AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning gang! We're back for yet another exciting foray into fantasy chattage. 60 minutes on the clock and second cup of coffee in hand. Who, pray tell, is up first?
I picked up Eric Hosmer upon learning of his debut today in case he blows up and a feeding frenzy begins among fantasy owners. Should I start him to see what happens or bench him and wait to see how he does in his first couple games?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Obviously, Hosmer is going to be a hot topic today. If you grabbed him, you start him. And you should grab him. Kansas City is so budget-conscious that starting his clock early means he was not just ready - he was uber-ready. He can rake, and .300 is very very reasonable to expect.
What level of outfielder would be ok to drip to pick up Hosmer? Pierre, Abreau, Damon?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Any OF with a weak batting average is expendable. Unless you need Pierre's SB (in theory anyway) you can let him go. And yes, Hosmer may end up busting out in two weeks... many rookies do. But worth the gamble? Sure thing.
S Fuld (Tampa Bay, FL)
If I'm not getting on base I'm pretty worthless. Will I be getting back on base or should I be dropped?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
Not as good as early April, not as bad as recent history. A nice UT spot player who will help in SB and runs scored along the way.
Hi AJ. So everyone is going to go nuts and spam their FAAB on Hosmer. I think he could be more of a risk than picking up more seasoned prospects such as D Brown, Jennings, or even Belt. What do you think?!
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
They're all risky. He may well be the next Alex Gordon - all hype and a lot of disappointment. But I'll take my chances with a guy hitting .439 at Triple-A. Sky is the limit here - moreso than with some on these other guys.
How confident are you that Farnsworth keeps his job all season. Who would I want to add as insurance to lock down the TB closer?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
He's done enough to keep the job, I think. Peralta's probably next in line right now. But I don't think any one extra pickup locks it down for you.
Mike (Buffalo, NY)
Re: the Hosmer hype. I remember how Smoak fizzled last year upon being called up. Could this end up a similar situation?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Of course it could... the optimism, though, is higher here because the team didn't have to call him up yet. I say you take him if you can.
Jeff (East Bay, CA)
AJ - what is your read on the STL closer chaos? No save opportunities for Boggs in over a week...is he droppable in a 12 team mixed?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Yes he is... I think Sanchez probably has the lead right now... but one blown save and LaRussa can turn on a dime.
Who's more legit: Brennan Boesch, Michael Brantley or Mitch Moreland?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Boesch for me, though the trio is fairly even. If I knew Moreland would get more consistent playing time for the whole season, I might lean his way - but I don't.
Should I start Ubaldo today vs the giants or bench him until he has a good outing?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Ubaldo sits right now, until he shows a lot more control.
OK, so what level of PITCHER is it OK to dump for Hosmer? I have depth, but a few guys, like Colby Lewis and Ted Lilly, have struggled, while I also have less-than-reliable closers like Gregg and Padilla. Who's expendable for Hosmer?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
If we assume Hosmer gives you similar to Gaby Sanchez production so far in 2011, then you can cut any No. 4-5 SP freely.
Mitch (Harrisburg , pa)
AJ. I really find questions like Mike's from Buffalo extremely annoying. Of course it COULD be a similar situation! He could be awesome or he could suck! Why post this stuff? Now, could Hanley get hot soon ?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
I'd like to refer you to Mike from Buffalo...
Nick Markakis or Adam Lind?
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Lind for me. Not really close.
Is Jason Hammel becoming a must start in NL only leagues?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
In NL-only, I'd say he's pretty darn close, yes.
DIA DEL HOSMER (Boston)
Swisher or Hosmer? The sure 25 HR guy or take a shot on a rookie?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I'm not sure I'm locked into Swisher as a 25 HR guy anymore, but let's say he is... this goes to your personal risk/reward tolerance. All we can say is that Hosmer appears to be one of the stronger prospects, if not the strongest, right now. We're not going to hold your hand and tell you what to do.
Tom (Cleveland, OH)
Austin Jackson has been horrible? Drop him? Or be patient? I could replace him with Mclouth or Bourgeois
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
Austin Jackson is so bad right now, you may instantly gain three places in the standings just by cutting him. Need speed, you take Bourgeois.
Will Lyon retain his closer role when he returns from the DL?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Doubt it. Of course, if Melancon completely blows up and nobody else steps in... hello, Brandon.
