Ivan Maisel (2:27 PM)
I'm just impressed that people are still at the office tuning in, because I know I'm not.
Ivan Maisel (2:27 PM)
Brandon (Alexandria, Alabama)
What is the x-factor in the Bama-Auburn game?
Ivan Maisel (2:29 PM)
That's a good question. I've been so focused, like everybody else, on how Alabama can slow down Cam Newton. All I can think of, it is a long proven strategy to take away the best player and make the rest of the team beat you. I'm very curious to see what Nick Saban decides to try to take away Cam Newton.
Do you think what the Ohio State president said about TCU and Boise State is merited or off base?
Ivan Maisel (2:30 PM)
I'd take his comment a lot more seriously if he didn't have a dog in the BCS hunt. I do applaud him for saying out loud what everyone in all six of those conferences says amongst themselves.
Who you got? South Carolina vs. Clemson? I think the Gamecocks with Lattimore and Jeffery prove too much to handle and win 31-14.
Ivan Maisel (2:32 PM)
I agree. I think you have to assume it's going to be a close game if Clemson's going to be in it. Clemson has had a huge problem with its kicking game this year, which is what you need if you're going to win close games. But I really like how the Gamecocks have found their "A" game the last couple of weeks. I think they'll continue to take a lot of momentum into Atlanta next week.
Did you have fun in the cold watching Boise State on Friday night? What did you think of Kellen Moore?
Ivan Maisel (2:33 PM)
I had a great time in Boise. The press box was warm and dry, thank you for asking. I don't think you can say enough good things about Kellen Moore and his unflappability. He knows what he is supposed to do and he does it.
Jim (Trumbull, CT)
Hey Ivan,Simple question, does Georgia get to a bowl game this weekend? Thanks.
Ivan Maisel (2:34 PM)
Yes. Yeah, I think Georgia beats Georgia Tech. Georgia has been the team we all thought they would be in the second half of the season, whereas Georgia Tech has been up and down all year. I think Georgia's a pretty good team and they will win.
Ryan Larrondo's Hair (Boise)
How excited are you about the Georgia-Boise State game next year? Also, how good is Georgia going to be next year?
Ivan Maisel (2:36 PM)
I think Georgia will be pretty good next year. I think they will obviously have a huge home field advantage. It will be interesting to see how much Boise has coming back and how quickly they pull themselves together. The one thing that comes to mind is that Boise has had so many blowouts that guys who will move into jobs next season will get a lot of playing time. But I don't think Boise will be as good next year as they have been the last two.
So, if you can't say enough good things about Kellen Moore, why isn't he mentioned more for the Heisman?
Ivan Maisel (2:37 PM)
That's easy. Cam Newton. He's having the best season of any player this season and probably of the past couple of seasons. It's no reflection on Kellen Moore. It's no reflection on Andrew Luck either.
Terry (Oklahoma City, OK)
Ivan, what is your prediction on the OU/OSU game?
Ivan Maisel (2:39 PM)
The later we get into the week, the more I think Oklahoma State's going to pull it off. But to be honest with you, I really haven't made up my mind yet. Oklahoma State wants this so badly. You wonder if the emotion will get in their way.
With an Auburn loss looming as a possibility, why is the past so relevant to the SEC backers when they claim they are deserving because the last 4 champs came from that conference but that same past is irrelevant to anyone else?
Ivan Maisel (2:41 PM)
Listen, you can't apply logic to any argument anybody makes in this whole BCS free-for-all, because every argument, if you listen to it too closely falls apart like an old T-shirt. The people in the SEC have a point about the strength of schedule with the non-AQs. But they don't care enough that they would actually play those teams and solve the problem. The SEC wants some sort of historical waiver because of what they've done, but we can't consider Boise State's body of work over the last few years. So, just always keep a grain of salt handy.
Has there in your memory ever been a team that has been under the microscope week in week out like Boise State has been this year?
Ivan Maisel (2:42 PM)
Well, I think Auburn would tell you they've been under a more powerful microscope than anyone south of President Obama this season. If you're going to play for the national championship, you're going to undergo a lot of scrutiny.
Todd (Danville, VA)
Who do you think is the Player of the Year in the ACC? I know Tyrod Taylor has not gotten a lot of press nationally be as a member of Hokie Nation he has to be the pick right?
Ivan Maisel (2:43 PM)
Probably so. If I had to say who it was, I would say Tyrod Taylor or Luke Kuechly. I'm not sure who I would pick between the two of them.
