Dick Vitale (11:03 AM)
Good morning. Glad to be back from the Final Four. Congratulations to Jim Calhoun and Gary Blair as they stahd tall as national champs. The Aggies beat a good Notre Dame team to win the women's title. UConn won a game that was not pretty, but to Jim Calhoun, it looks like a combination of Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel ans Scarlett Johansson. Just saw Michigan State AD Mark Hollis and is happy to have Michigan State-UNC on a carrier on 11-11-11...wow. Most of the fans will be from the military.
Why are the Huskies not in your top five for next year?
Dick Vitale (11:04 AM)
You lose Kemba Walker, but they should be a top 10 teams. It uis subject to change so don't get carried away. They should be top 10. It inly matters at the end of the season.
Were you surprised Mark Gottfried ended up with the Wolfpack job? How will he do?
Dick Vitale (11:06 AM)
Gottfrie4d is one of those guys who has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove the Alabama guys wrong. He took them to five straight NCAA trips including an Elite 8. He is dealing with Carolina and Duke now and he has been in battles with Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee plus Bama is football crazy.
Matthew (Los Angeles,CA)
Now that the tournament is over. Do you feel that your job is over for the year?
Dick Vitale (11:07 AM)
Absolutely not. There is long term and short term preparation. It is a year-round job, my friends.
Jason James (Pittsburgh,PA)
Dick do you like the Pittsburgh Panthers chances of winning it all next year even though they have 3 crucial seniors that have left?
Dick Vitale (11:08 AM)
Pittsburgh will reload and Jamie Dixon will have his team back in the hunt. Other kids are coming back and they have good players coming in. While they will lose Wanamaker and Gibbs has declared for the draft, the Panthers will still be good.
Michael (Washington, DC)
If Jordan Williams comes back to MD for his junior year are the Terps able to be a Top 25 team again? Also, any comments on the Gary Williams/Debbie Yow situation?
Dick Vitale (11:09 AM)
Ludicrous as Williams would not sway a coach looking for a job. A coach is not going to be affected by what Gary said. We know they did not have a good relatiobnship. Jordan Williams has already declared for the draft.
Johnny (Windy Hollow)
Who's the starting point guard for UK next year, Brandon Knight or Marquis Teague?
Dick Vitale (11:10 AM)
Knight if he is there...both are combination guards and they could play together. They would be dynamite together. All depends on if Knight stays or goes.
Mr Vitale, I was just curious if you had any insight into the rumors coming from the final four that Steve Alford and Mizzou were courting one another. It either happened or it didn't, but as a Lobo fan I'm happy he stayed and think the Mountain West is theirs to lose next season. thanks
Dick Vitale (11:12 AM)
Missouri went with Frank Haith. I don't understand why people are against him. He knows the league, was at Texas before Miami and he is going to a place where they love basketball. There was little interest at Miami. I believe Haith will turn that into a positive,
Matthew Byrd (Indianapolis)
Brad Stevens should leave, with Mack and Howard gone and all the recruits going to IU, Purdue, theres no reason to stay. I mean, we all want the best for him here in Indy.
Dick Vitale (11:14 AM)
Brad Stevens loves Butler and they will be a giant in the mid-majors and they will not go away. As long as he is there, and he turned down lots of George Washingtons from Oregon last year, they will be very good. They are like Gonzaga in the mid-majors. I am not sure about another Final Four but they will be good.
KEvin SHaw (NYC CT)
In hindsgight who is the PO YEAR not season including postseason! I have Kemba Walker handsdown started the best and finished the best!
Dick Vitale (11:15 AM)
Probably. If you talk postseason he would be right there. Jimmer Fredette had a great season and POY was based on the regular season. I understabd the point.
How about Bob Knight for UNLV?
Dick Vitale (11:16 AM)
I do not see that happening. I know a lot of people want former Rebel Reggie Theus, who does have coaching experience.
Chris (Wallingford, CT)
I enjoyed your emotional segment when comparing your career to Jim Calhoun's. In your opinion, does JC coach the Huskies in November?
Dick Vitale (11:18 AM)
I think Calhoun is a gym rat. If he gets a good report from the doctors and is capable of being on the sidelines, I believe he will be back. I don't think Kemba will return but he should have Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb plus Alex Oriakhi. Connecticut will be up there in the Big East.
Jeremy (Chicago, IL)
Who is a mid-major team that you think can make a "Butler or VCU run" next year?
Dick Vitale (11:19 AM)
A little early for that but I am sure there will be a mid-major or two doing some damage. Leagues like the MVC, Colonial and Horizon always produce good teams.
Steve Gates (Richmond, Va.)
I know you don't like the BCS with no playoff system and I love March Madness; but what kind of system gives a team that finished 9th in their own league a chance to be National Champions ? If you aren't the best in your league how can you be the best in the country ? You should have to be a conference champion to have a chance to be National Champions IMOP.
Dick Vitale (11:22 AM)
Do you think the way TCU was treated was fair? Going undefeated and doing everything possible and you have no shot at the championship? Are you serious? At least every team gets a chance to play for the national championship. I think that is a lot more fair. Yes, a team can get hot and win it all like Connecticut did. I would prefer to sing their praises.
With Zeller and Henson already deciding to come back, do you think Barnes will follow suit?
