Breakfast, Bratwurst and Bears with D'Arcy Maine
D'Arcy Maine (11:31 AM)
Greetings from snowy, windy, freezing Chicago! It's already shaping up to be an interesting day around the league thanks to the weather. So I'm putting on my meteorologist hat and am ready to talk all things Mother Nature! And by that I mean, I have weather.com open and am ready to type in city names. With that said, let's get to chatting. Send in your questions, comments, predictions, etc.
D'Arcy Maine (11:33 AM)
Full discretion: I'm not eating bratwurst. In fact, I don't even like bratwurst. But I wasn't allowed to say beer because of the whole "it's not even noon" thing...
Ryan chicago illinois [via mobile]
Hows the weather? Do you see this as a disadvantage to either team? Make sure to have a beer with your brat!
D'Arcy Maine (11:38 AM)
Would a bagel be an acceptable brat replacement, Ryan? The weather is horrible. There's really no nice way to say it. It's currently about 23 degrees but the wind chill makes it feel about 13 degrees. That of course will drop once the sun goes down, about an hour after kickoff. Winds are expected to be about 50 MPH. That said, this is not ideal weather for the passing game. Or sitting outside, but that's another story. I just saw Ditka say on 'Countdown' this type of weather really doesn't benefit anyone and I agree. It doesn't matter how used to it you are, this does not help anyone's game. That said, expect a lot of running and a very sloppy, low-scoring effort in Chicago today.

Any thoughts on this crazy Metrodome situation? When and where will it be played?
D'Arcy Maine (11:43 AM)
Not surprisingly, there are a number of questions on this fiasco. As everyone knows by know, the Metrodome will not be available tomorrow OR Tuesday. The NFL is scrambling to find another location. It seems as if Ford Field in Detroit is the frontrunner at this point due to the fact that they have a dome (Giants don't have any of their outdoor gear with them), proximity to Minnesota and that a FOX crew is already there. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. That said, my initial reaction was this was all part of some elaborate scheme to keep Favre's streak in tact. And today, based on my Twitter research, it seems like I am not alone on that. I'm kidding of course. Sort of.

