David Ubben (4:05 PM)
Hey, everybody. Let's get started. What's on your mind?
mtv watcher (Abilene)
Did you see the MTV special focusing on OSU commit H. Simms. First time seeing that program but it was impressive and he is a mature kid.
David Ubben (4:06 PM)
I did. I loved it. I'd seen a few parts of some episodes before, but the Herschel Sims episode had me glued for 60 minutes. I'm excited to see him put on some pads in the Big 12. I'm sure Mike Gundy and OSU are, too.
Chad (Kirksville, MO)
C'mon David, I know you're probably tired of hearing it, but why (besides the lame "they're a different team now" argument) can you continue to put OU and NOW A&M above Missouri? I know the Tech loss was bad, but only 2 losses is just that. Is head-to-head worthless? Look, if it's really too close to call with all of the league's top teams beating each other up (actually OU hasn't beat any of the top 5 teams...yet), why not just list a tie for 2nd and/or 3rd. Now might be the appropriate situation.
David Ubben (4:09 PM)
Maybe it's just me, but I put a lot of stock into consistency. There was no reason for Missouri to lose that game. Nebraska's loss to Texas is probably worse on paper now, but Texas at least has a defense with the athletes to stop the Huskers. I know Missouri wants head-to-head to count, and it factors in, but let me know when the Tigers knock off two top 10 teams in three weeks.
Todd (Des Moines, Ia)
So after this weekends Pelini meltdown, some justified some not, Is there a reason why he gets raked over the coals fro doing basically the same thing guys like Frank Martin or Bob Huggins do every night? I know thats basketball but what is the difference?
David Ubben (4:11 PM)
I thought Pelini went a little far, but I don't know if he's getting raked over the coals, necessarily. His own chancellor talking to the media didn't help. Running after officials after the game and poking Martinez's chest didn't either. I don't think it's a huge deal, but plenty of people around the country do. That matters for Nebraska. I think they're handling it well, though. Bo was really impressive on Monday, I thought. Straight-forward, but also appropriately apologetic without coming off as insincere.
Will (College Station)
Dave, in games you have been to personally this season, which team has had the best/loudest crowd?
David Ubben (4:12 PM)
Saturday night, definitely. Nebrska's fans in the first quarter against Missouri and Missouri's fans against Oklahoma are pretty close to each other for No. 2.
David Ubben (4:13 PM)
Oklahoma's fans against Florida State were pretty good, too, actually.
So how many angry emails did you get from Husker Nation after Saturday night?
David Ubben (4:14 PM)
Ha. We were sitting comfortably over 400 by Monday morning.
Alex Henery (Lincoln)
Seriously? I am not on the list for the best kicker in the country? REALLY???
David Ubben (4:15 PM)
Yeah, I was pretty surprised about that. The lack of attempts probably has something to do with that, but Dan Bailey has struggled the past couple weeks, and I thought you had the edge. Guess I was wrong.
Ryan (Omaha, NE)
I know you had an article on it a while back that I found interesting. Conspiracy theories aside, what is your take on the fact NU's opponents get penalized the least out of everyone? Citing the article in Lunch Links where A&M averaged almost 9 penalties a game and had 2 on Saturday.
David Ubben (4:18 PM)
That obviously looks suspicious. Nebraska's lack of holding penalties from opponents isn't great, but while Bo Pelini's fiery attitude is probably great for motivating his players, my guess is it's not helping him drawing flags from officials.
Any updates on the CU coaching search?
David Ubben (4:20 PM)
Seems like it's moving a little slow, but that's always the case when the season is still going on. Coaches aren't going to fly out to do interviews now. It'll heat up after championship weekend.
Tim DeRuyter will be the ______ at ________ next season.
David Ubben (4:21 PM)
Defensive coordinator, Texas A&M
Jack Bauer (24)
During my investigation of the penalites during the A and M game, I still can not find a witness to the Phantom Unsportsmanlike calls against Eric Martin....I think he is being framed.....what do you know?
David Ubben (4:22 PM)
Well, it was on a touchback, and the cameras didn't show it on the broadcast. My guess is he was going after someone on the return team and hit them late when he didn't know his return man had knelt. He's clearly being watched after the suspension earlier this year.
Buck (Laredo, Tx)
who would you rate, at this point in the season, as the Big xii's best: head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator.
David Ubben (4:23 PM)
Mike Gundy, Dana Holgorsen, Tim DeRuyter
Ross (Seattle, WA)
David - If A&M wins at Texas and wins it's bowl game....where are they ranked preseason in 2011?
David Ubben (4:24 PM)
Good question. With Tannehill taking over and proving better than competent, I'd say safely in the top 20, probably higher. It'll depend on who they play. In the Cotton Bowl, it might be LSU.
Kris (Des Moines, IA)
Did Stoops break out the "I told you so" blast concerning his road incompetence to the media and fans way to soon after smacking Baylor? Me thinks he still has major issues he is still turning his back to..
