Stephania Bell (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon chat friends. Never a dull moment in the injury world. Let's see what issues are burning for you this afternoon, shall we?
Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
And fyi, we'll start with a known OUT for Sunday. Mike Sims-Walker already ruled out for Week 13.
Percy Harvin: play him or sit him?
Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
David: That's what the Vikings are wondering. Harvin continues to be out with the migraines and we'll see how he is by Sunday. If he's there, play him. But you may not get much clue until then.
Brian (Rocky Mountains, Colorado)
Hey Steffi-ba-ba-ba-bad news! Just kidding - my mom was a physical therapist, I love your insights. Two questions: should I play AP, or should I use a backup like Felix Jones? The second question is, do teams ever under-estimate the time it takes to return from an injury? It seems like players take much longer to recover compared to the official statements, and even when they're back, they're likely to aggravate the original injury. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Brian: Well, tell your mom I like her already...AP apparently moved around pretty well today and the team is optimistic about him playing Sunday. Will he be at his best? Maybe not. But hard to bench him if he's active. Period. And yes, teams underproject all the time. Sometimes I think it's wishful thinking, sometimes trying to keep other teams at bay. And in some cases, players probably do come back sooner than they would in a perfect world. But they are looking at risk-reward and are sometimes willing to take that chance.
Mike B (New Orleans)
Beenie Wells not on the injury report.. I assume he's healthy or the Cardz are just not releasing anything
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Mike B: COngrats for being first poster. You're right, not on report. Means he's healthy enough to participate in full practice without limitations. Doesn't mean another setback isn't ever a possibility, just that he's ok right now.
Terry (La Crosse WI)
What is Addai's prognosis for a return by week 14 (beginning of playoffs)? Been struggling at RB2 for weeks waiting on him. Thanks Stephania.
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Terry: Thank you for writing. It is a struggle. His injury is sloooooow, by virtue of the fact that it's a nerve injury. The team, while not in the habit of giving much info, is not really holding out - it's just a daily assessment. Still no contact, probably more than a week away...just a guess.
Brian (Grand Rapids)
HI Stephania, hearing rumors that P.Thomas might go this weekend. I have stashed him on my bench waiting for a breakout. Will he be able to go Sunday?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Brian: Still Payton saying there's a realistic chance. But with him limited all week I really don't see it yet. I think Week 14 is more likely.
Stephania, do you think Mike Williams (Seattle) will play this week? He's not been practicing, but running on the sidelines rather. I've got Obomanu, thus I'm trying to figure out whether he'll be the starter...thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Russ: Understood - but if the Seahawks were willing to make him a gtd last week, they'll do it again this week. I would suspect if he doesn't kick it up a notch Friday that he'll probably sit, but I think they'll list him as q and he could be a gtd.
Hello and good morning, gonna be gone all day so need to ask now, whats going on with westbrook? I watched the game and didnt see anything wrong. Do you think hes going to play?
Stephania Bell (3:15 PM)
Mike: Thx for posting and coming back later to read...Westbrook rested mostly for precautionary reasons. That was more work than he's done in a year - and the team wanted him to get rest on a short week. While he has the potential to be more susceptible to breakdown, this was more a case of being proactive than anything else.
Confused or Naive (Boston)
Why do I often read people saying dump J.Vax, he's done...Could you explain his situation? Couldn't he come back again next week and be a solid performer for FF Playoffs?
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
He could come back. As of now there's no definitive info that would suggest he's "done." But the expectation almost immediately was that he would miss a couple of weeks. That could of course be extended but I wouldn't write him off yet.
What is the impact of the foot injury for Greg Jennings? Is he still a #1 start for this week?
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
Slydel: Jennings would say he is. His foot is sore, he's admitted that. But he plans to play. The fact he was back in limited practice Thursday was a good sign. Assuming he does the same today, he'll be out there. The risk is a possible worsening of the foot during the game but his confidence and McCarthy's confidence make me think it's not too concerning.
Chris (Washington, DC)
Any word on Jahvid Best? Are the Lions going to leave him active/feature him and watch him struggle, or will they send him to IR and go with Morris for the rest of the year?
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Chris: I think it's the former. Schwartz has said that they will keep a player even if he can contribute only a small amount each week. He also acknowledged that it's not likely to be 100% until after season is over but they will continue to rest him during the week and see what he can give on Sunday. Not a lot for fantasy owners to count on at this point.
