AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
What's that? Snow??? In January???? Imagine that! Anyways, we have ye olde second cup of coffee in hand and are all set for an hour of "le chattage fantastique" which I believe is French for either "fantasy chat" or "wonderful housecat" -- I'll go with the former. Who is up first?
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think will win this weekend Wild Card Playoffs?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Call me crazy, but I think Chiefs are only home team to win.
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)
AJ, love your fantasy baseball insight. When might we expect the 2011 ESPN Fantasy Baseball Draft Kit to be available? And, I am I crazy for wanting to draft Ryan Braun in the top half of the first round of a draft in a league with 5 OF's? He's about as consistent as they come as a five-tool contributor.
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
We'll be doing our annual pow-wow in two weeks time, so the Draft Kit certainly won't be out before then. I have Braun ranked #6 overall right now, so hard to call you crazy for that.
Morning AJ. Does Joique Bell have any value in playoff fantasy leagues? I dont see Jones or Bush doing much, so he may get a decent amount of carries, and hell probably have at least 3 games worth of statistics.
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Maybe he vultures a score, but he's not going to see a decent amount of touches IMO, since he's hardly familiar with the playbook.
Jeff K (Albany, NY)
AJ, when you are drafting in the first round of a 14 team 5 X 5 Roto baseball league, are you picking based on position scarcity or for overall numbers? (a la Votto vs. Tulo/Cano at #5)
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I don't believe in "position scarcity" at the top of the draft. Tiering makes more sense to me, but I'm not drafting Joe Mauer too early just because there aren't a lot of catchers I like.
Does Jimmy Graham play this weekend?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Doubt it. As of know, he's not practicing, but expected to travel... still with Shockey and Thomas both looking to be available, it's not essential to have Graham suit up at less-than-100 percent.
Who is more likely to make an impact next year: Montario Hardesty or Ben Tate?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Tate. We'll never know for sure, of course, but he *could* have been Arian Foster if he hadn't gotten hurt. I don't feel the same for Montario *being* Hillis.
Should Wells, Greene and Mathews all be dead to me, or which one most likely becomes an undervalued commodity next year?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Only Beanie should be fitted for a casket.
Jordan (Casper, Wy)
What concerns do you have with Youkilus coming off the injury?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
I'm not as concerned with the thumb given he'll be moving to 3B as well, so not as much impact on it fielding his position. Right now, I'm looking tenth round.
What do you think of Kendry Morales this year? I drafted him late last year and was very much enjoying the season he was having until that celebration snafu. Any concerns?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Kendry I need to see in action. The injury he suffered is not an easy one to come back from at the same level as before...
Johnny (Billerica, MA)
Where do you rank these pitchers? Verlander, Lee, Lester? Do you see AGON putting up MVP caliber numbers this season?
Heyward had a couple months that made me wonder if he was going to be the next best thing...then a couple months where he dissapointed. What do you expect from him next year and where are you looking at drafting him?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Previous answer didn't send... All three pitchers are all top 15 - I'm highest on Cliff right now. I see a decline from A-Gon, but still top 25.
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Re: Heyward. Right now I have him as an 11th Round value. Don't see the power numbers.
Greg (Westchester, NY)
Can you see a Packers, Steelers super Bowl?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I have Pack v Pats, but your scenario would not surprise me either.
What do you expect out of G.Sizemore this season?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
He was declining before the microfracture... not touching him until late without seeing some Spring success.
Greg (Westchester, NY)
Is A.J. Burnett a fantasy sleeper in 2011 considering his awful 2010, or will he be as bad or worse as last year.
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
Better than last season, but he's still outside my top-50 starters.
What's with the love for the #6 NFC seed? You did see GB put up 10 points on Chicago at home right? And if you think the Bears were running their normal offense, you haven't watched them all year.
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
What's with the hate for the #6 seed, Jay? If the Bears had scored 40 without running their normal offense, I'd be worried... the D was solid. And as for the number of points they scored, do you like Seattle better because they scored 16 points at home?
Hey AJ, thanks for your time. Coffee in hand here and ready to read. I am in a Fantasy Playoff pool. In your opinion, which side would you choose McCoy/Maclin/Garcon OR Bush/Jennings/Bowe. I get 8 replacements..so I am looking for weekly bang and am wondering if Bush will be comparable to McCoy enough that I can use the bigger WR. Thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I like the Bush trio because I think all three win.
Greg (Ellicott City)
Why so low on Youk? When healthy he is a top 30 bat. Are his injury concerns that serious still?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Assuming he's healthy, batting average is certainly not a concern... but power numbers are for me, and you know you're not getting much SB help.