David Ubben (4:27 PM)
Ha, he didn't, but I really would have liked to have seen it. Gotta love personality from coaches. He knows what's ahead of his team, though. Knows it's good for his team but not all that impressive to win at Baylor. If they play like that against OSU, they'll have a great shot to win.
has any other player for the big 12 been suspended this year? And is the player from A &M looking at suspension for his actions against Ben Cotton?
David Ubben (4:28 PM)
No one's been suspended. The Eric Martin suspension was announced on a Wednesday, so I imagine if Tony Jerod-Eddie is going to be suspended, we'll find out then. I wouldn't have a problem if the league dropped the hammer.
With the success of Dana Holgerson, I would've thought that teams would have been ringing Mike Leach's phone off the hook. Any rumors or thoughts of where he might be coaching next year?
David Ubben (4:30 PM)
I think he'll stay one more year in Stillwater. It'd be good to spend another year running an offense for a major conference team. No reason to think the Cowboys offense won't be almost as good next year. I'd expect Blackmon and Weeden to be back, and though they lose Hunter, Smith and Randle look really, really good.
If cabral beats NU and wins a bowl what are the chances he will get the job permenantly?
David Ubben (4:31 PM)
Colorado would be nuts if they didn't give him the job after that.
mathieu (san francisco)
Given the whole Nebraska-being-persecuted-by-the-officials complex running rampant in Lincloln, it should be noted that the Buffs have been playing relatively penalty free under Cabral, insted of committing the back-breaking mental errors that were a hallmark of the Hawkins era. I look for the Buffs to show up large in Lincoln, this one should be a slobberknocker. Go Buffs!
David Ubben (4:33 PM)
I hadn't seen that, but I haven't really been tracking Colorado's penalties. I'll take a look later today.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Which Big 12 Team do you think will play in the New ERA Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday December 30,2010 at Yankee Stadium?
David Ubben (4:34 PM)
Big Red Fan (Lincoln, NE)
What are the odds that a 5-7 Texas team gets a bowl invite/accepts it? It's my understanding that there could be as many as six 5-7 teams.
David Ubben (4:35 PM)
Honestly, if I had to bet on it right now, I bet the Longhorns get a call. Someone asked Mack Brown that question this week, whether or not they'd take a bid. His answer: "We plan on being 6-6." Don't be surprised if Texas goes bowling at 5-7.
Justin Boomer Sooner Myers (Dallas, TX)
If OSU wins the Bedlam Bell what are the odds the hungry for a Bedlam win Pokes rush the field?
David Ubben (4:37 PM)
They shouldn't. Even if it's against a rival, you should never storm the field in a game you're supposed to win. The only exception is if they win it in some crazy, dramatic way like a Hail Mary or a Music City Miracle-style return play.
David Ubben (4:37 PM)
And eight years is hardly a long enough drought to warrant storming the field.
I'm fine with Texas bowling at 5-7, as long as it means they can finish 5-8.
David Ubben (4:37 PM)
David are you gonna be in Stillwater again for the bedlam game?
David Ubben (4:39 PM)
Gotta come back tomorrow to find out.
The student section is already talking about rushing the field. OSU's first big 12 title game appearance in the final year of the big 12 is a pretty big deal. I think it's very ok to storm the field.
David Ubben (4:40 PM)
That's an interesting counterpoint. Winning the Big 12 South is a big deal. I had forgotten about the big picture of the game there. It's close, but reconsidering that, I wouldn't have a huge problem with them storming the field.
JACKIE OSU COWBOY (MUSKOGEE, OK)
HOW IS BLACKMON? THERE ARE STORYS HE IS ON CRUTCHES AND THAT HE IS WEARING A BOOT? IS HE HURT OR ARE THEY FAKING IT ?
David Ubben (4:42 PM)
Easy, there. I'm sure it's a precautionary measure. Players wear boots all the time. He tweaked his ankle pretty good against Kansas, but he still played through it--and played pretty well. That should tell you plenty. I'd be shocked if he wasn't on the field.
David Ubben (4:44 PM)
A couple more questions.
Logan (Lincoln, NE)
Ubben, I'm curious what you think about Nebraska's defense after the past two games. It's starting to look like they are returning to last year's form. Granted, Kansas has an awful offense, but still. Whaddayathink?
David Ubben (4:44 PM)
Yeah, they're playing their best football here late in the season. Texas A&M's receivers could hardly breathe, and the Huskers have the best combo of corners of anybody in the country in Prince Amukamara and Alfonzo Dennard.
Kirt (Kyle, Texas)
Odds that Jeff Fuller comes back to A&M?
David Ubben (4:46 PM)
Probably not great, but an NFL lockout could change that.
David Ubben (4:46 PM)
Thanks for the questions, everybody. See you again next week to talk some Big 12 title game. Last one maybe ever.