Every time I watch Jason Heyward at bat he grounds out. Is that something that's easy to fix or will that be a season-long problem?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Clearly, Mike, you make him nervous. Stop watching... actually, though, Heyward is hitting the ball in the air more this season than last, so I'm not sure your small sample is painting an accurate picture.
Which SP do I drop?Liriano, Britton, Beachy, Volquez?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
I assume you ask because you NEED to drop someone... because right now, I don't think I'd even consider dropping three out of these four. Volquez and Liriano are the only ones I have any questions about right now -- and no way you cut Liriano after the no-no (though I would shop him and see what he's worth).
What do you think of Allen Craig if he continues to get starts?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Still not quite mixed-worthy, but on the rise. If he had a "flashier name" say like A.C. Powers, he'd probably be owned in 100 percent.
Kenny (Buffalo, NY)
Thoughts on Omar Infante? He was just dropped in my league? Does he get back to his All-Star production?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Never understood the Infante love. He's a better real-life player than a fantasy one in a big way to begin with.
AJ YOU DA MAN!!! That being said, rank these rank these OFs going forward: Beltran, Abreu, Coghlan, LoMo
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Beltran, Coghlan, Abreu, LoMo.
What kind of hitter could one reasonably expect for Shaun Marcum?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
I'd say a starting SS like Rollins or Drew is the right neighborhood.
Bob (San Jose)
How come no talk of Aviles? what can we expect from him going forward? does the hosmer callup actually raise his value?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Not much... in fact, he may get fewer RBIs if Hosmer drvies in a few more than Kila did.
John (Colorful Colorado)
Marcum for SS Rollins/Drew. Not sure if this provides much help - how about a ranking range - guy asking the Q might not need a SS!
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Of course not but whatever names I offer he might not need that position. Look at their stat-lines and anyone who matches up, that's who I'm talking about.
Is Youk going to bounce back really fearing this is going to be a year long slump and i should try and him now while he still has some value or should be patient?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
I do worry about Youk staying injury-free the rest of the way. I'd definitely entertain offers, but I'm not trading out of fear, either. You need value back.
Dan C (Cuse)
Is Jose Reyes to the yankees a possibility
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
As a free agent signing in the off-season, I'd give it a 20 percent chance. Via trade before then? Less than 5.
Ben (Bellflower, CA)
Who gets more saves this year, Rauch or Francisco?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
So long as injuries don't factor in going forward, Francisco - by at least 3-1.
Does all the turnover at the closer position make the 'safe' guys more or less valuable?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
More valuable in the sense that if you have two "safe" guys, you don't need to constantly use resources and energy to fill the closer spot. However, someone who has some of these "new guys" in the job are getting saves that count exactly the same as yours do...
Homer Bailey (Cincy)
Lets talk about me and expectations. OK, AJ?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
A .500 pitcher with a 3.80-4.20 ERA. I don't see a huge leap forward this season.
just picked up hosmer! BOO-YA!
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Take that guys in Me's league.
Cody (Davenport, IA)
Is Mike Stanton good value in return for a Matt Cain type pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
That's probably a good value for a Matt Cain-type pitcher the way Cain has pitched so far in 2011. I think he will improve some, so I'd hold out for more.
David (Los Angeles)
I was too late on Hosmer. Now I'll never win.
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Especially because Me is so brilliant.
Melacon or Broxton going forward?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Melancon... Broxton's arm might not still be attached come Septmeber.
CJ Wilson...top 25 pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
Pretty close. Certainly my fave Rangers SP.
Eric bedard...you buying?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Nope. I'll let someone else get the ulcer.
In your opinion, what is the final line for CarGo this season? I have him signed for the next 4 years. Will I be glad of this or did I just sign an average player who had one incredible year?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
CarGo didn't just have a great year -- he had a HOF year. We'll never see that again. I think he'll hit .290 and give you some good power-speed. That's it.
Will League hold the closer job when Aardsma returns? He has looked amazing. Drop Nathan for him?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
At least at first, and Aardsma still has a ways to go. League will have to lose the job.
Hiroki Kuroda.....most underrated SP in fantasy baseball? The guy has an amazing WHIP with a 3.5ish ERA every year.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
K/9 rate is a little low to be a top-10 guy, but he's definitely top-20. Don't know if that means you think I am underrating him or not...
Dropping one of these slow starters...Which do you think?Vernon Wells or Gordon Beckham?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
I know I was in the Vernon apologists club... but I think it's time to resign.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's all the time I have today, gang. To sum up: Hosmer. There's always the Twitter for those I couldn't get to. Thanks for the Q's. Good luck, and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