Steffie Bad-Newz: I don't own Big Ben, but I was wondering what this injury was. I heard broken foot, then I heard scar tissue from previous break. Can you share some insight? Thx
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Mike: Post-Gazette reported today that Big Ben hurt his foot in the loss to the Patriots a month ago and when they looked at imaging of the foot then, they saw evidence of an old fracture that was a number of years old. So he sprained on top of it then. This past weekend he twisted it again, perhaps more violently, and now has some new trauma superimposed on the site of the old injury. It's possible that the old fracture never really healed 100% (they call it a non-union) and then this injury made it worse.
Joe (Lions Country (The D))
Happy Friday to you Stephania! Thinking of starting Britt this week against a suspect Jags D. What are the chances he plays and if so, is it realistic to expect him to make an impact right away? Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Joe: I think it's too soon for us to see Britt. He as much as admitted this today to the Tennessean. The Titans next play on Thursday night (Week 14) so I imagine that will be the game where he tries to return. Presuming no setbacks between now and then.
What's the word on Mason's illness? Need to start Mason or Amendola (PPR)?
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Suzy: He said he felt better after sweating out the cold at practice. No WAY he misses a big Sunday night matchup.
After sitting a week will Austin Collie make an impact this week or will Blair White overshadow him?
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Jeff: Colts not tipping their hand just yet. Collie has been a limited participant and wants to play, but after a setback with post-concussion symptoms, the team is likely to be conservative. I'm thinking maybe with a Thurs night game coming next that they might hold him a few more days. He'll probably be listed as q this week though and we won't get a solid answer until gametime.
Pete Carroll just announces Mike Williams is a go.
Stephania Bell (3:34 PM)
Mike: Actually what he said is "they're counting on him playing" which sounds almost the same, granted, but leaves them some wiggle room too. Today is his first day of practice. With these foot injuries you want to see how he does afterward, make sure there are no Saturday morning setbacks. Should also point out that guys coming off foot injuries have not had their best games the first week back. Need to temper expectations.
Licensed physicians should making assessments and diagnosing injuries. Speculation from physical therapists is garbage.
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Rick: Apparently you aren't familiar with the practice of physical therapists.
Hello Starphania! How do you like the chances of Nicks coming back week 15? I read that he was targeting week 14, so that gives me hope. Happy Hollidays!
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Mike: I think they're really good! Especially since he may even be back as soon as next week. The biggest issue is the healing of the wound after a fasciotomy and Nicks himself said that is the focus right now. The hope is that he will be healed enough to test the leg running by mid-week next week, and if all goes well, he could play. Those early tests - if he can get on the field - will probably help determine whether he is really ready to go.
Rick, why waste your time to listen/read if you don't trust her prognosis?I have not seen you answer anything with Ryan Matthews yet. What is his progress? And while you are at how about Tolbert?
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
James: Agreed. No time wasting necessary. As far as the Chargers, R Mathews has been practicing all week. Says he finally feels healthy (he did say this a couple weeks back before he aggravated the ankle but he says this time it really does feel better). Tolbert has not practiced b/c of a bruised hand until today - but never really was a threat to sit out. Unless he should have trouble handling the ball (one of the things they wanted to assess in practice today), I suspect he's done well enough to retain plenty of playing time. And Mathews has not been tested for a couple of weeks.
Joe (PT Corner)
Can use my arm thanks to physical therapists. PTs are fantastic. How about an update on Gates. Play Tamme instead.
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Joe: Thanks for the PT shoutout -glad you can use your arm. Gates could use his foot today well enough to return to practice. Earlier in the week he wondered out loud if he returned too soon and was still in a lot of pain, but once he came back it was hard to imagine that he would sit unless there was a really significant lingering setback. That said, don't expect him to be 100%. Always hard to not play Gates if he's active. And I like Tamme - been using him since Clark went out myself. I probably go with Tamme for one week only - but he's one of a very few I pick over Gates.
Eric (Des Moines)
Okay. 3rd try. And I think your advice is better than Matthew's by the way. Roddy White keeps ending up on the injury report each week with his knee. Is it merely just to rest him or is there something actually bothering him???
