AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning, gang... time for another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand... who's up first?
Rate Please: Markakis, Adam Jones, Damon, Morrison
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Johnny Caveman, LoMo, DigDug, Nick.
Which camp are you in? The veto all trades that are lopsided or only trades that smell of collusion between owners?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Let owners make trades of any kind, as long as they aren't in collusion.
Usually the advice is to give a guy coming off injury a few days to adjust, but with Longoria coming back next Tuesday, I have to start him in my weekly lineup, right? Especially since my offense is generally terrible, and the alternative is Pedro Alvarez?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
That advice only applies to pitchers. Hitters I say you put right in there. What's the worst that can happen? It's not like an 0-for-8 is going to destroy you as much as a 1 IP, 8 ER disaster.
Bobby Abreu (Angel Stadium)
Am I still a must own in a standard 10-team mixed league? I'm very old and I've been slumping BADLY.
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I don't know about must own, but certainly Abreu is still in the discussion. Everybody has one slump in them...
Shallow H2H league. Who gets the ax, Alvarez or Mark Reynolds.
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Vote Pedro to the waiver wire.
BigDog (NY, NY)
Dodgers closer situation? Padilla the best bet going forward?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
I think it's still Broxton until Kuo is back -- if he comes back. Had a rough rehab outing yesterday.
Darwin Barney; Bonafide or Bonafacio ? Drop E.Aybar for him at MI?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Hold up on Barney -- he's not in today's lineup and the cause is not yet known. If it's an injury, you don't want to be picking him up just yet.
Ben (Morristown, NJ)
At what point does where you draft someone not matter when you consider a trade. For example: Team 1 drafted Cargo in Round 1 but Team 2 drafted Nelson Cruz in Round 4. When does that not matter anymore: April 1, April 15, April 30???
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
Unless there are keeper implications, it stopped mattering as soon as the last pick of the draft was made.
Thoughts on A. Sanchez? Sell high after his near no-hitter, or do you see a solid season. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I'm not jumping through hoops for Anibal... one outing doesn't change my view on a pitcher. Sell high.
Timmy (DC )
Loaded on pitching - who is a better sell high, Britton or De La Rosa?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
De La Rosa should get you more right now.
I need help in average and speed, who do you like out of Theriot and Alcides? Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I like Theriot better, but he's nursing a sore ribcage, so he might not be helping you out for a few days at least.
Re: Earlier Response ((to Mark, TN))
You advised Pedro Alvarez to the waiver wire. Is this advice generalizable or just in the case mentioned (vs. Reynolds)?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
Good point to bring up... In most cases, I'm only answering the question in context of that question alone. Every league/case is a little different.
Why doesnt Duensing get any love? Seems to be very solid. Is it because hes not "sexy"?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
He's not a guy who seems like a lock to stay in the rotation all season... and even with his decent start to the 2011 season, he's still a spot starter kind of guy.
Time to drop swisher for frenchy or coghlan?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
I'd get Coghlan... For a full season, I'll let Cristina Aguilera deal with Frenchy.
Here is somethin you can't understand: how I can just kill a man!
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Thank you B Real and Cecil Fielder-looking guy.
Jose Bautista (Toronto)
I'm sorry, Brady who?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
Hey don't look at me... I drafted you way early in mocks. I was a believer.
AJ, how did you get your foot in the door in fantasy writing? What do I need other than a degree in journalism?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
You need to keep writing... start a blog... find a site that is looking for writers, even if it's for free... yes, a little luck helps, but in the end, I believe talent will get noticed.
On yesterday's podcast Berry/Ravitz mentioned CarGo and Wright as possible trade values for Jered Weaver. What's the biggest bat you think Weaver could reasonably fetch straight up?
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Right now, there's not a hitter out there who has been as valuable as Weaver, so I think all hands are on deck for this deal.
What SP would you target when trying to trade Hunter Pence?
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Target the moon... after all, player values are in the eye of the beholder. In terms of fantasy value thus far, Pence is No. 36 in hitters -- only nine pitchers have been as valuable (because SP can't help in as many categories).
