Dan Arritt (3:58 PM)
Hello hockey fans, I'm back. Plenty to chat about in Kingsland....losing streaks, potential trades, Drew Doughty's moustache. Fire away!
What are your thoughts on the reported Sturm deal?
Dan Arritt (4:04 PM)
Good fit. The Kings gave up very little and get a player who can put the puck in the net, something they sorely need. It will interesting to see what kind of shape Sturn arrives in....he hasn't played since last spring.
What's been the biggest reason for the losing streak?
Dan Arritt (4:14 PM)
I'd say it's the loss of Willie Mitchell and Alexei Ponikarovsky....they are both solid defenders and it all begins on the defensive end, even the offense, as Kings GM Dean Lombardi likes to say.
Is their problem injuries or lack of depth. I always held the thought those are two very separate issues. You agree?
Dan Arritt (4:17 PM)
I'd say it's injuries, which has created a lack of depth. You have to remember, the Kings were rolling along before the injury bug hit....they did fine when Doughty was out with the concussion, but then Mitchell, Parse and Poni went down and that really created some holes.
J.J. (San Jose)
Is Drew Doughty having a down year? What about Jack Johnson?
Dan Arritt (4:18 PM)
Doughty certainly isn't looking like the player he did last year, but the big drop off has been Johnson, especially from how he was playing when Doughty missed those five games with a concussion. The minuses keep piling up for JJ and that needs to change is the Kings are to get back to winnning.
What's been the most glaring issue during the losing streak?
Dan Arritt (4:19 PM)
Initially, it was the defense, especially with clearing pucks in front of the net. The Kings seemed to have cleared that up, but now they can't score. The power play has been poor and 5-on-5 scoring is completely MIA....no even-strength goals in the last 11 periods...yikes!
Is Terry Murray a coach that can win a Cup or is he a coach that can only take you so far?
Dan Arritt (4:21 PM)
A little tough to answer that question. He's a good strategist but not sure about his motivational tactics. Everyone loved him when the Kings were 12-3-0, now some question marks starting to appear. Let's see what the record looks like a month from now.
explain the Joe thornton trade 5 years ago??
Dan Arritt (4:22 PM)
Looks like Thornton is still producing for the Sharks, but all the players that Boston received have left the building...
Thomas (Los Angeles)
All of the talk has seemed to focus on the Kings picking up another scorer (Kovalchuk over the summer, Iginla during the season) but don't they need another distributor? It seems like Kopitar is the only real playmaking forward. I like how Lombardi has picked up guys like Smyth and Justin Williams, but I think they've got enough guys who clog the crease. I think they need another skater/passer...
Dan Arritt (4:25 PM)
You're right on Thomas. Unfortunatley, as Dean Lombardi told me the other day, there's just not a lot out there. Teams aren't ready to throw in the towel this early in the season and send a message to the players/fans that they aren't looking to make the playoffs. And he's not willing to subtract from one area on the team to add in another. Lombardi knows what he's doing, he just needs to find the right fit.
Who's going to win tonight?
Dan Arritt (4:27 PM)
Ahhhh, a prediction. I foresee a goal for Williams, a goal for Brown, two assists from Kopi and a goal from the third line in a 3-1 victory over the Panthers.
Dan Arritt (4:28 PM)
That's it folks, thanks for checking in. Come back this evening for some between-period updates and post-game analysis and video from myself and Dave Joseph of ESPN 710 Radio....
