but I don't want to go as far and say it is cheating. Plus you don't know if a guy really cramped up or not.
Beano, I just read Maisel's chat and someone asked about "blackouts" at various schools. I hate blackouts and don't know why people wouldn't just wear their school colors. Maybe it's because I'm a Husker fan and Nebraska had the Sea of Red long before other schools started doing it. We did it first and do it best! What say you?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I agree...you should wear the school colors. This stuff with black uniforms is ridiculous.
Justin (New Jersey)
As a passionate and lifelong fan of Army I am ecstatic to see them Bowl Eligible for the first time in 14 years. But seeing as they don't have any primary tie-ins with any bowls just secondary agreements with the Armed Forces and Military Bowls. What are the realistic chances that I'll get to see the Black Knights in their first Bowl since 1996?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I think someone will invite Army and it will be on TV, so you will see the Cadets in postseason play. Right now Army's two concerns are facing Notre Dame and the traffic around Giants Stadium.
Playoff system needed? if we had one for 16 teams the boise's and tcu's would get a chance. 1 thru 8 gets home and then use main bowls as quarters then find spotst for semis and finals. Butler hoops team last year and fresno state baseball would have never got a shot with out a playoff. Some people have no business voting in the polls and computers lets get real
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
All of these plans have been discussed before. The system is the easy part. It is just not going to happen at this time. People want rankings and it adds interest. You have computers and people vote. Maybe we should just let Las Vegas do it.
Dave (Euclid OH)
OSU-Iowa, how do you see it playing out?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
It is one of the better games of the day. I feel Ohio State is the better team but the game is at Iowa. The game is at Iowa City and the Hawkeyes are a slight underdog so this would not be a big upset. Iowa has to bounce back from a tough loss to Northwestern and that could be a challenge.
Giancarlo Toffoli (St. Jean, Canada)
Mr. Cook, the storming of the field by the masses following the win by the Irish shows how far and deep the team has fallen. Has it gotten to the point that defeating a "ranked" opponent is cause for a "storming of the Bastille"? So sad, so sad, what a sad, sad situation and it is getting more and more absurd. Please share your thoughts. Thank you.
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I think one reason was it was the last home game of the season and I believe they did it for the seniors. If they did it for any other reasons, then I would agree with you.
why are people over looking SC now that they get a second shot at Auburn? They should have won that game in Auburn and what your thoughts on who will play for the NCG?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
We will see it how plays out as the national championship situation will play itself out. South Carolina played some schedule, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn...by the way, Steve Spurrier has to face Clemson still and that is a rivalry game so that has some meaning too...then we can talk about Auburn.
Cory (Geneva, IL)
Can we clear up this Notre Dame "storming" of the field? I was there. On Senior day the senior students always come on the field. Every single year. They didn't storm, they casually walked down the aisles and jumped over the walls. It happens every year, only the last few years the team has lost so noone notices.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
That is what I said, that it happened because of the seniors. Thanks for the information.
Any head coaches possibly leaving for greener pastures or the NFL?
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
Any college coach who goes to the NFL is nuts, unless it is a franchise that has stable and sensible ownership. In other words, forget Dallas and Washington. Ask Steve Spurrier.
Sara (Omaha, NE)
No playoff for college football, it would ruin the game! Lets go back to the day of the biggest games being played on Jan 1st.
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Look, fans should quit complaining. If they don't like it, there is nothing I can do about it. Thanks Sara.
Nick M. (Atlanta, GA)
Who has had a more disappointing year so far - Texas or Georgia? Is Mack Brown feeling some heat to step aside for Muschamp?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Just to reflect, if we did not have the BCS, there would not have been USC-Texas, Ohio State-Miami and last year's game. I would say Texas has been more disappointing than Georgia this year. The Longhorns played for the national title last year and may be out of a bowl this season. Muschamp is coach in waiting...and he is waiting.
Do you think a playoff system would change how the media covers college footbal? More like pro sports coverage about here and now rather than speculation
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
I don't know how...it might but it is a moot point since we will not have a playoff any time soon.
Ted (San Antonio)
Beano, what do you think is the problem with the Gators performance this year. They really have to much talent for the way they have played.
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
It is one of those years. Those things happen. Florida will probably bounce back next year. Imagine if Cam Newton did not leave Florida?
Hasn't the BCS gotten us to a point where running up the score is not only the norm, but is almost mandatory in order to be ranked appropriately? Why else would Boise State beating a team soundly lower their BCS ranking (I'm not talking this week...) because a 30-point win isn't a large enough margin of victory? BCS lazy.
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
No, because that is not taken to account. Whether or not it was, it is wrong. Boise State's situation is different than Wisconsin's situation.
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
I have never given it to Wisconsin before in almost 30 years in this business.
I think the cadets can handle traffic around giants stadium as the game will be at Yankee stadium. Who do you see winning the game in the Bronx (my Birthplace)
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
Oops, I know the game is at Yankee Stadium, did not realize I typed that.
Beano, I'm not sure you can say the BCS did anyone a huge service with last year's game. Who is to say that Boise could not have beat Alabama if they were given the chance instead of Texas? Wouldn't a plus one have been nice instead of just the consolation prize that Boise got by getting a top 5 preseason ranking. And it looks like that preseason ranking and another undefeated regular season may not even get Boise a crack at the championship game.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Number one played number two, and that was the purpose of the BCS. People need to stop complaining about the current system because that is what we have. If Auburn or TCU loses, Boise State will probably be in there.
