Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
I am thrilled to be here chatting with you. Last night, while I had time off, I had a blast at the City of Palms high school basketball tournament. I took my son-in-law Thomas and my two grandsons and we saw some super basketball. For all of you anti-Duke people, get ready to watch another great player in Austin Rivers out of Winter Park HS in Florida. He is the son of Doc Rivers and a great young man. Rivers is a great talent who will fit in perfectly with the Blue Devils. I also got to see Mr. Gilchrist, who will make the fans of Big Blue in Kentucky very happy; they are the most passionate college basketball fans in America. He is going to be big-time as John Calipari has the number one recruiting class in America coming in. Wow, what a great tournament.
Texas has now beat north carolina and @Michigan state. How high do you see them moving up next week and how do you think they fair against connecticut on the 8th?
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
I think Texas has made great strides with their recent performances after being blown out by USC. Those wins you mentioned, away from Texas, should give them great confidence. That will be a great challenge for Connecticut going out to Austin.
How does it take the NCAA so long to make a decision on Kanter? They ruled on Cam Newton in a matter of days!
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
I really find mind-boggling. I couldn't agree with you more. The NCAA acts like they are finding a cure for cancer instead of just making a decision. I sometimes wonder if they realize ther are affecting so many lives, not just Kanter. I thought it would change with the new administration with Mark Emmert...we will see what happens.
Percy (San Diego)
San Diego St has been less than impressive, their only good wins are Gonzaga and Cal. Will you move them down despite the fact they are still undefeated. Not top 10
Dick Vitale (11:11 AM)
It depends on what other teams are doing. You shouldn't put such a big emphasis on this. Last night was a close call against IUPUI. San Diego State is a legit team. he one beautiful thing about college basketball is we will find out good they really are in March.
Mr. Vitale: No real question for you just a thank you for all you do. Your dedication to the V Foundation is inspiring. You've also picked up a new generation of fans in my house. My two girls, who honestly didn't follow sports much until watching 'Mike and Mike' and hearing your segments on the show, find you very entertaining. All the best to you and yours this Christmas season and please continue your work with cancer research.
Dick Vitale (11:13 AM)
Thank you so much vfor your kindness. Happy holidays and if you want to help, or your friends want to help us raise a million dollars for cancer research you can go to dickvitaleonline.com for more information on how to help. Thanks again.
Hi Dickie V, in your opinion which conference is the toughest?
Dick Vitale (11:15 AM)
I thought the Big Ten was going into the season. Michigan State has been a disappointment and Robbie Hummel being out leaves Purdue not as strong. In re-evaluating it I would now the Big East. Teams like Connecticut, Louisville, West Virginia and Cincinnati are better than advertised. Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Villanova and Georgetown are the creme de la creme. I have to say Big East right now.
Kevin Shaw (New York)
HOw do you rank Kemba Walker Josh Selby Kyrie Irving Jimmer Fredette as in terms to there ability to dominate a college game?
Dick Vitale (11:17 AM)
Obviously Walker has been the best guard in America thus far, though number two in Storrs behid Maya Moore...just kidding. All of them are vital in their success of their teams. Irving would have been number two until he got hurt. That makes it a little tougher for Duke with him out; they certainly still have a chance to win the national championship. Selby has only played a few games so we will see. Fredette is a PTPer.
Syracuse have been improving more and more each game and our looking like a top team. Do you think once they are fully developed they will have a shot to go all the way this year?
Dick Vitale (11:17 AM)
Absolutely. The 2-3 zone is a nightmare for people. They have the athleticism and experience to win it all.
Jake Pullen to act like a leader by committing infractions that were allegedly $100+ worth of merchandise. He should definitely be suspended for some games. Josh Shelby has to pay back over $5700 worth of "impermissible benefits" and is suspended for nine games. This is like John Higgins officiating....very inconsistent baby! Does the punishment fit each crime equally?
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
The bottom line is Pullen knows right from wrong. He knows better and he hurt himself but also his teammates because without him, UNLV beat Kansas State. Hopefully he will learn from this.
