Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome again to another chat. A lot of news in college football so I am sure we will have a lot of good questions. Bowl games start this weekend, the first of 35 games.
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
By the way, good to see the Vikings playing outdoors the way they used to. Brings back memories of Mick Tingelhoff, Bud Grant and Alan Page.
Beano, what's up with the new Big 10 division names? Leaders and Legends divisions? Did they pay some consultant to come up with those names?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
I hope not. I just cannot believe that is the best that they can do. They can't do it geographically, obviously, but I feel they could have done something better than that. Those names are material for Jay Leno.
Beano, how long will coach spurrier coach?what will his record be next year?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
Number one, from what I understand the Gamecocks are supposed to be returning unless they leave early for the draft (not Lattimore obviously as he was a freshman). I believe he will coach next year and very possibly beyond that. As for his record next season, too early to say.
Your thoughts on the Golden hire by Miami? And 2nd question, if JoePa ever retires and PSU comes acallin', would Golden leave after 1 year??
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
Number one, I would be very curious if there is a clause in his contract to leave if Penn State called. Lou Holtz had that type of clause in his contract at Minnesota to leave if Notre Dame's job opener up. Golden was a good choice for Miami and the program has problems, but the cupboard is not bare.
Was California one of the biggest disappointments this season? I don't hear many people talking about them. I know they played Oregon close, but no bowl and a losing record? wow...
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
I would say Texas was the biggest disappointment. California had problems and finishing below .500 may be considered a disappointment, but not the biggest. Texas played for the national championship last year.
Have you read "The Gipper" by Jack Cavanaugh yet? A great historical reference on college football in the 1910's-20's. I never knew Army built their football powerhouse on players who had already played 4 years at other schools.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
No I have not read it. The point about Army is accurate and that is why Navy did not play them for a couple of years.
What do you think will happen with RICH rOD?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I don't know. I keep hearing from some he will not be back, others think he will. If he does come back, he has to beat Ohio State. I don't think a Michigan coach can lose to the Buckeyes four straight years and keep his job. Rodriguez is in a bowl game.
Was it a good move for Gus Malzahn to turn down Vandy?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
Yes. You are not going to win at Vandy and you could be fired within four years. Vanderbilt, Indiana, Duke, you are not going to win at those schools. You can do it in tennis but not in football. The academics at Vandy and Duke are too high.
Paul Lee (Kokomo, IN)
Do you agree with Joe Paterno on bringing back the leather helmets?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I have said for a number of years that a big problem in college football is the helmet. Paul Hornung, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski wore leather helmets. These players today use their helmets as a weapon. I know you were joking but seriously, the helmets are an issue these days.
Should Cam Newton's dad been at the Heisman?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
That is not my decision to make.
Beano, having read all the blogs and articles what is going on with the hiring process at Pitt? No Golden, no Holgerson, now looking at Miami Oh coach? Why wont Pitt pay to get a top line coach?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Number one, Holgerson was really not a strong candidate. Number two, I don't know if Golden was interested. The money is not a factor. There were some pretty good coaches to come from Miami-Ohio...Woody Hayes, Ara Parsgehian, Bo Schembechler.
What do you think iof BYU accepting bids to bowl games for the next two years? Wouldn't it be nice if they play a few games first?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
I did not realize that. I have no opinion. Well, it is ridiculous but if you can get a bowl bid in advance, you should take it. BYU is going independent, so this makes it easier for them. Fans can book their travel early!
Maybe the Panthers can bring Johnny Majors back? Kansas State did that will Bill Snyder...
Beano Cook (3:21 PM)
We know it's not your decision, we are asking for your input, that is why you are chatting right?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
The Heisman Trophy committee decided not to invite him to come there. I don't know all of the details and am not sure if that was the right decision or not. It probably would have been a distraction.
Should have been the Bo and Woody divisions. And I say that as an Irish fan.
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
They have trophies named after Bo, Woody, Stagg and Paterno.
Jessica Liao (Los Angeles, CA)
Which one was a better hire, Muschamp or Golden?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Golden has a proven record. You never know how assistant coaches are going to adjust to the pressure. As Dan Rooney once said, if you knew which assistant coaches would make good head coaches, he would never have to work again.
Did West Virginia do the right thing naming a future head coach or was that the wrong thing to do to Bill Stewart?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
The way it was handled, it was done poorly in my opinion. It showed no class at all.
What do yo think of Rich Rod keeping the seat warm for Urban Meyer when he is ready to coach again in a year or two??
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
My prediction has always been that Urban Meyer will coach at Notre Dame. That said, I feel Brian Kelly will coach 10 years in South Bend. With that in mind, the next pick would be Michigan. He would possibly go back for that job when he does return.
Do you think the Sooners will be affected by Kevin Wilson's decision to go to Indiana? His mind may be away from this bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I don't think it will make any difference as Oklahoma will not have any trouble beating Connecticut.
Travis (New Mexico)
What are your thoughts on the MWC, does the addition of some schools counter the loss of Utah, TCU and BYU? If those 3 didnt leave it would have turned out to be a very good conference I think.
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
Those losses are big. They got Boise State, but I feel those were big losses.
I know you love Al Golden. How long before he turns things around at MIAMI.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
Give him some time to establish his own program. Miami did finish with a record over .500.