I'm worried about A
Ivan Maisel (2:44 PM)
I'd have to say it favors Texas. And they need all the favors they can get.
Thomas (Denton,TX) [via mobile]
Ivan, what do you think about the possibility of North Texas moving to the WAC.
Ivan Maisel (2:45 PM)
I think if the WAC is going to roll the dice on Texas State and UTSA, then why not take North Texas. I think with the league moving into the state, I understand that they would be interested.
Jeff Wills (Boise, Id)
Lots of people see Oregon and Auburn with good chances of losing this week, if both do, what do you think the odds are that both BSU and TSU play for the National Championship?
Ivan Maisel (2:46 PM)
Wow! I would love to see it. I think it would say a lot about the sport and a lot good about the sport if that game were to happen. But I don't think they both would be included.
Fred (Walla Walla)
The Buckeyes opened the season with 4 home games; 3 against Marshall, Miami (Ohio) and E. Michigan. Does their president have any room to criticize any-body's schedule?
Ivan Maisel (2:47 PM)
I think that second game was against Miami (FL) and your point remains well taken.
Mike Leach (CBS Studios)
What am I doing next year?
Ivan Maisel (2:48 PM)
I think Mike Leach next year will continue to host a radio show on Sirius with Jack Arute. They're good. Listening to Leach is always entertaining.
Ivan Maisel (2:48 PM)
I don't think anybody is going to hire him this season.
Stanford the best one loss team in the nation?
Ivan Maisel (2:49 PM)
I think so. I think if we see a Rose Bowl between Stanford and Wisconsin, we'll see the two best one loss teams in the nation. I still think that's the Rose Bowl we'll see.
Robert (Baton Rouge, LA)
How about the match up of Patrick Peterson v. Ryan Mallett?
Ivan Maisel (2:50 PM)
It will be fun to see what LSU's defensive coordinator John Chavis has prepared for Mallett. I think Mallett has finished the season well after the midseason struggles. I love that the game is in Little Rock. I'm sure that Mallett will know where Peterson is with every single snap.
Lou (South Bend, IN)
Do the Wolverines have any chance this weekend? If they lose, will Rodriguez be done? Thank you, and enjoy the great games this week!
Ivan Maisel (2:52 PM)
I don't think Michigan has much of a chance. There is a lot of chatter coming out of Ann Arbor about Rodriguez and his ability to keep the job. My impression had been that he would get the chance to re-make his staff after this season, but all of the gossip of the last 48 hours has left me wondering.
Trey (Long Beach)
Who wins this weekend between ND and USC?
Ivan Maisel (2:53 PM)
Isn't it amazing that there has been absolutely no talk about that game. I think USC is going to win, although I think Notre Dame has a much better chance than I thought they did a month ago. It will be up to USC to see if pride is enough of a motivation to win, because they never seem to get out of their own way last week.
What does Les Miles eat when he plays on a stadium with artificial turf? Does he have to bring his own grass to eat?
Ivan Maisel (2:54 PM)
If only any of us knew the answer to that one or anything else about what Les Miles thinks.
Jerry Eastwood (Haslett, MI )
Your thoughts on Bo Pelini's reactions on the field?
Ivan Maisel (2:55 PM)
I think Bo is a really smart guy and he is a really emotional guy. He has always had a tough time martialing those emotions. But he got his come to Jesus speech after that performance Saturday night. I assume because he's a smart guy that it won't happen again.
Ivan, what do you think of the coaching job Derek Dooley has done at UT? I know 5-6 is nothing to brag about, but to be in a position to be bowl eligible takes a lot of work with so many young palyers.
Ivan Maisel (2:56 PM)
I think he's done a very good job. 5-6 is a lot to brag about when you started out 2-6. He has kept this team focused and kept them improving. I think it's good that Tennessee finally has something to feel good about. It's been a while.
tech rech (Gulf Shores)
OK, so let's not ignore the obvious ... will Cam Newton play in a NC game or will the NCAA step in before January? Will they take away Auburn's wins if his dad really did the auctioning?
Ivan Maisel (2:57 PM)
I assumed that if the NCAA was going to do something, they would have alredy done it. I don't think Cam Newton will be in the championship game unless the rest of the team is there and I'm not convinced that's going to happen.
Predictions? Arizonia vs Oregon? Alabama vs Auburn? Neveda vs BSU?
Ivan Maisel (2:58 PM)
I'm going with the smart guys in Vegas: Oregon, Alabama, Boise.
Ivan Maisel (2:58 PM)
Thanks. Have a great holiday. We all have a lot of good football to look forward to.