You like KC to win vs. BALT. Is the BALT D too tough to start Charles? Or, do you see Charles breaking a few big ones?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Sometimes 2+2=4. If Chiefs are to win, Charles needs to have a solid day and Cassel gets the ball to Bowe without turnovers.
Drew (Beverly, MA)
How are you a fantasy expert is what I want to know? You are just giving your opinion, which are usually never right. Anyone can give an opinion, what a damn shame you get paid for it. AGON a decline? He goes from the biggest park to the smallest, your a clown
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Well, the first step in becoming a fantasy sports writer is understanding concepts of grammar. It's "you're a clown" and "My opinion IS never right."
Thoughts on Drew Stubbs becoming a top 25 OF this year?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
The power and batting average cancel each other out. Definitely worth owning, but there's a ceiling.
Matt Garza to the Cubs. Does this change his projections much (for the better)?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
I have Garza in the mid-30's SP, but I'm not quite sure he changes too much as a result, save for the typical no-DH bump.
90 years of NFL history AJ...that is why I hate the #6 NFC seed.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Yes, we all remember those awful NFC #6 seeds from the 1940's, don't we? (Rolls eyes)
So no difference between AL East and NL Central? Since when?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Of course there's a difference, but Garza's FB rate and Wrigley probably negates any plus factor in not facing Boston and NYY regularly -- and it's not like Pujols and friends won't rake him.
Your not on the ball today...I hate this specific #6 seed. From Chicago, 90 years of Green Bay hatred in this town. Get a cup of coffee.
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Oh, my apologies Jay -- didn't realize you were a centenarian without any ability to form own's own views of the world. In that case... Bears will win it all.
Like Jhoulys Chacin as a sleeper? CarGo as a top 7 OF?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Chacin not in my early mix of options... but CarGo is my No. 3 hitter.
Mike (San Diego)
YOUR = BELONGS TO SOMEONE; YOU'RE = YOU ARE!!!! WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT?!?!?!
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Mike, relax. Back in the aughts, people didn't use contractions. It's not Jay's fault.
Any projections on Jose Bautista following his 50 homer season?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I'm thinking he dips by about 15 homers, but even that's pretty impressive. Borderline first rounder.
Hey AJ, can I have your job? I love fantasy sports
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Well, you didn't write "Can I have you're job" so your halfway there.
Greg (Ellicott City)
What are your projections for Mark Reynolds and Derrek Lee?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Better average for Mark but a drop in HR again. Lee around the same.
Leo Lyons (Rochester Jeffersons)
AJ, tell Jay that me and the rest of the upstart Rochester Jeffersons took it to them no good Columbus Panhandles in the 6-3 matchup in nineteen digigity three, so he can take his 90 years and smoke it out of a corn cob pipe.
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I don't know, Leo. I've been heartbroken ever since the Tonowanda Kardex broke up.
Roy Oswalt is your ___ ranked pitcher.
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
17th -- to put it in perspective, the Phillies aren't going to go 162-0 so some Phour starters will get some losses along the way. I have Doc/Cliff 1-2 right now.
Mike (San Diego)
35 HR makes you a borderline 1st rounder? Do you really see that big of a drop in power across the league?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I do believe 54 minus about 15 puts him at 40, no?
Joe (Salem, MA)
Yovani Gallardo has the strikeout potential, will be have a better 2011 with Grienke in the picture?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Don't think it really matters. The K's will be there or won't be there because of his own arm. Both will be top 25.
who is your top fantasy QB heading into next season?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Given the history, it's always Peyton.
You could claim that you said "your halfway there" on purpose but it doesn't seem that way to a casual observer.
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Eric, you know that thing where someone explains a joke and thereby renders it no longer funny... you're that guy.
Reid (The Couch)
Do you see Ryan Braun as the # 1 rated OF going into the season? What kind of numbers do you see him putting up?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
I have him third behind Carl and CarGo. Maybe if he changed his name to Caryan?
Fantasy Baseball question. Rather keep Prince Fielder or Justin Upton?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
It's Prince Spaghetti Night!
Bergin (Tent in Cambridge)
Do you see Little Dusty Pedroia putting up similar numbers to the year he won MVP?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
I can see 20-20.
Jim Bob (Appalachia)
Your, you're...it's 'yer,' ya'll.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
And on that note, we'll call it a chat. Have a great weekend y'all and enjoy the games. If you'd like to continue the debate further, farther or even father, then follow on the Twitter. Until the next time...