Running up the score is taken into account by voters. Look at TCUs drop in the polls this week.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
That is your opinion.
Dan (Coushatta, La)
You are correct Beano! Sid Luckman did attend high school in Brooklyn at Erasmus Hall High School. Keep up the great podcasts with Ivan!
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Beano! Are there any teams besides Boise State that you think could win the NFC North this year?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
Tress is coming out of his vest! I read Tressel found his inner Woody Hayes during halftime of the Penn State game. I like Tressel's even keel, but feel his players need a little Nick Saban every now and then. Your thoughts on this new Tressel?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Ohio State was definitely different in the second half of that game so it must have worked. It was 14-3 and Ohio Satte scored the last 35 points so you may be right.
Beano, Pat Hill is on record as saying that he feels Boise's personnel this year are better than the personnel that USC had in 2005 when Fresno played and almost beat them. I realize he may be saying this to boost his fellow WAC (and soon to be MWC) member, but I think there is something to that. At the skill positions, Boise matches up as well as anybody in the country. Agree?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Boise has a lot of talent but it is hard to say and compare the two. I don't know that Boise has anyone like Reggie Bush.
mathieu (san francisco)
Beano! Colorado Buff Kool-Aid is now being poured, is it unreasonable to believe that the Buffs can win out? This weekend will be a very emotional game against KSU, with Cabral preaching One Heartbeat.I love that Coach Cabral has banned red from the training facility, just as it was in the Mac days. I'm betting Colorado will show up big time in Lincoln, NU better be ready! Go CU!
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Yes because the Buffs still play Nebraska and Kansas State. That is going to be tough.
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I am going to celebrate tonight after hearing Bud Black and Ron Gardenhire were named NL and AL manager of the year. I can't wait until pitchers and catchers report.
Do you still think the Cam Newton allegations are hogwash?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Until proven otherwise, hogwash is a bad word to use. They could be true, but I want to see proof before rushing to judgment. I will say there is a lot of smoke.
Scooter, minny [via mobile]
Who do u think would be a good coach 4 the gophers, do u think they will ever win?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
It will be difficult for Minnesota to win on a consistent basis. There will be winning years, but to do it almost every year is tough in the Big Ten. The same can be said for schools like Purdue and Northwestern. Al Golden would be one good name but I don't know if he is interested.
The Deke (Dickeyville, WI)
What would you have gotten on WI for in the last 30 years? They were terrible for a third of that time, and Barry never did anything to rattle anybody's cages. And I'm still waiting to hear Lynch or an Indiana player complain, so far it's just been sports writers and talking head types who didn't see the game.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
That is what you think. That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. I have nothing against Wisconsin. I actually like the program. I have been told Wisconsin is the best place to go to summer school.
Beano, how good are Tennessee's chances of winning out?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
The Vols have a shot. This is easier than some of the other games but Kentucky will not be easy.
I have heard comments that Oregon would rather play anyone in the NC game but Boise. Have you heard anything like that?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
No, I have not. I doubt they said that. I cannot believe coaches would say that. I will say it is amazing what Boise State has done.
Can Georgia do better than Mark Richt?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
Knute Rockne is not alive.
Do you think Nick Fairly should have been suspended for his late hits against Georgia?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
That would be up to the SEC commissioner, Mike Slive. The replays were not necessarily conclusive. I will say there are more late hits now than there used to be.
I Don't think anyone in Boise could have afforded Reggie's compensation package. That being said, how does none of the alligations against Cam Newton seem to tarnish his image?
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Nice onservation on Bush. As of now, Newton still has my vote for the Heisman Trophy, but we have a few more weeks of games to decide that. Allegations probably have tarnished his image but nothing has been proven. It may be unfair that people have made their judgments. Who knows....
It is absolutely intolerable when sports journalists/commentators refuse to answer a question and reply with "Look, I rest my case." The fact is, the BCS system is to blame here. Style points matter and blowing out another team CAN, maybe not in the case, but CAN lead to a differential in ranking. Don't for a second get mad at Wisconsin - for I'd be mad at any team that took a knee under the current BCS system.
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
That is your opinion. By the way, taking a knee late in a game is classy at times.
Do you see any conferences(Big East) losing thier AQ spot in 2012?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Yes, they could. Do I think it will happen...no, I don't. That said, it could...The Big East has problems and I don't think the athletic directors know how serious it is.
Mike (Los Angeles)
Does Notre Dame's victory over Utah put to rest the idea that ND is irrelevant, or does it put to rest the idea that the mid-majors belong, or was it just another college football game?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Just another college football game.
Do you believe integrity should play a role in Heisman voting?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Jason (Corporate America)
Beano- who's your #1 vote going to? Oregon has beaten a whopping FBS 2 teams with winning records while Auburn has beaten 4 ranked teams and 6 with winning records...and has averaged only 1 TD less then Oregon. How do the voters put Oregon first? The Duck's push-ups?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I don't have a vote but if I did I would go with Auburn number one right now.
Do you think that TCU will get jumped by Boise when it is all said and done and do you think they should?
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
They might and it is hard to say whether they should or not. If Boise State and TCU don't qualify for the national championship game, they should not face each other. People want to see TCU and Boise State playing the conference champions instead of head-to-head again and it would be a disgrace if that did not happen.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
I am sitting at 6-5 right now and I am shooting for bowl eligibility with three weeks to go. Colorado is a slight underdog at home against Kansas State. I am going with Colorado 34, Kansas State 21. Thanks for your questions...see you next week.