why do people think new england is that good ?
D'Arcy Maine (11:47 AM)
Did you watch Monday's game? I think a 45-3 rout over the Jets warrants that kind of discussion. But, all season long, the Patriots have really looked like a return to their Championship form. Brady is playing like he did pre-knee injury and has emerged in my mind as the frontrunner for the MVP race. New England seems to be clicking on all cylinders and I think today will be a great test for them against one of the NFC's best.
Adam (Columbia, sc) [via mobile]
Do you foresee a lot of injuries as a possibility with the combination of weather and poor field conditions in soldier field?
D'Arcy Maine (11:51 AM)
Interesting question Adam. From everything I'm hearing and seeing, this field is extrememly slippery. Hard not to think there won't be any injuries with players falling all over the place. You just have to hope no one sustains anything serious. Obviously both coaches will change their game plans to adjust to the weather but I'm not sure how much they'll adjust to avoid the risk of injury.
Chris ( anywhere, usa ) [via mobile]
How dou think the bears defense will hold up against Tom Brady's hair?
D'Arcy Maine (11:54 AM)
Great question, Chris. They'll most likely be so mesmerized by the hair, they won't be able to do anything but stare.
D'Arcy Maine (11:56 AM)
This just in: The Vikings and Giants will definitely play tomorrow night at Ford Field in Detroit.
mike mass. [via mobile]
Nobody thinks new england is that good people know they're that good. Look at who we've beaten this year including your colts the defense on paper doesn't have the best numbers but they are tied for most interceptions plus they made peyton look like a fool. Bottom line the pats are winning and they're winning without playing deep ball to moss.
D'Arcy Maine (11:58 AM)
Preach it, Mike. Gary, Indiana... I'm fairly certain that was directed at you.
stevie white bear lake mn [via mobile]
I live about 45 minutes to an hour from the dome and just wondering what u would do if your the nfl. p.s. would u play it outside at tcf bank?
D'Arcy Maine (12:02 PM)
Stevie, I think the NFL made the decision because the Giants were prepared to play indoors. Also, with the wintery weather all over the Midwest lately, I can't imagine they would want to risk this game facing any more postponements. Finally, FOX is already in Detroit so it's the easiest in terms of the TV adjustments. I have no idea what kind of attendance to be expect tomorrow. Can't imagine too many people will be able to switch their plans and travel to Detroit tomorrow.
Dave (foxboro, ma) [via mobile]
How bad does Randy wish he stayed in NE?
D'Arcy Maine (12:05 PM)
I would think very, very badly, Dave. Thursday's game marked just the second time in his career that he wasn't targeted in a game. I have no idea what Fisher and the Titans are doing with him. He's still a top-notch WR but the more frustrated he becomes, the less likely it is he will ever do anything. Straight cash homie.
D'Arcy Maine (12:05 PM)
Fair warning: Every time I talk about Randy Moss, I can't fight the urge to end it with, "straight cash homie".
Alfonso Yang (Chicago, IL) [via mobile]
I believe the football gods stomp the roof in at the Minnesota Metrodome to give Brett Farve time to heal. Does this up Brett Farve's availability come kick off?
D'Arcy Maine (12:09 PM)
There still isn't a definite answer about Favre's status but an additional 30 hours certainly increases his chances to play. My gut feeling is that he will play, whether or not he's actually ready to do so. Favre is pretty stubborn and if he can walk, I'd be surprised if he didn't give it a shot.
BCC, Phoenix [via mobile]
I know you're a Fordham grad, what do you know about John Skelton and what expectations should Cardinals fans have? Please make us feel better..
D'Arcy Maine (12:14 PM)
I was hoping someone would ask me about Skelton, BCC! I've been a believer in this kid for the last few years. He's got the build (6'6, 240) and playing style of a Joe Flacco and he has a ton of potential. And lucky for him, the Cards are playing the Broncos today. Last week, in his first regular season game appearance, he completed 3-for-6 for 45 yards. The transition from FCS to the NFL isn't easy but I think he's the real deal.
D'Arcy Maine (12:16 PM)
Fun fact about Skelton: He's not even the first John Skelton listed on google. That would be an English poet.
Chris: (boston, MA) [via mobile]
Tom brady is the gresatest quarterback to play the game of football. Yet there are still those who don't give him the respect he is owed. Why do u think that is?
D'Arcy Maine (12:20 PM)
Great question, Chris. I'm not sure if he's the greatest ever but he certainly is right up there. I heard Troy Brown make an interesting point a few weeks ago that I think deserves to be repeated. Brown said that because Brady was drafted in the 6th round of the Draft, he will always be thought of as a 6th rounder. I think his exact words were a "6th rounder who outplayed expectations". As a fan, I never think of where a player was drafted but Brown seemed to deeply believe that within the league, where you're drafted dictates how you're viewed the rest of your career. I'm not sure if I agree with this completely but it's a fascinating thought. Not sure what this says about Ryan Leaf however.
Slaughter South Carolina [via mobile]
What time are we playing and what channel?
D'Arcy Maine (12:23 PM)
