AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning gang! We've got an hour to empty our satchels of gold of all the fantasy goodness, so let's get cracking. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?
Jason Bay? You a believer?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
One game, Henry. One game. He'll be a middle-of-the-pack OF for the season.
Aj, in shallow formats would you rather own Contreras or Storen here on out?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Storen. Even when the Phillies win close, the starters often go the distance.
Tim (ABQ, NM)
With KC's apparent wealth of options in the pen now...is it more likely Soria gets traded at the deadline...and who do you see taking his place if so?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I think Soria's stay in KC is directly related to their place in the standings and little else. If they're within striking distance of a playoff spot, he stays. If not... say hello to Crow.
stephen (los angeles)
which dinged-up, day-to-day 3B will be available first: youkilis or panda? or do i need to grab a warm body for the next couple of days?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
I'd grab the warm body, though I think Panda has a shot to be back on the field this weekend.
What are your thoughts on Kyle Lohse? For real or still a borderline streamer?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Completely for real. Healthy and has the master in Duncan.
AJ, what's the update with Delmon Young? Still worth holding onto him despite his horrendous start?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
He's had the same flu that has sidelined Morneau - plus he's begging for an MRI to check on his own bruises. When a player wants more tests, it's never a good sign.
Crow? Not Jeffress or Collins?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Could be any of them come late July... and whole point could be moot. I'm only guessing here based on who I think has been best so far.
Big T (Chicago)
Is a 20 win season possible for Jered Weaver or is he the 2011 version of Ubaldo Jimenez last year?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Far better than Ubaldo. Right now I'd say the odds of not winning 20 are FAR less than getting to 20.
Maybin or Venable...which SD Padre will be more worth it in the end?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Cameron for me... too much in one basket for Will.
Drop one; Garza or D Hudson
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Hudson. He's got potential, and really only had the one bad inning yesterday, but when he's bad...
Joe (St. Louis)
Is Sergio Santos worth holding onto or is that bullpen gonna be a mess for at least the near future?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Thornton will likely get the job back and Sale will be there to pick up the pieces when/if he falters again. Santos may get a save or two, but I don't expect more than that.
Cole Hamels (San Diego)
Ranking me 11th on Daily Notes??!! That's just crazy AJ...
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
You hurt my computer's feelings, Cole. Crashed the whole thing... either that or Skynet just became aware. Anyway, I stand by the ranking.
AJ, don't know if you saw it but Lowrie's last AB and resulting sac fly against the Angels last night sealed the deal for me, and I suspect, Francona. He deserves to play every day...are you a believer too?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
I think it was headed down that road anyway, and with Youk probably MIA for a few, there's really no decision need be made yet.
How is the "magic date" set for prospects to be called up so that they delay the arbitration clock for a season? Do you think this will be when we see Mike Moustakas?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
I get asked this frequently... it's not a magic date... there is a certain number of call-ups after which time all that follow don't have the clock started. So it all depends on how many players get called to the bigs for the first time as to when the line in the sand is drawn.
What about Billingsley at cubs today? What's the concern? You have him behind guys like Duensing on the daily notes...
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
First you need to take the QR into account. And that's a straight statistical formula - not opinion based. Now combine it with how each pitcher has done so far in 2011. Again straight stats. Now move up or down a few spots where it doesn't look right. End result: Duensing has better matchup, better 2011 stats, and is at home.
Tyler (Cubicle in Beantown)
Is Carlos Pena approaching droppable status?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
I'd always rather try and trade a guy before I cut him... but I certainly am not surprised at the performance here.
Tim (ABQ, NM)
Will Jeter turn it around soon?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
The best thing about Jeter is that because of who he is, we at least know he's not getting benched... so at least he'll be given more time to work it out. Fingers crossed.
AJ, but the question is about Billingsley and his start today (if it doesn't get rained out). My opinion is that you start everyone against the Cubs.
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
That's just silly. Moreso since the Cubs are second in NL in BA.