Robert (Kansas City)
Can Mizzou win big time playing their style of basketball?
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
I think ultimately they will win their share of games but when they meet the upper elite come tournament time, you have to defend, you have to execute in the halfcourt game and I wonder how effective they will be in that scenario.
Chip (Ann Arbor)
Have you had a chance to watch my Wolverines play yet this season? Obviously we are better than preseason expectations, but how good can we be? Darius Morris is a Super Soph that nobody is talking about! Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Dick Vitale (11:20 AM)
Have not seen them extensively but I do know the real challenge will come when they play Big Ten talent. They played Syracuse tough, I will say that.
Ray Stinger Jr (Pittsburgh)
Merry Christmas,Dickie V! Is this the year that Pitt makes it to the Final Four?
Dick Vitale (11:21 AM)
Great chance with their defense and guard play, they have a super chance in front of them. Monday night vs. Connecticut should be fun to watch.
Now that we both know the Big 12 runs through Lawrence, do you think the National Championship does too? Seems to me like those kids are nowhere close to their ceilings yet and thats scary...
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
Why can't they. They are in the mix with a bunch of other clubs. Especially with Selby in there.
At this point in time is Jared Sullinger the National Player of year? The only competition I see is Kemba Walker.
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
Sullinger has played sensationally. He is the diaper dandy of the year and he is in the mix for national player of the year.
Hi Dick! Can the Illini break through this slump and be successful in the Big Ten?
Dick Vitale (11:25 AM)
I will tell you, the loss to Illinois-Chicago was disappointing. Then last night was a tough one against Missouri. They are too tslented not to compete in the Big Ten and the Illini will be tough at Champaign. Demetri McCamey and company will be up there.
Do you think MSU can make a run at the national championship even with all these current losses?
Dick Vitale (11:26 AM)
They will have to get better chemistry. They have been inconsistent, and some of the other things like Lucious off court, Nix situation, Lucas injury, Summers not playing well on a consistent basis, they affect consistency. The body language is just not right.
With Trey Thompkins back, can you see UGA making some moves in the SEC? He and Travis Leslie are solid.
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
He is as good as there is in the SEC, but the East is tough with Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee. Each has had a dilemma as Kentucky is young and the other two have been up and down. Georgia can make some noise and Mark Fox does a good job.
will north carolina make the NCAA tournament?
Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
The Tar Heels will make it, absolutely. We have not seen the real Harrison Barnes yet. The ACC seems like it is a bit down with Wake losing to Presbyterian, Virginia to Seattle, Georgia Tech to Kennesaw State and Siena...this doesn't seem to be a vintage ACC.
Matt (Toronto, ON)
What do you think of the "new" and improved Rick Jackson this year?
Dick Vitale (11:30 AM)
He has trimmed down and become one of the premier big men inside in the Big East. I am sure Jim Boeheim is very happy with him.
jason (las vegas)
What do you think the selection commity will do when they look at UNLVs resume in March?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
UNLV will be aided by the strength of the Mountain West. They beat Wisconsin, Kansas State, Virginia Tech non-league and those are impressive.
whats up Dickie V, what rank do you think the irish finish at this year.
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
I think they are way better than I thought. They are an experienced team that can make plays. Abromaitis and Hansborough can shoot it. They are one of those teams that you have to keep an eye on. They can be right up there in the Big East.
What do you think of the progress of Jordan Williams out of Maryland? How do you think they will fair in ACC play?
Dick Vitale (11:34 AM)
He is a big physical force, one of the premier sophs in America. The way he goes will help determine how far Maryland will go in the ACC. As I said earlier, this is not vintage ACC, and the Terps can finish in the upper echelon.
Gerald(Mizz) (St Louis, Mo)
Hey Dick, who do you think will give Kansas a run for their money in the Big Twelve?
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
I think with Selby there, Kansas is the favorite, but certainly Texas, Baylor and Kansas State when at full strength can be competitive in the conference.
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
Thanks for all of your questions. I look forward to doing this again in the near future. Happy holidays to all of the fans out there.