Rules to live by: Anytime someone with the name 'Slaughter' asks you a question, you have to answer it. The game starts at 4:15 and is on FOX.
Michael San Francisco CA [via mobile]
The Patriots' pass defense has been their weakness all year, but they've been bailing themselves out with timely interceptions and a great offense. I was expecting Chicago to have a good day through the air, but the weather looks to make that untenable. Do you think the Pats or Bears benefit most from the weather?
D'Arcy Maine (12:33 PM)
Just knowing that you're in SF makes me jealous, Michael. I don't know what the weather is there but please enjoy it for the rest of us. I don't think this weather really benefits either team neccesarily. However, the guys over at ESPN Boston put together an-depth look at the Pats stats in cold weather games. According to their research, Brady is actually better in on passes of 10 yards or fewer in games played with the temperature under 30 degrees. This of course doens't factor in the type of wind he will be facing today but all of the numbers seem to show that Brady doesn't let weather take him out of his game.
D'Arcy Maine (12:34 PM)
Sorry for the delay, I'm having some internet issues. I'm going to blame the weather. Seems to be the theme of the day.
kris san diego [via mobile]
Do u think the rest of the country is jealous of san diego? Sunny and 80 degrees at kick off!
D'Arcy Maine (12:35 PM)
Yup. Thanks for rubbing it in, Kris.
johal 320 [via mobile]
Has brady surpassed manning as the best qb in the league.
D'Arcy Maine (12:40 PM)
I'm honestly surprised to see this question this week, Johal. If we're talking about currently, there is no question Brady is better than Manning. Manning is having a rough season, not helped by the injuries the Colts offense has faced. And, to be fair, at this moment, I think Rivers and Vick are also better than Manning. We might ultimately write this season off as a fluke but as of right now, Manning doesn't deserve to be considered in the best QB in the league debate.
Aaron (Chicago, IL) [via mobile]
D'Arcy- Fellow part-time gangsta here in Chicago. It's so cold I'm not sure I can make it to my local watering hole. Any shot they can postpone the whole week of games?
D'Arcy Maine (12:43 PM)
If I see any NFL officials today, I'll pass that along. This is what I like to call sweatpants and couch weather. I wish the NFL would use that wording in their official weather reports. Stay warm, Aaron!
Paul (chicago) [via mobile]
Do you think the bears will eventually do something about the embarrassing condition of the grass field year after year?
D'Arcy Maine (12:44 PM)
You would think so, Paul. However the grass condition is nothing new. There have been so many complaints though, can't imagine they won't at least attempt to do something in the off season. On the plus side, there is so much snow on the field today, I don't think the grass will even be seen this afternoon...
Poplar Bluff, MO [via mobile]
How does Devin Hester fare returning in weather like this?
D'Arcy Maine (12:47 PM)
Great question. Devin Hester is so dangerous on the return but I can't imagine he'll be able to gain too many yards in this weather. Unless every defensive players slips while trying to get him. Could be good comedy. I've said this before but this will be a very low scoring game. Emphasis on the 'very'. Can't even imagine either coach will attempt a FG with the (now-upped to) 55 MPH winds.
Ryan (Chicago!) [via mobile]
D'Arcy, where will you be during the game? I MUST find you!
D'Arcy Maine (12:50 PM)
I'm almost ashamed to say that I am sitting inside in the press box. However, there is no way I could type outside. I am beyond impressed for those coming to the game today. You're far braver than I. Send me your pictures from your seat, Ryan (on Twitter, @darcymaine_espn) and I'll post them during my live blog later! Hope you own some gloves. And a hat. And a scarf. And 15 layers of shirts.
John (Chandler,AZ) [via mobile]
Huge Bears fan and my wife decided today would be a good day for her water to break. So I ask you, this has to be a positive omen, right?
D'Arcy Maine (12:54 PM)
First... Congrats, John! If the Bears win, can we count on you to name your child after a Bear? Ditka has a really nice ring to it. Male or female. Has the makings of a positive omen but what if, um, they lose? You might be better off not to use this game as any type of foreshadowing or omen.

Brady has the best short games skills ever. Cold weather is all 10 yd throws. NE could suprise all with how well offense moves the b all. Stand. By!

do you have any idea about ticket prices for the vikings giants game on monday night
D'Arcy Maine (1:00 PM)
Sure do, Brandon. Any ticket holders from the game scheduled for today will be admitted and given preferred seating on the 50-yard line and FREE general admission wil be available starting at 8 AM (CST) tomorrow morning at the Ford Field box office. Yes, FREE. I didn't even think that word even existed in the NFL's vernacular.

Do u think brady will have the ugg boots and if so what type of an advantage does that give ne?
D'Arcy Maine (1:01 PM)
More importantly, do you think he brought an extra pair I could borrow?
D'Arcy Maine (1:03 PM)
That does it for me from Chi Town. Thanks for everyone for joining me this morning! I'll be blogging live from the game later. Hope you'll bring your questions, comments and follow along with that. Enjoy the games!