Dick Vitale (11:23 AM)
It would make sense and I have Carolina as my preseason number one as of now. Add in Kendall Marshall and the Tar Heels were a different team with him running the point.
John (Fairfax VA)
Any chance of ESPN College Gameday coming to George Mason for GMU vs VCU next year? It'll be AWESOME BABY!
Dick Vitale (11:24 AM)
I have not heard anything about the schedule yet for next season. That would be interesting to go down there. I have a lot of respect for both Shaka Smart and Jim Larranaga. I do not know if they even play on a weekend.
How do you think Billy Donovan will adjust his playing style from this past season's Gators that had experience, talent, depth, and length in the frontcourt to next year's team which figures to be the exact opposite...a guard-heavy, perimeter-oriented team?
Dick Vitale (11:27 AM)
Florida will be loaded in the backcourt with Brad Beal coming in, plus transer Mike Rosario from Rutgers is eligible, to join Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton. I will tell you to look out for Patric Young to have a big-time impact up front. This should be an exciting team to watch down in Gainesville. The Rowdy Reptiles should be happy at the O-Dome, baby!
Chris (Wallingford, CT)
Is UConn the biggest surprise National Champion since Nova in 85?
Dick Vitale (11:28 AM)
Let's remember the Huskies were a number three seed and very hot entering the tournament. I would say Danny Manning and the Miracles in 1988 were a bigger surprise the Connecticut, for example. It was a terrific run for Calhoun and company.
Corey (Atlanta, GA)
Be looking out for UGA next year. Top recruits are coming to make a statement
Dick Vitale (11:29 AM)
The loss of Thompkins, who has already announced his decision to go to the NBA, is a blow to Mark Fox. He has done a good job and will probably get Georgia back into the big dance.
Mark (Cincinnati, OH)
Do you think Xavier has final four potential next year since they are returning their top scorers plus their long range shooter Brad Redford is back, along with 3 heralded recruits, Monmouth transfer Travis Taylor, and their top recruit last year who couldn't play due to eligibility issues in Justin Martin?
Dick Vitale (11:31 AM)
Xavier will be a team to keep an eye on. Chris Mack does a terrific job and it will be a matter of chemistry. Will this team jell and make a long run into the tourney? There is a lot of talent.
Dicky V, How good do you think Memphis will be next year? We have another Mcdonalds All-American coming to Memphis so is this year we finally become a national powerhouse again?
Dick Vitale (11:32 AM)
Memphis should be a ranked team for sure. A lot will depend on whether any of those guys like Barton or Jackson go pro. There is a lot of potential and Josh Pastner should be very happy. They should be the favorite in C-USA.
Gerald (St Louis)
Hey Dickie V, Missouri just hired what I think is a great coach. My issues is that everyone is slamming Missouri for this hire. He graduates his player and is a pretty good recruiter. Why such a negative attitude when other so called coaching canidates turn down the job?
Dick Vitale (11:33 AM)
As I said about Haith before, I think he will do a good job at Missouri, where fans are passionate. I think he will do a good job there.
Mark (Madison, WI)
When do you think the Hoosiers get back to the tournament? Is it too optimistic to think they can make it next year?
Dick Vitale (11:35 AM)
Within the next few years. I like Tom Crean and he is working hard to improve the fortunes of this former power. Things were a mess when he inherited it. He will add Cory Zeller and that will help a lot. He needs his team to stay healthy. That would help a lot too. The Big Ten was very competitive this season, with seven teams making the field of 68. It is not easy to make it.
will you choose KU to go all the way to the final four again since they are loosing their starting 5
Dick Vitale (11:37 AM)
Kansas will have Taylor and Robinson back. Losing the likes of three NBA players last year in Aldrich, Collins and Henry is why I put them a little lower. Teams like Baylor and Missouri were not the teams I expected in the Big 12.
I was very dissappointed when Brian Gregory left UD. However, it looks like we may have found another up and coming coach with Archie Miller. What are your thoughts. You know we love our college basketball in Dayton
Dick Vitale (11:38 AM)
I think Archie Miller just needed an opportunity and now that he has it, he should take advantage of it. If he can do half as well as Sean, watch out.
So now that Kyrie Irving is officially leaving for the NBA, how far will the diaper dandies carry the Dukies next year?
Dick Vitale (11:40 AM)
Duke, even losing Singler, Nolan Smith and Irving, will compete in the ACC. Coach K has Seth Curry, the Plumlees and diaper dandy Austin Rivers, plus other key newcomers coming in. Duke should be a solid team to watch.
Alan (San Francisco)
Does Louisville have a shot next year to win it all?
Dick Vitale (11:41 AM)
Rick Pitino is happy with the talent he has coming in, led by Blackshear in the backcourt. The Cardinals will be an elite team ranked highly next season.
Dickie V!!!So how long you gonna do this for? You got any idea?
Dick Vitale (11:42 AM)
I will keep going as long as I am healthy and content that I am doing a good job. I hope to be doing this til I am in my 90s.
Where's Syracuse rank on your look ahead? Katz has them 7 and a lot have them in the top 5.
Dick Vitale (11:43 AM)
Syracuse will be a very good team and probably tiop 10 as well. It depends on who returns and is subject to change.
Dick Vitale (11:45 AM)