Beano, in 1968 did you write a fake press release stating that Sue Paterno asked ABC to move the game date for PSU - Syracuse as to not interfere with her due date? You do realize she received hate mail over this as people didn't want to sit for a game in December? Did you ever apologize?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
Number one, Penn State would not have been on national televisiont hat year if it was not moved until December. Number two, Joe Paterno and his wife Sue had no complaints. It was not a fake release, it was a release moving the game because she was expecting her baby in October. It was all in fun.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
That is not why we moved the game.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Which job has more pressure - Florida's head coach or Notre Dame's head coach?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Notre Dame for sure. The football coach in South Bend is under more pressure than any other coach or manager of any sport. It is the third toughest job in America. First is Mayor of New York, second is President of the United State, then Irish football coach.
I love the Va. Tech/Stanford matchup. No offense to the Hokies but winning the ACC is like winning the NFC West. Any early prediction on that one?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Stanford is favored and I think they are disappointed they are not playing in the Rose Bowl. It will be a semi home game for the Hokies, a team that will travel well. I think the Cardinal players will have fun in Miami. Should be a good game. I will talk more about this game in the future chat.
Is the Wisconsin-TCU game the most interesting bowl?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
It is up there, absolutely. TCU is favored, and that surprises me.
Beano, seems to me that Bobby Bowden could have went 9-4 with this years FSU team. Why did the FSU brass push out a legend like that again?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
They decided it was time. I thought it was a disgrace. Jimbo Fisher did a good job. I don't know if Bowden wuld have gone 9-4. The Seminoles beat Miami and Florida and played for the ACC title.
Can Nick Saban get the Tide back and motivated for this bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
It will be difficult, especially after the way they lost to Auburn. It is an interesting game because it is Michigan Satte, his former employer. I doubt that Saban got much sleep the last few weeks after the loss to Auburn.
Joe (Fleetwood )
Hi Beano, I love the way the Irish finished the season, Miami does posses a good secondary, but the Irish have won with power football, I see the Irish wearing down the Canes any thoughts
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
It would not surprise me if Notre Dame won. The Irish are a three-point underdog, so it would not be that big an upset if they won. Beating Utah and USC down the stretch had to give the team some added confidence.
Air Force/Georgia Tech should take about two hours to play and the Hawaii/Tulsa game could see 100 passes thrown before it is done. What do you think, Mr. Cook?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
I dont know if I will watch either game but I will consider your scouting reports. You are right, Air Force vs. Georgia Tech will be a fast game except for the commercials.
Beano I'd love to wager that the Connecticut-Oklahomo matchup will be a lot closer than you think. Randy has a way of prepping his team to play at the level of competition.
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
We will see. You may be right, but Las Vegas doesn't think so and I am sure they live a lot better than you do.
Jeff (Cedar Rapids)
What are the chances the Hawkeyes can get back on track next year. 20+ seniors leaving. With all the drug and player problems can coach Ferenz get this team back to success next season. He was a highly recruited coach the last few years do you see him staying?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
It is going to be a long season in 2011. Iowa will finally lose to Penn State. Right now Ferentz only cares about Missouri in a bowl game, not next season.
Chief Osceola (Tallahassee)
Beano, have the coaching changes at the U and UF made FSU the top program in Florida?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
Beano - you do realize that the ND program today isn't the same as it was in the 70s, right? The rest of the college FB world has passed them by, but you still think they should go 10-2 or 11-1 every year and it's the most esteemed program in the nation. It isn't.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
You may be right. They have not won a national title since 1988 and have not competed for one since 1993. There is still a mystique though. They are the only team to have the power to enjoy its own television network.
Hi Beano - BC once again gets bypassed by teams they have beat by the bowl selectors, but they seemed to have fallen into a good matchup against an explosive Nevada team. What are your thoughts on Nevada's great offense taking on BC's great defense and what are your thoughts on Luke Kuekley. Thanks.
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Interesting game. Boston College doesn't travel as many fans and state universities have an advantage over a private school like Boston College. I like the Eagles defense and Mark Herzlich deserves a Cinderella ending. By the way, Boston College made a big mistake by going into the ACC and leaving the Big East.
Do you think we will ever see Barry Alvarez coach again?
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
I don't think so.
"Notre Dame," "Notre Dame," "Notre Dame"--blah, blah, blah. Have you heard of the University of Oregon?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Yes, I will watch them in the title game.
If you were Jimbo Fisher why would you not start EJ Manuel in the bowl game? He is your future and no need to give a mnoth of reps to Ponder who is done.
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
You just can't do that to a player who has been a starter. This is his last game.
Do you think the Big XII Conference has a chance to stay together throughout the next decade? Or is it a matter of time before it dissolves?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Good question and I cannot make a prediction on that. I don't think the Big Ten or Pac-10 will expand further. The Big 12 can get by with 10 teams. In football, everyone will play each other.
I keep hearing sports writers say Arkansas should join the Big 12...what the heck for???????????????????????
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
They have a perfect set-up where they are. I agree with you.
Jeff (Ann Arbor)
Did Miami make a big mistake going into the ACC? Wouldn't have thought so but it hasn't worked out so well so far.
IKMSTU (NEW YORK)
will cam newton not playing in any senior games hurt his stock? or will he still be the number one pick?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Mel Kiper Jr. tells me he will not be the number one pick. Probably middle first round to late first. I quit making predictions on college players going to the NFL when I said Jim Brown would be an average NFL back.
What's the most exciting game you've ever been to?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Oh boy. An exciting game is one that has to mean something on a national level. The game for the national title for the 1973 season, Notre Dame 24, Alabama 23 in the 1974 Sugar Bowl.
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I will be taking next week off and will see you on the 29th...3:00 ET...Happy Holidays.