With Contreras to miss up to a month do you think it is worth slogging up a bench spot or should we cut him and move onto the next closer opportunity?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Cut him. He was never a good candidate to last the season in the first place.
Cliff Lee for Josh Hamilton ... fair trade?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
No, because I am skeptical that Hamilton gets back as soon as the team is hinting.
Will I hit 30 with 100 RBI? NOt looking like a first rounder
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Maybe you're more of a 25-90 guy, but so what? Rounds no longer matter. Heck, if you also have a guy like Berkman on your team and you drafted him in Round 15 or later, you're ahead of the game in terms of draft value, aren't you?
Who is the better option for SB and runs? R.Davis or C.Crisp?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Rajai... Coco is hurt and likely will be in and out all season long.
Ervin Santana worth a pick up or are guys like Baker and Norris better options?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I'd rather take a flier on Bud than the other two guys.
Matt Garza or James Shields?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Shields for me... I'm not buying the "new Garza."
Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)
Why don't pick-offs count as caught stealing? I'm in a league that uses net SBs as a category instead of straight steals, so the difference can be meaningful.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
That's just the way the scoring rule is defined, Tom. If you never make a move towards second, then you're not attempting a steal.
AJ, I know it's early...but I am worried about A. McCutchen. Any opinions on his slow start?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
I think he'll be fine... there's obviously something going on in his life that is distracting him as he recently left the team for a time for undisclosed personal reasons, so hopefully once whatever is going on "isn't" then he should do better.
Better Milwaukee pitcher from here on - Narveson or Wolf?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
I'll go with Randy and his long track record of being solid, though always just outside of studly.
Fletch (The Lanai)
Masterson - bonified or bonifacio?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Bonifacio, but still worth keeping in the fantasy rotation.
So are you down on Dig Dug? Is 20-80-80-20 .275 hoping for too much?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I think he (Adam Jones) gets to 20-80-80 but fails in steals and the BA peaks at .260.
Can I drop Tex SP Harrison now? I want to make a move for a long term keeper available in my league, Jennings.
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
He's right at the edge of the top 50 right now, so if you are fine otherwise with arms, by all means let him go.
Pat (Chicago )
BEST Milwaukee pitcher from now on - Greinke, Marcum, or Gallardo?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Greinke. Let's see what he's got, right?
Jake (Raleigh, NC)
rank these struggling outfielders - Rios, Magglio Ordonez, Gardner, Travis Snider
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Snider, Rios, Gardner, Mags.
Where would you rank Utley among 2b from now to the end of the year?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Wouldn't even rank him... not close to a rehab assignment.
Hanley's peripherals are down....and have been declining the last few years.....he is very much overrated....why are peopel so in love with him and draft him so early when he isnt the player people think he is
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
People put way too much into positional scarcity on draft day. I still think he's going to mount a comeback in 2011, though not to Top 10 overall levels.
Is there anything behind Lilly's struggles that we aren't seeing?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Just all too hittable, and throwing far more fastballs than in the past.
Jed Lowrie ((Boston))
Give me a group of pitchers you would trade me away for. In other words, what's your floor?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Neighborhood of: Scherzer, Lowe, Wolf, Pineda.
Not concerned with this year, who do you want on your team for the next 3-5 years... Reyes or Castro?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Might have said Castro at beginning of year, but I've been impressed with Jose. Three years? I think he still has that much in him.
Is a lead not a move toward second?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Not for these purposes. If you dive straight back when the pitcher makes his move, it's a return to base and not a CS.
Alex Gordon (KC)
Give me a group of pitchers you trade me away for...
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Masterson, Lohse, De La Rosa is the floor.
Hot dogs or hamburgers for lunch? Decide for me
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Dan (Chi Town)
Why is a Home run not a 'Ball in play', its a hit thats not a foul ball.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Because the stat BABIP was set up to try and measure the impact of defense and therefore, there is no impact on HR or K's.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the 12 o'clock cuckoo. I'll be back on Friday for another hour, but in the meantime, there's always Twitter. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
