Stephania Bell (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon Sports Nation! Thanks to everyone who is stopping in today. Just have to share one of the best parts of my job. I get to chat with you while watching the Giants play the Rockies sitting here at my little desk...Welcome back Cody Ross! Aubrey Huff will play today b/c Big Panda has a triceps issue. Belt went back to the minors...but I have a feeling we'll see him again soon...
Hi Stephania,How concerned are you about Peavy's setback?
Stephania Bell (3:05 PM)
Welcome John: Thanks for being the first to post! I'm not really concerned. MRI was normal. He had some muscle soreness - and here's the good thing. He reported it. Peavy has a tendency to push through when he shouldn't - something he acknowledged to me during spring training. And that obviously has led to problems. We need to remember that it has been nine months since he's pitched (in a real game) and there is a build-up of endurance that has to happen. I think this is relatively minor and while it may delay his return, I don't see it as being some big threat to his ability to pitch again. Just taking a deep breath and a step back.
David (San Diego, CA)
Hey Stephania:Can I get an update on Joe Mauer? Thanks
Stephania Bell (3:07 PM)
David: Can't we all? So far, no news. He was supposed to see his "specialist" in Baltimore. I think the interesting thing is Mauer saying he does not feel the leg weakness and the virus are connected although the team indicated that they were. In other words, more questions than answers for now...
Mark (San Jose)
Steph, how long till Morrow makes his first start and how well do you think he'll do in that game? Looking forward to the strikeouts.
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Mark: Hey fellow Bay Area fan: Morrow is expected to start Friday or Saturday. Not sure what to expect. He got beat up a little bit in his first rehab outing - which is partly why they kept him out a little longer. I think healthwise he'll be fine, but performance-wise not sure what he'll deliver off the bat.
Regarding Chipper, knowing what we know about his history and what you know about the nature of that history, would you look to deal him or enjoy one of the most productive hitters in the game and hope for the best if he was on your team?
Stephania Bell (3:12 PM)
Jem: I have a little bias towards Chipper - I'd keep him. Sure, he's a guy who will get dinged up (or like last year, tear his ACL, but hopefully that lightning won't strike twice), but he plays through a lot of the small stuff and when he's on a tear, like he seems to be now, I think it's worth hanging on. And hope for the best.
Geoffrey (Chicago, IL)
Aaron Hill experienced tightness in his hamstring last night, I think. A lot of his value has been derived from SBs so far. Is this serious? Will this further sap his power? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Geoffrey: You're right - was his right hamstring. Not clear how serious yet - but you always worry at least a little about explosiveness when it's a hamstring. The hope is that keeping him quiet to let it recover - and not bring him back too soon - will be the key.
Barret (Denver, CO)
How long can I expect this level of play from Josh Johnson? When should I start shopping him? You rock!!
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Barret: Thanks - and as you probably know, I had concerns about Johnson pre-season, not for how he'd perform out of the gate, but for how he'd hold up. I don't think anyone saw quite this amazing of a start coming. My concern is if he keeps delivering these low/no-hit multiple innings that he'll accumulate a lot of innings fairly quickly. If I had him, I'd be hanging onto him until around the All-Star Break, then shopping...
Rajai Davis: What is the extent/status of his ankel injury and how long till we see him swiping + bases again?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Joel: Well, when he went out he had aggravated an injury that was already there. So now they really want to be sure it's better before putting him out there. And if it's not, it will certainly affect his stealing since there's so much lateral movement with taking a lead and getting back to tag up. The quickness, the agility, that has to come back. Sometimes takes beyond the standard DL time. So can't predict just yet - but if he gets into a rehab assignment later this week as expected, then we'll get more clues.
Hey Stephania - What is the news for Greinke - what can we expect when he gets back? Offered a trade of him for Mccann so don't want to jump in uninformed...
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
George: Had a great rehab start. Good velocity (mid-nineties) and felt fine. Next expected to pitch Triple-A. Couple more rehab starts and then they hope to have him back, prob early May. I like the way things look.
Amit (Atlanta, GA)
Can you give us an update on Kendrys Morales?
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Amit: Running in the outfield grass, but not fast (not that he's really blazing anyway). Next comes basepaths - harder surface. THen increase speed, increase turning corners. If all goes well, probably a couple more weeks.
Any concerns with Oswalt coming back tomorrow?
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Walt: So far, not really. He's experienced enough to recognize the difference between his latest mid-back spasms and the other back pain that has plagued him chronically. For now, believing that this will be a non-factor.
What do you think we can expect from Longoria upon his return? Will there be lasting/recurring effects of this injury? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Joe: The problem with these oblique injuries is they take a while to recover from. The good news is that when they fully heal there doesn't seem to be a high recurrence rate. But everyone fears the not-quite-healed return and then a major setback. So they play it cautious. He was expected to swing the bat yesterday (haven't yet seen how that went) and hopefully return end of April.
Stephania no worries w/Ubaldo, right? just needed a little live action, true?
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
Fitzy: That's the hope. Cuticle is healed - but he might be a bit rusty.