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Eric: 3rd try is often the charm. White has been listed on the report since he bruised his knee a few weeks back. It hasn't affected his performance on the field but they rest him during the week to help make sure it stays that way.
Brandon Marshall? Don't care about him but I have Davonne Bess and his value goes up without Marshall. thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
B: I still think Bess is valuable, even though it looks like Marshall will play. Coming off a hamstring injury - and a fairly significant one since Marshall says it's worse than the one that ended his season last year - and only doing limited practice, makes the game the first big test. No guarantee how he performs or how it holds up. Several others have experienced setbacks their first time back (like M Floyd). Still think Bess sees plenty of action.
CJ (At work)
Physical therapists DO know what they're talking about......Anyway, is there any way that SSmith (NYG) plays against the horrid Redskins D this week?
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
CJ: Thanks for the love...and the answer I'm afraid is no, not yet. Smith isn't quite ready as he's just getting back into limited aspects of practice. Will be either next week or the week after - so looks like fantasy playoffs could be the time.
This one's for Rick: I am a physician and Steffi bad news knows more than me about injuries! My specialty is not orthopedics or physical medicine/rehab (I do cancer), I trust her advice.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Harrison: Thank You!!! And my philosophy has been - and always will be - that we work as a team. It's my work in the clinic and on the sidelines with other PTs, ATCs and awesome MDs that has shaped my experience. So thanks - and I hope your fantasy football team is doing well.
How do think Malcom Floyd will do? Will he be anywhere close to 100%?
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Brian: I think Floyd will play - but I'm awfully nervous about making any projections after his last outing. Still feel like he's in a delicate post-injury phase since he didn't practice the bulk of this week.
Stephania! Big Jets fan. Any word on how long Jets S Jim Leonhard is out? Suffered a severe shin injury in practice, what should we read from that in terms of long-term prognosis? He's important for the Jets' secondary.
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Chad: Injury so new that there hasn't been much detail yet so don't have a lot to offer - but will look into it this week...
Hey Starphania...what's up with Mike Goodson? Personal issues? Is he going to play this weekend?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Jay: Apparently took some days to be with his new baby. Not sure how much the missed practice will factor into his playing time, but he's not injured.
Can you provide more clarification on Addai's nerve injury? Is this a nerve in his neck or shoulder? And does this injury prevent him from doing much with his upper body (lifting, etc)? I'm really wondering if he'll play again this year. Rock chalk.
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Dan: From the little bit of info we got, Addai suffered a neck injury that resulted in a nerve injury affecting his shoulder. While that leaves a few possibilities, the most obvious is a stinger - which can range from a few days of symptoms to weeks or, at worst, months and beyond. interesting though that haven't really heard the word stinger. Knowing how teams report (or don't report) info, that doesn't necessarily mean much. But either way, nerve tissue is slow to heal so his slow progression not a huge surprise. PRoblem is trying to predict the future. And he's listed as Doubtful so won't play this week.
Jason (Cleveland (Yes, I was at the game))
Is Zach Miller worth a week 15 or 16 play? Or is he too hurt? Need a TE really bad......
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Jason: Unfortunately can't really make that call until we see what he does in the next two weeks. He says he's improving and it looks like he'll continue to play - but he hasn't been able to be productive b/c of the pain. If that improves over the next 2 weeks, he could be great but...
Whats the latest with Hakeem Nicks? Why is it so hard to come back from a large cut on his leg?
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
Web: Just to follow up - touched on this injury earlier. It's not a cut - it's a big gaping wound that goes all the way down to the muscles - it's as if they filleted a portion of his leg...so perhaps that gives a better picture...
Mike (In Flight)
What are your expectations for Mike Hart's ankle injury?
Stephania Bell (4:04 PM)
Mike: Very cool to join us in flight. I think Hart gets some more action this week after practicing all week. He was active last week and did nothing. Still expect Brown to start, but think he touches the ball this time.
Stephania Bell (4:06 PM)
Sorry gang - I'm already overextended here in my chat room...but I want to thank you all for the awesome questions, comments and GREAT PT anecdotes and thoughts. Thanks for coming. I will continue to post updates on Twitter (you can follow at Stephania_ESPN) and my Saturday blog here at ESPN.com will update all injured players' status...Good luck in Week 13!!