Bronx Science graduate (75 West 205 Street, Bronx NY)
High School reminiscing......also reminiscing about the last time I was happy with Angel Pagan as a late 'stud' pick...what's your most scientific analysis of his injury and predictions for the rest of the year?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Pagan hurt himself yesterday bumping into his own second baseman in the field. And it looked like one of those injuries that you know will linger... eventually he bounces back, but in the short-term I'm benching.
Cole Hamels (San Diego)
8 IP; 11K; 0ER; I'll be at your next chat with a "I told you so"...
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
Wouldn't be an "I told you so" any more than if Casey Coleman posted the same line. We all know Hamels is good. It's all about judging this particular matchup at this particular point in the season and giving an odds assessment. If I own him, I start him regardless -- I don't play that matchup game.
Mike (San Diego)
Someone should tell Cole that dominating the Padres isn't the world's toughest task...
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
LOL. Plus don't forget that getting the W is also a big part of a SP's value. In that ballpark, Phillies bats are far less threatening than at the Bank.
Name Game? (Scott Baker, Bruce Chen, Kevin Corriea, Jason Hammel) please rank
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Correia, Chen, Baker, Hammel. In that order.
David M. (L.A.)
Rank 'em, Part II: Nolasco, G. Gonzalez, Billingsley, E-Jax
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Ricky, Gio, Edwin, Buzz.
You starting Morrow in his first time out after the DL? Thoughts on him for the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
No, because I almost never do... I'd rather see a guy is healthy with my own eyes than risk it. As for part, two... pretty much same answer. Let's see what he looks like first. This isn't a talent issue - it's health.
King Felix for Prince and Loney?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Nope. Felix will be fine. Loney will not.
Tim (ABQ, NM)
Does Farnsworth hold the closing role for Tampa all year?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I think he has it until he doesn't. Maddon isn't married to him, so his trigger will be far quicker than other managers.
Gavin (Conshohocken, PA)
where does hellickson finish the year?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
On the bench, shut down early for precautionary reasons -- and well out of the top 50.
Cut bait on Austin Jackson? feels early but still being in last is not fun.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
Cut. He needs a Triple-A wake-up call in a big way.
william doyle (pho town, ny)
When is Joe Mauer coming back? Are his sickness and leg problems something to worry about? And Phil Huhges. Do you think he can bounce back from this dead arm issue?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Clearly, something is going around the Minny locker room with Mauer, Morneau and Delmon all sick. As such, I have to believe it will pass. As for Hughes, he's certainly not getting off the fantasy bench anytime soon, but I don't think I cut him.
Hey AJ, LEGIT question here. Any chance the Daily Notes could be posted by the time the first game of the day starts. For us h2h players, that would be really helpful!!!
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
LEGIT answer here -- you do realize the DN post for tomorrow's games today, right? That should give you plenty of time to make whatever moves you need to for the following day.
OF name game: Markakis, D Young, Ellsbury, Ibanez
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Despite the BA, it's Jacoby and not really that close for me.
Matt (Ann Arbor)
Why no love for Carmona today?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
The matchup is a 2, which really should have him ranked around 26 or so. I moved him to 19, because he has been pitching better lately... but that's still a big jump... considering he is on road and lifetime 4.82 ERA vs Twins.
Reasoning for having Pineda at top of DN?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Solid matchup, at home (as opposed to Lester, CC on road), performance so far this season... could you juggle the top 5 guys? Always. Am I making a statement that I think he's legit. Probably.
You get no love AJ. Everyone acts like you can predict the future with pitching. God forbid you rank a good pitcher in DN at #11! Its all about the numbers and matchups! People take it so personally!
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Hey, passion is good. If nobody cared, my job wouldn't exist. And over time, I'd say my rankings are right more than wrong. And keep in mind, in Hamels case, he can win and give up 2 runs and fan 7, and still possible be 11th overall for the day. It's a relative ranking.
Who gets called up first the-MOUK or Jennings?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
I think Jennings would have been called up when Manny left if the Rays wanted him up before the ASB.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
Gang, that's the bell. Have a great weekend, one and all. It's never possible to get to all the Q's, but I check into Twitter frequently. Try me there. Happy Earth Day... and until the next time... good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