Adam (Pittsburgh, PA)
How about Andrew Bailey
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Adam: He threw a bullpen this weekend - I think the team hopes to have him back within a few weeks but they're likely to err on the side of caution given his history. I still will have concerns that this could come back to haunt him later - but that's the big unknown. Right now, it's just one day at a time.
Half a chat without a mention of Utley? Please Stephania, help a guy out, just picked him up off the waivers. Anything new? Even worth the add?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Freddy: Just waiting for you my friend. And since you already picked him up, maybe you know something I don't...While I am totally rooting for Utley, I have to say that I maintain a level of skepticism. He has amazing willpower - and he has started a light running program. Which is great. But that still needs to increase to sprints, directional/base running, playing in game situations (where you don't get to anticipate how you will have to move) and then there's the issue of playing back-to-back days. Remember, the wearing of the cartilage does not go away. SO the underlying condition remains. It's a question of how well he can play without it flaring up excessively.
Can you give a Ryan Zimmerman update please? The masses need to know how much longer he is going to be out!
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Jeremy: Yes, you are speaking for the masses. Might be the most popular guy today. It looks like it will be a couple more weeks. This is an injury that got much worse when he attempted a slide and they're not bringing him back early. So I'm guessing the original 3 week projection is going to stick.
Is J Nathan worth dropping if I have Capps, Hanrahan, Walden, Aardsma.
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Steve: Good question - but I would not drop Nathan. This is not uncommon post TJ surgery for guys to struggle a bit. It's been a year of not pitching. And I think they keep him in the mix for relief - if Capps dips or gets hurt, he's right back in. This takes the pressure off him for a bit.
Any updates on Morneau. 6 days seems like quite a few days to be out with the "flu" Any chance of a more serious problem like concussion symptoms flaring up.
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Wendy: Very observant question. Not that I think there is a big coverup. Only that I think that given his particular history, it's a legitimate question. And some of the symptoms can be very similar. So even if it is truly a flu, you can bet they want him to be 100% clear - and make very sure that there's nothing else - before returning him. And if it turns into another week or two, well then, we can really be concerned.
Hey Stephania, thanks for chatting. Logan Morrison... sprained arch? Can you tell us anything about him?
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Hi James: Thanks for coming. We know he was in a boot - and the team is calling him day-to-day, meaning it does not sound immediately severe. He tweeted (if I recall correctly) that he did not expect it to be more than a few days, but sometimes these things can take a little longer than expected. Unfortunately no way to know for sure just yet.
Dallas Braden news?
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Joe: He's seeing Dr. Yocum today. I think Braden's own response to his shoulder - saying this felt like nothing he's ever had and sounding discouraged - is the biggest clue that we should be concerned. Right now there's nothing from the team b/c he's still undergoing evaluation but those are certainly ominous signs.
Hi Stephania, Is Jon Rauch worth keeping now that Francisco is back? Francisco has a nasty habit of getting hurt, though.
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Mark: I absolutely would hang on to Rauch. Francisco is not automatically going to close right away and this injury was inflammation in his throwing shoulder, so yes, reason to have insurance.
Stephania Bell (3:49 PM)
OK - Not only did Ty Wiggington just crush a huge homer against my Giants (and very un-Matt Cain like performance) but he hit Buster Posey in the wrist with his bat. Ejection...
Any word on J. Cueto's status?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Sam: Had a rehab start last weekend and did OK. Expected to make a couple more rehab starts and then hopefully return to Reds.
Jay (At the office on my bday)
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
OK Jay - Happy Birthday!! As for your guy Aardsma, he was supposed to start a rehab assignment this week. Have not yet heard about performance. Apparently the Mariners expect he could join them before the month is out - but then they would have to actually have save opportunities for him to earn any...
Re: Kendrys Morales rehab, how rusty do you think he'll be when he does finally return?
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Mike: Rusty. He's been out since last May - and honestly I thought he'd come into spring training further along than he was. Just seems slow. And if he looks apprehensive when he comes back with the team then it's really a concern.
yikes cain is being uncainlike sofar. any word on Arod??
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Yes, concern for Cain. A-Rod is back in the lineup today so he must be feeling better.
The Masses (Somewhere over the Rainbow)
Thoughts on V-Mart?
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
V-Mart has a groin strain and apparently it was worrisome enough to warrant the DL. Even though he's not catching that often, they may want to be certain that one outing doesn't take him out for a month or more. So far there's no indication that this should exceed the two weeks, but these rehab things are always a daily assessment.
Any concerns with Chapman going forward ? He always looks like he is one pitch away from TJ surgery
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Danny: Anyone who throws that hard looks to be one pitch away from that. But the problem is we can never really know. Could go for years - or could fail anytime. I like that when his velocity was down they just rested him automatically but apparently it wasn't a huge concern since it was only a few days. Just enjoy it while it lasts - it's crazy to watch how fast that ball travels 60+ feet.
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
OK everyone - time for me to clear out of the chat room. Thanks so much for stopping by. Great questions as always. And tomorrow I'll be talking injuries on the 06010 podcast and on Fantasy Focus (video) on ESPN.com. Good luck with your teams -and stay healthy!
